Jesus described the Pharisees as having a hardness of heart. They were hard-hearted to the gospel message. Prophets, wise men and scribes were all sent to them, and instead of responding in faith, they killed, crucified, scourged and persecuted them. They were hard-hearted to their own sin. The pride of their heart had deceived them into believing they could trust in themselves for righteousness, rather than having anything to repent of. They were hard-hearted toward the lost. They were repulsed by sinners and criticized those who showed compassion to them. Is your heart receptive to the gospel? Do you show mercy to sinners with a genuine hope for their salvation?

Today's message looks at the words of John the Baptist from Matthew 11:2-3, "When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, 'Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?'" John although a deep believer came to a point where he had his doubts. Such big doubts that he had his own disciples travel 100 miles to ask Jesus that question. Matthew 11:4-5 "Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor."  These are words from the Old Testament's prophecies, Jesus quoted from Isaiah 35:5-6 "Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy."  And Isaiah 61:1 "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor." Jesus quoted these verses about the prophecies of the Messiah to show that He was the Messiah, that He and the prophecies were one. John's disciples are still listening as Jesus goes on and says in Matthew 11:11-15 "Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist...For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. Whoever has ears, let them hear." Again, these words are quotes from Old Testament Scriptures found in Malachi 3:1, Malachi 4:45-6 and Isaiah 40:3 that tell about the one who will prepare the way for the coming Messiah.  These are words about John the Baptist. The Controversy: What kind of Messiah?      ⁃    Will he be prophetic, priestly or kingly?      ⁃    Will he be a Messiah of mercy or judgment?     ⁃    Would he suffer or reign?     ⁃    Will there be 2 Messiahs who come once or 1 Messiah who comes twice? The Biblical Evidence for Messiah:     ⁃    Birthplace Micah 5:2     ⁃    Lineage Isaiah 11:1      ⁃    Miracles Deuteronomy 18:15      ⁃    Sacrifice Leviticus 17:11     ⁃    Resurrection Isaiah 53:11 We close with Pastor's heartfelt encouragement to let the word of God speak to our hearts, to search the scriptures and find what Jesus the Messiah has to say to us. No matter who you are, think about this: If Jesus really is who He claimed to be, there is nothing more important than knowing Him and being known by Him. Jesus is different than what we expected…. But He is exactly what the Bible predicted! If God loved us so much He was willing to take on human flesh and fulfill everything spoken beforehand by the prophets, lay down His life on a cross, rise from the grave and announce forgiveness to all who believe, who would reject such an offer?  It's true He was different than what was expected, but He is exactly what was predicted and He's coming back!  Therefore, we need to know Him and be known by Him.   Now What? In the letter of 1 Peter, Peter writes that the prophets announced something glorious that is for our benefit and not theirs. They were speaking, of course, of the coming of Jesus. Do we really take it seriously that something glorious that other generations longed for is here? The prophets, if they were alive today, would tell us to “wake up!” They would tell us to not take it for granted. They would tell us to live as if the world has changed forever. In this message Pastor Joel gets us to consider how we might do that, specifically by cultivating joy this Christmas season.

Free Podcast Downloads  In my last post, “190 Are Christians under the Law of Moses,” I said that the Bible teaches that Jesus fulfilled the Law. Matthew 5:17, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” This means that the Law is now outdated because Jesus completed its purpose. The Law has been replaced by grace, Hebrews 8:13, “In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.” Jesus fulfilled the Law by living in perfect obedience, demonstrating the righteousness no one else could achieve. Through His death, He became the final sacrifice for sin! 2 Corinthians 5:21,” For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Where the Law exposed guilt, Jesus brought grace and truth; John 1:17, “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” You might ask what does “Jesus fulfilled the Law” mean? Here is a practical example: suppose you borrow a sum of money and agree to pay a portion each week until it is paid in full. What happens when the debt is paid in full? Do you continue to make payments each week, or do you stop? Of course, you stop when the obligation is finished or fulfilled! In the same way, the Law of the Old Testament has been fulfilled by Jesus Christ, and there is now no obligation for Believers to keep it. The New Covenant of Grace through Jesus Christ has now replaced it.

Moses is the original Christian nationalist.   Moses was called to set up an explicitly Christian nation/state. Moses went to Egypt in order to rescue his kin — his blood relatives (BLOOD)— from domination and slavery by a pagan society.   He led them to Canaan's land (the cursed son of Ham were the “original” settlers). They invaded that land, killed the Canaanites (specific ethnos that were not the ethnos of Israel/Jacob). The Law (FAITH) of that land was the Ten Commandments. They had a contiguous geographic area. They spoke the same language and shared the same ancestors, customs, morals, and history. Let no one deceive you, all the Patriarchs and Prophets were Christians — they saw, heard and worshipped Jesus Christ. This is an episode of the Weird Stuff in the Bible podcast, which I'm also sharing here on God and His Prophets as a follow-up to Monday's episode.What I like about Matthew's Gospel is that he connects the Old Testament to the New. He'll include a verse from the Old Testament and say something like, “As the prophet Jeremiah said…” or “As the prophet Isaiah said…” I appreciate that he cites his sources. Except for that time that, well, he didn't. And yet you can scour your Old Testament and you will never find a single verse that the Christ would be called a Nazarene. This is due to the early gentile Church separating herself from Israel and her Scriptures and claiming that she has replaced her as the people of God. She then created new traditions and holy days to ensure that nobody would confuse her with being part of Israel. This resulted in Gentile Christians being deeply confused about their identity and mission in this world. Hanukkah is the pathway back to the roots of our faith and the people we are grafted into. Today we come to one of the most fascinating times in the history of the kingdom of Judah, an amazing king who does amazing things by the power of an amazing God. But first we take a look at King Ahaz who ruled from 731-715 BC. In 2 Kings 16:2-3 we read that Ahaz did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He followed the ways of other kings, even sacrificing his son in the fire. King Ahaz     ⁃    Finds himself under attack by Pekah and Rezin     ⁃    Discovers there is a price to pay when you turn your back on the Living God     ⁃    Seeks help from the Assyrians - Assyria was a massive growing super power.     ⁃    Then God brings a rebuke through the prophet Isaiah (a most effective and influential prophet) but Ahaz refuses to listen.     ⁃    Ahaz continues to turn away from God and desecrated the Temple of God as he continues to rebel against God.     ⁃    His rebellion brings sadness and tragedy and he continues to suffer military attacks. During Ahaz's reign in Judah, we read in 2 Kings 17:5-6 that Israel is defeated by the Assyrians after a 3 year siege. At the end of Ahaz's reign we see that in spite of the faithlessness of God's people, God remains faithful.  The next king of Judah is one of the best. King Hezekiah is Ahaz's son and Hezakiah rules 715-686 BC. King Hezekiah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. 2 Kings 18:3.   King Hezekiah     ⁃    In the first month of the first year of his reign he had the Temple cleansed. 2 Chronicles 29:3-5     ⁃    Then Hezekiah holds a national Passover celebration inviting all of Israel and Judah. They had a 2 week Passover celebration. 2 Chronicles 30:1.     ⁃    Hezekiah destroys the sacred stones, high places and Asherah poles and also brakes into pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had used to God's glory but that had become an idol of the Israelites who had been burning incense to it. 2 Kings 18:4      ⁃    Hezekiah is facing the enemy of Assyria as they are coming to conquer Jerusalem and so in 2 Kings 20:20 we read that he built a tunnel and a pool. In the 1880's the Siloam Inscription was discovered. It tells the story of the building of the tunnel. Hezekiah built this tunnel to ensure there would be water when under siege by the Assyrian army by diverting the Gehon spring into Jerusalem leaving no fresh water available to the Assyrian army.      ⁃    Then the siege begins against Jerusalem. 2 Kings 18:28-29 the king's commander, speaking in Hebrew, calls out that the king of Assyria says that Hezekiah has deceived you because he will not be able to deliver you from me and my army. The king of Assyria is trying to get the people in Jerusalem to just give up.     ⁃    Then Hezekiah prays a beautiful prayer - 2 Kings 19:15-16 and God listens and the King of Assyria is defeated by God Himself. 2 Kings 19:35-36. The Assyrians withdraw and return to Nineveh and the siege is ended.     ⁃    Then Hezekiah becomes very ill to the point of death. Isaiah comes to Hezekiah to tell him to put his house in order. Hezekiah weeps and prays and God sees Hezekiah's tears and hears his prayer and God heals him. 2 Kings 20:1-5      ⁃    Hezekiah is visited by the Babylonians, a rising power that will ultimately defeat the Assyrians. 2 Kings 20:13 we read of Hezekiah being tempted by pride. The prophet Isaiah then brings a word to Hezekiah telling him that everything you just showed off to the Babylonians will be taken by Babylonians. Hezekiah repents.     ⁃    The prophets Micah and Isaiah were very active during Hezekiah's reign.     ⁃    Hezekiah was one of the greatest kings the nation had ever known. 2 Kings 18:5-6 tells us that Hezekiah trusted the Lord, that there was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, both before and after him, that Hezekiah held fast to the Lord and did not stop following God and that he kept the commands of the Lord. Exploring the Connection Between Matthew 14 and 2 Chronicles For BibleInTen.com  By DH, 9th December 2025 Welcome back to Bible in Ten! In the last episode, we explored how every event in Matthew 14 functions as a living re-enactment of the entire history of Israel. Building on the astounding groundwork laid in the previous commentary - where CG showed how Israel's past and future are woven typologically and chronologically into Matthew's narrative - we now turn to yet another beautiful structural pattern in Scripture. Matthew's Gospel contains 28 chapters, and remarkably, it mirrors the first 28 books of the Old Testament as arranged in the Christian Bible. So in this episode, having concluded our walk through Matthew 14, we'll now look at its fascinating counterpart: Book 14 of the Old Testament, 2 Chronicles.   The Pattern: Matthew as the Echo of the Old Testament  The Gospel of Matthew has been recognised for its deep structural connection to the Old Testament, and one striking pattern is how each chapter of Matthew echoes themes found in the corresponding book from the Old Testament. Superior Scholars of the Word like Charlie Garret from the Superior Word have explained this pattern before.    Check out the episode linked in the description “the book of Matthew an introduction part 2 a” https://www.bibleinten.com/the-book-of-matthew-an-introduction-part-iia/   As book 1, Genesis introduces origins and genealogies, Matthew 1 opens with the genealogy of Christ. As book 2, Exodus recounts Israel's deliverance and early threats against God's chosen deliverer, Matthew 2 presents Jesus' birth, the flight into Egypt, and Herod's murderous rage. This pattern continues throughout the Gospel, with Matthew's chapters reflecting, summarizing, or re-framing the major themes of each Old Testament book.   So that the readers of the Old Testament have another source of proof to consider when evaluating the authority of the New Testament.   God certainly is not through with the Jew!   Whether or not Matthew intended this one-to-one mapping seems unlikely but, All Scripture is God breathed and so we can say God did intend them!   Furthermore we can therefore gain further confidence in book order and authority of the Scriptures as presented in the Christian Bible. The parallels are rich and unmistakable, showing Jesus as the fulfillment, continuation, and climax of Israel's story from Genesis to 2nd Chronicles. And the parallels are stunning. 2 Chronicles: Israel's Story in Summary   2 Chronicles is more than a historical account but contains a pattern of national Israel's spiritual trajectory. Parallel 1 - Sound advice is rejected.   (2 Ch. 10) Parallel 2 - Death Ends an Era    (2 Ch. 11) Parallel 3 - The people enter wilderness/exile.  (2 Ch. 12) Parallel 4 - God remains faithful.   (2 Ch 21) Parallel 5 - Out of Control and under threat.  (2 Chr 36) Parallel 6 - Restoration under a new leader (2 Chr 36:22-23) Now let us consider how every one of these six steps reappears in the same sequence in Matthew 14. Parallel #1: Sound advice is rejected 2 Chronicles Rehoboam rejects the counsel of the elders.      IN 2 Chronicles 10:6-8  (ICB) 6 There were some elders who had helped Solomon make decisions during his lifetime. So King Rehoboam asked them what he should do. He said, “How do you think I should answer these people?” 7 They answered, “Be kind to these people. Please them and give them a kind answer. If you do, they will serve you always.” 8 But Rehoboam did not listen to the advice the elders gave him.  Matthew 14 Herod plays a similar role.  He rejects John the Baptist, the final prophet under the Law.  Matthew 14 opens with the murder of the prophet Parallel #2: Death Ends an Era   2 Chronicles   After Solomon's death, the kingdom fractures. Rehoboam wants to fight and restore unity, but God says: “You shall not go up or fight against your brothers… for this thing is from Me.”  2 Chronicles 11:4 At this moment where God: cuts off the northern tribes from the Davidic monarchy, ends the united kingdom, begins a new era: Judah and Israel now separated. Matthew 14 John the Baptist's death signals the end of the old covenant era. The Law and the Prophets are closing; the Messiah's ministry moves into a new phase. Just as Solomon's death closed an age, John's death announces another ending—and a new beginning. Parallel #3: Wilderness as Divine Reset  2 Chronicles Israel repeatedly enters “wilderness experiences”: exile, loss, scattering and yet God preserves them and promises restoration. Israel abandons God (12:1). God sends Shishak of Egypt to strip them of security (12:2-4). A prophet says: “You have abandoned Me; therefore I have abandoned you.” (12:5) Judah is thrown into deep distress  - a wilderness-like, spiritual low point. They humble themselves (12:6). God responds with partial deliverance, not destruction (12:7-8).   Matthew 14 Immediately after John's death, the people follow Jesus into a desolate place. Here, a remnant gathers, they receive teaching, they are fed miraculously. Like Chronicles, in the wilderness is the place where God uses to reset the story. Parallel #4: The Remnant Theme   2 Chronicles God preserves a remnant who will return and rebuild.   “Yet the LORD was not willing to destroy the house of David,  because of the covenant”   2 Chronicles 21:7 Matthew 14 Jesus feeds the remnant in the wilderness: 5 loaves → God's grace Bread in the wilderness → Jesus the Bread of Life 12 baskets of Leftovers → abundance for the true Israel Both narratives insist: Israel is not destroyed; God preserves His people.  God is not finished with Israel.   “All Israel will be Saved” after the Church Age has finished (Romans Chapter 9-11 & the entire book of Revelation) Parallel #5: Israel “Out of control and Under Threat”  2 Chronicles The exile is described as being: Scattered,   2 Chronicles 36:19-20 (implied scattering through destruction and captivity) under threat, carried far away,    “He carried into exile to Babylon those who had escaped from the sword…” 2 Chronicles 36:20 yet preserved,    2 Chronicles 36:21  “The land enjoyed its sabbath rests… until the seventy years were completed…”   This verse shows God's intentional preservation of His plan, His land, and His people during exile. and finally brought home by God (2 Chr 36:23). Matthew 14 The disciples - symbolizing Israel - enter a boat and are: tossed by waves, in danger, alone in the night, visited by their God, saved by His hand, and brought safely to the other shore. This exile-and-return is played out on the Sea of Galilee. With the physical visitation of Jesus the God marking this encounter of added signficance. Peter's rescue mirrors the believers individual walk: Beginning with faith in Jesus the Lord, then failing to keep our eyes on Jesus, sinking, crying out and saved. Parallel #6: Restoration Under a New Leader   2 Chronicles Ends With… A new ruler: Cyrus A new beginning A return to the land A restoration of worship Matthew 14 Ends With… Recognition that Jesus is the God Safe arrival in Gennesaret “Princely Garden” - a fore shadow of the Renewed Kingdom of the Lord to come Healing, restoration, and grace Israel symbolically entering the promise of a renewed covenant Jesus is greater than Cyrus, His arrival on this land not only blessed the people in the land at the time, but it also symbolises his own future return which brings an infinitely greater restoration, when Jesus the Lord returns and the curse on the earth is reversed! CONCLUSION   The cohesion between 2 Chronicles and Matthew 14 reinforces typological assertions in the previous episode to be valid, correct and intentional. Matthew 14 isn't just a miracle chapter, or a super exciting day in the life of Jesus as it has most often been presented in sunday school but It's Israel's salvation history - from Israel leader rejection to Israel people exile, preservation and individual salvation offer and final restoration - retold through Jesus in a magnificent way. 2 Chronicles closes the Old Testament storyline. Matthew 14 shows Jesus stepping into that story as its fulfillment. He is the Prophet rejected, the God who walks on the sea, the Savior who brings His people home.  

The entire chapter 39 of the Kitzur is about one practical question: “I'm about to sit down for a full bread meal in 15 minutes, but I'm starving right now – can I grab a snack without making a separate after-bracha later?” The answer is mostly yes. If you eat (or drink anything except wine) before washing for bread and you will eat/drink the same thing again during the meal, many authorities (including the Mishnah Berurah's primary opinion) say the Birkat Hamazon at the end covers everything you ate earlier – no extra after-bracha is not needed. To stay safe from doubt, the Kitzur's advice is simple: either (a) don't eat those foods before the meal, or (b) make sure you eat a little of the same food again during the meal so everything is clearly connected.Wine is the big exception (as always): it always needs its own before-bracha, and if you drink it before the meal you should either drink a revi'it again after Birkat Hamazon and make Al Hagefen, or simply avoid wine until Kiddush. Cakes, cookies, pretzels, and other mezonot items follow the lenient rule – if you'll have mezonot again during the meal, Birkat Hamazon covers the pre-meal nosh too. Rev. James Harper preaches on Amos 9:11-15 as part of our Advent Sermon Series, "Prophets Foretold."    When everything in life seems to be falling apart, we desperately need hope. The prophet Amos spoke to a prosperous but spiritually broken Israel, promising that God would repair what was broken. Human solutions, even religious ones, cannot fix spiritual brokenness - just as dead people cannot resurrect themselves. God provided the solution through the incarnation, when Jesus took on flesh to rescue humanity. The perfect Son of God was broken on the cross so that broken people could be healed. While we await complete restoration in the new creation, Jesus offers healing for wounded hearts today, inviting us to bring our pain directly to Him rather than trying to self-medicate or fix ourselves.

As you're driving down the road, you're going to notice a lot of different types of signs. Some signs are instructional, like “stop” or “yield.” They're telling you something to do. Other signs are informational; they're communicating some kind of relevant information to you. They might say the name of the road you're on, or what the street up ahead is called. And then you have the invitational signs; the gym I used to go to had a sign that said “You are now entering the judgment free zone.” And then you also have warning signs, the signs that try to caution you that there is some kind of danger or impending doom; they'll say “the road is out ahead” or “abandon all hope ye who enter here” or “Welcome to California.”In the Bible, God would use particular things called “signs” to direct people to spiritual truth. For example, the miracles of Jesus were often called “signs” because they authenticated His deity. In other words, they proved that he was God. Another type of “sign” in the Scripture is prophecy: the foretelling of future events. Telling us about things that have not yet happened, the things yet to come. By telling us what would happen before it happened, God proved that He is real, that He is the one who made these things happen, and that He knows the future, and that we can trust Him.In the Christmas story, in the book of Matthew, we see 7 prophecies that are fulfilled in the first coming of Christ.
