1 Kings 12 tells us of Rehoboam's folly following the death of Solomon. Rehoboam fails to heed the wise counsel of the elders and rather harkens to the ridiculous reasoning of his entitled peers. The outcome of this is the division of the kingdom, as prophesied by Ahijah. Jeroboam is termed in scripture "the man who caused Israel to sin". Jeroboam set up two golden calves - the one in the north at Dan; and the other in Beersheba in the south. Rehoboam sent his treasurer to collect the tribute from Israel. But they stoned the treasurer causing Rehoboam to flee in his chariot. Rehoboam then mustered his army but was dissuaded from fighting against his brethren by the prophet Shemaiah who tells the king that the division is from the LORD. To his credit Rehoboam responded to the Word of God and sent the army home. King Jeroboam from the northern branch of the divided kingdom next changes the timing of the feast of worship from the seventh to the eighth month. This idolatrous man made his priests from the lowest of the people. All of this was designed to maintain the division. Jeroboam was fearful that Israel might, if they went to the Feast in Jerusalem, be reconciled to Rehoboam. This 38th chapter of Jeremiah told of the malevolent treatment afforded the prophet at the hands of the treacherous princes casting him into the mire (mud) of the cistern. He was rescued by the kind and faithful Ethiopian, Ebed-melech. Our Sovereign recompensed the Ethiopian eunuch's kindness to Yahweh's prophet. After his deliverance Jeremiah presented his entreaties secretly to the king. Jeremiah again counsels the king to save Judah by surrendering to the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar.Mark 12 begins with the parable of the tenants of the vineyard which spoke of Israel. The parable tells of the constant rejection of God's servants, the prophets; and the ultimate sin of Israel in rejecting the Son of the Father. The nation's wicked rulers saw themselves in Jesus' words and fulfilled the prophecy of our Lord in plotting Jesus' death. Christ's enemies make several attempts to undermine our Lord's authority. The chapter shows that each prominent party posed hypothetical questions. The first was from an alliance of the Herodians, who were pragmatists who were prepared to cooperate with Rome, and the arch enemies of the Herodians - the Pharisees. The question from this unholy alliance was on taxation. The master not only answers majestically, but he directs their minds to God's claims on them. We are next told of the Sadducees posing their question on resurrection. This sect were the priestly class. They were wealthy and used their power to accumulate wealth. The Sadducees did not accept the teaching of the resurrection; nor any of the Scriptures apart from the 5 Books of Moses. These hypocrites were likewise confounded by incontestable proof from Exodus 3 - one of the five writings that were accepted by them - of the raising of the dead. The Scribes with the Pharisees pose a problem to our Lord as to which commandment was the greatest. Jesus answers by showing that the entire message of the Law and the Prophets hung equally on the love of God and the love one's neighbour. Christ then turns the tables on his foes through a simple question in two parts;- 1) whose son is the Messiah (easy they thought - David's of course); and, part 2) how then in Psalm 110 is the Christ spoken of as David's Lord? The inescapable answer was that the Christ, Messiah, was greater because he was the Son of God as well as son of David. Listen to Him: The Transfiguration and the Tent of the Heart Today's Homily reflects on the mystery of the Transfiguration, celebrated twice each year, . . . . . . and draws connections between the vision in the Book of Daniel, the Gospel account, and the liturgy of the Mass. The Homily emphasizes that the Transfiguration reveals Jesus not just as a foretaste of the Resurrection, but as the One who fully bears the divine authority, glory, and voice of God. On the mountain, the veil of His humility falls away, revealing His luminous divinity in the presence of Moses (the Law) and Elijah (the Prophets), both of whom find their fulfillment in Christ. Our Almighty Father Commands the Disciples to “Listen to Him” God's voice from the cloud affirms Jesus as His Son and commands the disciples to “listen to Him,” shifting focus from sight to hearing and from temporary visions to the enduring “tent of the heart.” The Homily applies this mystery to the Mass, where hearts are lifted with Christ, who becomes truly present on the altar. He speaks through them, but the fullness of his speaking is found in and through Jesus Christ. What Almighty God is saying to St. Peter, you only need one tent. You don't need three. You need that tent of permanence in your heart where you abide with him and listen to him and enthrone him and live with him. The Lord never says it's wrong to ask for what you did, but he clarifies what you should be asking for. Listen to him. Remain with him. Abide with him and why. The eye sees many things. But what the eye sees, passes very quickly and fades. However, listening, when we listen and when we retain what is said, what is heard continues to speak, and it remains. When Christopher Columbus brought tobacco to Europe, it became a miracle drug. It was used for over 250 maladies (e.g., warts, asthma, ulcers, arrow wounds, toothaches, bad breath, deafness, tonsillitis, nosebleeds, epilepsy, etc.). From 1790 to 1830, alcohol consumption rose in America. Most men and some women and children drank alcohol regularly. Steven Harper recorded that in 1820, the upstate New York region near Joseph's home made a lot of corn whiskey and exported 65,277 gallons and 69 tons of beer. However, by 1830, temperance movements across the states—including a 239-member society in Kirtland—began attacking alcohol, tobacco, and other social ills (Harper, Making Sense of the D&C, 322-323). Several other food issues were discussed in local newspapers. A 19th-20th century contemporary of the Saints, Catherine Beecher, spoke against tea and coffee specifically as dangerous as alcohol. On February 1, 1833, four weeks before Joseph received this revelation, a Kirtland distillery (1819- 1833) closed due to a local temperance society's work to decrease their clients (P.H. Peterson, 13). It was part of a national organization, with the nearby larger city of Albany, NY, boasting twelve temperance societies. Joseph subscribed to local newspapers that also denounced alcohol consumption. It was a national issue, and it was on Joseph's mind. These local issues, and Emma's request, probably contributed to the Prophet Joseph's desire to learn the Lord's will on the subject. The Word of Wisdom differs from regularly published temperance society claims as it never claimed to be a cure for a list of ills, nor the cause of many illnesses (including cholera). Temperance societies also built on biblical warnings like Ephesians 5:18, that denounces excessive use of wine, or Proverbs 23:2 on gluttony (and 23:21; Deut. 21:20; Luke 21:34). Revelation in Kirtland, Ohio On February 27, 1833, Joseph met on the upper level of the Whitney's Store with a group of about 22 Saints for an institute-style class called "the school of the prophets." Zebedee Coltrin remembered that Joseph received this revelation in an adjoining room with only two or three others present, right before the school met. When he entered the school of the prophets, he had the revelation in his hand. As he began to read, all but one were using tobacco, but all put down their pipes as he read. Also at the School of the Prophets a remarkable vision occurred in which several members of the group saw Jesus Christ and/or Heavenly Father. Eye witness accounts are explored in this video podcast. Monday, 11 August 2025   Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.” Matthew 12:24   “And the Pharisees, having heard, they said, ‘This, not He ejects the demons if not in Beelzebul, prince of the demons'” (CG).   In the previous verse, the people, although not committed to the proposition, somewhat suspected that Jesus may be the Son of David. Having stated this, the usual suspects now chime in. Matthew records, “And the Pharisees, having heard.”   Having seen their track record thus far, it can already be surmised that these men were indignant at the very thought of Jesus being the anticipated Messiah. Therefore, “they said, ‘This, not He ejects the demons if not in Beelzebul, prince of the demons.'”   There is no article before “prince” or “ruler” (NKJV). Thus, the statement speaks of a title more than a position. One can see the emphatic retort to the people's questioning –   23 ‘Not any, this, He is the Son of David?' 24 ‘This, not He ejects the demons if not in Beelzebul, prince of the demons.'   In order to draw the people's speculation away from Jesus possibly being the Son of David, they go to the most extreme resolution possible. Not only is He not the Son of David, but He also isn't even just a charlatan. Rather, He has power, but that power is surely derived from he who is prince of the demons!   They couldn't deny that the miracles were real. The evidence was there before them. But they would never come to acknowledge that what Jesus did was of God. Therefore, the certain explanation that they clung to was that Jesus' power was demonic.   Because of their words, Jesus will carefully explain why their reasoning is faulty and why they are in serious trouble before God because of their accusation.   Life application: On 24 June 2025, Adam Sheafe was arrested for crucifying an Arizona pastor several months earlier. Sheafe intended to kill fourteen more pastors, all because they believe in Jesus. The news service said –   “The suspect described his plan as ‘Operation First Commandment' and claimed that the Bible's New Testament teachings about Jesus Christ go against the biblical commandment that says, ‘You shall have no other gods before me.' Sheafe stated, ‘His commandments have been annulled by this character called Jesus, a human being who I believe is the son of Satan'” (American Military News).   Sheafe is obviously theologically confused. But what would lead someone to take such a stand? The answer is because he was told something about Scripture that was incorrect and, instead of doing the research, he trusted what he was told.   The people of Israel were presented with the obvious truth that Jesus was capable of healing the deaf and blind, and yet they questioned whether He was the Messiah or not. To rob them of any faith that may have sprouted in their hearts, the Pharisees quickly intervened and assured them that Jesus was healing by the power of Beelzebul.   It is one thing to listen to authority figures, and it is another to do so without checking what they say. Israel was presented with their Messiah. They rejected Him as a nation, and it caused them to, once again, fall under the curses of the Law of Moses. They had agreed to the law, they were to live by it, and they were to accept what it taught.   As Jesus noted in John 5, Moses wrote about Him. In Luke 24:27, it says, “beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” Israel rejected this. They continue to do so today.   Unfortunately, because of the teachings of modern-day Judaizers and Hebrew Roots adherents, this attitude has spread around the world. Like the Roman Catholic Church, their doctrine denies the all-sufficiency of Christ's work, mandating individual works as a part of the salvation process.   Law has been the problem since the first days of man on earth. It remains a problem to this day. It is what puts a wall between God and man. What is needed is God's grace. We cannot find life without it, and we cannot find healing and restoration apart from it.   May we remember this lesson. Jesus came to demonstrate to Israel that He was their Messiah. As a part of this demonstration, He gave His life up in fulfillment of the Law of Moses. Why would we ever want to go back to that? May we go forward in God's grace, living for Him and honoring Him by honoring the full, finished, final, and forever work of Jesus Christ our Lord.   Lord God, thank You for the all-sufficient nature of Christ's work. Through what He has done, we are fully reconciled to You. Thank You for Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Send us a textEvery so often, the Lord gives us a small glimpse of His boundless “majesty and power” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:47) through sweeping revelations to His prophets. Doctrine and Covenants 88 is such a revelation—one about light and glory and kingdoms that can make our earthly cares seem insignificant by comparison. Even if we can't grasp all of what the Lord is teaching us, we can at least sense that there's far more to eternity than what we now comprehend. Of course, the Lord didn't speak of these grand mysteries to intimidate us or make us feel small. In fact, He promised, “The day shall come when you shall comprehend even God” (verse 49; italics added). Perhaps it was to that lofty end that the Lord urged His Saints in Kirtland to form the School of the Prophets. “Organize yourselves,” He said. “Prepare every needful thing; and establish … a house of God” (verse 119). Revelation Dates: February 27 – March 15, 1833 Revelation Places: Kirtland, Ohio Section 89 - Historical Background: In a small upstairs room in Bishop Whitney's store, around 22 Elders gathered tightly together to attend the School of the Prophets. The purpose of the school was to learn the mysteries of God and sacred truths in preparation for their ministry. During the meeting, the Elders would light their pipes and smoke. When the pipe tobacco was exhausted, they would bite off a large piece of chewing tobacco. This was a common practice for the day. They had not been taught their bodies are considered sanctified tabernacles. The use of liquor, tobacco, coffee, tea and other stimulants were commonly accepted. Often, when Joseph entered the room to give instruction, he would find himself in a cloud of tobacco smoke. This, along with the complaints from Emma who cleaned the spittoons and the disgusting mess on the floor, made the Prophet think upon the matter. He inquired of the Lord and received this revelation, which went far beyond tobacco, known as the Word of Wisdom. Recap: For the health and general welfare of all the saints, the Lord reveals a Word of Wisdom. In consequence of evil and conspiring men, warns them to abstain from wine, strong drinks, tobacco, and hot drinks (later defined as coffee and tea). Rather, every herb and fruit should be used in the season. Meat is ordained for the use of man, sparingly. Grains is also ordained for the use of man and beast. Obedience to this warning promises health and wisdom. Section 90 - Historical Background: At this critical time of the restoration, the Lord knew his church was going into a perilous phase in its development. Over the next two years, the Lord would appoint relatively  inexperienced men to lead the church, including the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Seventy, Stake high councils, Stake Presidents and Bishops. These high offices and noble titles in the church would be a supreme test which many would fail. The Lord demonstrated a great deal of love and patience with these leaders. This section formally organizes the First Presidency who hold the keys of the Priesthood. It was shortly after this revelation was given that Joseph ordained Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams as Counselors in the First Presidency. Recap: The keys of the Priesthood are given to the First Presidency, consisting of Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams. They are to receive revelations for the entire church. The First Presidency are to set in order the church, learn and study, and continue in these offices for the remainder of their lives. There should be no pride, slothfulness or uncleanliness. Section 91 - Historical Background: At this time, Joseph was revising the Old Testament. He came across the books referred to as the “Apocrypha,” meaning “hidden,” and didn't know if they were worthy of including in the bible or were merely an appendix to the bible. He took this inquiry to the Lord. Recap: In the Apocrypha, there are many aspects which are true, but many things are not true. Therefore, they are not trustworthy to be included with the bible, nor should they be translated or revised. The Apocrypha should not be intermingled with the revelations from God. Any person led by the Spirit can benefit from the Apocrypha, but without the Spirit there is no benefit.  Section 92 - Historical Background: This revelation relates to an earlier revelation in section 82, relating to the Law of Consecration. Now the Lord wants Frederick G. Williams added to the order. Recap: As a new counselor in the First Presidency, the Lord commands Frederick G. Williams to be included in the United Order, known as the Law of Consecration.

This "celestial curriculum" prepares us to "magnify the calling" whereunto we are called and to warn our neighbors. Emma was twenty-nine years old—and seven months pregnant—when, in the fall of 1832, their family moved from the John Johnson farm in Hiram Ohio to Kirtland, approximately thirty miles north. Joseph and Emma set up their humble home in the rooms above Newel K. Whitney's store. Shortly thereafter, Joseph left for New York City to buy supplies for the Missouri saints. A little over a month later, on 6 November, Emma gave birth to Joseph Smith III, her fourth child, but the first to survive. Joseph returned from New York City just hours after his birth. Their adopted daughter, Julia Murdock Smith, was eighteen months old. In addition to the family's quarters, Joseph used one of the rooms for an office to complete his Bible translation. Shortly after Christmas, on December 27, Joseph asked nine high priests to join him in his office to teach them about revelation. They each came focused and unified on receiving God's will, and exercising their faith. They each knelt and prayed individually to be of one heart and one mind. Following the prayers, Joseph began to receive the revelation, with Fredrick G. Williams acting as scribe. By 9:00 p.m., the revelation was not finished, so the nine men returned the next day when the Lord revealed even more. These instructions and revelations formed the basis of the School of Prophets, a unique organization meeting to discuss revelation, future plans and challenges faced by this early community of Saints.
