A weekly recap show covering Yu-Gi-Oh!, the best early-00's anime based on a card game marketed to 7-to-14-year-olds.
Greetings, duelists! As you might guess from the title, we're putting the show on an indefinite hiatus. Our goal has always been to make the show for fun, and recently felt it slipping closer and closer into "obligation" territory, so we're taking a step back for a little bit to figure out how to make it fun again. Until next time, take care of yourselves and each other, and keep dueling the good duel!
It’s a dark night in a city that knows its way around a duel. One forbidden monster and his two disembodied arms need money fast. What follows is the thrilling (?) end to the first half of ENTER THE TASK DUNGEON.Also, this week Jimmy and Tyler discuss two bonkers episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh, the ascension of Noah’s Ark, and the birth of that one Joey meme.
It’s the new year, and we’re back with a new episode! Join us to learn about who we’re blocking from Jimmy Wins 4, gasp at the trilling saga of Shaka the Orc, and swoon with us at the handsome visage of BLUE EYES WHITE TRAIN.BLUE. EYES. WHITE. TRAIN. Later on, High Commissioner Lauren joins us for a Task Dungeon task that blows up in our faces!
A Merry Duelmas to all, and to all a good… switch? This week, we watched the Netflix original movie The Princess Switch, starring Vanessa Hudgens AND Vanessa Hudgens! Join us as we wander through the impenetrable labyrinth posed by the movie’s disparate scenes, demand justice for Hot Kevin, struggle to remember anything that happened mere moments ago, and dive deeper still into THE HUDGENSVERSE!
On the twelfth day of Duelmas, Noah Kaiba gave to me:Twelve monsters fighting,Eleven dragons flying,Ten traps a-trapping,Nine harpie ladies,Eight dark magicians,Seven millennium items,Six spells a-casting,AND HE KIIIIIIIIILLED THE BIG FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!A merry Duelmas to all, as we reach the end of a particular gruesome era of Yu-Gi-Oh, and descend into what I’m told is about to be even more bonkers. Later, we make some holiday treats with the High Commissioner!
You know, of all the body-snatching movies out there, very few of them focus on what happens when multiple people snatch the same body, then need to play a card game against children. If nothing else, I’m so glad that Yu-Gi-Oh could bring this clearly underserved story to the masses…Ah, who am I kidding, this episode blows chunks. Join Jimmy and Tyler for a discussion of the first two parts of “Merger of the Big 5”, two episodes that nearly made Tyler sick, and continue to disappoint Jimmy to his very core. Will we ever figure out who exactly Noah is? What are the actual rules around Deck Masters? Why aren’t Tea, Duke, and Serenity doing anything useful???Later, High Commissioner Lauren joins us for a business lesson like no other!
It’s Turkey Day, and a lot of you are probably finding creative ways to safely spend it around loved ones. We wanted to bring you this weird, silly episode as an excuse to put in headphones for a while, and focus on yourself. You earned it! Don’t worry, your Dad and your Duncle said it was OK.
As we venture further into the cyberverse with Yugi and the gang, Tyler unveils Jimmy Wins 4, an online game for everyone! Then, join us as we discuss baby noises, Noah’s revelations, Kaiba’s Goodfellas impressions, and all the ways in which Mokuba is like a small bird. Later, High Commissioner Lauren joins us for a short celebration, and a body-snatching task with a shocking twist!
We’re back, and Tyler spins a plotz-worthy tale of woe before we jump into an episode all about this great big (virtual) world of ours. Well, it’s about that and family, but the important part is that moment where we reenact the entire plot of Gravity but replace Sandra Bullock with Blue Eyes White Dragon. Later, High Commissioner Lauren joins us for a high fantasy task dungeon quest! What’s a little pretend regicide between friends?
Happy Halloween! I think I’ve edited most of the curse out of this episode, but your mileage may vary. It took three wireless networks, one of our computers completely rebooting, and a blood sacrifice to record this one, so that’s how my week’s gone! Join us as we go to the opera, explore a yep-that’s-deffo-haunted “house”, and finally dig into our favorite episode so far this season.Later, High Commissioner Lauren joins us for a Task Dungeon that sees our monsters sparking joy and tidying up what might be an actual dungeon.
Gadzooks! The devilish Nesbitt has transformed himself into some kind of platonic ideal of a robot, and these youths must vanquish him!Join us on our adventures backwards and forwards over the last century, ranging from the bygone era of radio, to a futuristic duel over a vat of acid (which somehow includes Joan of Arc?), and back again to the Oregon Trail.
Wowsers trousers, folks. It sure is weird when a villain in this show is actually competent! Join us for the introduction of Nesbitt, everyone’s favorite Robotic Knight with a pit of acid, and Serenity’s first duel! Then, High Commissioner Lauren joins us for the introduction of the world’s most terrifying dog groomer. Also, as promised, here is the first draft of “The Heart of the Cards”, a tabletop-role-playing game based on Yu-Gi-Oh!
This episode, we leave nothing to chance, and bring only the most egregious of tangents for your ear-holes to enjoy. We discuss LEGO card games (?), Johnson’s Matrix-Hacking, and Joey’s infuriating insistence on flipping other people’s coins.Later, High Commissioner Lauren joins us to talk about helping friends move!
Eagle-eyed listeners will notice that, yes, you can sing this week’s episode title to the tune of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song! This week, we revel in a reprieve from the icy injustices of Crump’s imbecilic invention, and join Joseph in a judicial jaunt of japes and jabs. Johnson’s courtroom climbs towards crippling crescendo as the cards create a cunning cascade of calculated capriciousness. Can Joey defeat Johnson’s dastardly deeds? Find out next time! All alliterations aside, we have a fun episode, and end with High Commissioner Lauren challenging us to a Eurovision showdown.
Hey friends, Tyler here.
Okay, this one got away from us a bit. Eventually, we discuss this very cool (get it?) duel between Tea and the Creepiest Penguin Alive, but first we spend a lot of time talking about… a fish pyramid in Memphis.Later, High Commissioner Lauren challenges us to a task that may become its own spin-off! Can Bowganian and Gradius sneak back into their houses after a high school party, without waking up their parents? Check out the Task Dungeon tasks here!
It’s been a long week! There’s no other way to say it. Join us for a sleepy romp through the end of the “Isolated in Cyberspace” three-parter, where we discuss the divinity of Yugis, how hard or light hardlight holograms can be, and why this episode has a penguin in it.Later, High Commission Lauren presents us with a challenge sent in by The Mayor of Scimmy City: The Architect, listener Scimmy! Check out the Task Dungeon tasks here!
This week, we join the dueling workforce and discuss Season 3, episodes 2 and 3: “Isolated in Cyber Space: Parts 1 and 2”! Join us for a bit of Kaiba Bros. Backstory, patented Gansley Business Nonsense, and many shots of Tea, Tristan, Joey, Duke, and Serenity doing… not much.Later, Lauren joins us for the first installment of You Activated My Podcast! Season 3: YU-GI-OR-NOT?! Season 2: Enter the Task Dungeon!
That’s right, we’re back into Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters with the first episode of season 3: “A Virtual Nightmare”! I can’t wait to see who wins the Battle City finals — oh, we’re not doing that? What are we doing instead? A floating what? Virtual what? Big what?Later, Dungeon Commissioner Lauren joins us to reveal the sequel to Yu-Gi-Or-Not!: “You Activated My Podcast! Season 3: Yu-Gi-Or-Not! Season 2: Enter the Task Dungeon”! Jimmy and Tyler draft their first round of season 3 monsters.
We scoured the deepest depths of the internet to watch this episode of Zatch Bell! so you don’t have to!
This week, we talk about the adorable and divisive Dragon Pilot! You can watch Dragon Pilot on Netflix. Also, Tyler talks a lot about the role of gender in the show, and it should be noted that he does so from the perspective of a straight white dude. A well-intentioned straight white dude, but still. For more perspectives on feminism in Dragon Pilot, we recommend checking out this review by Caitlin Moore on Anime Feminist:https://www.animefeminist.com/review-dragon-pilot-hisone-and-masotan-episode-1/
This week, in the liminal space between seasons two and three, we talk about the first episode of F-ZERO GP LEGENDS!
It’s the end of season 2 as we know it, and we feel fine! This week, Jimmy and Tyler recap season 2 of Yu-Gi-Oh!, desperately try to remember all of the relevant plot beats, and wrap things up before we jump into the next season.Later, Lauren joins us for Tyler’s worst game yet, and helps us finish up the Season 2 Monster Bracket, in which we crown an ULTIMATE CHAMPION!
Welcome to the show! Just a heads up, we spend the first 5 1/2 minutes getting serious and talking about current events. It’s an important conversation, but feel free to skip to minute 6 if you’re not in the right space for that right now. Then, we get into a surprisingly super good episode of Yu-Gi-Oh!, as season 2 sort of… kind of… maybe… comes to a close? Join us for a discussion of Winged Dragon mechanics, Kaiba family drama, and the triumphant return of Yami Tea.Later, Lauren joins us for Tyler’s favorite Yu-Gi-Or-Not yet, and we talk about what’s coming next for the podcast!
This week, Marik and Marik face off to see if Marik can make Marik give up being Marik, or if Marik will make Marik give Marik back his Marik! Can Marik Marik Marik, or will Marik Marik Marik Marik? Marik Marik, Marik… Marik?Later, Lauren joins us for a listener-submitted Yu-Gi-Or-Not, and we cover the last Monster Bracket match-up before the finals!
It’s not our fault— television made us do it!This week on the show, we spend the first ten minutes talking about cassette tapes and eggs, then ten more minutes on celebrity Duel Monster decks. Eventually, we dig into a lore-heavy episode about why Marik is so gosh-darned evil, by golly.Later, Lauren joins us for the Yu-Gi-Or-Not that Jimmy’s been dreaming of, and ROUND 1 of the Monster Bracket semi-finals!
This week, everything’s made up and the Life Points don’t matter, because magical BS is here to save the day! Can Jimmy and Tyler decipher the twisted web of fate and figure out how Kaiba STILL doesn’t believe in magic? Well, no, probably not, but it’s a fun episode anyway! Later, Lauren joins us for the reclamation of her Yu-Gi-Or-Not throne, and the end of the Monster Bracket quarter-finals!
Hey, how’s everyone doing this week? I hope you weren’t looking forward to an action-packed episode that really moves the plot along, because uh… this ain’t it, fam. But join us anyway as we discuss Kaiba’s dubious security practices, Mokuba’s entirely separate heist movie, and the introduction of our strict new one-boy-per-boy policy!Later, Lauren joins us for a surprisingly tense Yu-Gi-Or-Not, and we talk about one of the toughest Monster Bracket line-ups yet!
We return after two weeks of quarantine nonsense, and much like what happens to Mai in these episodes, all memory has been erased from our minds! Listen in as we rely on our notes to remind us of what was, admittedly, a pretty good three-parter.Then, Lauren joins us in the studio for another round of Yu-Gi-Or-Not, and two rounds of the Monster Bracket!
This week, we have a spoiler-free conversation about Tiger King, a brief interlude to sing the praises of healthcare workers, and a lengthy conversation about historical horses.Oh, and somewhere in there we talk about Yu-Gi-Oh.
Everything’s topsy-turvy this week, as Lauren kicks off the show with Yu-Gi-Or-Not and two more monster bracket match-ups! Then, Jimmy and Tyler talk about two episodes of PEAK YU-GI-OH, where their only fault is that it took so long to get here.
In this episode, Jimmy plays an MMO, Tyler has anxieties about the general state of things, and Lauren scores a perfect game of Yu-Gi-Or-Not with basically no effort. Then, we discuss the comparative merits of Fortress Whale, Amazon Chain Master, Cyber Jar, and Amazon Swordswoman!
On this week’s show, a listener achieves a childhood dream, Jimmy does several impressions, and Tyler explains card game meta to Pegasus. Then, Lauren joins us for a Metroid-filled Yu-Gi-Or-Not, and we weigh in on Blue-Eyes White Dragon versus Doll of Demise!
Witness beleaguered saint Jimmy carry a still-ill and JoJo-obsessed Tyler through the final two thirds of Yugi’s duel against Bakura! Marvel as Bakura’s plan falters! Be dazzled as we get side-tracked by basically everything!Later, Lauren joins us for a listener-submitted Yu-Gi-Or-Not, and we spend far too long debating who should go home between Rogue Doll, Zera the Mant, Sonic Maid, and Celtic Guardian!
In this episode, Jimmy and Tyler talk about part 1 of a 3-part duel that Yami Bakura seems Hell-bent on losing. Get it? HELL-bent? Like… like the Shadow Realm? It’s… it’s Hell?Anyway.Later, Lauren joins us for a flavor-blasted Yu-Gi-Or-Not, and we discuss maybe the most boring monster bracket matchup yet: Aqua Madoor versus The Snake Hair!
Aww shoot, it looks like they forgot to put the card game in this one! This week, we dive into a plot-only episode , as the gang gets together for a magical mystery tour of Domino City at Official Dueling Altitude! Join us as we talk about… well, blimps, mostly.Later, despite Pepper’s many protestations, Lauren joins us for an impressive performance in “Yu-Gi-Or-Not”, then we debate whether Vorse Raider or Worm Drake should continue on in the monster bracket.
On this week’s episode, we discuss Baby Nut Lore, the art of having a dueling fetish, and what would happen if Roger Ebert has solved the Millennium Puzzle. Later, Lauren joins us to talk about the Muscles from Brussels JCVD, and discuss the merits of Kisetai vs. The Unfriendly Amazon.
We discuss the recent passings of Mr. Peanut, Kobe Bryant, and sweet baby brother and 30-under-30 Dueling Luminary Bonz. It’s the rule of three, folks.Later, Lauren joins us to talk about Power Rangers, and discuss the monster bracket line-up: Jinzo vs. Kuriboh!
This week, we duel our own hubris as we somehow sink nearly three hours into two episodes that are 80% flashbacks. Strap in, folks! It’s gonna be a bumpy one.Later, Lauren joins us to talk about the Wiggles, then weigh in on our monster bracket. This week’s bracket includes Dark Magician vs. D.D. Warrior, and Beta the Magnet Warrior vs. Gearfried the Iron Knight!
Tyler’s burning alive in Florida this week, so here’s episode 1 of his and Lauren’s new podcast: Egg-Centric!You can subscribe to Egg-Centric at sandwich.computer/egg
Editing Note: The recording cut out right before the Monster Bracket for some reason. Luckily, we got all the important stuff out of the way before that, so enjoy! This week on the show, it’s Part 1 of our 2-Parter about a 4-Parter? Listen in as we ramble our way through two episodes with super high stakes that we absolutely cannot respect. Later, Lauren helps us discover the magic of the Dilu Horse! In the missing audio, Blue-Eyes White Dragon faced Curse of Dragon, and Rogue Doll faced Gaia the Fierce Knight. If you know us at all, you can probably guess how that turned out.
H— hey, y’all? HEY Y’ALL?IS THAT SHAMU?IS SHAMU IN THIS ONE?I THINK SHAMU IS IN THIS ONE.Later, we unveil an update to Yu-Gi-Or-Not, and get a verdict on Mechanicalchaser vs. Celtic Guardian and Dark Magician Girl vs. Zera the Mant!
In an unprecedented turn of events, we’re doing three episodes for the price of one (still free)! This week we’re watching the full trilogy of “Mime Control”, in which Yugi reminds us that he’s the main character of this television show!
