Episode 204: Understanding Constitutional Prescribing with Madhavi Naik

Welcome back to the Homeopathy247 podcast! In Episode 204, Mary Greensmith sits down with the brilliant homeopath Madhavi Naik to demystify one of the most common—and often misunderstood—terms in holistic health: constitutional prescribing. If you have ever wondered why homeopaths ask such detailed questions about your personality, sleep habits, and food cravings, this episode will clear it all up! What is Constitutional Prescribing? When you visit a conventional doctor, the focus is usually on your specific physical complaint (like a headache or a cough). Homeopathy works beautifully in reverse! Madhavi explains that a constitutional prescription looks at the totality of your symptoms, prioritizing them in a specific hierarchy: Mental Generals: Your emotional state, intellect, and memory. This is the most important layer! Physical Generals: How your body interacts with the environment. Do you run hot or cold? What are your sleep patterns, energy levels, and food cravings? Physical Particulars: Your chief complaint (the main reason you sought help). By looking at the complete picture, a homeopath finds a remedy that matches your current, unique state of being. Layers of Healing and Evolving States Madhavi highlights that nobody is locked into a single "remedy personality" for life. We are constantly evolving, and so are our remedy needs! She shares a great case of a 50-year-old caregiver who needed Arnica for physical soreness, Bryonia for an acute allergy cough, and finally Sepia to address the deeper, constitutional layer of caregiver overwhelm and insomnia. Obstacles to Cure A homeopathic remedy cannot override a physical obstacle. Madhavi shares a funny personal story from her days as a medical student: she took Staphysagria for severe eye pain, only to realize two days later that she simply had a stray eyelash trapped against her cornea! Homeopathy works with your body, but maintaining causes—like poor nutrition, environmental toxins, or physical irritants—must be addressed for true healing to take place. We've wanted to have this week's guest on since we started the podcast. Andrew Zimmerman is one of Chicago's most respected chefs -- a five-time James Beard finalist and the chef behind Sepia's remarkable 15-year Michelin star run. In a special episode, we hosted the Gratuity Round live during a dinner at the Stock headquarters featuring Andrew and Jonathan Zaragoza before sitting down with Andrew a few days later to talk about his journey from New Jersey kitchens and punk bands to becoming one of the defining culinary voices in Chicago. This week, we talk: American cuisine and cultural influence, the realities of consistency at the Michelin level, wild restaurant stories involving retirement homes and alleged mobsters, and why hospitality is ultimately about building something worth coming back to -- and so much more.

We're pulling the curtain back on what actually drives “morning” sickness—and how to find real relief with safe homeopathy, steady nutrition, and smart daily habits that work in the real world. From hormonal surges to blood sugar swings after a long night's fast, we map the common traps and the simple moves that flip the script. We walk through a clear, symptom-matching guide to top remedies. Nux vomica fits the irritable, smell-sensitive mornings; Ipecac helps when vomiting doesn't ease the nausea; Cocculus shines for exhaustion-induced queasiness; Pulsatilla supports the tender, weepy moments in need of fresh air; Phosphorus matches the ice-cold drink cravings with quick regurgitation; Colchicum targets overpowering cooking odors; Symphoricarpus offers relief for hyperemesis when motion worsens everything; and Sepia, used with professional guidance, addresses deeper hormonal overwhelm. Alongside remedies, we share practical strategies: protein first and often, pairing with complex carbs to stabilize blood sugar, nightstand snacks to prevent that dawn crash, ginger support, cautious peppermint use, and replenishing B6, magnesium, and electrolytes. You'll also hear when to escalate care. If fluids won't stay down, weight is dropping, dizziness spikes, or urine turns dark, it's time for IV hydration and targeted help. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1235/29?v=20251111

Amaranthia is a 26-year-old Black, disabled, neurodivergent artist and organizer based in New Hampshire, and in this conversation we get to really dig into her story, not only as a creative behind Sista Creatives Rising, but as an artist whose work is rooted in her family's gardening history, her love of Black women and the land, and her own hard-won journey toward self-preservation and community. We talk about her stunning seed packet illustrations for Sistah Seeds, founded by Amirah Mitchell. Together, we are part of a multi-ethnic, multi-national movement of farmers and seed-keepers, working to preserve our heritage and create a strong agricultural future for our communities."We also talk about hydroponics, healing, and how growing food for her mom during a health crisis sparked something lasting. We talk about Amaranthia's new role at Down to the Struts, how an unexpected $3,000 Social Security notice lit a fire under her to pursue additional work, and why remote, disability-justice-rooted employment is the difference between thriving and burning out.We also discuss what it's meant to find a vibrant disabled community online after years of navigating bullying, racism, misogynoir, and ableism...including the assumption that being homebound automatically means your life is sad and small. Episode Description: In this inspiring episode of the Homeopathy247 podcast, host Mary sits down with homeopath Joanna Mikhail to discuss the deep connection between fear, anxiety, and our body's innate ability to heal. Joanna shares insights from her upcoming e-book, Trust Your Body: Remembering How to Heal, and explains how homeopathy helps us shift out of a fear-based state. The Root of Anxiety: A Fear-Based Life When clients come to Joanna for panic attacks or anxiety, they rarely connect their symptoms to "fear". However, anxiety is fundamentally "fear-based living"—a state where we lose trust in our body's resilience and forget that we live in a time of abundance. Joanna emphasizes a core homeopathic philosophy: You are not broken, you are not sick, and you do not need to be fixed. Symptoms are simply communication tools. By listening to them instead of suppressing them, we can figure out what the body is trying to tell us. Differentiating Remedies for Anxiety Many people ask how a homeopath chooses the right remedy when so many (like Phosphorus, Sepia, Nux Vomica, and Arsenicum) cover symptoms like "anxiety about trifles". Homeopaths look at modalities—what makes you feel better or worse. They will ask questions like: Are you thirsty or thirstless? Do you crave salty foods (like Nat Mur) or sweet foods (like Sepia)? Do you freeze, pace the floor, or become talkative when panicked? Do you crave control (like Arsenicum arranging deck chairs on the Titanic), or do you flop and yield to the storm (like Pulsatilla)? The Power of Intuition and Observation Joanna notes that "intuition" literally means "inner teacher". Homeopathy encourages clients to act like scientists observing their own bodies. The remedy does not "cure" the symptom; it acts as a catalyst, like tuning a piano, giving your vital force the extra energy it needs to heal itself. As Joanna reminds us, many struggles are just "stages." Homeopathy provides the energetic boost needed so we do not get stuck in them. In this episode of the Homeopathy247 podcast, Mary welcomes back the radiant Felicity Gray. They dive into the sensitive and highly requested topic of fertility, exploring how homeopathy can be a game-changer for couples struggling to conceive naturally or preparing for IVF treatments. Preparing the Body: The 3-to-4 Month Window Conventional doctors often advise couples to try conceiving for a year before seeking medical intervention. Felicity suggests using this crucial time—or at least 3 to 4 months prior to trying or starting IVF—to work with a homeopath. During this window, homeopathy helps to: Detox the Liver: Clear out old toxins, including residual effects from years of taking the contraceptive pill. Balance Hormones: Naturally regulate estrogen and progesterone to improve cycle health and uterine lining thickness. Improve Egg & Sperm Quality: Both partners should be treated to ensure the healthiest possible genetic material. Can Homeopathy Be Used Alongside IVF? Absolutely! Felicity emphasizes that homeopathy is perfectly safe to use alongside prescribed IVF medications. IVF is a grueling process that involves intense hormonal deregulation and stimulation. Homeopathy provides critical support during the IVF cycle by: Managing Hormonal Rollercoasters: Easing the extreme emotional highs of estrogen stimulation and the crashing lows or "PMS-like" symptoms that follow egg retrieval. Healing Physical Trauma: Remedies like Arnica or Bellis Perennis help the ovaries and abdomen recover from the physical trauma of egg harvesting (which can involve multiple punctures). Creating a "Cozy Living Room": Relaxing the uterus to create the best possible environment for embryo implantation. Addressing Secondary Infertility and PCOS Felicity also touches on specific fertility hurdles: PCOS: Homeopathy can help balance androgens and estrogens. For women with PCOS going into IVF, this balance can prevent the dangerous over-production of poor-quality eggs (sometimes up to 30 at once), focusing the body's energy on producing a few high-quality eggs instead. Secondary Infertility: Often, women struggle to conceive their second child simply because their vital force is depleted. Lack of sleep and constant exposure to nursery viruses leave mothers exhausted. Remedies like Sepia can help restore the immune system and energy levels. The week before bleeding can feel like someone swapped your glasses for a funhouse mirror: small annoyances turn seismic, cravings roar, and sleep slips away. We're unpacking that shift, showing how PMS patterns point to specific solutions, and sharing what actually steadies the luteal phase so you feel like yourself again. We start by reframing symptoms as useful signals. Irritability, tears, heat, bloat, headaches, insomnia—each detail helps identify the drivers: estrogen dominance, low progesterone, cortisol overload, sluggish gut detox, blood sugar swings, even thyroid drag. From there, we match patterns to precise homeopathic options. Sepia supports the overburdened, snappy, “leave me alone, but don't leave” state. Pulsatilla fits gentle weepiness that craves comfort and fresh air. Lachesis targets hot, intense anger that lifts once bleeding begins. Nat mur aids the one who holds pain in and hates consolation. Calc carb steadies the overwhelmed and exhausted. Mag phos eases cramps that melt with warmth, while Nux vomica resets the overworked, overcaffeinated short fuse.Remedies land best alongside smart habits. Magnesium glycinate smooths sleep and muscle tension. Protein-rich breakfasts anchor blood sugar. Cutting back on sugar and caffeine tempers jitters and mood swings. Gentle movement—walks, Pilates, light rebounding—lowers stress without spiking cortisol. To support estrogen clearance, we lean on dandelion and milk thistle, add fiber, and hydrate well. If rage or despair feel extreme, periods run very heavy, or thyroid symptoms stack up, labs can clarify your next move and pair well with personalized care.PMS doesn't define you; it's your hormones asking for help. Episode Description: In this episode of Homeopathy 247, we're joined by Joanna Mikhail, a homeopath with a special interest in sleep. Joanna shares how her own experience with chronic insomnia and anxiety led her to homeopathy—and why she now feels so passionate about helping others who are exhausted, overwhelmed, and simply desperate for rest. Why sleep problems often start "before" the sleep Many people reach out because they can't sleep, but Joanna explains that poor sleep is often a signal rather than the main problem. When she begins working with someone, she gently explores what happened first—such as stress, grief, trauma, hormone changes, or physical imbalances (like low iron). Sleep issues can be the consequence of the body and mind struggling to cope. Why sleep affects everything Joanna and the host highlight how sleep impacts your whole day: energy, mood, resilience, and even your ability to make decisions. When you're not sleeping, it's harder for your body to settle into a "rest and restore" state. Over time, the effects can build—because as they put it, sleep breeds sleep, and poor sleep can spiral. Looking at the full picture (not just symptoms) Joanna explains that homeopathy looks at the whole symptom picture. That can include: Your health history (even childhood sleep patterns) Night terrors or sleepwalking (especially in children) The time you wake up (for example, waking between 1–3am) Your sleep position, temperature, and how you feel when you wake Recurring dreams and themes that show up at night These details help a homeopath understand what your system is expressing—rather than forcing sleep in a one-size-fits-all way. Children, night terrors, and the ripple effect at home Children's sleep issues affect the whole household. Joanna talks about night terrors and how exploring family history can sometimes reveal patterns of stress, trauma, or inherited tendencies. The goal isn't just "stop the night terrors"—it's to help the child settle, thrive, and feel supported so the whole family can enjoy happier nights and better days. Acute support and long-term healing Even when sleep problems are chronic, Joanna shares that an acute remedy may sometimes be used to help someone get relief tonight—because sleep deprivation is hard to live with. Longer-term support focuses on addressing the underlying causes and strengthening the person overall, rather than "knocking you out." Medication, lifestyle tips, and meeting people where they are Joanna explains that homeopathy can be used alongside medication, because it works differently. She also shares a compassionate approach to lifestyle advice: if someone is already frazzled, piling on strict rules can add pressure. Homeopathy, she says, can meet you where you are—and as you improve, healthier habits often feel more possible. A real-life win: new mum, better sleep, more joy Joanna shares a lovely case story of a new mum who couldn't sleep even when her baby was sleeping. With support (including Sepia for hormonal imbalance), she not only rested again—she felt like herself, reconnected with joy, and described becoming "the mum I was born to be." This leads us into a deeper conversation about menopause as a sacred transition rather than a medical event - one that women can move through with grace, strength, and even joy.The episode unveils five powerful homeopathic remedies tailored to specific menopause experiences: Lachesis for the woman with intense hot flashes and emotional overflow; Sepia for the worn-out caregiver who's lost her spark; Sulfur for the intellectual with "fire in her veins"; Pulsatilla for the gentle soul craving connection; and Graphites for the sensitive woman feeling stuck in body and emotions. You'll learn how to match these remedies to your unique symptom picture and dosing strategies that can bring relief.Beyond homeopathy, we discuss nutrition for hormone balancing, movement practices, sleep hygiene, nervous system support, and spiritual anchoring during this transformative phase. This isn't just about managing symptoms—it's about embracing what Melissa calls "the second spring of womanhood."Ready to transform your menopause journey? In this friendly episode of Homeopathy 247, Mary chats with Isobel Fothergill about the much-used Pulsatilla—a polycrest that often helps when emotions, reassurance, and “changeable” symptoms are front and center. Isobel shows how homeopathy looks at the person behind the symptoms, weaving together personality, triggers, and physical signs to find a good match. How to Recognise a “Pulsatilla” Person Pulsatilla often suits gentle, shy, affectionate people who like company and reassurance. Children may cling at the school gate; adults feel better with a hand to hold. They love fresh air and often feel worse in warm, stuffy rooms. In homoeopathy, these character cues can be as important as physical symptoms. Key Physical Clues Isobel highlights several pointers: Thick yellow-green mucus in colds, coughs, or sinusitis Recurring earaches in childhood Eye issues such as styes, red/itchy eyes, and hay fever with eye symptoms Chilliness, especially hands and fingers, yet a strong desire to be outdoors Changeability: symptoms shift location, timing, or intensity Pulsatilla is also useful during life transitions—starting school, puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause—when bodies and emotions are in flux. Emotional Themes (and a Quick Contrast) Pulsatilla people are tender and easily moved to tears, but can be quickly cheered up. They may “people-please” to get comfort and attention—not in a harsh way, but from a real need to feel supported. Compared with more independent types (like Sepia), Pulsatilla prefers closeness, care, and community. This is where homoeopathy can feel very personal. Two Short Case Stories Teen with ongoing nausea after bad meat: needed reassurance, felt better in open air, had a forehead headache. A higher potency Pulsatilla briefly intensified symptoms, then the nausea resolved. Woman with variable hot flushes: night sweats, tearfulness pre-period, and a strong need for support. A low daily potency reduced frequency and intensity and improved mood. Why “Changeable” Matters If your symptoms are inconsistent—time, place, sensation—don't ignore it. In homeopathy, changeability itself is a guiding clue that can point to Pulsatilla over other remedies. Practical Pointers Potency depends on the picture: higher for clear emotional matches; lower, more frequent doses for longer-running physical issues. When in doubt—especially for chronic concerns—consult a professional. Sepia Jewel was no stranger to the stage before her burlesque life! Singing in an all female rap group signed onto Epic Records and designing costumes while dancing for the San Diego Ebony Elite's are just a few items on her resumé (include mother, daughter, wife, and friend). It wasn't until 2016, Ms. Jewel was watching the movie Burlesque that she realized she needed to get back to the stage.  At 55 years old, she trained under Coco L'Amour with the Pixie Stixx and from there, the force she possesses couldn't be stopped. Quickly becoming an award winning international showgirl, she soon realized the rhinestone life was aligned with the art therapy she was looking for.  9 years later, Sepia Jewel shows us what it means to be a Black burlesque performer and queen: no age, no location, no *nothing* can stop you.

Comiendo con María (Nutrición)

Dr. William Turner and Dr. Ted Olson talk to Geonoah Davis and Kelly Thompson, two artists whose hip-hop sounds are expanding traditional ideas about music in Appalachia. Borrowing from a generations-old African American heritage of spoken word expression, rap and hip-hop echo a long narrative tradition of African American cultural survival against all odds. These original historical elements are deeply rooted in the fabric of Appalachia, blending into the backdrop of the region's musical character yet revived and brought forward again by these fresh creative talents with their contemporary styles.Geonoah Davis, known by the artistic name geonovah, was born and raised in Big Stone Gap, VA, in the heart of Appalachia's coal and iron industry. He wasn't the first rapper in his family, and early collaborations with his cousin RKMITCH allowed him to develop his powers of poetry into an artistry for hip-hop lyric and verse. Kelly Thompson, a.k.a Pookie, also hails from Big Stone Gap but spent his early childhood in North Carolina. Friends since middle school, he and Geonoah have made music together for many years—Kelly creating beats and Geonoah writing lyrics. Kelly evolved his talents to include music production, learning from local producers in his area.Dr. William Turner is a long-time African American studies scholar and retired Distinguished Professor of Appalachian Studies and Regional Ambassador from Berea College. He was also a research assistant to Roots author Alex Haley and co-editor of the groundbreaking Blacks in Appalachia. In 2021, Turner received Western Carolina University's individual Mountain Heritage Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Southern Appalachian studies. His memoir called The Harlan Renaissance, available from West Virginia University Press, was awarded the prestigious Weatherford Award at the 2022 Appalachian Studies Association Conference.Dr. Ted Olson is a music historian and professor of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University. He is the author of many books, articles, reviews, encyclopedia entries, and oral histories. Olson has produced and compiled a number of documentary albums of traditional Appalachian music including On Top of Old Smoky and Big Bend Killing, both from Smokies Life. His work has received a number of awards, including nine Grammy nominations. The East Tennessee Historical Society honored Olson with its Ramsey Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021.Music featured includes:1.    “John Henry” performed by Amythyst Kiah and Roy Andrade from GSMA's (now Smokies Life's) album Big Bend Killing2.    “Takin' Me Over” performed by geonovah for the album No Options: Hip-Hop in Appalachia, used courtesy of June Appal Recordings3.    “S&S” performed by geonovah for the album No Options: Hip-Hop in Appalachia, used courtesy of June Appal Recordings4.    “Black Lives Never Mattered” by RKMITCH featuring geonovah, vocals mixed by Pookie

Dr. Ege discusses Price's musical style, her significance in American classical music, and the recent rediscovery of her compositions. The conversation covers Price's role in the Chicago music scene, her blending of classical and African American musical traditions, and the challenges she faced as a Black female composer in the early 20th century. Dr. Ege also shares insights from her own recordings of Price's piano works and her upcoming scholarly publications on the composer.   Dr. Samantha Ege is a leading scholar and interpreter of the African American composer Florence Price.  Her work illuminates Price in the context of the Black Chicago Renaissance and Black women's dynamic networks of advocacy, empowerment, and uplift. Her first book, South Side Impresarios: How Race Women Transformed Chicago's Classical Music Scene, and first edited collection, The Cambridge Companion to Florence B. Price, are important culminations of the research she has shared around the world.   Dr Ege is a also concert pianist who specializes in the music of 20th and 21st century composers. Her performances bring her research to life, sounding new narratives that are so often unheard in the modern-day concert hall. Dr Ege seeks to communicate the diversity of classical music's past, present, and future through her performances, and foster a sense of belonging for everyone.   In her London debut at the 2021 London Festival of American Music she gave the world premiere of Florence Price's complete Fantasie Nègre set. In 2018, she made her international lecture-recitalist debut at the Chicago Symphony Center with her event A Celebration of Women in Music: Composing the Black Chicago Renaissance. You guys welcome to the high-performance tip number 189. Of our podcast. And today I want to feature Janice Bryant. Howroyd Janice is one of the most inspirational people that I've interviewed out of 500 people.  And what's really amazing about her is that, like I mentioned, she started in a segregated south born in 1952, where there was white people on one side of the neighborhood and black people on the other side of the neighborhood and she was born one of 11 kids in extreme poverty.  Nevertheless, she still made her way to found and build a billion dollar company. And not only that, she was the first black woman to build a billion dollar company.  She stands at the top of the list as the 38th richest woman in the world, and, she talks specifically in this episode, how she gained an abundance mindset and how her family, her parents taught her to have an abundance mindset and to dream. Even though she's in an extremely racist and suppressive environment during her youth for the first 24 years of her life. Let's hop into it with Janice Bryant.  Howroyd.  Janice: I was born in 1952 One of 11 kids, the fourth of 11 kids, same mom, same dad in Tarboro, North Carolina. , , so that can tell you a lot about just what was happening in my community at that time  we were a segregated community, Um, , we were segregated in many ways, not just racially, but racial segregation. offered the segregation of economics and I'm glad you said we were economically poor because we were spiritually rich, quite wealthy if you think of it, and aspirationally we were full. Mom and dad wanted for us the world that they dreamed was possible, but they didn't put boundaries on us about how that could be achieved, meaning they didn't want us to only do the things they thought we should do. Nobody had to be a doctor or lawyer, you know, a candlestick butcher, a baker, a candlestick maker. But they did insist that education would be a platform for that. That was the hard hitting thing in my home growing up. And I never saw anybody outside of a teacher or a preacher who held a professional job who was African American unless I got pictures and stories of them from old print magazines. , there was Essence. Ebony. Essence came later. There was Ebony. There was Sepia. And are you, are you familiar with the Georges? , the family? No, no, no. The Georges were, were the, , porters along trains. Along the rail tracks that ran from south to north on the east coast. And rather than bother to learn John or Fred or Joseph's name, everyone was called George or boy. Okay. Okay. Wow. The George is my, my grandfather was a George. Okay. He hated it. His name was Daniel. He worked that line for many years. And nobody knew his name. , and so, they would bring products and, and, and, , items to us that we couldn't get locally. So nobody was selling black magazines in Tarboro, North Carolina. Black focused magazines. So we'd get Ebony, Jet. Sepia delivered by the George's and everybody waited for the train to come in on the day that the magazines would come and that's where I started to get ideas about the possibility of what a black person could do And a black woman could do . We weren't seeing black people on TV. And that was so big for us. We'd all rush home. What does that got to do with the way I grew up? Everything I grew up with a full faith in what America is and what the world is like, and, um, and could be for me and that I had a place to shape it despite what was going on day to day. And that was the power. And I think the faith that our mom and dad put in front of us,    [00:04:54] Chris : There you haven't you guys, what do you think? Hearing stories like that make our difficulties in 2024 seem incredibly small. And irrelevant. And I would imagine very few listening to the podcast grew up in an environment that has equal or worse than Janice's, but nonetheless hearing a story like that really makes us think that anything is possible. Not only any, not only is anything possible, but, what is important. Is that we focus on the positive side of life. And we surrender to our dreams . And go after them with everything that we have. So, leaving you with that. I want to ask you.  What did you take away from Janice's story? It's a powerful one. If you haven't heard Janice's full episode, I recommend you checking it out. I believe it's episode number 544. , interviewing the 38th richest woman in the world. Janice Bryant. Howroyd. 347 - Business Lessons We Can Learn from the Sepia Bride with Photographer Emily Kim

On today's episode of the podcast I'm joined by brand photographer, videographer and educator Emily Kim to discuss business best practices, process, contracts and communication we can learn from the sepia bride. I took an informal poll online and the general consensus is that people are pretty over this topic, but we're using it as a brief example to discuss some overall lessons learned so if you're over the sepia bride, stay with us for a moment. If you aren't familiar with the sepia bride conversation, a bride hired a photographer, got the photos back and wasn't too happy with them when she noticed the editing didn't reflect the style she'd seen in the photographer's portfolio. She asked for the raw photos from the photographer, who made a good faith effort to re-edit the photos for her and it didn't end up working out. The bride posted a series of videos on social media about the situation that divided people between Team Bride and Team Photographer. To start, Emily and I discuss photo editing. She gives a hot take that she disagrees with the majority of photographers when it comes to editing vs. the client experience. Emily says there's merit and validity to saying you hire a photographer whose editing and style you like but that the issue arises when photographers value their artwork more than the client experience. If your client isn't happy, did you really do a good job? When Emily was new into photography and hadn't honed her editing skills, she used a preset for a long time with no issues until a client asked her to reedit the photos to be true to color but Emily recognized at the end of the day she was wrong because the client was selling clothes, not Emily's artwork, so the client's preference is what matters. Emily thinks it is part of the photographer's responsibility to talk with the potential client to see what style of photography they're looking for and if you're a fit or should refer them out. To help with this, Emily asks clients to create a mood board. Emily says she thinks she is in the minority when it comes to considering herself a business person first and a photographer second. She wants to be the kind of photographer who can match what people bring her, so she's worked over the years on understanding different editing and lighting styles to better serve an array of clients. Emily asks if you are forfeiting your copyright and no longer have the rights to these photos as the photographer if you give the client the raw files. My general legal instinct is that you own the copyright and everything you produce. In the contract you always want to specify what kind of license you want to give people. Within copyright, there are six different sub-rights, like the right to make a derivative work, and when you address copyright in your contract you want to address which copyrights you are licensing or assigning to the person. If you send over raw files to your client, you can send them an additional contract to go with them saying that this does not transfer any additional copyrights to the client. Emily and I chat about our hot takes and feelings on clients adding filters to your photos when they post them online (it's okay if they do, we can see that your work doesn't look like that if we click over to your profile and maybe the client just likes their Instagram aesthetic a certain way). When it comes to best practices in contracts in regards to the sepia bride situation, there was some beef online about how long the photo gallery was available. Emily would recommend putting in your contract how long they will have access to the gallery online and that if they would like to purchase cloud storage from you, you can keep it up longer for them. If they come back looking for them later, you can be generous with a bit of an extension and then charge them an unarchival fee to bring them back beyond that. Also in your contract, you'll want to include an artistic style release which is a simple paragraph that states that the client has looked at a representative sample of the photographer's work and understands that the photos will be shot and edited in a similar style. Emily tells her clients before they book is that she includes five advanced edits (using Photoshop to extend background, smooth skin, etc.). Some people use all, some use none. If they have additional requests, Emily charges per image. Anything you would charge additional money for should be addressed in your contract. The easiest to say is if you have any additional requests that have not been considered under this agreement, you can email and ask for a quote for that. This will give you freedom and flexibility on things like additional edits or selling your raw images if you choose to. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, the 97-year-old Pittsburgh-based artist and sculptor Thaddeus Mosley has a deep and enduring obsession with wood. In his late 20s, he began to use the material for art, carving sculptures in his basement studio, and with his sculpture-making now spanning 70 years, his enduring dedication to his craft is practically unparalleled. Represented by Karma gallery since 2019, Mosley has only now, in the past decade or so, begun to receive the international recognition and attention he has long deserved. In his hands, wood sings; he shapes and carves trees into striking abstract forms that often appear as if they're levitating while honoring and preserving their organic, natural character. As with the work of his two main influences, Constantin Brâncuși and Isamu Noguchi, Mosley, too, strives to make sculptures that, in his words, beyond today, “will be interesting in a hundred tomorrows.”On the episode, he talks about the language that poetry, music, and sculpture all share; his early years as a sports writer for a local newspaper; and his life-transforming relationship with the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.Special thanks to our Season 9 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Thaddeus Mosley[4:13] Sam Gilliam[17:24] Carnegie Museum[21:08] Carnegie International[21:08] Leon Arkus[21:08] “Thaddeus Mosley: Forest”[21:08] “Inheritance”[24:20] Isamu Noguchi[27:53] Constantin Brâncuși[28:28] University of Pittsburgh[28:28] Martha Graham[46:15] Floyd Bennett Field[46:23] Ebony magazine[46:23] Sepia magazine[46:23] Jet magazine[46:23] Pittsburgh Courier[54:34] John Coltrane[51:37] Li Bo[51:37] Dylan Thomas[56:21] Bernard Leach[57:45] Langston Hughes[57:45] Countee Cullen[57:45] Harriet Tubman[57:45] Fannie Lou Hamer[57:45] “The Long-Legged Bait”[57:45] “Air Step - for Fayard and Harold Nicholas”[57:45] The Nicholas Brothers
