2009's Observe and Report, directed by Jody Hill, tells the story of mall security guard Ronnie Barnhardt (played by Seth Rogen), who is called into action to stop a flasher from turning a shopper's paradise into his personal peep show. But when Ronnie can't bring the culprit to justice, a surly police detective played by Ray Liotta is recruited to close the case. And there's a bunch of skateboarders in the mall parking lot. Kevin and Mike discuss the movie, the skateboarders, mall skateboarding in general, the movie's influences (Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, mainly), and whether or not this film is maybe a little too dark. There's also a whole tangent at the end about musical theater. A typical GLEAMING THE TUBE episode, in other words. Enjoy!
Jody Hill's 2009 dark and twisted mall cop romp, OBSERVE & REPORT, is our feature presentation this week. Listen in as Busy speaks with Drew about her time at the Process. Busy tells us that through the Process she found her way out of awareness hell, something we learn about at the Process. (Listen in to learn about awareness hell.) She also gained Process tools and practices she now uses each day. Busy now experiences a beautiful space where peace and freedom exist. Passionate and articulate, Busy also shares about her activism around reproductive justice. We are grateful for this conversation. MORE ABOUT BUSY PHILIPPS Busy currently stars in the comedy series GIRLS5EVA, produced by Tina Fey, now streaming on Peacock. The series centers on a one-hit-wonder girl group from the '90s who try for another chance at pop stardom. In 2020, Philipps launched her podcast Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best. The show features conversations between Philipps and her creative partner, Caissie St. Onge, and their guests, who reflect on times in their lives when a setback led to better opportunities. From 2018 to 2019, Philipps was the host of the late-night talk show BUSY TONIGHT. Philipps served as executive producer on the show, alongside Tina Fey. In 2018, Philipps released a collection of humorous autobiographical essays in her book THIS WILL ONLY HURT A LITTLE that was immediately a New York Times Best Seller the first week. The book offers unfiltered and candid stories and was published by Simon and Schuster's Touchstone division. Philipps has also used her voice as an advocate and activist. In 2019, she joined the Advisory Board of SeeHer, testified before Congress on reproductive rights after publicly discussing her own abortion, and launched the #youknowme campaign on social media. On the big screen, Philipps was in the STX romantic comedy, I FEEL PRETTY, opposite Amy Schumer and Michelle Williams. She also appeared in Joel Edgerton's thriller THE GIFT, alongside Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall. On television, Philipps was seen in HBO's VICE PRINCIPALS, an 18-episode comedy from the creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill. She also starred opposite Courteney Cox on the popular TBS comedy COUGAR TOWN where she played ‘Laurie Keller.' AS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Bashing: Bashing is a form of cathartic release. It's a powerful and pivotal experience in the Process week. This kind of release supports us in acknowledging, expressing, and transforming strong emotions which may have previously been denied. Expressing emotions like anger or disappointment in this way, we release them from the body. We use the body and our voice to express what we no longer want to hold within us. The more deeply we move into expression, the more space we clear. This creates room to experience forgiveness and compassion. Release work also allows us to feel calm and be able to deal with situations in a manner. It can stop us from taking our ‘stuff' out on others, too! In so doing, we claim our power and freedom. Access the entire 80 minute episode (and additional bonus episodes) by becoming a patron of Junk Filter: https://www.patreon.com/posts/57121333 Street Fight Radio's Bryan Quinby joins the show from Columbus, Ohio to discuss Jody Hill's black comedy Observe and Report. Misunderstood in 2009 as a mean-spirited comedic spin on Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, it is clearer to see in 2021 that Observe and Report was intended as a vicious satire not only of the American police state, but also of the kinds of toxic males that want to be cops, presented as a Judd Apatow-style laff riot. Bryan and I talk about our appreciation for anti-comedy and harsh satire, how this film anticipated the kinds of guys who populate the alt-right, the bad timing of this film being released right after the smash hit comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and how Jody Hill went on to be one of the great modern satirists of American life through his subsequent work for HBO. ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 08/12/2021 Mike is back on the main show to talk about one of the less impactful Seth Rogen movies, but one that's also way better than anyone may actually know. Jody Hill directs 2009's "Observe and Report" also starring Anna Faris, Ray Liotta, and Michael Pena.
Go to patreon.com/reelpolitik to hear the full movie commentary and bonus half hour or so of chatter at the following link: https://www.patreon.com/posts/54719661 Despite being a huge fan of Danny McBride's work with his writing partner and director Jody Hill, I'd never seen the low-budget McBride/Hill debut flick The Foot Fist Way (2006), about a loser martial arts instructor with broadly the standard Danny McBride persona, with all that entails. My own GapeCast writing partner (season two is coming!) Farages Fucked Face insisted on showing it to me, and he asked if we could stream our hangout on Twitch. This, of course, meant I had no choice but to get my own bootlegging rig going (a free program called "mp3 skype recorder") to record it in far better quality than any of the ten viewers on FFF's Twitch would've got at the time (we forgot to advertise it). I liked the film a lot, and once it was finished we kept talking for a while about our comedy inspirations and some of the shit they've got themselves into over time, like Matt Damon and DaBaby have recently, in a segment I like to call 'Casters On Couches Doing Cannabis. Peace & love, Jack NOTE ON LISTENABILITY: Early on in the recording, I cease the hilarious observations and bon mots in order to eat a sandwich, and then eat lots of crisps and sweets. This is mostly within a fairly short space of time, so, as I advise in the recording, just skip ahead if that's not your idea of ASMR. This is also not a great commentary to watch the film along with, as mine and FFF's copies of the film go out of sync at times (as much as I tried to remedy this live in the minute), and the link we were streaming from kept freezing (I tried to cut out as much "for fuck's sake it's frozen" and talk about what link to go on as possible, but it means that the commentary won't run concurrently with the film after a certain point.

We are in the presence of greatness this week with Celia Weston, an incredible actor who joined us remotely despite not even having the internet. Can you believe? You Might Know Her From Dead Man Walking, In the Bedroom, Junebug, Alice, The Talented Mr. Ripley, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Igby Goes Down, Far From Heaven, and The Village. Celia, one of the truest embodiments of the premise of this show, talked to us about bringing improv to Jody Hill’s set but not being encouraged to do so on Nancy’s Meyer’s The Intern, working with auteurs like Todd Haynes and M. Night Shyamalan, sinking her teeth into accents whether Staten Island or Bavarian, and the complexities of joining the sitcom Alice in its fifth season. There was just so so much. Follow us on social media: @damianbellino || @rodemanne Celia Weston IMDB Charlotte Raines (daughter of Ron Raines and Dona Vaughn, Celia’s goddaughter) facilitated our interview, shout out to her. Nominated for Best Supporting Actress Indie Spirit Award for Dead Man Walking Susan Sarandon as Sister Helen Prejean was very generous during their filming Had extremely emotional scene opposite Sissy Spacek in In the Bedroom (2001, Todd Field) Directed actors turned directors: Jodie Foster (Little Man Tate), Diane Keaton (Hanging Up), Todd Field (In the Bedroom), Tim Robbins (Dead Man Walking). Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven) was a tribute to Douglas Sirk (All That Heaven Allows, Imitation of Life) Female directors: Poms (Zara Hayes), The Intern (Nancy Meyers), Jodie, Diane Improvised with Anne Hathaway in The Intern (Meyers not into it) Loved working with director, Jody Hill (Observe and Report). He also directed her in an excellent episode of Vice Principals with Danny McBride where she gets fired and destroys the office. Joined the sitcom Alice in season 5 as Jolene Honeycutt. Was almost in the Private Benjamin tv series but ultimately landed on Alice. Sitcom money paid for her UES apartment. Nancy Walker directed many episodes of Alice, and once came over and told her she was “a real lady.” Matthew McCounaghey’s character in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was originally supposed to be from Staten Island. Has performed Bavarian (Snow Falling on Cedars) and Czech (The Invasion) accents M Night Shyamalan put the cast of The Village through a 19th century bootcamp so they could get that authenticity right Cast as Tom Cruise’s mom in Knight and Day (she’s 10 years older than him) Plays Lady Ambrosia on a crazy episode of The Blacklist. If she fell down a well in real life and could only call one person from the cast of Poms, she’d call Diane Keaton. Did not read The Secret but co-starred in the film. Plays Cate Blanchett’s aunt in The Talented Mr. Ripley and was in the opera scene when Matt Damon had to produce a single tear. While on Alice, she competed on Battle of the Network Stars (1984) and her CBS team beat ABC and NBC

Starting to wrap up the decade with a comedy from Jody Hill and the debut of Danny McBride / 3 Nations Brewing Co. coming in fruity for this one / Geoff's bike is stolen...can he get it back?
The Crummies are a cartoon band project started by Jody Hill in 1995 in Memphis Tn. After years of playing in metal, punk rock and classic rock cover bands Jody decided he’d like to start writing his own material but couldn’t decide on a style/genre to write in having been influenced by so many different styles of rock/pop music. After attending an Infinity Record Convention he rediscovered his love for The Archies and all things Bubblegum. So, after buying a Fostex DMT8, one of the first stand alone hard disk recorders, he decided to start writing and recording his own material using as many different influences and different musicians as possible to begin learning the craft of songwriting and recording. The Crummies project gave him complete freedom to try anything in order to learn these skills. The Crummies recorded 4 cd’s worth of music , 1 Everything’s Crummy, 2 Mingle Mangle 3 Guitar Face, and 4 Hits, Smashes and Blockbusters. After the 4th cd Jody moved to NYC and continued collaborating with other musicians, writing songs and performing with his new project 76 and a Cramps tribute band called Flamejob. Jody moved to LA in 2016 and is guitar teching at McCabe’s Guitar Shop and still writing/recording new music.

Hollywood Handbook’s best co-host, Hayes Davenport, happened to be in New York recently on a trip back from Italy and stopped by the kitchen. First of all, I’m SORRY about the scrappy audio quality. I explain what happened in the intro. ANYWAYS, this was a really fun and informative episode. Hayes and I talked about the origins of Hollywood Handbook and why certain guests have trouble on it, his new local politics show the LA Podcast with Scott Frazier, writing for Danny McBride and Jody Hill, the impossibility of ethical consumption under late capitalism, being a YIMBY vs a NIMBY vs a PHIMBY, whether or not dunking on libs by rose emoji Twitter accounts is an effective route to social revolution, problematic policing of the homeless population in Los Angeles, and being a realist about socioeconomic compromise. The outro music is “Ouroboros” by the Mars Volta. Scope below for links to the books that Hayes recommended on the episode. “Down, Out, and Under Arrest” by Forrest Stuart: http://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/D/bo23530208.html “The Color of Law” by Richard Rothstein: https://www.epi.org/publication/the-color-of-law-a-forgotten-history-of-how-our-government-segregated-america/ “The Edge Becomes the Center” by DW Gibson: https://www.dwgibson.net/book/the-edge-becomes-the-center/

And finally, Rachel talks with her co-worker, KIRO Radio host John Curley, about his menuless 2017, and a few of John's more... let's call them "idiosyncratic" food habits. Ho ho ho, yes it’s me, Marc Hershon. Host and nerf herder for Epi161 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. This is a full-on Succotash Clips episode, with a couple of extra treats in store, as befits the holiday season. First up, gotta couple of like dates coming up. This very show has been invited to get onstage in the upcoming 17th Annual San Francisco Sketchfest once again. We’ll be at Piano Fight in the Tenderloin on Sunday, January 14th, at 5:30 PM. Our announcer, Bill Heywatt, will once again be live for this show and we’ll have some special guests. So special I don’t even know who they will be yet – gotta wait to see who’s hanging around from the Sketchfest as we get closer to the date. Admission is FREE but space is limited, so you can click here for your free tickets! Then a week later, at that same SF Sketchfest but at a different venue – the historic, magnificent Castro Theater - they will be doing a tribute screening of The Foot Fist Way, starring Danny McBride and directed by Jody Hill. It’s a hilarious low budget movie if you haven’t seen it, McBride’s first starring role – since he and Hill co-produced it, he had an in, you see. And both of those guys will be on hand and onstage for a live chat which I am honored to have been asked to moderate. That's on Sunday, January 21st, at 8 PM. So get over to SFSketchfest.com or, again, I’ve got the direct link to tickets right here. Also don’t forget that I’m working with Phil Leirness as the announcer on his less-than-a-year-old soundcast Los Angeles Breakfasts Club ON THE AIR. The December edition is up now and you can download ‘er from iTunes or from the homesite: http://LABreakfastClub.com. But now onto THIS show. Here’s the deal with this installment – the clips we’re playing were all pretty much harvested by our Associate Producer Tyson Saner for a show I was GOING to do back in October as a crossover episode with the guys from the Monster Party soundcast — Matt Weinhold, Larry Strothe, Shawn Sheridan and James Gonis. But Matt ended up having back surgery the week I was going to be in LA and we couldn’t pull the thing together. So before these clips start growing mold on them – or the digital equivalent – I figured we’d just do a Succotash Clips where we just play snippets from comedy soundcasts that are horror and sci-fi movie oriented. We’ve got The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, CadaverCast, Comedy Film Nerds, the Universal Monster Cast and The Star Wars Minute. Plus I’ll throw in a clip from Monster Party just give my pals over there some guilt feelings. In addition there's a Burst O’ Durst segment with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst. PLUS a visit to the Studio P wet bar in a new Boozin’ with Bill where Mr. Heywatt is going to mix up an unsavory tribute to Washington D.C. called the Swamp Drainer! And, of course, this whole magilla is brought to you Henderson’s new Holiday Pants. THE CLIPS Monster PartyHere’s a clip from the show responsible for this particular clip collection, Monster Party, and it's actually one of my favorite soundcasts. (You can tell because even with all the shows I have to listen to for THIS show AND my Splitsider.com reviews, I actually subscribe to this one!) This is from their latest drop, featuring a past guest to this show as their guest, and real life friend Rick Overton. The episode is entitled “Future Past” and looks at the future as depicted in films from the past. In this clip, the guys are going off about the way Star Trek thinks we might be going. Comedy Film NerdsWe love Comedy Film Nerds with Chris Mancini and Graham Elwood. In fact I just featured my chat with Chris from the recent Los Angeles Podcast Festival on our last episode. And while they don’t feature strictly sci-fi, monster, and horror movies on their show, they ARE pretty heavily into those genres. Back in their episode 384, the guys – along with guest Kevin Avery - get into a low budget crazy little movie called Dave Made A Maze, where they get into a little aside about none other than Rick Overton, who was just heard on the previous clip. Man, this show is getting’ meta! The Sci-Fi Movie PodcastThe next clip is from a very specific genre soundcast. The show is called The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast (although at their homesite their logo says it’s The Sci-Fi Movie AND TV Podcast…), hosted by Remi Lavictoire and Jonathan Colbon, a couple of film geeks from Canada. This clip is from a recent episode where they were getting into War for The Planet of the Apes. They’ve been around for a few years, so you will no doubt find their show propagated throughout Soundcast Land. Cadavercast Next up is a clip from a show that Tyson says is “delightful” called Cadavercast, a Father-Son Monster Movie Podcast. The hosts are a Dad, Jef Burnham, and his 5-year-old son Alistair. And with a 5-year-old behind the mic, trust me when I saw a horror movie soundcast has never been more adorable. This clip is from their Epi30 where they get into one on of my all time faves, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. Their homesite is actually just up on Soundcloud, and you can find the show on iTunes and other places you might expect to find soundcasts. Universal Monsters Cast There’s soundcast for specific movie genres, like monster movies, say. But then there are shows that get into sub-genres, too – such as the Universal Monsters Cast. First of all, I like that they just call it a “cast” instead of using the “P” word. Our associate producer really likes this show – says the hosts — Gillman Joel, Dr. Shock and Wolfman Josh — really stay on track with the discussion which, in this case, is all about The Mummy. In this clip, its about how Hammer Films treated the character, which came from the Universal corral of monsters. The Star Wars MinuteOne of the best-known and longest-running sci-fi soundcasts around has got to be The Star Wars Minute. It set the bar for micro-genre casts, in that Pete the Retailer (aka Peter Bonavita) and Alex Robinson decided to break down Star Wars in the geekiest way imaginable – devoting each episode to ONE MINUTE of the movie, from beginning to end, including the closing credits. And they’re been working their way through the entire franchise. Currently blazing their way through Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, they are up to minute 18 with guest commentator Chrysanthe Tan, a very talented musician/composer with, clearly, a streak of geek. BOOZIN' WITH BILL Here's Bill's latest recipe, Swamp Drainer, and after you try it you'll be asking yourself the same question I asked myself: Why? That's going to do it for Epi161 but before this clog ends, I have a question for you and, please, answer honestly: Have you been up to the podcast section of iTunes – that’s what they call soundcasts, of course — have you been up there to rate and review the Succotash Show? Of course you haven’t. I don’t blame you. No, wait. Yes, I do. But you can correct that easily enough by jumping up there right now to give us 5 stars and a short, pithy review. It really helps to get the word out there because our listing pops up higher in the pages and pages of soundcasts. If you’re in San Francisco during January don’t forget about our dates at SF Sketchfest and you can grab FREE tickets for the Sunday January 14th LIVE Succotash Show at 5:30 PM by clicking on the link up above. Hope to see you around. And, as always, thanks for passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

Danny McBride is comedic writer and actor who started his career starring in the cult classic comedy, The Foot Fist Way. Although the film went to Sundance and was a modest success, McBride went back to North Virginia to work as a substitute teacher. Danny and frequent collaborator Jody Hill began creating the series Eastbound & Down, which would jumpstart McBride's career and make him a film and television star. He has appeared in numerous comedy films, such as Tropic Thunder, 30 Minutes or Less, and Observe and Report. McBride is perhaps best known for writing and starring in the HBO series Eastbound & Down, where he plays disgraced MLB player, Kenny Powers. McBride sat down with Jesse to talk about about working with Jody Hill, writing for Eastbound and Down, and dealing with people who idolize Kenny Powers just a little too much. Danny McBride's new show is called Vice Principals. Jazz bassist Miroslav Vitouš explains how working with Weather Report on the composition Morning Lake is an experience he will never forget. Miroslav Vitouš's new album is called Music of Weather Report. Jesse talks about the film Hunt for the Wilderpeople and why calling it "twee" is actually a compliment.

We talk who Kenny Powers was possibly based on, the direction of Jody Hill and an early pilot script. Next week, we'll be inducting our first pilot into the Pilot Study Hall of Fame.
Funny and all around awesome guys Danny McBride and Jody Hill come on the podcast to talk about their rise to fame, coming up with ideas for Eastbound and Down, and interacting with crazy fans!
Recorded August 10, 2011. Interview taped June 23, 2011. Episode 87 with Josh Zerkle, Aaron Merrill (news) and Phil Raintree (Old Timey newsreel)
Between them, actor Danny McBride and director Jody Hill have brought the 70's anti-hero to comedy, first with the indie film, The Foot Fist Way, and now, with Eastbound & Down on HBO. It's awfully...funny.
Co-host Jeffery Heatherly and I discuss Jody Hill's 2009 black comedy Observe & Report. Populated by a despicable cast of characters, it's a fearless movie that goes to some truly dark places - and we love it. Topics of conversation include the career of Seth Rogen, Anna Faris' willingness to make herself disgusting in the name of comedy and the mixed critical reception of the film. Two final points: You should not compare this movie with Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and Jeff is not a terrible person!
David Gordon Green is a director. His films have ranged from the touching indie drama George Washington (his debut) to his most recent, the stoner action-comedy Pineapple Express. He's also worked with college friends Jody Hill, Danny McBride and Ben Best on the HBO series Eastbound and Down, and on the upcoming fantasy comedy Your Highness.
Elvis hosts writer-director Jody Hill (The Foot Fist Way) whose latest work is the HBO TV series Eastbound & Down.
