Have you ever wondered whether you're actually burned out on veterinary medicine—or just burned out by the place you're practicing it? In this episode, Dr. Brianna Armstrong and Phoebe Valdez tackle a difficult but important question: How do you know if you're in a toxic work environment? More importantly, what should you do when you've realized it's time to move on? Veterinary medicine itself is not inherently toxic. But some workplaces are. When we confuse the profession with the environment, we risk walking away from careers we once loved. This conversation explores the warning signs of toxic culture, why people stay longer than they should, how to evaluate your next workplace, and how to leave with integrity when it's time for a change. In This Episode 5 Signs You May Be Working in a Toxic Environment 1. Fear is Driving Behavior 2. Problems Are Always People, Never Processes 3. Turnover Is Constant 4. Speaking Up Changes Nothing 5. You Don't Feel Like Yourself Anymore Before You Leave If you're on the fence, consider having an honest conversation with leadership first. Approach the conversation with: Curiosity instead of accusation Specific examples A desire to understand A willingness to collaborate on solutions How leadership responds can tell you a lot about whether change is possible. How to Evaluate Your Next Hospital Before accepting a new position: Talk to current team members. Ask why previous employees left. Read online reviews. Request a working interview. Observe how the team handles stress and conflict. Ask about the hospital's values. Make sure the culture aligns with your own values. Remember: hospitals interview candidates, but candidates should be interviewing hospitals too. How to Leave Your Hospital Well Leaving professionally protects your reputation and helps move veterinary medicine forward. Give Appropriate Notice Read your employment contract carefully. Follow any notice requirements outlined in your agreement. At minimum, provide two weeks' notice. For veterinarians, managers, and leadership roles, one to two months' notice is often more appropriate when possible. Stay Professional Until the End Continue showing up and doing quality work. Avoid disengaging or becoming negative. Finish strong and leave your team in the best position possible. Don't Burn Bridges Avoid dramatic exits. Don't vent on social media. Don't attempt to "get even." Veterinary medicine is a small profession, and your reputation matters. Provide Constructive Feedback If you're asked why you're leaving: Be honest. Be specific. Focus on behaviors and systems, not personal attacks. Share feedback with the goal of helping future team members. Remember Your Goal The goal is not revenge. The goal is a healthier future for yourself. Key Takeaway Every time someone leaves a toxic workplace and chooses a healthy one, they're casting a vote for the future of veterinary medicine. Great hospitals deserve great people. And great people deserve great workplaces. In this episode of the Prolonged Field Care Podcast, Dennis sits down with trauma surgeon Mark Shapiro for a no-BS masterclass on wound ballistics. They break down why understanding the physics of penetrating and blast trauma matters in austere and combat environments — even when experience makes you cynical. From high-velocity rifle rounds and their massive temporary cavities to the infectious nightmare of shotgun wounds and the four phases of blast injury, Mark shares hard-won lessons from civilian Level I trauma centers and years training special operations medics and ground surgical teams. They tackle the myths around entry/exit wounds, when (and when not) to explore right upper quadrant gunshot wounds downrange, why you should almost never pack the abdomen or chest from the outside, how to assess neurovascular status in blast-injured extremities, and why bizarre bullet paths and “stable” patients with signs of life can still surprise you.Key Takeaways:Kinetic energy (½mv²) means velocity is king — high-velocity rifle rounds create devastating temporary cavities and fragmentation that can turn one projectile into many.Jacketed rounds still fragment at rifle speeds; never assume a clean through-and-through. Bone fragments act like secondary missiles and can create wounds up to 3x the size of the fragment. For stable patients with right upper quadrant GSWs in resource-limited settings, expectant management can be reasonable — but you must have a plan, know your limits, and be ready to move if things change.Never pack the abdomen or chest from the outside in most cases. It risks pushing debris deeper and worsening injuries. Cover exposed organs if needed, but don't shove gauze into body cavities.Shotgun wounds (especially buckshot/birdshot) are “mobile IEDs” — massive tissue destruction, heavy debris inoculation, and extremely high risk of infection, fistula, and devascularized tissue requiring serial debridement. In extremity blast trauma, assess vascular status (pulses, Doppler signals, color, warmth, capillary refill) and neurologic function. The ~6-hour window to revascularization is critical, but the decision point comes earlier.Training + common sense + adaptability beat rigid protocols when resources are limited. Sometimes the best move is observation.Chapters04:15 – Why Wound Ballistics Knowledge Still Matters (even when you're cynical)08:30 – High-Energy Rifle Wounds: Muzzle Velocity, Kinetic Energy & Spitzer Bullets13:45 – Fragmentation, Tumbling & Secondary Missiles (bone shards & unpredictable paths)18:20 – Clinical Reality: Multiple Injuries & Why “Small Entrance, Big Exit” Is a Myth22:50 – Entry vs. Exit Wounds: When Trajectory Actually Matters (and when it doesn't)26:40 – Right Upper Quadrant GSWs: Explore, Observe, or Expectant Management Downrange?31:10 – The Dangers of Packing Abdominal & Chest Wounds from the Outside34:55 – Low-Energy Pistol Wounds: How They Differ (or Don't) from Rifles37:20 – Shotgun Wounds: Close-Range Carnage, Debris & Infectious Nightmares42:40 – IEDs & Modern Explosives: Blast Physics, Ukraine Patterns & Hard-Ground Effects48:15 – Primary, Secondary, Tertiary & Quaternary Blast Injuries Explained52:30 – Neurovascular Assessment in Blast-Injured Extremities (Conscious & Unconscious Patients)56:45 – Lessons from the Trauma Bay: Common Sense, Training & Knowing When to Deviate from ProtocolFor more content, go to www.prolongedfieldcare.orgConsider supporting us: patreon.com/ProlongedFieldCareCollective or www.lobocoffeeco.com/product-page/prolonged-field-care

Each Academy podcast contains valuable insights and takeaways to become the best version of yourself and create an authentic, fulfilling life. Zarathustra transmits 5th Dimensional Quantum frequencies in each episode with transformational tools while discussing different topics to help you maintain this new frequency in your daily life. Zarathustra has created a practical system of transmitting the truth to his audience allowing transformation and freedom from suffering. Spiritual development requires an open heart. It is virtually impossible for a seeker to advance to higher consciousness if they don't love themselves. The belief system which has been ingrained in our cellular memory from childhood that we are not good enough results in a conditioned mind. The conditioned mind holds the false belief that there is something missing in our lives, that we are incomplete, that we need to gain something in order to become happy and whole, which is not true. After a life time of searching, Zarathustra has blended a practical system of Eastern and Western methods and techniques to help the Academy members to free themselves from anxiety, negative thoughts, lack of self-love and self-acceptance and destructive emotional patterns through a systematic way to raise your vibration to 5D Vibrational Frequency, which enables you to live a vibrant life of freedom and happiness. The Key Elements To Freedom: Zarathustra recognizes continuity and consistency are the key elements to freedom. In order to help you achieve your spiritual goals, it's best to have a highly effective spiritual practice, free of dogmas, false beliefs and superstition that helps you raise your vibration to 5D Vibrational Frequency as well as the ability to maintain this newly found higher level of consciousness. This translates to a life filled with inner peace, self-love and happiness which is the goal of every spiritual seeker. New knowledge and benefits are gained with each replay. Hani AlMalki — aka Bedouinfoodie — returns to podcast for a second sit-down, and it lands nothing like the first. When war hit the region, he started writing: a daily diary on his Instagram Stories that became required reading for Dubai's food community, built on the one thing most creators trade away early: credibility. The conversation runs through the reset Dubai‘s restaurant scene needed, why comfort food wins in uncertain times, how AI became his trial chef, and the business model he built inside other people‘s restaurants.
Thinking about starting a landscape project? In this popular episode from last summer, Joanne shares practical advice from her years as a landscape designer, including how to plan with confidence, choose the right materials, and work with professionals to avoid costly mistakes. Some of the topics covered in this week's episode: Observe what works in real life Look at nearby homes to see what materials, colours, layouts, and garden styles you like before starting your project. This is often more practical than relying only on online inspiration because local examples show what is actually available and realistic. Do your homework before choosing a landscaper Ask for referrals, review past work, and check websites or social media before choosing a landscaper. Use design and planning to avoid expensive mistakes Use a design, sketch, or simple plan to avoid mistakes with layout, sizing, materials, maintenance, and future upgrades. Planning helps create a project that looks good, functions well, and avoids costly fixes later. Have a topic you'd like Joanne to discuss? What separates a leader who communicates with confidence from one who communicates with true influence? In this episode, Michael Reddington sits down with Joel Silverstone, founder of This Feels Right and a former professional actor who now coaches leaders on elevating their interpersonal communication and influence. Joel blends emotional and social intelligence with his acting background to help leaders move from confident to compelling, and the framework he shares in this conversation is immediately actionable.Joel breaks down his MOVE model, the difference between acting, reacting, and responding in real conversations, and why most people are listening to solve the problem rather than listening to understand. He also challenges the idea that validation means agreement, and explains why skipping that step is one of the most common ways leaders quietly damage trust. What You'll Learn in This EpisodeWhy an actor's job has nothing to do with acting, and what that teaches us about presence in conversationHow the MOVE model (Mindset, Observe, Validate, Engage) creates momentum in even the most difficult conversationsThe difference between reacting and responding, and why one builds trust while the other breaks itWhy validation is not agreement, and how skipping it quietly damages relationshipsHow to listen without solving the problem, and why that skill matters more than most leaders realizeWhat the "clue bird" reveals about the moments leaders most commonly missHow to change the script when a conversation goes sideways, and why breathing is the first moveThe difference between motivating and manipulating, and how to tell which one you are actually doingChapters:(00:00) Introduction to Joel Silverstone and the MOVE Model(04:22) Why an Actor's Job Is to Move the Other Person(06:13) Breaking Down the MOVE Model: Mindset, Observe, Validate, Engage(09:03) How to Stop Making the Other Person the Problem(13:02) Observation Skills and the Closed Circuit Camera Technique(17:14) Why Validation Is Not Agreement and How to Practice It(21:29) The "Yes, And" Framework and Listening Without Solving(26:15) Driving Engagement When Someone Won't Play Ball(31:00) How to Change the Script When Conversations Get Challenging(35:12) The Difference Between Motivating and ManipulatingLinks and Resources:This Feels Right - https://www.thisfeelsright.caJoel Silverstone | LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/joel-silverstoneSponsor Links:InQuasive: http://www.inquasive.com/Humintell: Body Language - Reading People - HumintellEnter Code INQUASIVE25 for 25% discount on your online training purchase.International Association of Interviewers: Home (certifiedinterviewer.com)Podcast Production Services by EveryWord Media

When your homeschool child won't do work, it's rarely just about laziness—it often signals a deeper need for curiosity, connection, and meaningful engagement. If you're a homeschool mom, you've probably said or thought something like: “My kids don't really care about their lessons. They just want to get through it so they can get on their screens.”“I think my daughter only enjoys going to coop because of her friends, not any actual learning.”“He races through his work without engaging—he's just checking boxes.”“There's outright resistance now. I don't know if it's the work or if it's me or if he’s just rebellious.” These situations are very common, not unusual. And the question behind them is universal: how do you help your child become an independent learner who is genuinely curious and engaged—not someone who treats learning like a chore to avoid? If this resonates with you, a great first step is my free Deschool Your Homeschool Checklist, which helps you step back from school-y thinking, reconnect with how your child naturally learns, and create space for curiosity, calm, and connection. Grab your free Deschool Checklist and Help Your Kids Love Learning 5 Reasons Why Your Homeschool Child Won't Do Work Reason 1: When Your Homeschool Child Won’t Do Work — Learning Feels Like a Chore Many children resist because they've learned to associate “learning” with compliance or tedium. They may rush through assignments just to get them done or outright refuse work that doesn't interest them. To be fair, we adults do that too. When someone says, “Hey, you know what would make tax season easier and more satisfying? Take a course on filing your taxes.” Interesting, you think, and clever, that’s exactly what I should do! (No, you don’t think that. You think, naw, thanks, I’ll do what I have to do until next tax season.) Can I hear an amen? ps don’t respond if you actually enjoy doing taxes, ha–it won’t serve my point;) Well, ditto for your kids. Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck explains that a fixed mindset develops when children feel their worth is tied to “doing it right.” In these cases, resistance is not a character flaw—it's a protective response. What you can do: Follow your child's curiosity whenever possible. Show them that learning happens everywhere: in the kitchen, in nature, in everyday problem-solving. Reason 2: When Your Homeschool Child Won't Do Work—Check Your Own Motivation First Kids are highly sensitive to the adults around them. If you're scattered, anxious, or uninspired, they pick up on it. Angela Duckworth, author of Grit, notes that parents who raise resilient, motivated children model passion and perseverance in their own lives. And isn’t that what we all want? This homeschool lifestyle isn’t just equipping our kids to do live a purposeful life, it’s offering us that opportunity too! (And I encourage you to take it!) What you can do: Reconnect with your own curiosity and goals. Are you motivated? What gets you up in the morning? Model learning and persistence in ways your child can observe. Show them you're engaged by joining a book club, starting your own business, or simply signing up for a class at the local community college. Show them that you're learning math concept right alongside them (or whatever other topic you find challenging, I chose math because I had to learn it before I taught it

Welcome to a new episode of Spark of Awareness, continuing the series on the six human needs. If you missed the previous episode, I encourage you to connect with it. Each of these needs carries both a constructive expression and a shadow expression. In leadership, these shadows inevitably appear to varying degrees, and when they remain unconscious, they can hinder growth, decision-making, and long-term impact.Today, we explore the second human need: variety and uncertainty. This need reflects the desire for change, novelty, stimulation, unpredictability, adventure, risk, and new experiences. It is the drive toward what is unknown and evolving. If you recognize this in yourself, it is worth examining honestly. The Need for Variety in LeadershipPersonally, this need has been very present in my own life.I have often been drawn to new projects, new experiences, and new environments that create a sense of renewed energy. Repetition, long cycles, and sustained commitment have at times felt difficult. At its extreme, this pattern can lead to restlessness and a constant search for change. Without awareness, it can manifest in premature exits from teams, companies, or relationships — not necessarily because something is wrong, but because internal energy is pushing toward novelty. In hindsight, I can see moments where I was not responding to external reality, but to an internal need for change. Instead of understanding what was happening within me, I expressed it through external disruption. This pattern influences how things begin and end — projects, commitments, and relationships. The Shadow of Constant ChangeIn leadership, this need can become highly destabilizing. For example, in executives or founders, it may appear as constant shifts in direction — an ongoing pursuit of what feels new, exciting, or stimulating. However, what feels energizing for the individual is not always what a business requires.Organizations often need stability, consistency, and sustained execution. When leadership is driven primarily by novelty, it can create confusion and lack of grounding within teams.A key challenge is distinguishing between:* Necessary evolution* And personal preference for changeWithout this distinction, decision-making becomes reactive rather than strategic.Restlessness and the Creation of ChaosThis need can also express itself through intensity. When there is no clear channel for novelty or stimulation, it may manifest as unnecessary complexity, conflict, or even chaos. Situations become more complicated than they need to be, not because of external conditions, but because internal energy seeks movement. In some cases, this creates artificial urgency — a sense that something must be fixed, solved, or disrupted in order to feel alive. In business environments, this can be particularly damaging, especially where discipline, clarity, and consistency are required.Instability and Lack of CommitmentWhen the need for variety dominates, it often leads to instability. There can be a resistance to planning, structure, or long-term commitment. This pattern is also visible in broader society, where commitment in work, relationships, and long-term projects is increasingly fragile. In a leadership context, this becomes a barrier to mastery. Growth requires repetition, patience, and sustained focus. Without that, execution becomes fragmented.Another shadow expression is addiction to novelty: constantly starting new things while rarely completing them. This leads to scattered energy and unfinished potential. The Cost of Unchanneled EnergyAt the core, this is not a lack of energy — it is often the opposite. Too much energy. Many people with this pattern have significant internal energy, creativity, and drive. The challenge is not generating energy, but directing it.When it is not consciously channeled, it tends to fragment:* too many projects* constant restarting* unresolved commitments* loss of continuityInstead of creating value, the energy disperses. The key question becomes: how do you channel energy into creation rather than disruption?Awareness and Rechanneling EnergyThe first step is awareness: recognizing the pattern without judgment.Personally, I noticed a tendency to start many projects but struggle to sustain them. Over time, I learned that consistency itself is a discipline — not a limitation of creativity. The practice is not to suppress this energy, but to contain and redirect it.When restlessness arises, the first step is not immediate action. It is observation. Sitting with the energy without reacting to it.Often, nothing needs to be done immediately. The body may feel agitated, but the system stabilizes when the impulse is not instantly acted upon.Once the intensity settles, the energy can be redirected into something constructive:* writing* reflecting* creating* consolidating vision* refining directionThe goal is not to eliminate movement, but to transform it into intentional creation.Separating Expression from ResponsibilityOne important practice has been learning where expression belongs.Creative exploration, experimentation, and self-expression are valuable — but they are not always appropriate in every context. For example, in coaching or leadership environments, the role is not self-expression, but service. The focus is on the needs of others, not internal impulses. This separation is essential.Without it, personal energy can unconsciously influence spaces that require neutrality, clarity, and presence. The same applies to leadership in organizations: personal excitement should not override what the system actually needs.A useful question becomes:Is this decision serving the business, or serving my own need for stimulation? If it is the latter, it may belong elsewhere.Channeling Energy Outside of WorkWhen personal expression is needed, it is important to give it a proper outlet outside professional responsibilities. This may include creative practices, movement, or environments where expression is held safely and does not impact others' work or expectations. This separation allows leadership spaces to remain stable, while personal energy still has room to flow. Both needs can coexist — but they must be held in the right contexts.Closing Practice: Working with Restless EnergyTo close, I invite a simple meditation practice centered on this theme.Sit comfortably and bring attention to your breath.Observe your internal state without attempting to change it.Notice where energy is present in the body:* the chest* the belly* the mind* the breathSimply observe. As you continue breathing, notice how the energy shifts. In many cases, it begins to regulate on its own. Some areas soften. Some tension releases. A sense of grounding emerges naturally. This practice does not require effort — only awareness. When restlessness appears in daily life, return to this observation. Sit with it before acting. Then, if needed, journal:* What is this energy asking for?* Where does it want to go?* How can it be directed constructively?Over time, this builds the ability to transform raw energy into intentional creation.Closing ReflectionThe need for variety is not a problem. In its healthy form, it brings creativity, innovation, and movement. In its shadow form, it creates instability, fragmentation, and unnecessary disruption. The work is not to remove this energy, but to learn how to channel it.Next week, we continue with the third human need: significance — the need for recognition and being seen

What if navigating your family through life's toughest moments felt clearer, calmer, and more manageable? In this episode of Life Of And, Tiffany sits down with Michelle Gambs to discuss how parents can show up for their kids even when life feels impossible. Hard seasons, like illness, loss, divorce, financial strain, or marital challenges, ripple through your home, shaping how children experience the world. Michelle offers practical guidance on balancing honesty and protection while helping kids process their emotions and maintain family stability. This conversation reminds us that children don't need perfect parents. Grounded Positivity: Choosing to Rise Beyond the DarknessIn a world full of "toxic positivity" that tells you to just smile through the pain, it can be hard to find real hope. True positivity isn't about ignoring life's struggles; it is the grounded, honest, and sustainable kind. It is acknowledging the hard days while still remembering that you are allowed to look forward to the future. In today's session, we explore how to retune our perspective and anchor ourselves to genuine joy. Using a calming 4-2-6 breathing practice, we will intentionally release the negative anchors of the past and the heavy weight of expectations. We take up the space we deserve, open our minds to deep relaxation, and choose to rise—not perfectly, and not without difficulty, but with courage. Find a comfortable place, drop your shoulders, and allow these reassuring truths to land in the sanctuary of your mind.Building Our Sanctuary: An Update on the "Anchored" AppI have been incredibly moved and deeply emotional over the staggering support for our upcoming mobile app, Anchored. Day 18 of the Minimal Mindfulness Guidance Challenge explores Hand Awareness - a meditation that deepens embodied presence through mindful movement. Through minimal cues, this practice invites you to look at your hands while still, notice how they feel from the inside, then move one finger as slowly as possible. Observe the intention before the movement—the subtle impulse that precedes action. This meditation cultivates awareness of the mind-body connection at its most intimate level.

Speaker: Pastor Brent Armstrong Passage: Matthew 24:15-28
Anyone tuning into Fox News last week might think the channel had converted to a home shopping network that sold only one product - the glorious leader himself Donald J. Trump. The president was treated like an overpriced trinket. “Look at how he stands next to Xi Jinping. Observe how his tiny makeup covered hands touch the Chinese leader's! Such majesty!”It wouldn't have surprised me if Fox shifted to a sales pitch while discussing the president, “If you call right now, you too will get our exclusive offer and pay for your own Glorious Leader replicate in four easy to pay installments of $19.99!”There were no definitive trade deals to crow about, no negotiations with Iran, and no relief in sight for sky-high gas prices.Trump dined with and stood next to the Chinese president while a small group of billionaire business owners followed them around like dutiful ducklings.China is known for making promises it doesn't keep, stealing intellectual property, threatening its neighbors, committing human rights abuses, cheating on trade agreements, suppressing freedom of speech, crushing dissent, and violating international embargoes and sanctions.None of this seemed to bother Trump. If Xi Jinping promised to buy more U.S. soybeans, then that was good enough for the president even if the country has still not matched its prior commitments to U.S. farmers. It was a lot of pageantry with very little substance, another distraction for Trump's disastrous war in the Middle East and failed domestic policies.Other topics on the network included the ongoing war with Iran, an attack on Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the network's aggressive promotion of Spencer Pratt, a former reality television star, for Los Angeles mayor. Potential to Powerhouse: Success Secrets for Women Entrepreneurs
What if the most powerful thing you could do as a leader… is say less? In this solo episode of Potential to Powerhouse, Tracy Holland unpacks one of the most surprising leadership lessons she's learned from Jeff Bezos — and how it completely shifted the way she thinks about influence, communication, and emotional intelligence in business. Drawing from Bezos' philosophy of "speaking last," Tracy explores how entrepreneurs and leaders can unintentionally silence creativity by leading every conversation with their own opinions. She shares why creating space for others to speak first can unlock innovation, psychological safety, honesty, and breakthrough ideas inside teams and families alike. This episode is a powerful reminder that true leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room. It's about listening deeply enough to hear the insights you would have otherwise missed. In This Episode, Tracy Shares: Why overwhelm and "drudgery" are signs it's time to delegate The leadership habit Jeff Bezos uses in meetings — and why it works How speaking first can unintentionally shape and limit team conversations Why the most junior person in the room may hold the most valuable insight The connection between leadership and emotional intelligence (EQ) How psychological safety creates innovation and truth-telling A real-life business example where listening saved millions in revenue A practical exercise to improve leadership, communication, and team dynamics this week Key Takeaways The strongest leaders don't dominate conversations — they create space for others to think, contribute, and rise. Tracy challenges entrepreneurs to rethink what leadership really looks like and offers a practical framework for becoming a more effective, emotionally intelligent leader by listening first and speaking last. Empowered Relationship Podcast: Your Relationship Resource And Guide
Are you stuck in a cycle of giving too much—or never quite feeling your needs are met—in your relationships? So many of us find ourselves trapped in unspoken agreements, repeating old patterns of imbalance, and wondering why our closest connections leave us feeling depleted and resentful. It's all too easy to slip into roles and routines that quietly erode intimacy, joy, and our sense of self. In this episode, listeners will discover the underlying dynamics of these "relationship contracts" and how they silently shape the balance (or imbalance) in our partnerships and friendships. Through insightful discussion, practical examples, and actionable tools, the conversation explores how to raise awareness of hidden patterns, reclaim personal agency, and foster healthier, more reciprocal connections—all while learning to have empowered conversations that turn resentment into collaboration and lasting growth. Elizabeth Webb is The Practical Priestess™ and an expert in positive psychology and human behavior. For over two decades, she's helped top leaders, celebrities, and change-makers break free from life's shackles, make empowered choices, and live a life they're excited to wake up to. Elizabeth brings her signature wisdom and wit to her debut book, Made for Magic. Episode Highlights 05:56 Spotting the early signs of relationship imbalance. 07:08 Resentment, overgiving, and the dynamics of reciprocity. 11:08 Lovability, self-worth, and patterns of giving and receiving. 16:11 Changing unhelpful contracts: Willingness, ability, and conscious relating. 21:20 Reflecting on past patterns: Awareness and co-creation. 25:59 Clarifying needs vs. preferences in relationship dynamics. 28:54 Strategies for addressing and rewriting unspoken agreements. 35:05 Understanding the root of complaints. 38:00 A roadmap for empowered communication and requests. 40:32 Building collaboration and navigating negotiation in relationships. 45:16 When to untether: Facing unmet needs and setting boundaries. Your Checklist of Actions to Take Reflect on your current or past relationships to notice any recurring patterns where you feel depleted or resentful due to an imbalance in giving and receiving. Ask yourself if your concern is a fundamental need or simply a preference before addressing it with your partner. Acknowledge the ways you have participated or co-created the current dynamic before approaching the other person. Choose a time when both parties are calm and receptive to discuss the issue, beginning by seeking consent for the conversation. Use neutral language to share your observations and feelings about the dynamic and avoid accusatory statements. Articulate exactly what you would like to change and how you would like it to look, so your partner understands what you need. Invite your partner to share their perspective or any adjustments they'd need to fulfill the new agreement, fostering a sense of co-creation. Observe whether your partner is both willing and able to make the necessary changes; if not, consider what choices and boundaries may be needed for your well-being. In this episode, we bring everything together and move into the how. After exploring what deep interests are and why forcing engagement backfires, we now look at how to actually incorporate a child's deep interests to support meaningful learning. If you've ever planned a thoughtful activity only to watch a child walk away, this conversation will help you shift how you approach teaching. Instead of trying to pull children into activities that don't feel meaningful to them, we explore how to bring learning into what they already love. This episode walks through practical ways to embed deep interests into everyday classroom and therapy activities without turning them into rewards or using them as leverage. When we make the interest part of the learning itself, engagement becomes more natural, regulation is supported, and skills begin to develop in a way that feels safe and connected In This Episode, You'll Learn • The difference between using interests as a reward vs embedding them into learning • How to take one deep interest and apply it across multiple skill areas • Ways to support matching, fine motor, language, and literacy using interests • Why meaningful materials increase engagement without increasing pressure • How to model language during play instead of relying on questions • The role of connection before introducing learning opportunities • How to start small without overhauling your entire classroom • Why structure and child-led learning can coexist • How to rethink centers and classroom setup through the lens of student interests • The importance of following a child's lead to build trust and participation Key Takeaways • Deep interests can become the learning activity, not a reward for completing it • The skill stays the same, the materials and approach shift • Engagement increases when learning feels meaningful and connected • Language develops through modeling inside play, not through pressure • One interest can support multiple developmental goals • Connection must come before instruction for learning to be effective • Small shifts in materials can create big changes in participation • Structure and predictability still matter within a child-led approach • Classrooms feel more supportive when interests are reflected in the environment • Learning becomes more sustainable when it is rooted in what a child loves When we stop separating learning from what a child enjoys, we create opportunities for skills to grow in ways that feel natural, engaging, and meaningful. Try This • Choose one child's deep interest and incorporate it in a familiar activity • Swap generic materials for items connected to what the child loves • Model language during play instead of asking questions • Join the child's activity without adding demands right away • Embed the interest into one routine, like centers or small group time • Observe how engagement changes when materials feel meaningful • Keep expectations simple and focus on connection first • Build from one small success instead of trying to change everything Often, the most impactful shift is not adding something new, but changing how we use what we already have. When learning is connected to a child's interests, engagement grows in a way that feels safe, supported, and lasting. Sharath Narayana, CEO and Co-Founder of Sanas, joins SlatorPod to talk about the evolution of real-time speech AI, the rise of accent harmonization, and why voice will become the next major enterprise interface.Sharath traces his journey from engineer to entrepreneur, including the founding of Observe.AI before launching Sanas alongside Stanford researchers focused on solving low-latency speech processing. The CEO explains that Sanas initially operated as a speech lab focused on improving human understanding in conversations. The company developed multiple algorithms covering noise cancellation, speech enhancement, accent harmonization, and language translation before discovering that enterprises were most willing to pay for accent-related technology.Sharath emphasizes that Sanas' accent technology is not designed to erase identity, but to improve clarity and reduce friction in customer interactions. He says enterprises, especially contact centers, adopted the technology to improve first-call experiences and reduce mistrust between agents and customers. He also discusses Sanas' focus on on-device AI infrastructure rather than cloud-only deployments, where running speech AI locally improves latency, protects data sovereignty, and lowers compute costs.Looking ahead, Sharath says Sanas is preparing broader launches for real-time language translation, universal accent translation, and developer SDKs that will allow third parties to build voice applications on top of the Sanas platform.

Love at Work: Aligning Leadership, Purposeful Growth, and the Brand from the Inside Out In this BrandsTalk episode, I got to interview Mark A. Mears—bestselling author, keynote speaker, and former C-level executive who led growth at brands including PepsiCo, McDonald's, NBC Universal, and The Cheesecake Factory—about his shift from traditional growth to purposeful, human-centered leadership and his second bestseller focused on bringing love back into the workplace. Mark explains his LOVE model as an acronym for Listen, Observe, Value, and Empower, linking it to low global engagement trends cited by Gallup and the need to transform command-and-control management into relational leadership that builds belonging. He outlines four interconnected “brands” (personal, internal, external, employer) and argues misalignment undermines experience and trust. The 5D Academy with Zarathustra explores universal wisdom to foster total freedom from suffering in all areas of your life; health, wealth, love, and self. The most impactful way to navigate life with ADHD is to shift your identity from a "disability deficit" mindset to a neuroaffirming, strength-based perspective. In this episode of Overcoming Distractions, Dave chats with Liz Ahmann and Micah Saviet, authors of the new book Flourishing with Adult ADHD (released April 2026). The discussion dives deep into practical, evidence-based strategies for high-performing professionals and entrepreneurs who are tired of temporary "hacks" and ready for long-term growth. They explore how understanding your unique brain wiring is the first step toward moving past the shame of a late diagnosis and toward true well-being. Key Discussion Points Hacks vs. Habits: Why temporary ADHD "hacks" often fail and how a deeper understanding of your specific "flavor" of ADHD leads to sustainable lifestyle changes. The Power of the Pause: Introducing the STOP practice (Stop, Take a breath, Observe, Proceed mindfully) to move from a reactive limbic state to a thoughtful executive state. Neuroplasticity in Action: How mindfulness and nature walks physically clear neural pathways and lower cortisol levels. Identity Re-calibration: Moving away from the "square peg in a round hole" mentality by embracing neurodivergence rather than trying to fix perceived weaknesses. Combating Shame: A look at the research-backed need for self-compassion and how it serves as a foundation for emotional regulation and resilience. Practical Growth Tools: Simple shifts like gratitude journaling, "micro-wins," and using the VIA (Values in Action) assessment to identify natural strengths. In this episode of the Joy Lab Podcast, Dr. Aimee Prasek and Dr. Henry Emmons dig into one of the most counterintuitive resilience skills we can build: turning toward negative emotions instead of running from them. This isn't about wallowing. It's about befriending the feelings that are already there so they can actually move through you, instead of getting lodged and piling up. We're talking fear (the emotion at the core of so many others), the science of emotions vs. feelings, why your emotional immune system needs exposure to develop, and three grounded steps (embody, observe, yield) to help you navigate the next emotional flurry before it becomes a blizzard. This one pairs beautifully with our Grief Series (starting at Episode 248) and our last episode on the observer self. Whether you're new to this work or deep in it, there's something here for you. Empowered Relationship Podcast: Your Relationship Resource And Guide
What if the key to lasting love wasn't just about finding the right person, but about growing the right partnership? Too often, couples step into long-term relationships without the relational tools, shared vision, or understanding of virtues that make for true unity. Instead of connection, misunderstandings and unresolved conflicts take root—leaving even the most committed couples wondering how to sustain harmony and joy in the face of life's everyday challenges. In this episode, listeners are guided through a practical roadmap for cultivating deeper unity within their relationships. Drawing on decades of experience and research, the conversation unpacks how virtues like respect, kindness, and flexibility serve as foundational elements to thriving partnerships. Listeners will hear about the stages of relational growth, learn tangible practices for resolving differences, and discover how to create a shared language and vision that brings them closer—not only to each other, but to a happier, more resilient family life. Susanne M. Alexander is a relationship and marriage educator and coach with her company, Marriage Transformation. She is certified to offer couples assessments and coaching through Prepare-Enrich® and for individuals with the Character Foundations Assessment™. Susanne has written/co-written over 30 books, including the most recent "Growing Our Unity: 19 Vital Practices for a Thriving Relationship". Susanne is co-lead on Accordia Way, a project that assists couples with excellent communication and decision-making skills. Episode Highlights 04:05 The Importance of character and virtues in relationships. 08:27 Developing and sustaining virtues: Tools, assessments, and early influences. 12:16 Virtues Project origins and the concept of unity as a relationship virtue. 15:33 Practicing unity without losing individuality. 17:54 The process of reaching unified decisions in relationships. 20:50 Navigating individualism and control dynamics in partnerships. 23:31 Balancing autonomy, collaboration, and flexibility. 27:49 The impact of unity on family, children, and community. 29:52 The 19 vital practices and applying virtues in everyday life. 35:11 Restoring connection and humor under relationship stress. 38:15 Consultation process: Detaching ego and co-creating solutions. 41:24 Symbolism in relationships and making unity a daily practice. Your Checklist of Actions to Take Schedule regular times to discuss important topics as a couple, allowing the conversation to flow naturally rather than treating it like a formal meeting. Identify and openly share your individual strengths and growth areas in relational virtues such as kindness, patience, and responsibility. Observe and assess your partner's demonstration of key virtues in various situations to gauge character compatibility and growth potential. Work on developing one or two virtues at a time rather than overwhelming yourselves with too many at once; focus on practical application each month. Prioritize unity during decision-making processes by listening to each partner's perspective and postponing decisions if mutual agreement isn't reached. Incorporate rituals or symbols (like a decorative bowl during conversations) to facilitate ego detachment and emphasize shared goals. Reflect as a couple on the integrity and unity of your relationship before individually committing to new community or family obligations. The 5D Academy with Zarathustra explores universal wisdom to foster total freedom from suffering in all areas of your life; health, wealth, love, and self. What if your child's long, winding stories are not a distraction from learning, but the very foundation of it?In this episode, we explore the art of narration: the natural ability children have to tell what they notice, remember, imagine, and understand. Inspired by Charlotte Mason and the astronauts of Artemis 2, we look at how vivid description, precise vocabulary, metaphor, and careful listening help kids turn experience into language. We also talk about oral narration, written narration, jot-it-down practices, observation, public speaking, and why parents can become a child's own Mission Control.Listen in, and let's learn how to say: Copy kid joy!Resources:Learn more about Brave Writer's Worldbuilding class and other enthusiasm-sparking online classes!Explore NASA's “Observe the Moon Like an Astronaut” activityFind our favorite readalouds and nonfiction in the Brave Writer Book ShopBrave Writer class registration is open! Your Checklist of Actions to Take Identify your sensory preference: Notice whether you primarily communicate and feel loved through visuals, sounds, or touch to better understand your relational needs. Observe your partner's style: Pay close attention to your partner's actions and language to discern their sensory preference for a more effective connection. Ask directly for what you need: Clearly articulate your needs and preferences to your partner rather than expecting them to guess. Use loving curiosity: When facing differences, express curiosity about your partner's viewpoint by asking, "Can you help me understand why you feel that way?" Move quickly to solutions: After establishing there is a difference of opinion, skip defending your side and collaboratively brainstorm potential solutions. Time your communication well: "Read the room" and only attempt important conversations or affectionate gestures when your partner is receptive. Check how your message lands: Take responsibility for making sure your communication is received as intended by observing your partner's response and adjusting as needed. Practice method acting in tough moments: Even if you're not "feeling it," act as if you are loving and confident during important conversations, allowing genuine feelings to follow your behavior. In this episode, we gently shift how we understand one of the most common challenges in classrooms and therapy spaces: low engagement. When a child walks away, refuses, shuts down, or pushes materials aside, it can feel confusing and frustrating, especially when you're trying to help them learn. But what if disengagement isn't defiance? This episode explores why forcing engagement through prompting, token systems, and increased demands often backfires, especially for autistic children whose nervous systems may already be overwhelmed. We walk through how traditional compliance-based approaches can unintentionally increase dysregulation and reduce trust, even when they are well-intentioned. Instead of focusing on how to get a child to participate, we reframe the question toward understanding what the child is communicating and what support they may need. You'll learn how to recognize disengagement as meaningful information, why regulation must come before learning, and how to shift toward connection-based strategies that actually support engagement over time. In This Episode, You'll Learn • Why disengagement is not defiance, but communication • What low engagement can look like across different children • Why increasing demands often leads to more resistance • How the nervous system responds to pressure (fight, flight, freeze) • What the "compliance trap" looks like in real classrooms • Why token boards and first-then systems can increase stress • The importance of presuming competence in every interaction • How ignoring communication can lead to escalation • Why regulation must come before participation • How deep interests can support meaningful engagement Key Takeaways • Disengagement is information, not a behavior problem • Pressure increases dysregulation, not participation • Fight, flight, and freeze are nervous system responses, not choices • Compliance-based strategies can unintentionally reduce trust • Communication should be honored in all forms • Regulation is a prerequisite for learning, not something to earn • Children would engage if they could, something is getting in the way • Deep interests provide a natural pathway into connection and learning • Small shifts in adult response can change the entire interaction • Connection builds engagement, not control When we stop trying to force engagement, we begin to understand it, and that's where meaningful learning starts. Try This • Pause instead of immediately prompting or redirecting • Ask what the child might be communicating in the moment • Observe signs of dysregulation before increasing demands • Lower the expectation to make the task feel doable • Replace questions with simple comments to reduce pressure • Sit beside the child and focus on connection, not performance • Follow the child's lead during play or interaction • Bring the child's deep interest into the activity instead of withholding it Often the most supportive shift is moving from control to curiosity. When we meet a child where they are, rather than pulling them toward compliance, engagement begins to grow in a way that feels safe, meaningful, and sustainable. In today's episode, we're wrapping up our three-part series on Antonio Vivaldi with a piece that feels both intimate and expressive—the Concerto for Two Violins in A Minor. If you've been listening along with this series, you already know how much I've loved exploring Vivaldi with you. Today's piece gives us something a little different from The Four Seasons—and it invites us to listen in a whole new way.
