In this quick but powerful shiur on Vayakhel-Pekudei, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe shares an insight from Rabbi Yaakov Nagel (Senior Rabbi of Heimish of Houston) about the unique double-sided drapes (Yeri'ot) in the Mishkan. While most embroidery (Ma'asei Choshev) was identical on both sides, one special curtain at the entrance to the Kodesh HaKodashim (Holy of Holies) featured a completely different image on the inner side—yet no human ever saw it. The Kohen Gadol entered once a year, performed the Yom Kippur service, and exited backward, never turning to view the inner curtain. So why invest in an unseen design?Rabbi Wolbe explains: It teaches that Hashem's perspective often differs radically from ours. We may undervalue a mitzvah (thinking it's "small") or ourselves (feeling unworthy or limited), but Hashem sees infinite worth. A simple act—holding back lashon hara, a quiet prayer, a moment of restraint—may earn unimaginable reward in heaven. Conversely, we sometimes overestimate our deeds. The hidden curtain reminds us: some mitzvot and personal potentials are visible only to Hashem, whose valuation transcends human sight. In Day 134 (p. 753, final section of the Gate of Flattery), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe concludes the chapter with practical safeguards against Chanufah (flattery). To escape its snare, one must flee honor (Kavod) entirely—those unconcerned with status never need to flatter for gain. Avoid deriving benefit from others, as most flattery stems from expecting reciprocity (e.g., fake compliments for favors, business, or social access). Rabbi Wolbe shares his personal rejection of a book teaching manipulative "networking" flattery, emphasizing genuine relationships over disingenuous gain.Flattery corrupts mitzvot (e.g., leading services for praise instead of L'shem Shamayim) and risks spiritual downfall through negative environments. One must intentionally surround oneself with the righteous and wise (Proverbs: "He who walks with wise men will be wise"), distancing from sinners, mockers, or corrupt cultures—even if it means solitude, caves, or desert isolation (as in Lamentations). In our generation of pervasive media, apps, social influence, and celebrity values (e.g., Golden Globes), be deliberate: delete harmful apps, limit exposure, choose uplifting company, and protect children from bad influences. Lessons from the Life of the Prophets

Surah Al-Anbiya (The Prophets) is the 21st chapter of the Qur'an and contains 112 verses. It emphasizes the oneness of God (Tawhid), the reality of the Day of Judgment, and the role of prophets as guides for humanity. The surah recounts stories of several prophets—including Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Dawud (David), Sulaiman (Solomon), Ayyub (Job), Yunus (Jonah), Zakariya (Zechariah), and Isa (Jesus)—showing how they trusted in God during trials and were ultimately helped by Him. A key message of the surah is that all prophets brought the same core message: to worship one God and live righteously. It also reminds people that the world is temporary and urges them to reflect, repent, and prepare for the Hereafter. It's an important book because it records Israel's place in God's program: from Babylon all the way through the Millennium. Both Zephaniah and Jeremiah prophesied to a politically prospering people of coming judgment. Habakkuk means to embrace. Habakkuk's main theme is God's consistency with Himself in view of permitted evil. Why do bad things happen to good people? The latter half of the Book of Exodus is almost exclusively oriented around the Tabernacle. In this week's double Parsha, the nation executes the plans given to Moshe. Thursday, 12 March 2026   Peter said to Him, “From strangers.” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. Matthew 17:26   “He says to Him, Peter, ‘From the unfamilars.' Jesus, He says to him, ‘Hence, the sons, they are exempt'” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus asked Peter what he thought. Do the kings of the earth take tribute and census from their sons or unfamilars? Next, we read, “He says to Him, Peter, ‘From the unfamilars.'”   It would be counterproductive and unkingly for a king to take any such collection from his sons. This is a precept that would be perfectly understood from their own Scriptures. At the time of their first king, Saul, it was seen that the son of the king would be exempt from such things, even if it was a son through marriage –   “So the men of Israel said, ‘Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father's house exemption from taxes in Israel.'” 1 Samuel 17:25   The king was the one who levied taxes on the people. He was the one to take the people's sons and daughters for his own household use, and for the army he established (see 1 Samuel 8:10-18). His own sons usually did serve in the military with him, but they were not obligated to the standard impositions placed on the people for the sake of his kingdom. Peter understood this. In response to this, we read, “Jesus, He says to him, ‘Hence, the sons, they are exempt.'”   A new word is seen here, eleutheros, unrestrained, meaning “to go at pleasure.” It is used in the sense of citizenship, where a person is not a slave. In this case, it means unrestrained from the burdens that support the king and his kingdom.   Jesus is making a point that Peter should clue into. If Jesus is the Messiah, He is God's Son. Those who are His will belong to the household of God as sons. This is the point He makes in John 8 –   “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.' 33 They answered Him, ‘We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free'?' 34 Jesus answered them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.'” John 8:31-36   If Jesus is God's Son, and those who are brought into sonship with God through Him, then why would they pay for the tributes and census for the maintenance of the temple of His (and thus their) Father?   Further, and a point that is not yet understood by the disciples, the temple is an edifice that pointed to Jesus. He is the fulfillment of everything the temple anticipated. Understanding these things puts the matter in proper perspective.   Life application: Jesus was born under the Law of Moses, a law He gave to the people of Israel. By subordinating Himself to the Law, He was required to be obedient to it. This included things that He was logically exempt from, but which required obedience to fulfill all righteousness.   And this is what He said He would do at an early point in His ministry –   “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” Matthew 5:17   In His fulfillment of the law, including those things that He would normally be exempt from, such as the temple taxes, the law is annulled through Him for anyone who has come to Him by faith. He becomes a son of God. And, as He said, “...if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”   However, being under law is not freedom. It is a mark of bondage to sin. As such, to reimpose the standards of the law upon oneself, it is a denial of sonship. It is as if the person voluntarily excommunicates himself from a relationship with his Father in heaven.   Paul explains this in meticulous detail in his epistles, especially Galatians. Those who come to Christ are not under law but under grace. Be sure to revel in the freedom by which Christ has made us free. Do not allow yourself to be brought back under the yoke of slavery, meaning law. It is an act of contempt for what God in Christ has done.   Live out your freedom in gratitude for what He has done for us. This is what we are to do!   Lord God, thank You that we are Your sons through faith in what Jesus has done. The pressure is off. We are free from the bondage of slavery to sin. Law no longer has authority over us! We can now revel in Your grace and goodness because of Jesus. Hallelujah and amen.

He begins with the positive: one should "flatter" one's wife to preserve shalom bayit—genuinely compliment her cooking, appearance, and character (not lying, but finding and highlighting her unique beauty and goodness, as every person has redeemable qualities viewed through the right lens). This extends to rabbis flattering students to encourage Torah learning, acceptance of rebuke, and mitzvah observance; creditors to ease pressure; and anyone influenceable toward good—using pleasant, positive words to open hearts rather than harsh confrontation, which often fails in our generation.The episode contrasts this with forbidden flattery: validating the wicked (even for personal gain), excessive courtesy that implies approval, or building false trust to later exploit (genevat da'at – stealing the mind, e.g., pretending interest as a customer for air conditioning). Flattery closes doors of teshuvah by reinforcing evil without shame, brings divine wrath, blocks prayers, and perverts justice (e.g., lawyers overly friendly with judges). In this inspiring wrap-up to Sefer Shemot, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe focuses on the profound symbolism of the Kiyor (copper laver/washbasin) in Vayakheil (Exodus 38:8), made from the mirrors donated by the Jewish women ("Marot Hatzovot" – mirrors of the legions who gathered at the Tent of Meeting). Prophets to the Southern Kingdom is Chuck's commentary on the books of Joel, Micah, Zephaniah, and Habakkuk. The Prophets to the Southern Kingdom spoke many promises of Israel's return to the land, Christ's second coming and the overall time line from Babylon all the way through the Millennium. In a time of great turmoil, these men focused on the hope of the coming Messiah and His Kingdom. The book of Joel is a neglected book among Bible scholars. It's an important book because it records Israel's place in God's program: from Babylon all the way through the Millennium. Micah's message was heeded, repentance followed, and disaster was postponed for a century. Here was a prophet that changed history! One man can make a difference. Both Zephaniah and Jeremiah prophesied to a politically prospering people of coming judgment. Habakkuk means to embrace. Habakkuk's main theme is God's consistency with Himself in view of permitted evil. Why do bad things happen to good people? In this continuation of the Gate of Flattery (Sha'ar HaChanufah), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe examines the seventh component: the sin of abstaining from rebuke (tochacha) when one knows the community or individuals are "stiff-necked" (k'shei oref) and unlikely to listen. While it's a mitzvah not to reprove a mocker who will hate you (per Proverbs), one must not assume failure without trying—perhaps the words will penetrate and inspire change. Even righteous people were punished in the Temple's destruction for not rebuking when possible. Silence can imply agreement, especially when hearing lashon hara, profanity, or mockery of Torah/mitzvot; one should speak wisely or zealously defend Hashem's honor (as in Ramchal's Mesilat Yesharim, Ch. 19), showing love for God by hating His enemies and subduing evil influence.Rabbi Wolbe stresses strategic rebuke—knowing the person (e.g., parents sometimes achieve more by silent example than words), avoiding unnecessary hatred, and recognizing when flattery or excessive courtesy to the wicked is forbidden (except out of real fear for safety). He cites Mordechai's refusal to bow to Haman as exemplary: as leader, he could not validate evil, even for peace. Neutrality or honor toward the wicked (e.g., praising them or being overly cordial) validates sin and risks personal corruption through constant exposure. Holly Pivec and Doug Geivett on Two Decades of Tracking the NAR's Apostles and Prophets You walk into a church on Sunday morning. The worship band plays songs you've heard on Christian radio for years. The lyrics feel familiar, uplifting.
