Jessica Bennett has spent her award-winning journalism career focusing a gender lens on social issues and culture — from the persistence of workplace inequality, to cultural trends like Playboy magazine to rebrand and the evolution of Miss America, to the ripple effects of #MeToo. She was the first-ever gender editor of The New York Times and is the author of two bestselling books, Feminist Fight Club: A Survival Manual for a Sexist Workplace (HarperCollins) and This Is 18: Girls' Lives Through Girls' Eyes (Abrams). She is an adjunct professor of journalism at NYU. Fun fact: She once wrote a viral piece about her Resting Bitch Face. In 2021 Jessica wrote a piece that I have been thinking about since then. It was title, Speaking of Britney … What About All Those Other Women? Monica Lewinsky. Janet Jackson. Lindsay Lohan. Whitney Houston. We are living in an era of reappraisals. It questioned if we were rethinking how we treated the the “wild" girls of the 90's and 2000's—Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, Monica Lewinsky. We break it down and discuss how we are treating women in the media today and what that means for how we see ourselves and each other. Series 9 has landed! Our first guest is Cyrill Gutsch, the fascinating founder of Parley for the Oceans. With his partner Lea Stepken, this NY-based designer and branding expert started his global environmental organisation in 2012, after bumping into Pamela Anderson at an art fair. Pammy was wearing a Sea Shepherd T-shirt, and when Cyrill asked her why, she told him Sea Shepherd's activist-in-chief Paul Watson was in trouble - he'd been arrested in Frankfurt on an international warrant. Cyrill, being German, thought he might be able to help, and went to visit Watson in his lawyer's office. There, he learned that Watson's strife was a drop in the proverbial compared with what's happening to the oceans. Plastic pollution! Climate change! Overfishing! Could creativity be the super power needed to turn it around? The rest, as they say is history. Cyrill decided to ditch his regular clients, and donate his time to just one: OUR OCEANS. Specifically, “raising awareness for their beauty and fragility” and “collaborating on projects [to] end their destruction.”Over the years, such projects have included: working with Adidas to phase out single-use plastics; partnering with big-name visual artists on everything from underwater sculptures to sustainable surfboards; funding research into new materials; and setting up programs in schools. On a practical level, Parley's work is just as likely to play out as beach cleanups in the Maldives as it is to be a new Dior bag. It's all in the mix, to beat what Cyrill calls “our addiction” to virgin plastic.Next on his To-Do List? Just a total materials revolution. “We need to change the way we make stuff.”Check out the shownotes on wardrobecrisis.comCan you help us spread the word about Series 9? Earlier this year, she decided to take back authorship of her life with a memoir (“Love, Pamela”) and Netflix documentary (“Pamela, A Love Story”). What do Poolside FM and Isamaya Beauty have in common? Their founders have created brands with unique yet relatable identities. Background: Isamaya Ffrench, makeup artist and founder of Isamaya Beauty, and Marty Bell, co-founder of sunscreen brand Vacation (and Poolside FM), both took unconventional routes to turning their products into veritable brands. Vacation began as a spinoff of the internet radio station inspired by summer tunes of the 1980s, Meanwhile, Ffrench's brand sparked attention for her new Lips line's penis-shaped lipstick cases. Bold and risky in equal measure, these moves laid the groundwork for their businesses while giving their brands personalities and spark.“If you're strong enough to have a vision and get a brand off the ground, you know what your audience wants,” said Ffrench. “Do the things that feel natural and right, because it's when you start doing the things that the CMO tells you you have to do and you feel awkward about it… no one's going to want your product because it doesn't look authentic.”This week on The BoF Podcast, Bell and Ffrench speak with BoF founder Imran Amed about the power of brand building and how founders can inject their own personalities into their products to make them recognisable and memorable.Key Insights:Ffrench advises founders to scrutinise conventional wisdom about how to launch a brand rather than trusting their instincts and vision. “It's really about taking things [advice] with a pinch of salt, but following your gut and your spirit and doing what feels right for you and your brand,” she says. According to Bell, people gravitate towards brands that are a reflection of their founders' personalities and beliefs. “Some of the best brands in the early stages are just true personifications of their founders… That's very hard to compete with if you don't have someone who has a view on the world and a perspective,” Bell explains. Ffrench believes large beauty corporations struggle creating an authentic brand identity because they focus on numbers rather than forming a connection with customers. “You lose the essence, you lose the integrity and the artistry because that takes time and money and spirit,” Ffrench observes. Bell says the key to creating an authentic brand is finding an idea or aesthetic you're interested in and creating the product line around it. “If you're not deeply passionate about the world that you're going to build [with your brand], you need to find someone who can be obsessive,” Bell says.Additional Resources:The Business of Beauty Global Forum: How Do We Create Connection? Women face numerous barriers when trying to achieve many things in life, but when they enter politics, those gender biases and stereotypes go up to a whole new level. From discrimination and harassment, both online and offline, to traditional gender roles and societal expectations, to media focus on female politicians' appearance, when women enter politics their experience is completely different - and much more challenging - to that of their male counterparts. In Australia recently, there's been a lot of focus on gender bias and inequality in government at all levels and what's become obvious is that women are much better represented in the Labor Party than in the Liberal Party. This is mainly due to the work of EMILY's List. EMILY's List was originally started in the US in 1985 by activist Ellen Malcolm that aims to help elect Democratic female candidates in favour of abortion rights to office. EMILY's List Australia was founded in 1996 by Leonie Morgan and its founding members include Joan Kirner and Australia's first (and only) Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. Join me in conversation with the CEO of EMILY's List Australia, Pamela Anderson, as we discuss the unique challenges aspiring female (and minority) politicians face and what support is needed and given to help overcome those challenges. We also have a good conversation about why it's so important that our government representatives are a true reflection of society and the different kinds of misogyny that women face in the workplace today. Because ultimately, achieving gender equality in political representation is not just a matter of fairness; it is a prerequisite for creating a truly democratic and inclusive society. Filmmaker Ryan White (“Good Night Oppy”, “The Keepers”) had no desire to make a documentary about ‘90s superstar Pamela Anderson. Not when the idea was first brought to him, anyway. But then, Pamela's son urged him to at least meet his mother on Zoom. And that was all it took. Ryan quickly realized that the media image of Pamela as a two-dimensional blonde bombshell and attention-driven celebrity was not at all an accurate picture of the complex, intelligent, and funny person he would get to know while filming what became Ryan's highly engaging new documentary “Pamela, a love story”. Making a return visit to Top Docs, Ryan describes how vastly different his experience was making “Pamela” from his last film “Good Night Oppy”. What was it like for Ryan to have Pamela turn over her entire personal archive of diaries and videotapes and empower him to decide how to use them? How did Pamela's spontaneous nature create the kind of atmosphere on set where anything could happen? And how did Ryan navigate the difficult waters of the Pamela and Tommy Lee sex tapes, which he knew had to be addressed, but which would likely bring up painful memories for Pamela? “Pamela” is a totally refreshing portrait that explores the many sides of love. Thank goodness for that Zoom call. “Pamela, a love story” is currently streaming on Netflix. Jess and Jaimi both saw the same viral video, and the thousands of hateful comments underneath, and decided to bring it to the podcast to discuss it over a few vodkas. What has a 22 year old pilot got in common with Millie Bobby Brown, Billie Eilish, and Pamela Anderson? Tune in to find out!

There's a very good chance we wouldn't have had this long a conversation if we were covering the actual Casablanca. Instead, we're covering a riff on Casablanca that landed terribly with most critics. Was it a reaction to its star, Pamela Anderson? A reaction to its silly, hypersexual tone? A reaction to how it predicted things going to hell in 2017? More importantly though, this is where you find out if we really liked the movie. At The Business of Beauty Global Forum 2023, Pamela Anderson shared her perspectives on how the definition of beauty — and the beauty business — is changing with Moj Mahdara. Background: “We're all trying to make ourselves beautiful so we are respected, admired, loved. So these products have to come from a loving place. That's the secret ingredient: having heart,” said Pamela Anderson at The Business of Beauty Global Forum 2023 in Napa Valley, California. This week on The BoF Podcast, Anderson and Moj Mahdara, managing partner and co-founder of Kinship Ventures and co-founder of BeautyUnited, discuss sustainable beauty products, shame and her own beauty and wellness journey. Key Insights:Anderson's early experiences with beauty go back to her time at the Playboy Mansion, surrounded by beautiful women who were in charge of their own sexuality. There, watching and learning from powerful women, the former Baywatch star was able to grasp her own femininity. “And I just watched. And I want it to be sexy, too. I found that was powerful and interesting,” said Anderson. The beauty industry has been known to shame women for being older and has consistently pushed an anti-ageing agenda. Anderson believes older women shouldn't chase youth. “I like embracing our age, embracing looking as good as we can, but also being realistic.”Shame and insecurities caused by the beauty industry and Western beauty standards were recurring topics at BoF's Global Beauty Forum. According to Anderson, she moves past humiliation with poise. “Grace and dignity no matter what: you hold your head high. Everyone has gone through things that are embarrassing or difficult, but we're all just people,” said Anderson.Anderson imparted one last piece of wisdom to the room of beauty creatives and innovators. “I'm just this imperfect girl from start to finish who wants to do her part and be a good person in the world and share my story,” said Anderson.Additional Resources:The Business of Beauty Global Forum: How Do We Create Connection? During BoF's first Global Beauty Forum, Pamela Anderson, Isayama Ffrench and Glossier chief executive Kyle Leahy discussed how brands could better capture attention and secure lasting relationships with customers in an oversaturated beauty market. Lessons From Day One of The Business of Beauty Global Forum. Speakers including John Legend and TooD Beauty founder Sharareh Siadat laid out their vision for a more inclusive beauty industry during the first session of The Business of Beauty Global Forum. The Business of Beauty Global Forum: Where Will Growth Come From? Filmmaker Ryan White has made a dizzying array of unique documentaries, including “The Keepers,” about the unsolved murder of a Catholic nun, “The Case Against 8” about the fight for marriage equality, “Good Night Oppy,” which traces the journey of NASA's Mars Rover and “Assassins,” about the murder of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un's half-brother. The Emmy-nominated director's latest project, “Pamela, A Love Story,” is a raw look at the life of 90's bombshell Pamela Anderson. It showcases a more vulnerable side of the actress and re-examines the major life events of the star – from her rise to fame to the infamous, stolen sex tape with her then-husband, Tommy Lee. Alec speaks with Ryan White about what he learned filming with Anderson, the impact the documentary had on her life and how he balances the light and the dark of his projects.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Alan Altshuld, From Advertising to Aliens Alan Altshuld has not done many interviews before, and even fewer about his time on Star Trek, where he performed four times in two different series. This veteran has spent considerable time in the theater and in TV commercials, along with his work on shows and movies, which I'm excited to share with you now. Alan told us about how he got discovered by Jeri Taylor to make his first Star Trek appearance in TNG, the deceptively complicated makeup job for that "Starship Mine" role, getting physical with Jonathan Frakes, and eating weird sci-fi food on "The Gambit." After TNG, we learn about his pair of "Star Trek: Voyager" credits, including crawling on his hands and knees to please his Ferengi overlords in "False Profits" and performing as a strange Catati alien in "Day of Honor" with serious makeup constraints that caused him to alter his methods. Plus, find out which major Trek role Alan was under serious consideration for! Beyond Star Trek, learn about Alan's connection to Walter Koenig through the theater world, the unique curriculum he learned early on about the practical side of being an actor along with the horrors of the infamous "NY Audition" class, some of his notable commercial roles including being a part of the Vegetarian society in a famous Little Caesar's pizza ad, his time on Baywatch being tied up with Pamela Anderson, and working with Tom Hanks in "The Money Pit" driving a Volkswagen Beetle that no one could see out of! Naz is off traveling the world for work, so Lauren an Ashley called in their go to fill-in cohost, fan favorite, Feminist Liz. We're gonna be honest. This one is high energy, and we don't necessarily get to a ton of I Don't Get Its, but that's just because we had so much other stuff to cover in our hour with Liz, from some of the most ridiculous reality shows of decades past (remember The Pick Up Artist and Daisy of Love??) to the best celebrity memoir audiobooks (Liz recommends Pamela Anderson's book), to all of the Taylor Swift / Matty Healy news. Lauren and Lizzie try to get Ashley up-to-date on current TikTok trends and slang (almond moms don't just drink almond milk), and Liz breaks down all the romance tropes for Ashley and Lauren. She also recounts a date she went on that really tested her feminist leanings. We recorded this one late on a weekend night, so it's got major sleepover vibes. Big Jay Oakerson joins Adam, Chris, and Jessimae Peluso. The three chat about warehouses, human trafficking, and Pamela Anderson. This leads into a discussion about sex tapes and the group's earliest memories of finding porn. The gang then laughs about various methods of maintaining one's vehicle before Adam finds a way to complain about ceiling fans and milk frothing wands. Big Jay then tells a story about David Schwimmer and Gwyneth Paltrow. The podcast resumes from backstage at Adam's live show in Fresno. Chris reports the news, starting with a story about a San Jose police union executive being involved in an international opioid smuggling operation. The guys then chat about a teacher fired for having his students write their own obituaries and a man arrested for burglarizing Michael Jordan's mansion. Adam then talks about seeing the movie ‘Air' and the guys revisit the story of how Michael Jordan's father was murdered. Lastly, the two talk about a Texas citizen shooting the man who stole his car after using an Apple AirTag to locate it. PLUGS: Watch Big Jay Oakerson's new special Dog Belly on YouTube now!
