What does it take to create one of the most abrasive, unsettling metal records of the 21st century? In this episode of Riff Worship, we dive into the shadows to dissect the terrifying sonic legacy of the UK's most elusive extreme music collective: Dragged Into Sunlight. Formed in 2006 by a group of anonymous DIY veterans, Dragged Into Sunlight have spent the last two decades weaponizing a volatile and uncompromising blend of sludge, death metal, black metal, and noise. Creating exclusively for themselves, the band permanently scarred the extreme music landscape with their 2009 landmark debut, Hatred for Mankind. This week we'll discuss:Dragged Into Sunlight's mysterious origins and their experimental, 19-minute long collaborative assault with Liverpool noise artist Kas Mana, Terminal Aggressor. The grueling, sleepless recording sessions of their debut album and the monolithic production made possible by legendary engineers Tom Dring (Corrupt Moral Altar) and Billy Anderson (Eyehategod, Melvins, Neurosis).Honoring the visceral, iconic, hand-drawn cover artwork by the late, brilliant Justin Bartlett. The band's infatuation with true crime, the cold reality behind their notorious serial killer samples, and the first-hand professional insight of working inside a Texas Death Row facility. From the pummeling riffs of ‘Boiled Angel' and ‘To Hieron' to the horrific ambience of ‘Totem of Skulls'—leave the hallway light on and join us as we celebrate a modern masterpiece of misery.Recommendations:Khann - ErodeU.S. Christmas - Run Thick In The NightFollow Riff WorshipInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/riffworshippod/Twitter: https://x.com/RiffWorshipPodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RiffWorshipPodCheck out our Official Playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Riffs on Repeat (YouTube Music)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)
Another awesome music segment, for me The Melvins.
The much-anticipated collaboration between grindcore legends Napalm Death and the legendary Melvins is here— but does it live up to the hype? Dive into a raw, candid breakdown of "Savage Imperial Death March," where the consensus seems to be that it's more Melvins than Napalm Death and it lacks the of aggression and the heavy dose of Napalm Death that may leave some fans of either band feeling disappointed. Check why this album feels more like a relaxed Melvins studio session than a true fusion of these intense acts, and why many believe it misses the mark on the velocity and bite expected from their legendary catalogs. Is 90% Melvins 10% Napalm Death a fair description? How does that impact the listening experience? Drop your comments down below! Why does this collaboration matter? Because in an era of safe, polished metal, the album's raw, unfiltered approach challenges your expectations of what a band like Napalm Death can or should do with a legendary outsider like the Melvins. If you're a fan craving innovation, or a metal purist expecting pure chaos, this might help you decide whether this record deserves a spot in your collection or if it's destined for the bargain bin.The guys also take a minute to talk about being a kid, and the importance of parents letting their kids just be kids. Youth and pure innocence is far too short and kids deserve the chance to get every second of it they can before they have to start dealing with adult issues!www.shittalkreviews.comSpotify - https://tinyurl.com/STR-SpotifyApple Podcasts - https://tinyurl.com/STR-Apple-Podcasts#melvins #napalmdeath #collaboration #ipecacrecords #grindcore #deathcore #earacherecords #savageimperialdeathmarchDrop us a line! This week a very mentally and physically burnt out Kayle and a mostly normal OJ listen to the completely bizarre collaborative album from Napalm Death and Melvins, Savage Imperial Death March.

Le disque réunit Green River, Soundgarden, Malfunkshun, Skin Yard, The Melvins et The U-Men. Welcome back to your weekly dose of Trve. Cvlt. Pop!, a music podcast. On this weeks show Steve and Gaz once again discuss which 4 artists get onto the Mount Rushmore of their own particular genre. On this episode we look at Grunge, Sophisti-pop and (what we have decided to christen) the mid-90's Reggae Revival. It's maybe the first time Melvins and Shaggy have shared the same space. What a win. There's also some chat on new albums from Converge, Silversun Pickups, Angel Du$t and more, chat about Maximo Park's recent show playing their debut album A Certain Trigger in full and a lost banger from Pet Shop Boys.
In which The Curmudgeons revisit the goofy yet ambitious and thrillingly original dawn of grunge music. Unbeknownst to some, the story of what became the dominant mainstream brand of rock 'n' roll in the 1990s dates back to 1984, back when the Seattle area was cold, rainy, gloomy and also a sleepy outpost that was surprisingly actually skipped by major artists of the time. So what you do you when no one's really watching and there isn't a whole lot to do? You mess around wiht your friends and bond over a love for 1970s classic rock, punk, metal, prog rock and other various forms of guitar-driven rock. And you started bands and shared ideas and worked to one up another in finding a way to meld all you loves into one sonic package. And that's exactly what the innovators of grunge did: found a sweet spot in between the fury of punk on the one hand and the grandeur and theatricality of metal on the other. Here. we discuss the first wave of bands that figuratively--and literally-put grunge on the map. We cover Green River, the Melvins, Soundgarden and more... We also analyze great albums from Green River, the Melvins and Sound Garden (59:02 - 01:18:41) - We analyze a number of great "grunge-adjacent" albums from Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and The Pixies. And we cover the last great volley from Green River before its members went on to found Mudhoney and Pearl Jam in later years. "Shine On" Formed in Seattle in the late '80s, Sweet Water got their start under the moniker SGM. Comprised of childhood friends from the private Bush School, which we talk about a lot in this episode, SGM played with Nirvana and The Melvins and their 1988 Aggression album was produced by Jack Endino and was lauded by Sub Pop's Bruce Pavitt. A thrashy blast of American post-punk SGM underwent a few lineup changes, recruited a few new members and re-named themselves Sweet Water. Their 1992 self-titled indie album got them signed to Atlantic where they put out another self-titled album. They moved to EastWest Records, put out the Superfriends record, which was a catchy blast of glam, grunge and hard rock and from there, things get a tad confusing. Legal issues held the band in abeyance, so they played under the name Parc Boys with a C, put out a record, went back to being Sweet Water, recorded an album that was supposed to come out on the Enclave label but didn't and instead was released independently. Sweet Water took a break and didn't put any new music out until their fabulous 2009 effort Clear The Tarmac. Since then, they've put out EPs like Dance Floor Kills and their brand new long player Shine On. An infectious, hook-filled album that's rife with melodic muscle and hooks galore, Shine On is a shimmering effort that proves Sweet Water just keep getting better. Now, I mentioned The Bush School and for good reason--that Seattle school is kind of the secret hero of the Sweet Water story and you'll see why in a second. I'll let the fellas tell you everything, but let me say this: when the foundational education is one that fosters artistic freedom, students feel like they can do anything because they're not self-conscious, they're deeply brave and they're not afraid to make bold strikes out there in the world. And Sweet Water has made a career out of doing that. www.sweetwaterrocks.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Everyone's a winner in this episode, well, almost - only one will get the coveted Bo Diddley Award. At pole position is the original version by The Turtles, who could be tough when they wanted to be. And it's also the original cowbell clanger! The second horse in the race came out the same year as the original and it's by The Sounds Like Us. We waltz around this one a bit with a crucial digression about Motley Crue's original singer. The Bangles 1981 demo of the tune comes down the track and shows no signs of slowing down - they capture the rush to the finish line of the original. Also-rans include The Total Rejection and The Melvins - will they place?

Rather than the traditional view of sequential lives, Siobhan proposes that our souls might be spread across different dimensions at the same time—explaining why some people seem naturally gifted at skills they've never formally learned. The conversation takes a captivating turn when Lala shares her experiences with unusually vivid dreams where she physically feels sensations that linger after waking. Could these dreams be glimpses into our parallel lives in other dimensions? We explore how this might explain déjà vu, unexpected talents, and even why some people feel they aren't living the life they're "supposed" to be living. This theory connects deeply with the multiverse concept, suggesting that perhaps what we imagine as fiction could be our soul's experience in another dimension. We also tackle the profound question of how we would live if we discovered this was our final incarnation. This leads to vulnerable reflections on fulfillment, purpose, and faith, as Lala opens up about her spiritual journey and the challenges of discovering her divine purpose. The discussion weaves through family dynamics, spiritual protection, and the delicate balance between independence and allowing others to help us. Whether you're a spiritual seeker, science fiction enthusiast, or simply curious about life's bigger questions, this conversation offers fresh perspectives on human existence and consciousness that will leave you questioning reality in the best possible way.Subscribe to Talk That Shit with the Melvins for more thought-provoking conversations that blend the spiritual with the everyday, and let us know your thoughts on parallel dimensions and reincarnation in the comments!Support the show

This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

The 1980s saw an explosion of independent record labels across the US, shaping the sound and spirit of underground music to this day. This week, Daniel House from Skin Yard and C/Z Records joins us as we dive into some of the finest labels whose DIY ethos, fearless experimentation, and raw energy broke away from the corporate music machine. One of the crucial American indie labels of the era was C/Z Records, the Seattle imprint that will forever be remembered as the second most important label in the burgeoning grunge scene. That being said, it was C/Z, not Sub Pop, who released the defining document of the new sound of the Pacific Northwest with 1986's Deep Six compilation - introducing Soundgarden, The Melvins, U-Men, Green River, Malfunkshun, and Skin Yard. Founded in 1985 by Chris Hanzek and Tina Casale, Skin Yard bassist Daniel House took over operation of C/Z in 1987, subsequently releasing music by Nirvana, Henry Rollins, Built To Spill, The Gits, Hammerbox, Presidents of the United States of America, 7 Year B---h, Coffin Break and many more. Skin Yard was a foundational band in the development of the grunge movement, not only due to the groundbreaking music they recorded between 1985 - 1991, but also the band members' other contributions to Seattle music. Aside from the aforementioned impact that House made with C/Z Records, guitarist Jack Endino would go on to produce and engineer some of the most enduring records of the era - including Nirvana's Bleach, and music by Mudhoney, Tad, Soundgarden, L7, and Screaming Trees. Lead singer Ben McMillan would form the band Gruntruck, and sadly passed away in 2008 at the age of 46. Drummer Matt Cameron is a world class musician who has been behind the kit for Soundgarden and, for the past 25 years, with Pearl Jam. Skin Yard Select is the brand new, limited collection of 14 songs loving curated by Daniel House and Jack Endino, culling tracks from their four studio albums, but also featuring enough rarities to please long-time fans. This beautiful package consists of seven individual 7" singles, each in their own sleeve and pressed on limited edition colored vinyl (or good ol' fashioned black). This week we're discussing Thunderball, the latest album by Melvins. Technically, this was released as Melvins 1983, which has the band's very first drummer, Mike Dillard, on drums instead of Dale Crover. Thunderball also features experimental musicians Void Manes and Ni Maitres lending electronic contributions. If you're a fan of the early 90s sludge era of Melvins, then this is the album for you. Let's face it. Most rock documentaries suck. But not BORN INNOCENT: THE REDD KROSS STORY. Why? Lots of reasons. There's the great music, of course. And the way it's sweet instead of cloying and self-effacing where it could be self-serving. But mostly? It's the joy of listening to two funny guys telling a good story that's worth hearing. Well, this week we have one of them on the show: Steven McDonald. A true lifer who's been doing it since he was eleven (ELEVEN?!?) — he also happens to be one of the best rock bassists out there (AND an all around swell guy). On this episode we talk to Steven about “Crazy Horses”, Moose lodges, his brother Jeff, misbegotten childhoods, runaways, THE Runaways, Black Flag, Rodney Bingenheimer, taking a beer can in the face for the Melvins, comparing notes with Tommy Stinson, Air Supply's gangster manager, and the I-told-you-so's of life.

Though Dale is known as the long-time drummer for Washington sludge-metal band Melvins ('88-present), he's also a guitarist and singer who led the band Altamont though four alternative rock albums ('97-'05) and has now released his third full-length, stylistically varied solo album. We discuss "I Quit" from Glossolalia (2024), "Bad Move" from The Fickle Finger of Fate (2017), and "The Bit" by Melvins from Stag (1996). End song: "El Stupido" by Altamont from The Monkees' Uncle (2005). Intro: "Spread Eagle Beagle" by Melvins from Houdini (1993). More at dalecrover.com. Hear more Nakedly Examined Music.
