In this episode we speak to Anne Lawrence-Mathers, Professor of History at the University of Reading about her new book Medieval Meteorology: Forecasting the Weather from Aristotle to the Almanac, out this year, 2020, with Cambridge University Press. The practice of weather forecasting underwent a crucial transformation in the Middle Ages. Exploring how scientifically-based meteorology spread and flourished from c.700-c.1600, this study reveals the dramatic changes in forecasting and how the new science of 'astro-meteorology' developed. Both narrower and more practical in its approach than earlier forms of meteorology, this new science claimed to deliver weather forecasts for months and even years ahead, on the premise that weather is caused by the atmospheric effects of the planets and stars, and mediated by local and seasonal climatic conditions. Anne Lawrence-Mathers explores how these forecasts were made and explains the growing practice of recording actual weather. These records were used to support forecasting practices, and their popularity grew from the fourteenth century onwards. Essential reading for anyone interested in medieval science, Medieval Meteorology demonstrates that the roots of scientific forecasting are much deeper than is usually recognized. Professor Lawrence-Mathers is the author of The True History of Merlin the Magician and Magic and Medieval Society,(along with Carolina Escobar-Vargas) as well as a host of articles and reviews about Medieval magic and religion. With this book the author continues her examination of spiritual practice – licit and illicit, clerical and lay – as it was culturally understood in the medieval era. Recently I spoke with Adam Lewis, co-founder of MANCAMP, a Canadian gathering dedicated to “the celebration of masculinity.” (Disclosure: Adam is also a mentorship client of mine). Now entering its second year, MANCAMP emerged from Adam's experiences organizing raw and elemental camping trips with small groups of men in the wilderness. What began as paddling into Algonquin Park has grown into a vision of 150+ men coming together for a weekend of transformation, brotherhood, and celebration.Adam shares the story of how MANCAMP was born—first as a seed of inspiration, then through the alignment with his co-founder Geoff ‘Rawa Larden, and finally in the inaugural gathering last September that drew men from across Ontario. Despite the (sometimes) chaotic organizing of a first-year festival, the event sold out and left lasting ripples in the lives of the men who attended. From deep heartbreak to profound breakthroughs, Adam recounts stories of men who returned home more grounded, more alive, and more connected to their families and communities. In our conversation today, Adam and I explore the ingredients that shape the container: archetypal frameworks drawn from King, Warrior, Magician, Lover and a roster of diverse facilitators, as well as sweat lodge, ecstatic dance, shared meals, and the sober presence of men choosing to lean into the work, together. The medicine found in connection and brotherhood itself becomes the initiatory field.I am honored to join as a speaker at this year's event, taking place September 18–21, 2025 at Merkaba Acres in Ontario. “Illusionists and Injustice: Why Every Tyrant NeedsMagicians” TaHa: 57-62 The Pharoah of Musa (s) is not just one man, but anarchetype of an oppressive regime or system. The Quran teaches us how to understand the world, how to recognize the elements of tyranny so we don't fall for them, or worse, perpetuate them ourselves. In this episode of Quran Conversations, Dalia Mogahed and Imam Mohamed Magid discuss the role of “modern magic”, i.e. propaganda and spin, in oppressive systems. You will learn:
Jason Michaels takes a break from hosting his own podcast to discuss The International Brotherhood of Magicians, touring military bases around the world, and how he has embraced his journey with Tourette's not only as a magician but also as a storyteller.

Frank and Squeaks cover Paramount's massive week of moves after the Skydance merger, including a new UFC deal, a bigger theatrical slate, a push for family adventure movies, and fresh Star Trek film plans. They react to Greta Gerwig's Narnia set photos, talk through the young Rambo prequel casting, and share practical steps for Roblox safety that parents can use right now. Reviews land for Alien Earth and King of the Hill. Plus, Frank chats with Alex Austin about building a social platform out of a podcast app and what moderation and growth look like in 2025. Convention plans and network updates round it out. Family adventure is a priority which fills a gap left by pure superhero focus and could broaden audience reach. Two Star Trek films are on deck, one tied to the Kelvin crew and one new project from Toby Haynes. Narnia starts with The Magician's Nephew, which makes the world feel fresh while connecting to classic imagery. The Rambo prequel raises a bigger question about when to create new action icons instead of reviving old ones. Roblox needs stronger safety guardrails, while parents can act now with private servers, whitelists, spending locks, and no random chats. Alien Earth blends practical effects with slow-burning world-building and earns a nine out of ten from both hosts. King of the Hill nails a modern continuation that honors the original and lands a perfect ten out of ten from Frank. Memorable quotes Squeaks on Paramount. Right now, they are not messing around Frank Family adventure feels like the missing lane, and it is a smart way to reach everyone Frank Alien Earth plays like Fargo in space, and I mean that as a compliment Frank, this new King of the Hill does not feel like a reboot, it feels like the next season Squeaks if you are not doing enough to protect kids other people will try, and that should be a wake-up call Call to action If you enjoy the show tap Follow or Subscribe in your podcast app. Leave a quick rating and review to help more geeks find us.
