Send us a textThis interview is a long time coming. I am extremely grateful for Adam taking the time to come on to share his knowledge. I'm sure if time allotted, we could easily could've had a three hour conversation, and I promise we will do at least one more episode. In this talk, we discuss his decision to write a book about playwriting from a letter-writing perspective, common questions he is asked, marketing and approaching theaters, dealing with rejection, finding opportunities, and negotiating compensation. We also discuss applying to Julliard, structure, considering your audience, the Math of Playwriting, monologues as a marketing tool, how changing characteristics might affect approach, the strategy of revealing information, the traps of questions and answers in dialogue, and the benefits of (earned) reversals. Playwrights of any level will walk away with something from this conversation. I look forward to the next conversations with Adam, because I will walk away so much the wiser. In Portland, arts organizations are facing shrinking budgets, donor fatigue and other financial struggles. The city launched the Office of Arts of Culture last year, but Portland faces a $27 million budget gap. As people move out of Portland, an arts tax aimed at boosting the region’s arts and culture offerings might yield less money. Blake Shell is the executive and artistic director of the Oregon Center for Contemporary Art. Marissa Wolf is the artistic director of Portland Center Stage. Kimberly Howard Wade is the executive director of Caldera, which serves young people in Portland and Sisters. And Darion Jones is the assistant director of the city’s Office of Arts and Culture. Local musicians and bandleaders Domo Branch and Charlie Brown III will direct a 15-piece lineup of regional and national musicians performing traditional scores with a modern twist. In this episode, Adam and Budi kick of the first book club episode of the year with The Dutchman, by Amiri Baraka. We welcome Taylor Barfield to the discussion, as he joins Budi and Adam in dissecting this classic. Poet, writer, teacher, and political activist Amiri Baraka was born Everett LeRoi Jones in 1934 in Newark, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University and Howard University, spent three years in the U.S. Air Force, and returned to New York City to attend Columbia University and the New School for Social Research. Baraka was well known for his strident social criticism, often writing in an incendiary style that made it difficult for some audiences and critics to respond with objectivity to his works. Throughout most of his career his method in poetry, drama, fiction, and essays was confrontational, calculated to shock and awaken audiences to the political concerns of black Americans. For decades, Baraka was one of the most prominent voices in the world of American literature.Baraka's legacy as a major poet of the second half of the 20th century remains matched by his importance as a cultural and political leader. His influence on younger writers has been significant and widespread, and as a leader of the Black Arts movement of the 1960s Baraka did much to define and support black literature's mission into the next century. His experimental fiction of the 1960s is considered some of the most significant African-American fiction since that of Jean Toomer.________________________________________________________________________________________________Taylor Barfield is a dramaturg, writer, and theater artist from Baltimore, MD. He served as the Acting Literary Manager at Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, CT and the Literary Manager at Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ. Taylor currently works as a freelance dramaturg and consultant working with organizations such as the Guthrie, BMG, Portland Center Stage, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, and Yale Repertory Theatre. Taylor received his B.A. in Molecular/Cellular Biology and English Literature from Johns Hopkins University and is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, where he earned his M.F.A. and D.F.A. in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism. His scholarly work explores how contemporary Black American playwrights re-imagine and re-stage Black theater history. His writing has been published in Vulture, TDF Stages, and the Marginalia Review of Books. You can modify it depending on the time you have. The full version is to lay down on the floor, close your eyes and begin to take deep breaths (grab a neck pillow if you need the support). Each breath should be about 3-5 seconds inhale, 3-5 seconds exhale. The more you do it, you can extend the breath to 10 seconds. For the first few breaths, attempt to relax your entire body. Find where tension is lingering and try to release it. Is your neck tight? Are you holding your jaw? Is your calf extended? What are your fingers doing? Check in with your whole body. Once you feel relaxed and you've been breathing for a bit, you can start the exercise. The exercise involves isolating certain parts of your body and tensing them for a short duration and then releasing that isolation. It follows this pattern. Deep breath in. Hold for as long as you can. Tense the isolated area for as long as you hold. Release the breath and tension simultaneously. Do not explode the exhale, simply release. As you are tensing, check into your body. Disengage any unnecessary tension. For the full exercise, isolate in the following order: Face Shoulders, neck and chest Hands Core Legs and feet. Whole body For a modified tension and release exercise, you can sit in a chair, relaxed hands either on the armrests or resting on the thighs. While seated, do your best to have a relaxed, neutral posture. You can either go right to tensing the whole body or do any combination of isolation required. Andrew Samonsky explains how he became a leading man on broadway. His struggles with substance abuse in high school and college led him to go to rehab. While there, his voice teacher sent him a letter that would change his life forever. The main focus of their discussion is around the parallels with developing his physical singing voice and his authentic. "artistic voice". His perspective can be helpful to any aspiring actor and singer hoping to one day make in in show business. After getting an ensemble role in Broadway's revival of South Pacific, he got a call that the leading man got sick and it was time for Andrew to seize the moment and play the lead role of Lt. Cable. As impacts of climate change affect the places where we live, conflicts and questions arise. This is what happened to Jacques Kenjio and his family in the costal city of Douala, Cameroon. Although a tribal chief provided them with legal documentation to occupy the land, the government forced them and hundreds of others to leave without providing any compensation. This motivated Jacques to learn about social justice and to pursue higher education in the United States. Jacques Kenjio is a Ph.D. Candidate in environmental studies at Antioch University New England (AUNE) with a focus on two key areas: Government-Driven land dispossession and land policy reform in Sub-Saharan Africa at large, and specifically in his country of birth, Cameroon. His other research interests include: environmental justice and policy (especially climate change policy), multi-stakeholder participatory processes, social justice and community building. In looking for ways to get involved in the climate movement, he stumbled upon Citizens Climate Lobby. At first he could not believe citizens were able to approach lawmakers and their staffs directly. This type of access just does not happen in Cameroon. In addition to taking part in CCL activities in the USA, Jacques is now active in Citizens Climate International in supporting CCL volunteers in French speaking African countries. Jacques reveals the challenges CCLers in many African countries face in part because of the daily challenges that come from poverty, underemployment, and political instability. He also tells us the moving story of Bunyui John Njabi, a CCL volunteer who was killed because of political unrest in Cameroon. In addition to his work wtih CCL Bunyui John Njabi sang original songs about climate change and environmental justice. She is also a partner at Pipestem and Nagle Law, P.C., where she works to protect tribal sovereignty and the inherent right of Indian Nations to protect their women and children from domestic violence and sexual assault. She is also a successful playwright who has been using the stage to raise awareness about land sovereignty issues and the epidemic violence against women. From 2015 to 2019, she served as the first Executive Director of the Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program. Nagle is an alum of the 2013 Public Theater Emerging Writers Program. Portland Opera's “Journeys To Justice” features a variety of compositions focused on the Black experience. Damien Geter is an artistic advisor to Portland Opera and the curator of the program. He selected pieces that connect the civil rights movement of the 1960s to current events and explore both joys and pain specific to Black Americans. The organization also asked Geter to include his own composition, “The Talk: Instructions for Black Children When They Interact with the Police.” The 75 minute show is streaming now through May 31. Rodney Hicks is a New York actor/playwright, originally from Philly, who makes his home in Denver, CO with his husband and two dogs. His play FLAME BROILED. or the ugly play had its World Premiere at Local Theater Company in Boulder, CO in the Fall of 2019. The play was awarded the 2019 Eulipions Fund on behalf of The Denver Foundation. His other plays, JUST PRESS SAVE and MS. PEARL'S CABARET was a 2018 and 2019 Semi-Finalist for the Eugene O’Neill Theater Conference. Kaj-Anne Pepper started out as the youngest member of the infamous performance art drag troupe Sissy Boy in the mid-aughts. He's since matured into Portland's youngest grand dame, hosting TBA's hugely popular Critical Mascara Drag Ball. He also does club nights across town. His show is called “D.I.V.A. Portland Center Stage and Artist Repertory Theater have staged his adaptations "Sometimes a Great Notion," "The Chosen" and three short stories by Kurt Vonnegut. Now, Portland Center Stage is producing the first of what he calls his irreverent adaptations: "Stupid F**king Bird," which runs through March 27.A play on Chekhov's "The Seagull," the fowl-named play was originally developed at Washington D.C.'s Woolly Mammoth Theater.
