The guy tries to leave, the rich guy tries to stop him, you've heard it all before. Annabelle's 'Trust Me, You'll Like It' for this season is... If there's two words you'd associate with our show, I hope they would be spider and head. We're doing a 2/3rds excellent 1/3rd deeply flawed movie that hits a lot of our sweet spots but ultimately fails to get that final gold star. And we're talking about the nature of emotions and whether it would be better if we could control them, and also testing on criminals etc, everything you'd expect watching this opal in the rough. Welcome back to the Let's be Friends Podcast. Today my guest is Let's be Friends' contributor and author Nicholas Hinton. After nearly three years of radio silence, Nick recently started posting threads again, where he has shared some of what he's been researching since his hiatus. This episode of Let's Be Friends is only Part 2 in a new series Nick and I will be doing together as we dive deeper into his work.In Part 2, we discuss the conspiracy theory that Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and an AI called Q are the Unholy Trinity spoken of by right-wing Evangelicals, and how even this conspiracy theory is a conspiracy in and of itself, which is meant to lead Christ's flock astray into a new, lukewarm, syncretic, and sci-fi version of Christianity. Are the Jesuits staging a heretical and Futurist interpretation of the Scriptures to distract the end times Christians from the true Revelation timeline, and discredit the truth of Historicist Orthodoxy? Is it possible we are witnessing the Great Falling Away from the True Faith? There are few copies left if you want to Preorder my memoir Here Comes TroubleWant more Let's be friends? “Being text-focused has been really beneficial and a change from the way I've seen concerts programmed in the past: ‘Do the keys align? What is the soundscape?' Those things are important, but for these concerts, the message that we're putting out there has to be priority. We are choral musicians, and we have words and stories to share, and those have to take precedent.”Dr. Alexander Lloyd Blake works as a conductor, composer/arranger, vocal contractor, singer, and music activist. Blake is the Founding Artistic Director of Tonality, an award-winning choral ensemble focused on spreading a message of unity, peace, and social justice through a culturally diverse choral setting. He also serves as Principal Associate Conductor of the National Children's Chorus. As an arranger, Blake's “Wade in the Water” was a featured arrangement at the 2013 North Carolina Music Educators Association convention and is published with Santa Barbara Music Publishing. His choral arrangements are published by Alliance Music Publishing and Walton Music Publishing. Other musical activities include an opera conducting premiere at the 2019 Prototype Festival in New York City, preparing choirs for live performances with UCLA Center for the Art of Performance, and vocally arranging for a nationally televised performance during the 2022 MLB All-Star Game.Recent film and TV credits include singing on the soundtrack of Jordan Peele's “Us,” Disney's “Lion King,” and Pixar's “Spies in Disguise,” and leading sessions for Warner Bros "Space Jam: A New Legacy" and Netflix film "Escape from Spiderhead." Blake also worked as the choral contractor and vocal arranger for Andy Grammer's performance at the 2019 ARDYs (Radio Disney Awards). Blake recently prepared singers for the 2020 Grammy Awards and performed at the 92nd Academy Awards.Blake completed the Doctorate in Musical Arts degree at the University of Southern California in 2019, the Master of Music degree at the University of California Los Angeles in 2014, and the Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude) in Vocal Performance at Wake Forest University in 2010.To get in touch with Alex, you can find him on Instagram: @alexanderlblake. An encore presentation of our episode on Spiderhead from June 26, 2022. This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Spiderhead. Here's the Netflix synopsis: “Two inmates form a connection while grappling with their pasts in a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by a brilliant visionary who experiments on his subjects with mind-altering drugs.” Dave really enjoyed the airplane in this movie. And the car. And the boat. Ashley has a bone to pick with Chris Hemsworth's involvement in the production side of things. Justin was annoyed by most everything in this film for some reason. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/whyarepeoplewatchingthis/support
The CPX team freaks out about AI, explores stories of “efficiency” run amok, and probes our tech utopias. --- The apocalypse will be ... boring. Or so says Charlie Warzel, tech journalist for The Atlantic. He means that AI won't put you out of a job or take over the world, so much as overstuff your inbox and give you more mind-numbing tasks to complete. Other people in the know about AI are less optimistic. Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather” of AI who resigned from Google in May, Sam Altman, the CEO of the company behind ChatGPT, and others have sounded the alarm: AI is progressing too quickly, no one knows exactly how it works, and without careful regulation it will upend life as we know it. There are a lot of unknowns where technology is concerned. One thing we do know, though, is it makes for great TV, and stories and books. In this edition of Seen & Heard, the CPX team debriefs on what they've been watching and reading. Natasha takes us through the twists and turns of Amazon Prime's Mrs Davis, a “bonkers” show about a nun facing off against Mrs Davis, the all-knowing algorithm against whom she has a grudge. Simon looks at the way George Saunders' short story “Escape from Spiderhead” (and the Spiderhead film based on it) explores how “the greater good” is used to justify all kinds of evils. Justine looks closer at the digital utopia on offer in Grace Chan's speculative novel Every Version of You, and finds that its promise of agelessness, no death, no suffering, and no body is basically heaven without God. Explore: ABC article on Replika Every Version of You by Grace Chan Escape From Spiderhead by George Saunders (via The New Yorker) Mrs Davis trailer Her and a Disembodied Future by Mark Stephens Andy Crouch's Richard Johnson Lecture on why technology keeps disappointing us and Q&A Charlie Warzel: Here's how AI will come for your job

It's Fanuary on the podcast as we take some listener suggestions. First up is the Netflix Spanish film THE PLATFORM. Get locked in prison? Try eating a limited amount of food and see what happens. Then instead of prison, we go to an experimental island where they try out different drugs to varying results. Some of them are sinister.
Hoy reseñaremos: SCREAM -2022, EL MÉTODO WILLIAMS, EL CALLEJÓN DE LAS ALMAS PERDIDAS, LA ABUELA, MOONFALL, MUERTE EN EL NILO, UNCHARTED, EL PROYECTO ADAM, RRR, MORBIUS, ANIMALES FANTÁSTICOS: LOS SECRETOS DE DUMBLEDORE, AMBULANCE: PLAN DE HUÍDA, VENECIAFRENIA, X, TODO A LA VEZ Y EN TODAS PARTES, JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION, LIGHTYEAR, SPIDERHEAD, EL PESO DE UN TALENTO DESCOMUNAL, BLACK PHONE, ELVIS, EL MONSTRUO MARINO, EL AGENTE INVISIBLE, MEN, BULLET TRAIN, NOPE, CRIMENES DEL FUTURO, SMILE, LA MALDICIÓN DEL HOMBRE LOBO, BLACK ADAM, SIN NOVEDAD EN EL FRENTE, WAKANDA FOREVER, AVATAR: EL SENTIDO DEL AGUA, EL MISTERIO DE GLASS ONION (Puñales por la Espalda 2). I think there's been a glitch! This week the Ladies found themselves in a strange scifi prison world and a slightly different genre with Spiderhead. On this week's episode, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) discuss Netflix's Spiderhead and the tumult at the world's largest streamer. How is it that a film from the director of the biggest movie of the summer can release a movie starring a key part of the MCU and the star of one of Netflix's biggest hits ever can just kind of … show up, and then disappear? How does this make sense from a business standpoint? Is the movie of the week model sustainable? Sadly, no bonus episode this week, as our travel/vacation schedules made coordinating impossible.

The good news is that we have four big, fascinating movies to discuss this week. The bad news is that Will has Covid. Hey, you win some, you lose some. Anyway, we discuss the Pixar "Toy Story" offshoot "Lightyear," the Netflix film with Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller "Spiderhead," the Emma Thompson sex comedy "Good Luck to You Leo Grande" and the Cooper Raiff/Dakota Johnson romantic comedy (and huge Sundance hit) "Cha Cha Real Smooth." Busy week! Covid won't stand in our way! Timestamps: 13:26 "Lightyear" 41:11 "Spiderhead" 52:22 "Good Luck to You Leo Grande" 1:11:44 "Cha Cha Real Smooth" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@gmail.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Good Luck To You, Leo Grande is a fantastic new British movie that sees Dame Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack spend a lot of time together in a hotel room. So that's exactly what we made them do again this week, with Ella Kemp (making her Empire Podcast debut) talking to the stars of Sophie Hyde's movie about an ageing woman who, having had very few positive sexual experiences, hires a sex worker (McCormack), and complications ensue. The film is frank, funny, and insightful, and their chat with Ella is similarly so, featuring Dame Emma's reminiscences about The Tall Guy, and one of the best answers we've ever had on the podcast. Hint: it features an Oscar. Then, in the podbooth this week, Chris Hewitt is joined by James Dyer and, for the first time in ages, Helen O'Hara, and truth be told, being reunited makes them go a little doolally. So, in-between answering a listener question about the film sets they've accidentally stumbled upon in a non-professional capacity, they talk about Helen's Wikipedia page, and Chris and Helen educate James about the history of the Giant's Causeway. They also discuss actual films at some point, including the week's movie news, including Lady Gaga possibly joining Joker 2 (which may be a musical???), the announcement of the Paddington 3 director, and their feelings about the official title of Knives Out 2: Benoit Boogaloo. In the reviews section, they run their eye over Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, Spiderhead, Everything Went Fine, and Last Seen Alive, and Sophie Butcher goes to infinity and beyond to help everyone get to grips with Pixar's Lightyear. Enjoy. TIMESTAMPS! (timings are approx.) Pixar is back in theaters with the release of Lightyear, the film Toy Story's Andy fell in love with before buying a Buzz Lightyear action figure. We review the film (starring Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Take Waititi), as well as Brian and Charles, Netlfix's Spiderhead, and more. This week is packed with new releases, but first, we have to take a moment to recognize the huge opening weekend for Jurassic World: Dominion, another sign that the theatrical business is coming back strong. Also, with another weekend breaking $50 million for Top Gun: Maverick, it takes over the top spot for this year's domestic box office. Sean was able to catch up with the new Jurassic film, so we take a moment to add it to our official tier list. Check out our finalized list here.
