Welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends brought to you by my new novel ‘The Liberty Code”, available at book baby, amazon and on audiobook at barnesandnoble.com. Annie Haslam and Jim McCarty will be sharing an intimate discussion and visual presentation for the band history of Renaissance followed by a Renaissance performance featuring, for the first time, members of both eras of the band performing their classic songs together. Renaissance had their farewell tour last October 2024 and did not expect to perform live again. Annie, who's been at the forefront of the group's story for 50 years, recently was approached by an Edwardsville/St Louis promoter to return to the Wildey Theatre for a ‘one woman” show! After much deliberation, the idea grew into something bigger when Annie contacted Jim McCarty to be a part of the show and then return to the full Renaissance lineup, the band he, initially, co-founded. A once in a lifetime event of Symphonic Rock at its finest! "All Renaissance and McCarty fans are invited to experience our coming full circle," Annie says enthusiastically, “that was destined to happen one day!" PLEASE WELCOME TWO MUSIC LEGENDS… Two of my favorite people ….Jim McCarty of Renaissance, Box of Frogs and original drummer and founding member of The Yardbirds and Annie Haslam legendary songstress of symphonic rock's Renaissance to Interviewing the Legends. In this episode of Hawthornden's Como Conversazione, another session of practical translation: the reading and comparing of many renditions of one passage, to see how translators make their choices. But the text we'll be examining, 1001 Nights, presents an unusual challenge. Unlike with the Proust that we discussed in the first episode, there is not one fixed source text to work with. There were many retellings of Scheherazade's tales over the centuries, which were then written down as many different manuscripts. What, then, does it mean for a translator to “take liberties,” or to be “faithful to the text”?

Is classical music “entertainment”? Timothy Myers, conductor and music director of the Austin Opera, argues that it's an antidote to entertainment. Here, he shares his story of how he became a conductor and discusses what he finds inspiring about orchestral performance. In this clip from the Beauty at Work podcast, host Brandon Vaidyanathan speaks with Timothy Myers, acclaimed conductor and Music Director of the Austin Opera. Myers shares deeply personal stories—from his early musical memories at a powwow in Oklahoma to the transformative moment of hearing Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade live. He reflects on the collaborative nature of conducting, the aesthetic principles behind orchestral sound, and why live performance is more than entertainment—it's a sacred act of communal enchantment. For the full interview see: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2043099/episodes/14411268For the broader project, visit: https://www.beautyatwork.netSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/BeautyatWorkPodcast #TimothyMyers #BeautyAtWork #ClassicalMusic #OrchestralMusic #AustinOpera #LivePerformance #MusicAndBeauty #Conducting #ArtisticLeadership #MusicPodcast #EnchantmentThroughArt #BrandonVaidyanathan #SacredArt #PowerOfSound #MusicalJourney #ModernClassicalSupport the show
Review this classic episode featuring Salamishah and Scheherazade Tillet on making black survivors visible. Sisters can either be torn apart or drawn together due to sexual violence. Rutgers professor and Pulitzer Prize winner Salamishah Tillet and her sister, artist and curator Scheherazade Tillet, drew together after Salamishah shared her rape story. Together they co-founded "A Long Walk Home" to help Black women and girls share their own stories of shame, dysmorphia, injustice, recognizing trigger issues, survival, managing memories, finding community, and locating resources for recovering. Hosts: Claire Kaplan and Katie Koestner Editor: Craig Stanton Producer: Emily Wang
This week's reading was A Thousand and One Nights, also known as The Arabian Nights. The backstory (very, very briefly) was that a king, upon finding his queen to be unfaithful, executed her, and declared himself done with women, sort of. Every night, a new woman was brought to be his queen. Every morning he had his vizier execute the poor unfortunate girl. One day the vizier's own daughter Scheherazade asked to be married to the king. After many days of begging, the vizier finally gave in to the girl's request.Once in the king's bedchamber, her sister (it's kind of complicated) asked for a story. Scheherazade spun a tale but ended it at a cliffhanger. The king, wanting to hear the end of the story, decided to let her live and bring her back for a second night. With stories that included Sinbad, Ali Baba and Aladdin, Scheherazade lived a thousand and one (and more) nights. The actual stories are collected from around the 8th century until the 13th, from Persia and India predominantly. They were translated into English around the 17th century. I'd imagine that the exotic stories captivated European audiences! For me, the experience of reading the stories was similar to reading Grimm's Fairy Tales. The stories are fun, and very interesting—I loved some of them, especially the seven voyages of Sinbad. But when I say they didn't leave a mark, I just don't think I'll take a lot from this week's reading. I didn't find any of them to demonstrate particular lessons, to teach virtues or make some kind of grand statement about the human condition. They were really fun, and I will definitely keep this book around because it is terrific bedtime reading. That's not a terrible thing to say about a book.A year ago I read the wonderful Everything Sad is Untrue by Daniel Nayeri, about a little Iranian boy who emigrates to Oklahoma with his mom and brother. There are vignettes in which the author directly references these stories, related as a way for him to hold onto his Persian heritage. I do think I'll go back and reread that one, just because I really loved it and would like to be able to know it a little better. Now that I've read Arabian Nights, that should be easy.LINKDaniel Nayeri, author of Everything Sad is UntrueTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)CONNECTTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321 Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm

Your sister gave you permission to spank her son. Now she's calling you a child abuser and diving deep into conspiracy theories. Welcome to Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: You spanked your nephew once after he kicked your daughter, with your sister's prior permission. Now she's calling you a child abuser, your mother's caught in the middle, and there's a fascinating twist involving QAnon, church expulsions, and a high-profile abuse case. How does one find the way through this labyrinth of family dysfunction? Picture teaching 100 ESL students daily in a crowded hallway (yes, a hallway!) with no walls, while six precious years stand between you and a cushy pension. Your Etsy side hustle brings joy, but those morning tears on the commute tell a different story. What's the escape route from this educational pressure cooker? As a pastor and Army Reserve high-ranker, you counsel others through their darkest hours. But your 16-year-old daughter's bipolar diagnosis, self-harm history, and manipulative behaviors are testing your limits in ways no pastoral training could prepare you for. How do you help someone who refuses to be helped? Recommendation of the Week: Use AI in your everyday life. For 16 years, you lived in the shadow of narcissistic manipulation, watching your self-esteem erode like a sand castle in rising tide. Now that you've escaped, your ex-wife is spinning tales that would make Scheherazade blush, and you're left wondering: how do you rebuild your truth when someone else has been writing your story? You can send me a text if you have a comment or questionThis covers the 1799 campaigns in Italy and Switzerland and Suvorov's art of war. The title is a play on Clausewitz's work on the topic, and Clausewitz is a major source.Massena, Moreau, Joubert and Jourdan try to fight campaigns dominated by the presence of Suvorov the greatest Russian commander of all times.Suvorov dominates Italy, defeating three French armies in 3 major battles.Archduke Charles begins the campaign in Switzerland, defeating Jourdan, eventually driving him into retirement. But Massena is a more difficult opponent. The Aulic Council makes one of history's great unforced errors. Leaving Rimsky-Korsakov (no, not him, his father though) to face Massena alone. Scheherazade cannot save him.We end with some of Suvorov's writings on warfare, including excerpts from his: How to Win, an Address to Soldiers in their own Language.

As discussed in a previous episode, if a man is rich and attractive, he isn't going to be loyal – so this is the hardest man to lock down. That said, even movie stars and world leaders settle down – so it is possible to get them to commit. To do so, however, it is not enough for a woman to be attractive and inoffensive: she must captivate him emotionally, as well. By channeling her inner Scheherazade, a woman can weave a story that can enchant even the most recalcitrant rake. This is how to marry a rich, attractive man. Raymond Bisha's podcast spotlights two classic recordings in the Vox Audiophile Edition that were first released in the mid-1970s and feature two former music directors of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in their prime – Walter Susskind, who directs orchestral extracts from Smetana's opera The Bartered Bride, and Jerzy Semkow, who leads a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, one of the most popular suites in the entire orchestral canon.
This bedtime story is about One Thousand and One Nights (also known as "Arabian Nights"). I tell you several famous stories from this compilation of Middle Eastern and North African folk tales and legends. These include the framing story with Scheherazade and Shahryar, "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," "The Merchant and the Genie," "Sinbad the Sailor" and his seven voyages, and "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp." I also tell you a little bit about where this compilation of stories comes from. Welcome to Lights Out LibraryJoin me for a sleepy adventure tonight. This week on MYTH, we'll catch up with Scheherazade as she spins out another of her 1001 Nights. You'll see that sometimes complaining about rich people works, that you should always be careful when landing on weird islands, and that not all spirits actually do anything. Then, in Gods and Monsters, a gardener is going to get the runaround from a mischievous little bird. Source: Middle Eastern Folklore

Have you ever wondered...how to develop true confidence in yourself and your abilities amidst setbacks? What the right mindset is for auditions? How much of your expressive playing should be planned out, and how much is instinct? How to recover from very direct, critical audition feedback? And how do you stay in the present moment, instead of stressing out about nerves and all the bad things that could happen when you're on stage? If you've ever struggled with questions like this, I think you'll find helpful answers in today's episode with violinist Nathan Cole - who was recently appointed concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Nathan shares insights, details, and lessons learned from his 20-year concertmaster audition journey, and also demonstrates an exercise (using an excerpt from Brahms's 4th Symphony) that will help you form clearer musical intentions and play more expressively no matter what music you're working on - especially in passages where you're not quite sure what to do. Get a transcript, show notes, and all the other nerdy details at:Nathan Cole: Lessons From 20 Years of Concertmaster Auditions====You can connect with Nathan and get tons more insights, tips, and technical advice at:Web: natesviolin.comNathan will also be teaching a live, 4-day, guided (and free) practice workshop on the Scheherazade solos from September 19-22, 2024 (at 4pm Eastern). Whether you're aspiring to take concertmaster auditions yourself, or simply want to learn some of Nathan practice techniques and strategies for better intonation, sound, and expressive clarity that you can apply to other music that you're working on, this will be a great way to jumpstart your fall practice with some new tools.Sign up for Violin Hero: Scheherazade: https://natesviolin.ac-page.com/violin-hero-ncYou can also study with Nathan through his online group learning program - Daily Virtuoso - where each quarter, he leads an in-depth study of a new set of masterworks from the repertoire. You'll learn how to approach both the technical and musical challenges in each piece through live calls, practice assignments, and video lessons, alongside a supportive community of fellow learners.Join Daily Virtuoso: https://natesviolin.com/daily-virtuoso/* * *BTW, have you ever wondered why it is exactly that things often sound better at home than they do on stage? If you've been confused (and frustrated) by the inconsistency of your performances, I put together a FREE 4-minute quiz called the Mental Skills Audit, which will help you pinpoint your mental strengths and weaknesses, and figure out what exactly to adjust and tweak in your preparation for more consistently optimal performances. It's 100% free, takes only 4 minutes, and you'll get a downloadable PDF with a personalized breakdown of where you stand in six key mental skill areas. You'll also get the Pressure Proof Practice Challenge, a free 1-week email course where you'll learn specific practice strategies that will help you perform your best, even under pressure. [School of Everything Else 2024] This was a commissioned show for Self AKA Selfproclaimed. Ever since The Legend of Aang wrapped in 2008 there have been comics expanding upon what followed the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai. This, however, was a pair of books; 'The Rise of Kyoshi' and 'The Shadow of Kyoshi' detailing what occurred four centuries prior to the adventures of Team Aang. And the 2019-2020 release of these two novels, penned by F.C. Yee with consultancy from co-creator of Avatar Michael Dante DiMartino was met with wild adulation. Both books have astronomical five star reviews on Amazon, with more than 9K ratings corroborating that. What I personally got from the books was a lot more of a mixed bag. There is amazing potential here, however, not all of it was fulfilled. Luckily we also have longtime friend of the show Nama Chibitty on, to counterpoint my hang-ups. And this episode launches on the same day as School of Movies unveils the second in our series of short story anthologies, written by members of the community. 'Shared Footprints on Crossed Pathways' is the follow-up to 'The Lights from Distant Bonfires' in 2022. This collection sees legendary public domain characters like Sherlock Holmes, Winnie the Pooh, Zorro, The Phantom of the Opera, Captain Nemo, Cthulhu, Minnie Mouse, Don Quixote, Scheherazade, Tarzan and King Kong meeting up and examining one another's worldviews. Each story given a beautiful illustration by Nama's sister Bunny Boughamer. The paperback is available here
