Remarkable Retail
Retail Renaissance: A Conversation with Barrie Scardina, President, Americas Retail Services at Cushman & Wakefield

Remarkable Retail

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2025 44:32

The episode, recorded live at Shoptalk in the Berns Communications Group media room, opens with Steve Dennis and Michael LeBlanc surveying a broad sweep of headline-grabbing developments in the retail world. They highlight continued uncertainty around recently imposed tariffs and resulting economic ripples, as major international trade disputes stoke inflationary concerns. Stock market volatility factors heavily into the conversation, with the co-hosts noting how certain retail sectors—particularly home furnishings and high-end goods—may feel the pinch as shoppers tighten budgets.  Target's declining foot traffic draws focus as the hosts weigh whether brand controversies or stiff competition might be to blame. Next meet Barrie Scardina, President, Americas Retail Services at Cushman & Wakefield, who brings a fresh perspective born of decades in the retail industry. Her vantage point on commercial real estate challenges the traditional narrative of a “retail apocalypse.” She explains how, despite headlines about store closings, overall U.S. vacancy rates are incredibly low—largely because new construction has slowed and new types of tenants (from wellness providers to entertainment concepts) are snapping up available space. Barrie describes a rising tide of “experiential” retail, with everything from boutique fitness and medtail services to immersive brand pop-ups fueling a renewed sense of purpose in physical locations. She underscores how mixed-use developments and adaptive reuse—especially of outdated mall anchor spots—are revitalizing communities and increasing foot traffic. By blending residential, office, dining, and retail, these centers offer a lifestyle-oriented experience that resonates with modern shoppers. Ultimately, Barrie's insights challenge conventional wisdom, suggesting that success in retail real estate hinges on tapping into evolving consumer demands, fostering a community connection, and creating spaces that balance function with memorable experience. AboutBarrie Scardina joined global real estate solutions firm Cushman & Wakefield as Executive Managing Director and Head of Retail Services, Americas, in November of 2019, leading brokerage teams to deliver optimal solutions to retailers and brands. In 2022, Barrie was elevated to the role of Regional President, Northeast, leading brokerage and services across all service lines. In 2023, she took on the challenge of President of Americas Retail Services, Agency Leasing and Alliances, partnering across office, industrial and retail to provide nuanced client solutions. Barrie is consistently focused on delivering value to clients by serving as a trusted advisor and incorporating data, analytics, and business valuation as part of her strategies. This unique approach to client relationships ensures that the firm delivers against client goals, optimizing outcomes and mitigating risk. Barrie is results-oriented and remains focused on transforming the real estate landscape by strategically driving revenue, identifying operational efficiencies, and growing profitability. Prior to her appointment at Cushman & Wakefield, Barrie spent three decades leading vital retail initiatives across a variety of world-class organizations, including Polo Ralph Lauren, Liz Claiborne, The Children's Place and Tory Burch. She brings more than 15 years of executive experience to her current role with the firm, including expertise in creating long-range strategies, business forecasting, omni-channel inventory management, and system implementation and integration. Most recently, Barrie was with Calvin Klein, where she led the company's North American Retail Division as President, setting strategic direction for merchandising, consumer experience and operational improvements. Throughout her career, Barrie has focused on mentoring and developing talent and creating cultures that foster collaboration and equality. More and more in today's fashion industry, women are the ones in charge and designing for themselves instead of for some unrealistic societal ideal. Kimberly Becker is doing this and going a step further for women's rights with her brand K. Becker. In episode 111, hear how politics, feminism, and sustainability guide her work and how she's using fashion to give back to causes that support women across the globe. Kimberly started this journey as a Textile Major at RISD. After graduating, she worked in the garment district of Manhattan for about a decade off and on – beginning at Liz Claiborne, and then moving to upholstery fabric design, always focused on designing the fabrics. Kimberly's time at Liz Claiborne gave her priceless experience, both about how the business was run and also in getting exposure to the suppliers and manufacturers from around the world. Fast forward 25 years and she is creating art focused on women's rights. Her House Dresses and Dolls for Change were both discussions about how women are still facing an uphill battle in the world. Someone asked her why she wasn't designing clothing. They loved the way the dolls Kimberly was making were dressed. It took about 6 months for Kimberly to find the courage to try. That decision was life-changing. She's one year in and the brand is settling into the collection and message she feels fits what she was aiming for. K.Becker is a collection of sustainable pretty things that fit and flatters real women's bodies. Empowering women is vital. When we feel beautiful we are a force. All clothing is sewn in NYC, and knit in Brooklyn and the company is an all-women team. Kimberly donates 5% of all profits to women-focused causes. In this episode, you'll learn: The two sides of feminism in fashion and where Kimberly sees both in the industry today How politics and women's rights activism sparked the idea for K. Becker Why Kimberly moved away from describing her brand as petite The thing that Kimberly asks her focus groups of women to bring The balance between being too corporate and too personal as a brand The core message and values that guide K. Becker How Kimberly met her factory and patternmaker The importance of consistency Why Kimberly doesn't like to use blended fiber materials How Kimberly's background in textiles influences her fabric and apparel design decisions People and resources mentioned in this episode: K. We discussed a few things including:1. Kay's career journey2. The startup/funding landscape, particularly for women3. Springboard accelerator and thesis4. Trends, challenges and opportunities re new ventures and fundingKay Koplovitz is the founder and former Chairman & CEO of USA Networks, the SyFy Channel and USA Networks International, a multi-billion-dollar cable program company. Ms. Koplovitz ran the network for 21 years before stepping down in 1998, at which time it was sold for $4.5 billion. She is the visionary who created the business model for cable networks by introducing the concept of two revenue streams: licensing and advertising, adopted worldwide. It all started with her insatiable curiosity about satellite communications, a concept she first heard from author Arthur C Clark and his work on geosynchronous orbiting satellites. It was the introduction of satellite distribution into the cable industry that launched an industry. In 1998, then-President Clinton appointed Kay to chair the bipartisan National Women's Business Council (NWBC). Her research found that $104 billion in venture capital went over the transom, but only 1.7 percent went to women. VCs in Silicon Valley told Kay they had never seen any women come to pitch them. It was time to open the door to VC capital and bring women in. By 2000, Kay was compelled to launch Springboard Enterprises, which she co-founded as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) accelerator that propels women-led companies in technology and life sciences to raise capital, now powered by a community of over 5,000 industry specific experts. They lift them to scale and sustainability with access to capital, business partnerships and an entrusted global community. In 2014, Ms. Koplovitz co-founded the New York Fashion Tech Lab (NYFTL.com), bringing promising technology companies in collaboration with the fashion and consumer retail industry. Today they are leading Ai technology integration in Retail. In its 25 th anniversary year, Kay continues as Chairman of Springboard Enterprises, where, under her leadership, the organization's mission is to present and connect essential resources to over 930+ Springboard entrepreneurs. The measure of its success is in the results. A strong 25-year track record validated the value of Springboard Enterprises' alumnae, totaling $61 Billion in value since its launch, with 237 exits to strategic acquirers and 28 IPOs.  In 2016, Ms. Koplovitz co-founded Springboard Growth Capital to bring growth-stage investments to women-led companies, building iconic brands with the digital consumer in mind and a path to profitability in sight. She previously served on corporate boards of CA Technologies, Time Inc., Liz Claiborne, Kate Spade, ION Media Networks, Oracle, Instinet, Nabisco, General Re, and over 25 years as trustee on the nonprofit boards of The Paley Center for Media and the International Tennis Hall of Fame.#podcast #AFewThingsPodcast

Robin also tells us about their unique citizensOf campaign and how it is helping them integrate into communities, as well as their partnership with World Bicycle Relief and how they encourage their guests to participate in impactful ESG initiatives. Robin Chadha is the Amsterdam-based Chief Marketing Officer of citizenM, where he leads the Brand & Communications team. Robin is half Indian, half Dutch, and was educated in American schools his entire life, giving him a deep understanding and appreciation for different cultures from a young age. He spent his first year after graduation on the floor of the NYSE and did another year in the offices, but knew it wasn't the place for him. He made the move into fashion by joining Tommy Hilfiger in New York, where he fell in love with the industry. He then moved back to the Netherlands to join his father's fashion company, Mexx, but left shortly after it was sold to Liz Claiborne. In 2005, Robin entered hospitality by launching Rain, a unique design-led food and drink experience venue in Amsterdam. Robin has always had a passion for travel, so he sold Rain in 2008 to join the budding citizenM team, where he has since been responsible for growing citizenM into the worldwide, distinctly recognizable hotel and lifestyle brand it is today.citizenM was founded by Robin's father, Rattan Chadha, and opened its first hotel at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in 2008. When Rattan ran Mexx, he saw his designers traveling the world unable to find affordable luxury hotels to stay in, so they became the pioneers in affordable luxury with a focus on emotional connections, efficiencies, and experiences. Today, citizenM owns and operates 30 hotels in most major cities across the world. I've gone from creating something that millions of people around the world will want, to creating something that is individual to the woman who wears it. -Betsy Ferg Wood In the spotlight, Betsy Ferg Wood. She spent much of her career focused on brand identity and product design where job #1 was to communicate the essence of major brands to consumers worldwide. She was living large…from New York, City to L.A, from London to Paris, working for Liz Claiborne, and was even a part of the legendary Barbie Team at Mattel. But at some point, Betsy felt like she needed to make a change and flex her artistic muscles a bit more independently. The daughter and grandchild of artists, she had that gene in spades and started creating story necklaces out of mementos, trinkets, treasures, buttons, and charms. It wasn't long before Jewelry Bee Social www.jewelrybeesocial.com was born by taking recycled pieces and making them new again. To Betsy's surprise, the connections her story necklaces have made bring a whole new shine to each unique creation. #jewelryBee #mementostrinketsandtreasures #storyjewelry #madeintn #storynecklaces #charmbraceletsonsteroids #tellyourstoryinjewelry

Welcome to the Woman in Tech Series from the Global Tech Leaders Podcast. Today we are speaking to Janelle Raney, the Chief Marketing Officer at Pathlight. She has had an illustrious career in organisations like Citrix and Zoom and is now at Pathlight as a CMO. She worked in product marketing, analytics, market strategy, positioning, and launching PR. She has a degree in Mathematics and an MBA from NYU. We kick off by asking Janelle to share her career journey and what has led her to where she is today. She went to Vanderbilt University as a bio-medical engineer after 1 year switched to arts and science and became a Math Major. After graduating she moved to New York and worked for Liz Claiborne, in the fashion industry, and joined the management training program. She fell in love with marketing there, especially the data creativity side and while there she attended NYU. She got a degree in Marketing and Finance. Took a year off and travelled to decide what is next, moved to San Francisco to get into the tech industry and worked for a company called QRS. From there got married, had kids and started her own business. From there she went to Citrix. Zoom came knocking on her door and became an awesome team before everyone knew Zoom. She loves startups, and this brought her to Pathlight and they were solving a big problem. We then ask Janelle why she decided to go to San Francisco instead of the Wall Street trend after NYU. The opportunity to be creative in tech, especially as a woman. She loves innovation! We ask Janelle what she feels they got right from a cultural perspective at Zoom. She remembers having a meeting where they discussed establishing the values of the company and the CEO Eric, it was care. It comes down to the principles, Eric cared passionately. They had an outage once, he took it personally and Eric moved from his corner office to a cubicle on the engineering floor and stayed there for months and was a servant leader. Then we ask Janelle, regarding the woman in tech, what she feels has changed around inclusion. More women are graduating than men right now but it's not fully levelled. It starts with equal pay. Companies perform better with diversity. Paternity leave. Know your worth in the market. Next, we ask Janelle, what can we do as leaders to progress and promote the inclusion of genders? Salesforce reviews this annually and has done a stellar job. Diversity of thought. Working Moms. We move on to asking Janelle, what advice she would give to young women wanting to get into tech. Personal branding, how are you showing up and building networks? Don't just report, bring your thoughts and all of what makes you unique. Make sure you're getting credit for your successes. Next, we ask Janelle how important is it for men to be a support system for women. Her husband is the home chef. Find your home balance. Then we ask Janelle to share more on dyslexic thinking as we see it on her profile. Richard Brandson, speaks about it. The way they think is different. We then ask Janelle to share more about Pathlight and what are they doing. Pathlight empowers frontline employees. Health score. Performance intelligence platform. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gloabl-tech-leaders/message

In My Heart with Heather Thomson

Dorinda Medley is an Entrepreneur and TV personality. She is a long time member of RHONY and recently RHUGT season 2 based at her home Blue Stone Manor in the Berkshires. She is very involved in her favorite charities and in 2021 released her auto biography Make It Nice. Born in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, Dorinda graduated from college and arrived in New York City, working in the showrooms of Liz Claiborne. She met her first husband and followed him to London to start a family and eventually her own cashmere company, DCL Cashmere. Many high-profile London clients like Princess Diana and Joan Collins became acquaintances, and soon, Dorinda left her mark on London society. Ten years in London also brought her a daughter, Hannah, a divorce, and a wish to return to New York to figure out life in the city as a single mom. In 2005, Dorinda met and married financier Dr. Richard Medley, a former Washington power broker and respected speechwriter to congresswoman and vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, and together they worked on fund-raising for charitable causes with the likes of Bishop Desmond Tutu, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Secretary Madeline Albright, and President Bill and Secretary Hillary Clinton. After the tragic loss of their beloved Richard in 2011, Dorinda and Hannah found strength in each other and in their loved ones to overcome the radical changes of losing a husband, friend, companion, and father figure. Through perseverance and support from her close friends, Dorinda climbed right back to the top of New York society. Dorinda is always directing her energy and focus into her home, family and friends, church, social engagements, and love for pop culture. In 2019, Dorinda reignited her passion for teaching aerobics, creating and touring with her interactive workout class Dorobics to great success. She continuously gives back to her favorite charitable organizations like Ali Forney Center, Born This Way Foundation, Prevention, Joy.J Initiative, Ronald McDonald House, NYLovesKids.org and Gabrielle's Angel Foundation. Dorinda's passion for entertaining was deeply enhanced with the purchase of Blue Stone Manor, a nine-bedroom Stanford White estate in her native Great Barrington. With a recent flood at the estate, Dorinda was forced to renovate and restore the historic property to get it back to its former glory. Nothing gives Dorinda more pleasure than a weekend or holiday spent with great company, home-cooked meals, and the festive, personal touches she is known for. She enjoys the theater, the beach, the mountains, fabulous parties, a great dirty martini, and all types of fashion—both high-end and high-street—and considers all of her pieces collector's items.  Hiya Vitamins: Get 50% off first order of children's vitamins. I don't know how long it was between the first human inventing the first god and then coming up with the first devil but I'd bet you could count it in minutes. We look at some of the hoaxes where Satan has been thrown into the mix to maximize harm and or profit. Like the persistent rumors' that various company CEO's like McDonald's founder Ray Croc and fashion designer Liz Claiborne have appeared on Phil Donahue, The Jenny Jones Show, Sally Jesse Raphael and Oprah professing their love of the devil admitting to donating company money to Anton LeVay's Church of Satan!Household goods company Proctor & Gamble have been battling an urban legend that paints the company as a conduit for Beelzebub for over 50 years now! What makes this hoax interesting is not the overly stimulated pattern recognition mind and wilful ignorance of your average conspiracy theorist but WHO kept it alive. We'll look at ridiculous claims about non-alcoholic grape juice in the Bible by temperance fundamentalists Al and Alice Lunden and how the Prince of Darkness himself has misguided the Catholic Church in its transubstantiation rituals. And we'll hear from corporate copywriter and Electronic Voice Phenomenon pundit Roderick Millington who claims to have Old Scratch's voice on tape! We'll also mention, Jim, Dan and Steve Peters of the Zion Christian Life Center in Minnesota, problematic columnist, author, commentator and former Alice Cooper roadie, Bob Greene, Multi Level marketing company Amway and pasteurization innovator and hero of the Underground Railroad, Thomas Bramwell Welch.

A born entrepreneur, Deirdre Quinn's early love of the craft inspired a degree in fashion design. Her passion for production and merchandising led her to Donna Karan, Escada, and Liz Claiborne, where she traveled to more than seventy countries. In 1996, she joined forces with two other fashion veterans and visionaries, Shun Yen Siu and Ida Siu, to found Lafayette 148 New York, creating one of the very rare, vertically integrated fashion brands. More than twenty years later, Deirdre's boundless drive to discover what's next continues to lead the brand towards the future, including the move to a soaring, sustainably built loft space in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. A member of the Fashion Institute of Technology and The Brooklyn Hospital Center's Board of Trustees, Deirdre has a lifelong love of learning and a devotion to philanthropy and enriching the world through education. What you'll learn about in this episode: How Deirdre built an incredible vertically integrated fashion brand Deirdre's success journey in the fashion industry Why it is just as important to figure out what you don't want to do in life as it is to find your calling Deirdre's perspective on how to deal with adversity as a business leader The difficult transition Deirdre had to make as she built the Lafayette 148 brand How Deirdre has navigated the challenges of the global pandemic Resources: Website: https://www.lafayette148ny.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deirdre-quinn-60b828123/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/lafayette-148-new-york/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lafayette148ny Twitter: https://twitter.com/lafayette148ny Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lafayette148ny/ Becoming a Fashionpreneur Deirdre Quinn is the founder of Lafayette 148 New York, one of the very rare vertically integrated clothing brands in the fashion epicenter of the United States. More than twenty years after Lafayette's inception, Deirdre's boundless drive to discover what's next continues to lead the brand towards the future. She is also a member of the Fashion Institute of Technology and The Brooklyn Hospital Center's Board of Trustees, where she fulfills a lifelong love of learning, devotion to philanthropy, and passion for enriching the world through education. In this episode of the Intentional Greatness podcast, Deirdre joins us to share her incredible journey as a kickass entrepreneur in the fashion industry. Finding Your Calling It doesn't happen all the time, but Deirdre was lucky enough to build a career around her lifelong passion. With the unwavering support of her mother, she made her way through fashion school and began taking steps to realize her vision. So many lessons came out of Deirdre's journey, and one thing we can take away from her is this: it is just as important to know what you don't want to do as it is to know what you want to do. It often takes countless failures to find your calling in life, but your failures are never in vain. When you can use adversity to guide you toward the light, you will realize you've been on the right path all along. No Turning Back When Deirdre ended her tenure with DKNY and Liz Claiborne, her portfolio of experience was immensely diverse. She was finally ready to pursue her own venture and began shaping the Lafayette 148 New York brand. By no means has it ban an easy road, but Deirdre has been an exceptional leader in the face of adversity. She has not faltered or given up ground, and no matter what challenges are thrown her way, Deirdre stays determined to figure them out. You pick what you wanted to do for a living, so you have to go through everything that comes with it. You can't throw in the towel just because things are getting tough. Deirdre's story is proof that any one of us can persevere no matter what the circumstances look like.

In this episode, Noel is Joined by Annette Davidson of the Chef's Advocate to discuss branding and marketing for chefs' success in a competitive market. Throughout her career, Annette has broadened market visibility for well-known brands having worked for powerhouses such as Liz Claiborne, Oscar de la Renta and Donna Karan New York in various marketing roles. In 2009 her passion for marketing and event planning led her to launch her own imprint, Icon Marketing. It would become the epicenterof her vast knowledge and connections throughout the United States, Australia, Japan, Jamaica and Europe. Growing up Annette was a very picky eater, however, as she got older and throughout her travels for business and pleasure, Annette says she became “The Accidental Foodie.” It wouldn't be long before Annette would unite her passion for food with her business and ultimately her Caribbean roots. After much research, she realized that Caribbean flavours and artisanal food manufacturers are at a great disadvantage competing for consumers' attention in the U.S marketplace. Her interest in this niche market was further sparked as she became inspired by those who had a strong desire to bring their homegrown sauces, spirits, and baked goods to the masses but lacked the industry know-how and connections. Annette decided that she wanted to be a solution to the problem by bringing her global expertise to those who needed it most. Hence, the birth of Icon Food Marketing, a boutique agency whose clients have successfully been integrated into key distribution at Whole Foods, Wegmans, Krogers and other upscale specialty food retailers. After experiencing a drastic shift in the food marketing space, pivoted and shifted her Focus to working with chefs. Since forming The Chefs Advocate (a subsidiary of Icon Marketing), Annette was dealt a blow with the passing of her first client. Upon finding out the cause of her client's death, she became an advocate for the chef's welfare inside and outside of the kitchen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/whatscookingwithchefnoel/message

Many successful companies were founded by immigrant entrepreneurs - Google, Tesla, Chobani, eBay, Liz Claiborne, Yahoo, Capital One, Instagram, Kohl’s, and more. Today, one in four U.S. entrepreneurs are first generation immigrants. In this episode we talk with the founders of The Underdog Olga and Q about why immigrant entrepreneurs are often disproportionately more successful than others.SPONSORED BY: Executive Launch (www.execlaunch.com) - from corporate executive to startup founder.2:30 All about The Underdog - two recovering communists9:15 Where did the name ‘The Underdog’ come from?15:50 Why would a scientist partner with such a bold marketer?18:40 As partners, you need to like each other, get along, understand each other - and ideally a similar sense of humor!20:20 The Blue Orange Agro-tech Accelerator (blueorangeaccelerator.com)27:30 Olga’s story: Born and raised in Ukraine29:05 To get the most valuable degrees, you had to have money - so she studied literature & linguistics30:00 Became an English teacher and English translator or Ukranian businesspeople doing business with western countries - in a power position as interpreter, front-row seat to major business deals and presentations. Then back to Kiev.33:40 Moved to U.S. with husband, didn’t know anyone, decided to get MBA from University of Florida. Then investment banker in Miami but decided to not pursue, instead - created The Underdog.37:40 Olga says that she is the ’Type A’ entrepreneur as described in Allen’s new book - Quit to Start - How to Discover Your Best idea, Gain the Confidence, and Plan Your Escape.39:50 Immigrant entrepreneurs understand that they have to use their skills to excel - and that the U.S. market is the most competitive in the world.41:40 Q’s background growing up in Romania.
