Join us at Stan Mikita's for crullers, dear listener, as we go through one of the very best comedies of the 1990s: It's Wayne's World. Excellent. But is it truly Wayne's world? How much control does Wayne really have? What does he want? What does he stand for? And will he ever transcend the limitations of his corporeal space? We definitively answer these and so much more, as we cover both the making of the movie (including what sounds like a very difficult experience for director Penelope Spheeris in having to work with Mike Myers) and the movie itself, reading very closely to divine its message. We close out our Women's History Month discussion of Penelope Spheeris with THE movie of the 1990s: Wayne's World, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey! Hear about the film that introduced a generation to "Bohemian Rhapsody" and maybe sort of formed Lauren's entire psyche. Next week, we'll be chatting about Moonstruck, so defo prep for that! Party on!
We continue our Penelope Spheeris series with her first narrative feature, Suburbia. Plot summary: Suburbia is director Penelope Spheeris's study of the Los Angeles punk rock scene in the early 1980s. Evan and his younger brother leave their broken home in an attempt to escape their alcoholic mother. They find family in a group of punks who live as squatters in an abandoned house by the side of the highway.
We're celebrating Women's History Month by discussing some of the best films of the severely underrated Penelope Spheeris, whose filmography is quite something. First up: Spheeris's first feature, The Decline of Western Civilization, an intense, enjoyable, wholly strange documentary about the LA hardcore punk scene in 1979/1980. Even if you're not a punk fan, this is a must-see. We'll be on a brief break next week, but will return the week after to discuss Spheeris's Suburbia (1983), a fictionalized take on the punk lifestyle.
It our 50th episode and joining Morgan on the podcast is joined by playwright, actress, comedienne, and Godzilla super fan, Grace Aki to discuss Penelope Spheeris's 1992 film, "Wayne's World." Grace and Morgan delve into what makes "Wayne's World" hold up, the excellent casting, and the way music is used in the film. Plus we mention some bonus Ishtar lore. His delightful first feature Young Werther opens across Canada this Friday, so writer-director José Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenço is here to kick off the new year by being entirely worthy of Mike Myers' 1992 blockbuster-slash-breakout Wayne's World, directed by Penelope Spheeris. Your genial host Norm Wilner is happy to kick off 2025 riding shotgun in the Mirthmobile.
Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode look at the impact of Saturday Night Live, or SNL, as the long-running US sketch show prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Just how important is SNL in the history of American comedy? And why have we never quite understood it over here? Ellen speaks to actor and former SNL writer Paula Pell about how it felt to get a job on the show after growing up as an obsessed fan - and whether the hectic schedule of Saturday Night Live is always conducive to the best comedy. And she talks to US comedian and podcaster Ashley Ray about SNL's enduring influence on American humour, and its relevance for audiences as it enters its 50th season. Meanwhile, Mark discusses the cinema that has emerged from the series - from big hitters like The Blues Brothers and Wayne's World to box office flops MacGruber and A Night at the Roxbury - with author and Empire magazine editor Nick de Semlyen. And he gets the inside track on working with SNL's legendary super-producer Lorne Michaels - and on bringing the music of Queen to a whole new generation - from Wayne's World's director Penelope Spheeris. Rob and Jeff are looking back at 1980s hair metal! Filmmaker and "Jackass" co-creator Jeff Tremaine joins Rob Lowe to discuss the new docu-series “Nöthin' But A Good Time: The Uncensored Story of ‘80s Hair Metal.” They dive into Rob's memories of living with Vince Neil from Mötley Crüe, the influence of MTV, the connection between Shania Twain and Def Leppard, why Mike Myers chose filmmaker Penelope Spheeris to direct “Wayne's World,” watching Prince open for The Rolling Stones, and more. Plus, Rob answers a question about the “West Wing” score. Got a question for Rob? Call our voicemail at 323-570-4551. Your question could get featured on the show!
This week we're Down to Watch a buncha punks! Dan and Raul take a trip back in time with The Decline of Western Civilization, a 1981 doc filmed from within the Los Angeles punk scene as it was cresting on a wave of drugs, violence, art, and energy so potent the LAPD chief at the time forbade the film's screening. Through interviews, gig footage, and crowd interactions, filmmaker Penelope Spheeris managed to capture one of the most authentic portrayals of a musical movement ever seen on film and does it impressively despite such an unwieldy and abstract genre. This pod is a conversation in admiration and fun for sure, but if the documentary sounds interesting, it's free on YouTube!
For the final episode of our Summer of Brat(s) mini-series, we cover the films of the Brat Pack's defining nerd: no, not Anthony Michael Hall, but the Duck Man himself, Jon Cryer! Sure, you've seen him star in one of the worst sitcoms ever, but have you seen him in possibly the best teen movie of all time? Let's bring this one home with one of the boys' favorite movies: PRETTY IN PINK (plus HIDING OUT and Penelope Spheeris' DUDES!).
We talk about the TSOL Darker My Love 12" EP Strange Club Variant Maroon Dusk. TSOL or True Sounds Of Liberty do not need a lot of introduction. Their sound blending of punk, deathrock, hardcore, art rock, and goth are synonymous with angst, rebellion, and setting their own standards of progression. The gang gets a burn this week as they shack up with TR and live on the outskirts, while reviewing Suburbia (2983) directed by Penelope Spheeris. After the critical success of The Decline of Western Civilization a few years prior, Penelope Spheeris wanted to make a more narrative look at the burnout punk scene in America, taking stories pulled from the real life subjects of her documentary. She even got many of them to lace up their acting shoes and step in front of the camera and portray versions of themselves. Art imitates life, but does anyone care? Her films populate the most notable entries in underground and mainstream 20th century youth culture. Trailblazing filmmaker Penelope Spheeris joins us to share her cheeky Hollywood outsider perspective which allowed her to break legendary ground, with Suburbia and the Decline of Western Civilization trilogy and make significant dents in mainstream film land with Wayne's World, Black Sheep and Little Rascals. Brace for Penelope's snidely self-effacing perspective on movies, music, and Hollywood's club and movie cultures.Penelope traces her fascination with punk and street life back to her turbulently nomadic life as a carnival kid. In the late 70s, she and her film crew stage dove deep into L.A.'s punk infused club scene and emerged with Decline of Western Civilization I… A film which was quickly banned by the LAPD before capturing a devoted midnight screening audience and ascending into cult status. Decline I was followed, seven years later by Decline II which captured The Hollywood metal scene and then by Decline III, Penelope's homage to Hollywood's homeless, punk street kids, one of whom became her long-term boyfriend.Between Declines II and III, Penelope directed Wayne's World. She fills us in on capturing Mike Myers and Dana Carvey's big screen vision, how funny they were on the set and whether or not Freddy Mercury saw the famous head banging, Bohemian Rhapsody car scene??? Disappointments cloud anyone's horizon but Penelope has come to terms with losing Wayne's World II and she's still hopeful that her unreleased doc about Ozzfest '99 will receive the necessary music clearances for wide release. "Wayne's World," a film that transcended its "Saturday Night Live" sketch origins to become a cult classic, encapsulates the early '90s like few other movies do. Directed by Penelope Spheeris and starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, respectively, the film is a brilliant blend of humour, music, and a touch of innocence, all wrapped up in a storyline that's both engaging and hilariously absurd. At its core, "Wayne's World" is a story about friendship, dreams, and the pursuit of happiness in the face of corporate influence. Wayne and Garth are two slackers from Aurora, Illinois, who run a public-access television show from Wayne's basement. Their show, also titled "Wayne's World," is a local hit, catching the eye of television producer Benjamin Kane, played with smarmy charm by Rob Lowe. Kane offers to buy the rights to the show, promising fame and fortune. However, as Wayne and Garth soon discover, the road to success is fraught with sellouts, betrayals, and the potential loss of what they value most: their authenticity and creative control. The film is a riot from start to finish, thanks to Myers and Carvey's impeccable chemistry and their characters' endearing goofiness. Wayne's catchphrases, like "Party on!" and "Excellent!", became part of the cultural lexicon, while Garth's shy, awkward demeanour is the perfect foil to Wayne's exuberant personality. Their adventures, or misadventures, are filled with memorable moments, including their encounter with Alice Cooper, the "Bohemian Rhapsody" car scene that revitalised Queen's song, and Wayne's dream sequences that are both bizarre and hilariously offbeat. One of the film's strengths is its self-awareness. "Wayne's World" frequently breaks the fourth wall, with Wayne and Garth directly addressing the audience, making us complicit in their antics. This technique adds a layer of intimacy and immediacy to the film, drawing the viewer deeper into its world. It's a clever device that Spheeris and the writers use to great effect, allowing the film to comment on its own absurdity and the nature of television and film production. The supporting cast adds depth and colour to the film. Tia Carrere's performance as Cassandra, a talented musician and Wayne's love interest, brings a welcome dimension to the story, challenging Wayne to grow and consider his priorities. Her subplot, involving a record deal that's more about image than talent, mirrors Wayne and Garth's struggles with the television industry. Meanwhile, characters like Ed O'Neill's morose donut shop manager and Lara Flynn Boyle's obsessed ex-girlfriend provide additional comedic highlights. However, "Wayne's World" is not just a string of jokes and catchphrases. It's a commentary on the early '90s media landscape, the commodification of grassroots culture, and the eternal struggle between artistic integrity and commercial success. The film's climax, with its multiple endings, underscores the power of choice and the importance of staying true to one's values, even in the face of overwhelming pressure to conform.Technically, the film is a product of its time, with a soundtrack that's a mix of rock anthems and power ballads that perfectly encapsulate the era. The cinematography and editing are straightforward, serving the story without drawing attention away from the characters and their world. It's a testament to Spheeris's direction that the film feels both timeless and distinctly of its time, a snapshot of a cultural moment that continues to resonate with audiences today. In conclusion, "Wayne's World" is more than just a comedy; it's a cultural artifact that captures the zeitgeist of the early '90s with wit, warmth, and a genuine love for its characters and their world. Its appeal lies not just in its humour, but in its heart, its commentary on the media industry, and its celebration of creativity and friendship. As Wayne and Garth would say, "Wayne's World" is not just excellent, it's a party time that continues to charm and entertain audiences, making it a deserving classic in the comedy genre. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew
Audition does not rank anywhere in the 1999 box office. This is largely because it had no theatrical release in 1999. Rather, Audition played a single screening at the Toronto International Film Festival that year, and would only go on to make a few hundred thousand dollars worldwide during its run. But it developed an enormous cult following since, and has become one of the most revered horror films of its time. And it's easy to see why - Audition is gruesome, inventive, and stunningly unique. And, also, due to circumstances beyond her control, Jenn couldn't watch it. So John did, shares his thoughts, and then they both discuss Penelope Spheeris's unreleased OZZFEST 99 documentary We Sold Our Souls For Rock 'N Roll, which might finally be released at some point in the near future, but, if not, is available in a fairly grainy Vimeo upload. It's great. So is Audition. Watch them both, if you can stomach the latter! If not, just listen to us talk about them!

Katie and Bridget dismantle the He-Man-Women-Haters Club as they re-watch: The Little Rascals! It's a movie all about how you only meet your once in a lifetime friend - once in a lifetime (quote Stymie). Come along as we meet Spanky, the leader of the gang who is way too comfortable with execution, and his best friend Alfalfa, who is in love with the 6 year old feminist herself: Darla. When Alfalfa accidently burns down their clubhouse, the gang sets off to raise some money through hi-jinx and shenanigans. The gang learns some valuable lessons such as: "wood doesn't grow on trees", "nothing beats a duck with a buck!", and more importantly "can't we have a club because we like something!?" Will the Little Rascals earn enough money to rebuild their clubhouse ala go kart race? Does Whoopi Goldberg make the best cameo ever in this movie!? Released in 1994, it was directed by Penelope Spheeris and stars nearly an entire cast under the age of 9 alongside random, famous actor cameos!
Director and screenwriter Penelope Spheeris joins the boys to talk about her special friendship with the late-Tommy Lasorda Jr, her relationship with “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels, the iconic film she turned down, how Donald Trump ended up in one of her movies, breaking David Spade's “comedy balls” and, of course, “Wayne's World”.
In this episode we welcome the legendary Penelope Spheeris and invite her to talk us through her extraordinary life and brilliant career. Barney wastes little time in asking the Louisiana-born filmmaker about the shocking traumas of her childhood and teenage years. We hear about her alcoholic mother's multiple marriages and the family's move to Southern California that led to Penelope putting herself through film school before graduating from UCLA. Along with the Saturday Night Live shorts she made with actor/comic Albert Brooks, Penelope talks about the pioneering Rock 'n' Reel production company that made '70s videos for everyone from Funkadelic to Fleetwood Mac. We also learn about her conversion to punk rock via Brendan Mullen's Masque club, where she shot SoCal hardcore bands like X, Fear, the Germs and Black Flag, the footage winding up in 1981's thrilling Decline of Western Civilization. From the first Decline we jump forward seven years to Decline II — and to a discussion of the '80s glam-metal scene that exploded on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip via bands such as W.A.S.P. and Poison. In addition we hear clips from Mat Snow's 1989 audio interview with all-girl quartet Vixen, sparking a discussion of rampant misogyny on the big-hair metal scene. With Decline II: The Metal Years being our guest's de facto passport to directing 1992's enormo-grossing Wayne's World, we ask Spheeris to recall her not-altogether- felicitous experience of working on the hit Saturday Night Live spinoff with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. We also consider how the week's featured writer "Metal Mike" Saunders bridged the gulf between metal and punk, tracing his maverick career from a 1971 Creem review of Sir Lord Baltimore's Kingdom Come to the 1978 formation of SoCal hardcore band Angry Samoans. After Mark offers quotes from recently-added library pieces about electro-pop duo Erasure, rapper Schoolly D and, yes, Penelope Spheeris, Jasper closes out the episode with remarks on articles about El Paso's At the Drive-In and David Bowie. Many thanks to special guest Penelope Spheeris. Visit her website at penelopespheeris.com. Pieces discussed: The Decline of Western Civilization, Penelope Spheeris: The "Mad Surgeon" of Film, Vixen audio, Sir Lord Baltimore, A Brief Survey of the State of Metal Music Today, Metal Mike Saunders, Angry Samoans, Annie Nightingale, Erasure, Penelope Spheeris interviewed by Richard Harrington, Schoolly D, At the Drive-In and David Bowie.

This week on the show, Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury joins Penelope Spheeris, director of The Decline of Western Civilization trilogy, The Beverly Hillbillies, Little Rascals, Suburbia, and Wayne's World. Spheeris is the host of Peter and the Acid King, a true crime podcast set in the Los Angeles punk scene of the early ‘80s concerning the unsolved murder of Peter Ivers. A pop culture wunderkind, Ivers was many things at once: an all-star harmonica player who played alongside Little Walter, a pal of Van Dyke Parks who opened for Fleetwood Mac, and a songwriter who wrote music for David Lynch's Eraserhead and artists like Diana Ross and The Pointer Sisters. In the early '80s, he found found notoriety as host of New Wave Theatre, which showcased Bad Religion, Circle Jerks, 45 Grave and the Angry Samoans. Peter and the Acid King explores that epochal cultural era and its violent end. Working with investigator and co-creator Alan Sacks, Spheeris narrates with 10-part series, which is just about to finish its run, with world weary charm and sly understatement, as well as her signature attitude. We watched Penelope Spheeris' shelved (thanks SHARON)1999 documentary about Ozzfest '99. Is it officially part of her 'Decline of Western Civilization' documentary series? We think so. It features Black Sabbath, Slipknot, Rob Zombie, System of a Down, Fear Factory, Deftones, Primus, Slayer and many more. We get to talk Spheeris' career, and of course do a deep dive into Nu Metal. It's long. You're welcome. Or...sorry.
So what did Kuarantine do when they weren't onstage performing during their recent tour? They watched Decline of the Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years of course! Jericho, Bassist PJ Farley, drummer Kent Slucher, and guitarists Joe McGuinness and Charlie Parra share their favorite scenes, lines, songs, and bands in the documentary written by Penelope Spheeris. They share trivia about the time, the Sunset Strip, and some of the musicians they've encountered in the scene. This week, Josh and Dru watch Penelope Spheeris' treatise on toxic masculinity, The Boys Next Door. From wiki: “The Boys Next Door is a 1985 American adventure-crime drama film about two teenage boys who leave their small town home on the day of their high school graduation and embark on a crime and murder spree. Roy Alston (Maxwell Caulfield) and Bo Richards (Charlie Sheen) are two outcasts of their high school community. Bo receives $200 as a graduation gift from his grandparents. Facing a lifetime of working blue collar factory jobs, the boys spontaneously decide to use the money to go on a vacation to Los Angeles.” Before that, they discuss To Die For, The Matt Dillon Renaissance including Little Darlings, Over the Edge, Asteroid City, and Lars Von Trier. Drusilla also watched The Chase from 1994. But also? Spookies! They discuss Spookies for the first time. Also, Motel Hell. Josh saw The Ants at Geffen Playhouse; a horror play that he loved. But Josh also watched some 80s werewolf movies: The Howling and Silver Bullet. This brings them to Gary Busey and The Buddy Holly Story. Also discussed: Grease 2, Suburbia, The Decline of Western Civilization Parts 1-3, Wayne's World, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Honeymoon Killers, Thelma and Louise, Avenging Angel, women directors of the 80s, Moon Unit Zappa, true crime podcasts, the whole Crispin Glover thing, Columbine, Empire Records, Badlands, Reform School Girls, and Vidiots. Penelope Spheeris is a film director, producer and screenwriter. She directed all 3 of "The Decline of Western Civilization" with a 4th one on the way. She also directed Suburbia, Black Sheep and Wayne's World. This was one of the most fun interviews I've done this year, maybe ever. Lots of great stories about Hollywood, working with Chris Farley, her unreleased movie about Ozzfest, UFO abductions and so much more! Legendary director, Penelope Spheeris and her daughter/ business partner, Anna Fox are my guests for episode 407! You might know Penelope from the big Hollywood movies like "Wayne's World" and "Black Sheep", but you might also know her from her "Decline of Western Civilization" parts 1-3 documentaries. I came up watching part 1: The Punk Years and Part 2: The Metal Years and loved them. We have a great phone conversation where we find out what happened to the bands, Odin and London from part 2: The Metal Years, why Paul Stanley was in bed with three girls during his interview and much more. You can find The Decline of Western Civilization docs on Amazon or YouTube. I had a great time getting to know Penelope and Anna. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! If you feel so inclined.
