Recorded on October 25th, Kate and Carl speak into the post-election future as they break down the 2003 miniseries adaptation of Tony Kushner's American epic. Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes is a story about everything, and we couldn't think of a more perfect piece to discuss to capture this moment in American history.

本期节目我们聊美国剧作家 Tony Kushner 的代表作 Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes。 其他主要演员包括主演BBC剧集《宝拉》(Paula)的丹妮斯高弗(Denise Gough),曾演出《星球大战:原力觉醒》(Star Wars: The Force Awakens) 的占士麦卡德(James McArdle),曾演出英国国家剧院《高校男生》(The History Boys)的罗素托维(Russell Tovey),以及演出音乐剧《金牌监制》(The Producers) 和电影《假凤虚凰》(The Birdcage) 的尼芬连恩(Nathan Lane)。本剧导演玛丽安.艾略特 (Marianne Elliott) 是奥利花奖及东尼奖双料得主。她为英国国家剧院导演的《深夜小狗神秘习题》(The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) 及《雷霆战驹》(War Horse) 都大获成功。 And the band played on, Randy Shiltshttps://www.amazon.com/dp/0312374631电影费城故事, 乔纳森·戴米https://movie.douban.com/subject/1293145/演唱会We Are the World,迈克尔杰克逊https://movie.douban.com/subject/3921776/电影断背山,李安https://movie.douban.com/subject/1418834/电影请以你的名字呼唤我,卢卡·瓜达尼诺https://movie.douban.com/subject/26799731/电影Love, Simon,格里格·伯兰蒂https://movie.douban.com/subject/26654498/播客调戏罗尔卡的「耶尔马」,文化土豆http://dwz.date/danT播客调戏田纳西·威廉斯的「欲望号街车」,文化土豆http://dwz.date/danU See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Twelve years ago when I was a member of the English Department at Deerfield High School on Chicago’s North Shore working full-time in the writing center, teachers Elliot Hurtig and Jeff Berger-White were teaching the repugnant play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, and Hurtig also taught the historically inaccurate Laramie Project, both plays of which espoused politically “progressive,” morally regressive views of homosexuality. Setting aside the egregious obscenity in Angels in America, I discussed with a purportedly Catholic writing center colleague the ethical problem of teachers presenting resources from only one side of …

In the 1980s a plague struck America, and because of who it hit hardest, America was happy to let it run its course and let them die. The arts are how we make sense of that, and point toward what comes next. Alaina takes us through the conception and reception of Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, perhaps the most highly-regarded play of the 20th Century. We also learn more about the real person depicted in it, and share our personal connections to the work. Is it possible to separate the personal from the political, or the path of history from faith? Can a work revitalize its medium, or should credit go to the historical moment that produced it? Can something still be too long even if every part of it is brilliant? Links! For the second time on Close Talking, Connor and Jack consider an excerpt from a play. In a wide-ranging discussion of Harper's Monologue from Tony Kushner's eight hour masterwork "Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes," they discuss modes of writing, lyricism, echoes within the sprawling play, and how the work draws out, smashes together, and interrogates seemingly disconnected aspects of American history. Harper’s Monologue from Angels in America By: Tony Kushner Night flight to San Francisco. Chase the moon across America. God! It’s been years since I was on a plane! When we hit thirty-five thousand feet, we’ll have reached the tropopause. The great belt of calm air. As close as I’ll ever get to the ozone. I dreamed we were there. The plane leapt the tropopause, the safe air, and attained the outer rim, the ozone, which was ragged and torn, patches of it threadbare as old cheesecloth, and that was frightening… But I saw something only I could see, because of my astonishing ability to see such things: Souls were rising, from the earth far below, souls of the dead, of people who had perished, from famine, from war, from the plague, and they floated up, like skydivers in reverse, limbs all akimbo, wheeling and spinning. And the souls of these departed joined hands, clasped ankles, and formed a web, a great net of souls, and the souls were three-atom oxygen molecules, of the stuff of ozone, and the outer rim absorbed them and was repaired. Nothing’s lost forever. In this world, there is a kind of painful progress. Longing for what we have left behind, and dreaming ahead. At least I think that’s so.

This week on 'State of Wonder,' the writer behind 'Angels in America' and the movies 'Lincoln' and 'Munich' on writing for today, the head of Portland Center Stage on the hit musical 'Fun Home' and more.Tony Kushner Finds the Humanity in the Epic - 1:05Playwright Tony Kushner is a fearless explorer of spaces where the personal meets the political. His two-part masterpiece, "Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes," kicked down the door to a discussion of the AIDS epidemic, and his screenwriting work on films like "Lincoln" and "Munich" manage to find the most internal, human stories in mammoth historical events. Kushner is headed to Oregon to deliver the keynote speech at the Oregon Arts Summit on Oct. 6, and we got him on the phone to talk about what he's working on now, including a play about President Trump (maybe) and a new take on "West Side Story" with his regular collaborator, Steven Spielberg.Painter Arvie Smith Wins the Governor's Art Award for Lifetime Achievement - 8:53To celebrate the Oregon Arts Summit and the 50th anniversary of the Oregon Arts Commission, Governor Kate Brown has resurrected the Governor’s Art Awards after a 10-year hiatus. The big winners of the Lifetime Achievement Awards are Portland painter Arvie Smith and the Kalapuya and Coos storyteller Esther Stutzman. Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts, Portland Opera and The James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation are also taking home awards. We sat down with Smith last year before his solo show at the Portland Art Museum to discuss his vivid, explosive paintings rich with political overtones, humor, and heartbreak.opbmusic Session in the Woods with Folk Singer Joan Shelley - 16:07This year, folk singer Joan Shelley released her fifth solo album with some big-name help. Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy produced and recorded the album in his Chicago studio. With those massive resources at her fingertips, Shelley could have gone big with a fuller sound and plenty of bells and whistles; instead, she doubled down on a minimalist sound that has made her stand out in an increasingly grandiose music industry. Recently, Shelley and guitarist Nathan Salsburg performed two songs for OPB on a hiking trail in Portland’s Marquam Nature Park. You can find videos at opbmusic. Chris Coleman on Directing the Tony-Winning Musical 'Fun Home' and Portland Center Stage's Upcoming Season - 24:15Portland Center State, the city’s biggest theater company, opened its 30th season this month with a most unlikely musical: the Tony-award-winning, coming-of-age story “Fun Home,” based on the graphic novel by cartoonist Alison Bechdel. It's the story of Bechdel's own coming out in contrast to the closeted, repressed life her father lived, and the title refers to a nickname she and her siblings had for the family house, which also happened to be the town's funeral home. You will never laugh so hard at kids making up a musical commercial about embalming. We talk with artistic director Chris Coleman about the production, which is the first by a local theater on the West Coast, as well as the rest of the season.
