Nick welcomes music journalist Jim Ryan from Forbes.com back to the podcast to talk about the new Earth, Wind & Fire documentary and his recent interviews with Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and Jon Spencer of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. They also review recent concerts by George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Phil Manzanera, and Santana with The Doobie Brothers. Along the way, they discuss the parking headaches at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre and the troubling trend of outdoor venues keeping shows going during dangerous weather. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to read listener emails and talk about the new Martin Short documentary. That conversation leads to a deep dive into some of Short's wildest work, including the cult favorite Clifford. They also chat about Top Gun, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, and a handful of other topics that somehow all connect by the end. Trust us, it makes sense when you hear it. [Ep 464]

Dan Navarro on Saying Yes: Writing Pat Benatar's “We Belong,” Voiceover Breakthroughs & Staying Curious at 72Songwriter and voice actor Dan Navarro joins host Jason English at the 30A Songwriters Festival to discuss his “say yes” philosophy and how it shaped his 40+ year career. Navarro recounts nearly refusing to write “We Belong” during a feud with Eric Lowen, then co-writing it in 90 minutes before it became a long-running Pat Benatar hit that now drives most of his catalog income. He explains how saying yes to a small jingle session launched decades of union voice and singing work, including Family Guy and films like Coco, Encanto, and Puss 'n Boots, and why touring remains the income he can control. On this episode of Pilot Season Cartoon Edition, hosts Kinte, Renee, Jen, John, and Allen break down the pilot episode of Family Guy (1999), “Death Has a Shadow,” which originally aired on January 31, 1999. In this opening episode, Peter Griffin loses his job after an incident at the toy factory and soon finds himself in trouble when he receives an unexpectedly large welfare check. Instead of quietly fixing the mistake, Peter goes on a wild spending spree that throws the Griffin family into chaos. Along the way, the episode introduces Lois, Meg, Chris, Stewie, and Brian, setting the tone for the show's mix of offbeat family comedy, cutaway gags, and outrageous humor that would make Family Guy a major force in adult animation. Independent films and film festivals are thriving in Louisiana, and on this episode of Discover Lafayette, we welcome three passionate advocates helping shape the future of filmmaking across the state: Southern Screen Festival Founder and Executive Director Julie Bordelon; filmmaker and Director of Public Relations for the Baton Rouge Underground Film Festival, Jenika Kolacz; and Lafayette native Kelly Swift, Film Programming Director for Manship Theatre and Events Director for the Baton Rouge Underground Film Festival. The conversation explores Louisiana's growing independent film ecosystem, the importance of film festivals in building creative communities, and the realities filmmakers face trying to sustain careers in the state. Julie Bordelon, founder of Southern Screen Festival, reflects on how she entered the industry without formal film school training, learning production hands-on while working in Lafayette during the height of Louisiana's film production boom. “I had no clue what I was doing,” she says of her early days in production. “By the middle of the first film, I was a department head.” Bordelon later served as an entertainment liaison for the City of Lafayette, helping support Louisiana's tax incentive initiatives for film, music, and digital media before launching Southern Screen Festival nearly sixteen years ago. Southern Screen Festival was born out of a desire to create opportunities for local artists and filmmakers in Acadiana. “I pulled them all on to the board and started the Southern Screen Festival without knowing at all what I was doing,” Bordelon recalls. “Just trying to make a scene for us and for other artists and creatives.” In its 16th year, the festival will be held November 19-22, 2026. Learn more at Southern Screen. Today, Southern Screen Festival has evolved into a year-round, multidisciplinary arts organization that extends far beyond its annual November festival. The organization now presents film screenings, workshops, networking mixers, writing programs, pop-up events, live podcasts, and music showcases designed to strengthen Louisiana's creative economy and connect local artists with national industry professionals. Southern Screen Festival has become one of Louisiana's most respected independent arts festivals, attracting filmmakers, musicians, producers, writers, editors, and storytellers from around the world to downtown Lafayette every November. The four-day festival features international screenings, panels, workshops, live performances, parties, and filmmaker networking events designed to create what Bordelon calls “a festival for filmmakers and for artists.” The festival remains intentionally non-competitive, allowing filmmakers at every level to feel equally supported and accessible to one another. Over the years, Southern Screen Festival has welcomed an impressive lineup of industry guests, including Tom Kenny, editor Javier Marcheselli of “Blade Runner 2049” and “Dune,” “Family Guy” writer and actor Alex Borstein, and producer Monty Ross of “Malcolm X.” Bordelon explains that Southern Screen Festival intentionally creates opportunities for festival attendees to interact directly with accomplished industry professionals in workshops and conversations without barriers or gatekeepers. One of the festival's newest expansions is particularly exciting for Acadiana's growing animation community. Southern Screen Festival recently announced plans to partner with UL-Lafayette on a brand-new animation festival launching in April 2027. The event will feature curated animation screenings, educational panels, artist talks, and hands-on learning opportunities aimed at students, emerging creators, and animation fans of all ages. During the interview, Bordelon explains that the idea grew directly out of audience demand for more animation programming at Southern Screen Festival. Southern Screen's commitment to education also includes its expanding student film initiatives. The organization hosts student workshops and showcases for Acadiana students in grades six through twelve, encouraging young creatives to experiment with filmmaking while gaining exposure to professional industry environments. Bordelon also discussed her work through Create Louisiana, which provides grants, mentorship, and creative support to Louisiana filmmakers and artists statewide. The episode also shines a spotlight on the rapid rise of the Baton Rouge Underground Film Festival, known as BRUFF. Launched in 2025 at Manship Theatre in downtown Baton Rouge, the festival sold out its inaugural year and immediately established itself as a major gathering point for Louisiana's independent film community. The festival celebrates indie and genre-focused filmmaking while creating opportunities for networking, collaboration, and hands-on education. Kelly Swift describes BRUFF as “a film festival for filmmakers by filmmakers,” with programming that intentionally supports student filmmakers, first-time directors, emerging artists, and seasoned professionals equally. Last year's inaugural festival featured more than 50 independent films, educational panels, networking opportunities, workshops, and afterparties throughout downtown Baton Rouge. Organizers say one of the most rewarding aspects was watching filmmakers from Louisiana connect organically with artists visiting from Florida, Texas, Georgia, New York, California, and beyond. This year, the Baton Rouge Underground Film Festival will be held from August 27 – 30, 2026. Festival passes start at $30, with full access available for $75. Visit BRUFF for more information. Jenika Kolacz notes that BRUFF's mission goes beyond screenings. “We really want to celebrate independent filmmaking as a whole,” she explains, emphasizing the importance of creating spaces where filmmakers can collaborate, share resources, and build careers together. The festival's organizers also experimented this year with a free FilmFreeway submission day to eliminate financial barriers for filmmakers who might otherwise be unable to afford festival fees. The guests also discuss the broader challenges facing Louisiana's film industry, including fluctuating production levels, workforce sustainability, and the need to better support local filmmakers, not just outside productions utilizing Louisiana tax credits. “Those local filmmakers, those are the people we need to be supporting,” Bordelon says. Despite the challenges, the episode is ultimately an optimistic look at Louisiana's creative future. Whether through Southern Screen Festival's expansion into animation and year-round programming, or BRUFF's fast-growing grassroots momentum in Baton Rouge, all three guests emphasize the same goal: creating spaces where Louisiana filmmakers can collaborate, learn, experiment, and build sustainable creative careers right here at home. Learn more about Southern Screen, Baton Rouge Underground Film Festival, Manship Theatre, and Create Louisiana.

South Park Season 29 finally has a premiere date, but the return comes with a familiar frustration: another short, every-other-week season. In this quick Geek Freaks update, Frank reacts to the September 16, 2026 return date and shares why the six-episode format still feels disappointing for longtime fans of adult animation. The conversation also zooms out to the current state of adult animation, from Family Guy airing two episodes a week to Bob's Burgers being pushed to midseason. We're diving into the "iPod Shuffle" comedy of Family Guy, the sitcom subversion of American Dad, and the miracle of the DVD sales that brought a dead show back to life. The Short Short Film Film Review takes a somber, modern turn with 2025's Boy, I'm Scared. We discuss how this seven-minute masterpiece explores digital intimacy, global friendships, and the quiet heartbreak of saying goodbye over a video call. Finally, the Cruise Cruise docks in 19th-century Ireland for Far and Away. Tom trades the flight suit for a flat cap, pairs up with Nicole Kidman, and discovers that the American Dream involves a lot of bare-knuckle boxing.Three hosts, one talking dog, a digital goodbye, and a very intense land grab. It's time to take Cruise Control.

I vårt mest nordafrikanska avsnitt hittills går vi – på vår arbetsgivare Axel Petzolds begäran – igenom operation Compass. Italienskt haveri utlovas. What better than to feature a brief overview on some of the best spoofs and fan-made takes on the STAR WARS saga: Which short film & music parodies first got the most traction? Are people still making them despite Disney threatening to delete them instantly? All that and a mention on the Family Guy trilogy! This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Caitie back on the show as they discuss the 1986 musical comedy Little Shop of Horrors. In this fun romp,, based on an off Broadway play, which is itself based off a 1960 movie, a man-eating plant (which might also be an alien) devourers anyone that gets close to it. The soundtrack is banging and the cast is packed with All Stars, although most of them only get a sceen or two to shine. We discuss the multiple endings (the happy one vs. the world conquering one), all the time the movie was referenced in Family Guy and whether Andy truly likes musicals, or just Grease. Enjoy the Podcast!Jason, Andy and Dana will discuss a 1986 movie weekly, breaking down all the nonsense there within. The 3 hosts all work together and everyone else around them was getting really annoyed at all the movie talk, so they decided to annoy the world in podcast form.Check out previous seasons to hear them discuss 1982, 1983, 1984 & 1985 movies, as well as a full season of Love Boat episodes (if that is your thing). "Francine, you be very careful out there today—we're at terror alert orange! Which means something might go down somewhere in some way at some point in time... So look sharp!" - Stan Smith This week, we're switching gears and looking back at the first episode of American Dad, which only just returned to Fox after over a decade of basic cable existence. Though the series was at first seen as a cheap copy of Family Guy born out of the misery of the George W. Bush administration, American Dad didn't take long to carve out its own weird, wonderful identity and quietly thrive over the last two decades. Jonathan Van Halem! Comedian! Friend! Delight! More! You can follow him on Substack and check out his tour dates at Punchup Live and you can listen to this delightful conversation we have right here right now! Also, here's some information about Jonathan from Jonathan's very website: "Hi, my name Jonathan van Halem. I'm a stand-up comedian based in Brooklyn, NY. I currently work at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. I host a great stand up show called Hot Gossip. It frequently sells out, and it's been recommended by the New York Times (ever heard of it?). I've performed on some of New York's best showcases, like 50 First Jokes, Newcomers at the Bell House, and One Liner Madness. I have many clips that have done very well online, like my set on the live show for Depths of Wikipedia, and my Top Straightest Moments of 2022/2023/2024. My rant against AMC A-List was named one of Vulture's Best Comedy Shorts of June 2024. I also made this fun, semi-viral video about Chappell Roan. Writing-wise, I did a trial run as a Clickhole contributor in 2023, in which I sold exactly one headline, but shortlisted 17 others (email me and I'll show ya). I've also been in McSweeneys once. When I'm not doing comedy, I'm patiently waiting for the New York Mets to win the World Series. My favorite Family Guy character is Stewie." He's funny and nice and good and I hope you enjoy our chat! And this is only the first HALF of our conversation. For part two, subscribe via Apple Podcasts OR merely click on over here to Patreon!

Check it out and let us know if this premise is worth another, more sober attempt. Featuring audio clips from: Rear Window, Rear Window re-release trailer, Ethics: An Original Documentary, Disturbia trailer, WDSU News, Channel 5 Clips, War of the Worlds (2025), Dumb and Dumber, the Wedding Singer, Conversation with Screenwriter John Michael Hayes, Family Guy, and Paid in Full.
