Today on the 5: I saw news that Konami is releasing a new collection of the classic Gradius games, and looking into the game series led me to find that a series of OVAs were made loosely adapting the storylines of the games. The biggest shock is how good they are!
We're playing two not very classics of their respective genres today as we go back to the back half of the 90s to play an early action game and a relatively early 3D platformer. We're kind of split on which game we prefer along lines I expect you'd predict, but we both had a pretty good time with both games anyway! Also, before that, Jackson gives the MOTHER of all segment 1 updates. At 16:15 or so until 1:15:30 Jackson's Audacity file broke and we had to use the backup. Em's a little quiet during this section but it's mostly okay. I did my best with the edit. Sorry about that!
On this week's Play Retro podcast, Gradius is a series of shooter video games, introduced in 1985, developed and published by Konami for a variety of portable, console and arcade platforms. In many games in the series, the player controls a ship known as the Vic Viper. It's good, and you should play it. At least up to III. IV is weird. Hosted on Acast. The Sims, Age of Empires, Gradius, Elden Ring, Super Mario Bros, Baldurs Gate 3, Dragon Age Inquisition, Metal Gear Solid, Ori and the Blind Forest, Metroid, Diablo, Horizon Zero Dawn, World of Warcraft, Balatro, Vampire Survivors, Roblox

In this first part of this big KONAMI special, Knight Michiel and Peter (www.retrogamepapa.nl) talk about Konami throughout the 80s. They also each tell how they got to know about Konami and what the company means to them, or has meant to them. Peter for example grew up with the MSX and the amazing library of Konami games for that system. Which were the first Konami games we played? What are the standout titles and how many great IPs did they already start with in the 80s? All of that and more in this quest all about Konami!A few of the games that are mentioned: Scramble, Metal Gear, Yie-Ar Kung Fu, Contra, Timepilot, Q*Bert (yes, Konami made a special one on the MSX), Goemon, Twin Bee, Knightmare, Gradius, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and of course Castlevania, amongst many more.In the second part we will discuss Konami throughout the 90s up until now, with Max also joining the Retro Table again!Check out our sponsor: https://feniks-games-consoles.nl/ They also do worldwide shipping!

In episode 057, Addicted and MetalFRO dig in to the 2nd game in Konami's venerable STG series, Gradius II!
Media besproken in De Intocht: Jojo's Bizarre Adventures season 4, Triangle Strategy, The Evil Within en Tembo The Badass Elephant.Media besproken in Het Steekspel: Gradius Deluxe Pack (Sega Saturn) en Lomax (Playstation 1).
False Advertising. The box advertises Pokémon Light Platinum, Pokémon Crystal, Contra Advance, Mario Party Advance, X-Men: The Official Game, ''Spider-Man 2, Power Rangers Double Pack, Metroid Zero Mission, Donkey Kong Country 3 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, however none of those games can be found on the cartridge. The box also says "No Repeat", when that is a complete lie as there are several repeats. Some notable repeats include Donkey Kong 3, Gradius, Dr. Mario and Joust. Because the box art only shows GBA games, you would also think there would only be GBA games on the cartridge, when in reality, there are only 22 GBA games and the rest of the games are NES games.

This week on The Free Cheese, oh, I get it. We add another shooting game to the list with Konami's parody of its own Gradius. We talk about how other games were born from the Parodius series and wonder why there has yet to be a modern collection. We weigh the difficulty of enjoying an arcade game both on a console and for ranking on a weekly podcast, and dream of new characters for an inevitable Apple Arcade release.

Greetings, Gamers, and welcome to a very special bonus episode, where Bedroth flies solo to discuss the songs featured in the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics! Special thanks to Nikkei on Twitter, who appears to have been the first to publish the official list of 19 songs played in the ceremony. Thanks also to YouTubers Deh Almeida and Nicolas Monteiro, who uploaded rips of the individual themes played at the ceremony which, along with the always-wonderful VGMDB website, helped make this episode possible. Anything I get right today will be a tribute to the information I found there, as well as on various crowdsourced info-banks like Wikipedia (only approved, source-citing articles!) and the Fandom Wiki (for the more obscure stuff). Here's a link to the MediaFiles episode mentioned in the intro. We're blasting off on the first episode of our new SHMUP miniseries with the shooter that set the mold for horizontal STGs - Konami's Gradius. How did this accidental hit become such a groundbreaking series? What anime movie had a huge influence on the design and weaponry of the Vic Viper? How many aliases do the Gradius and Salamander games have? Is this the most repeated arcade game of all time? No STG would be complete without some talk about Morning Music, board issues, weapon strategy, and the obvious Friends connection. We also cover cheap Jeopardy questions, proctology exams, tiny snipers, a Lake Placid pinball game, and bad Mark Wahlberg quotes.

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, then start. Sound familiar? The Konami Code, as this sequence came to be known, is one of the most recognizable artifacts of an earlier era of gaming. Kazuhisa Hashimoto, its creator, has used up the last of his 30 lives. Hashimoto was a programmer at Konami, and created the code during the development of one of Konami's best-known games of the 8-bit era: Gradius.
