Crackpot Cinema Ep 21 - L.A. Punk Movies, Part 1 with Allan MacDonell In our most fluid-spewing episode to date, author, raconteur, and Mike and Aaron’s former Hustler magazine boss ALLAN MacDONELL joins us to take on Penelope Spheeris’s götterdammerüng documentary THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION (1981) and the goddamnable dung heap DU-BEAT-E-O (1984). We also delve deep into Hustler office gems such as Mike’s desktop Gatorade urinal and savage sidewalk beating outside a strip club; the invasion of Aaron’s trash can by the Pepsi Pooper; and the Jane Fonda/Ted Turner sex tape that we rated Three-Quarters Erect, but we’re still waiting to get “handled” over. Go listen and rest assured: Allan will be back.

Writer Allan MacDonell shaped his writing style at the punk magazine Slash, refined it while working for Larry Flint at Hustler, and turned it all on its ear with his trilogy of memoirs. Allan tells Marc how his life was shaped by a David Bowie concert, how he immersed his life in the LA punk scene, and how he almost ended it all in a fit of rage at God. They also talk about the slipperiness of truth in nonfiction writing, which is why Allan killed himself off in his new memoir, and he also divulges the real story of how Hustler got Congressman Bob Livingston to resign. You be the judge, and let’s hope Rutmanis is more successful in his current musical incarnation, Hepa-Titus (currently merchandising on Bandcamp).

Punk Elegies (Rare Bird Books) Punk Elegies arrives like a chemically unstable mixture of Richard Yates and Damon Runyon. Set along Hollywood Boulevard at the birth of punk and the death of the 1970s, the thirty-three melancholic, comic laments of Punk Elegies are a mesmerizing concoction of delusion and revelation. A cultural moment, a marriage and one young man's mind and soul spiral through a series of boundless possibilities and arrive at a harrowing finality. In the end, on the spin cycle of destiny, MacDonell circles alone, naked and bewildered in the labyrinth of a pre-AIDS bathhouse inferno. The first sunrise of the rest of his life dares him to step outside.
