Tune in to hear some of the stories of her legendary career, including working as an assistant director to Bartlett Sher, helping to cast the revival of AWAKE AND SING, how the Obama presidency aligned with the story of SOUTH PACIFIC, how her path to theater mirrored her uncle James Lapine, how the tour of WAR HORSE helped her find her own path as a director, why she doesn't like using projections, the challenges of adapting Almodovar in WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, collaborating with Kate Hamill on LITTLE WOMEN and DRACULA, the work ethic of making theater in Japan, how she came to direct the Broadway revival of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, importing technology from Germany to create the chromolumes, using her filmmaking experience for SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM, the joys of collaborating with Jean Smart, and so much more. Don't miss this expansive conversation with one of Broadway's best directors.

It's been reported that 1.5 million people are taking GLP1 weight-loss jabs and a huge majority are buying online without a face-to-face appointment with a doctor. Yesterday, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) warned that women using weight-loss jabs must use effective contraception - and it is not known whether taking the medicines could harm an unborn baby. To discuss whether people using the jabs are aware of these issues and getting the right advice, Anita Rani is joined by GP Dr Sarah Jarvis and BBC Health Reporter Philippa Roxby. The Salt Path is a new film based on Raynor Winn's international bestselling memoir, starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs. Just days after Raynor learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years has a rare neurodegenerative condition, their home is taken away and they lose their livelihood. With nothing left to lose, they walk the 630-mile South West Coast Path. It's the first film directed by the acclaimed and award-winning theatre director Marianne Elliott, whose celebrated productions include War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. She joins Anita in the studio. For the first time since 1973 women will walk out to compete at Queen's Club as the Queen's Tennis tournament gets underway. Probírají, proč jsou české hry tak jedinečné a přijde i na to, jak mobilní hry mění pohled na design, proč má smysl věnovat čas menším indie titulům, a proč občas trpíme u příběhů velkých AAA her. It's been just over 20 years since the Battle of Fallujah, a bloody campaign in a destructive Iraq War that we now know was based on a lie. But back then, in the wake of 9/11, the battlefield was filled with troops who believed in serving and defending the country against terrorism. “Going to Fallujah was the most horrific experience of our lives,” said Mike Ergo, a team leader for the US Marines Alpha Company, 1st Battalion. “And it was also, for myself, the most alive I've ever felt.”This week on Reveal, we're partnering with the nonprofit newsroom The War Horse to join Ergo's unit as they reunite and try to make sense of what they did and what was done to them. Together, they remember Bradley Faircloth, the 20-year-old lance corporal from their unit who lost his life, and unpack the mental and emotional battles that continue for them today. This episode originally aired in January 2025. This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!

Pastor Ulysess teaches us that only through God will we find everlasting peace with this passage in Zechariah. It is too easy and tempting, when we are young, to put our peace in worldly things. But the trials and slings of fortune will come in time. If we are to truly stay steadfast and unshaken by this life, we must put our faith in the one place where no one can take it away. That in the arms of Jesus Christ and His promise of everlasting peace.
You'd probably never guess the biblical character trait that a warhorse can teach us about.

1.35 million applicants received a military entrance physical from 2016 to 2020, and about 15% of them received an initial disqualification. More than half of these disqualified applicants sought a waiver, and they were more likely than not to get approved. This whole system can be frustrating and opaque, so in this episode we dive into the medical standards and waiver process with a guest who was deeply involved. Dr. Christopher D. Meyering is a board-certified Primary Care Sports Medicine physician. He attended medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, Midwestern University and subsequently completed his Family Medicine internship and residency training at DeWitt Army Community Hospital at Fort Belvoir, VA. Following a 2-year assignment in Germany, he completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Tri-Service Primary Care Fellowship at Fort Belvoir, VA. He is certified by the American Board of Family Physicians with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine, and he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Meyering retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of Service which included 3 combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as a Battalion Surgeon for Infantry, Armor, and Field Artillery units. Several key positions during his career were assignments as the Command Surgeon for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command which oversees all recruiting and training for the entire U.S. Army; the Command Surgeon for the U.S. Army Recruiting Command which made him the medical waiver authority for the Army; and the Division Surgeon for the 1st Cavalry Division. Dr. Meyering was the Chief Medical Officer for the 2022 and 2024 DoD Warrior Games held in Orlando, FL. Additionally he was the co-medical lead for the 2021 Invictus Games held in The Hague, The Netherlands and for the 2023 Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany. He is currently the Chief Medical Officer for all upcoming DoD Warrior Games and is the Medical Lead for Team U.S. at the 2025 Invictus Games in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada. He is the author of multiple peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and published abstracts, and he has presented at international and national conferences and events. He was previously the assistant team physician for George Mason University and covered all collegiate sports. He volunteered medical services at multiple levels and events to include the Marine Corps marathon, the Army 10 miler, the Augusta Half Iron Man Triathlon, All Army Wheelchair basketball, USA National and Golden Gloves Boxing events, Army combatives tournaments, professional fast pitch softball, and Special Olympics. We reference a lot of data from this AMSARA report "Accession Medical Standards Analysis and Research Activity"Some other relevant reporting on the issue includes this piece from The War Horse and this discussion of recent changes from AUSACOL (R) Meyering told a story about national media attention on some of his work, and you can find that coverage here

British composer Stuart Hancock's most recent work on the animated epic KENSUKE'S KINGDOM Kensuke's Kingdom helps establish the children's book adaptation as one of the year's most sweeping and heartfelt stories. The film is a good old-fashioned adventure rendered in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation with a voice cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy, and Ken Watanabe. The story concerns a boy who is swept overboard during a storm on a worldwide sailing trip with his family and washes ashore on an island in the Pacific Ocean. While there, he realises someone is nearby, aiding him with his survival. The script for the film was by award-winning British scriptwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce based on the book by celebrated British author Sir Michael Morpurgo, who is most well-known for his book WAR HORSE, also adapted into an acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg. In November 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Stuart Hancock via Zoom from his home in Leighton Buzzard, England. During the conversation, they discussed his work on KENSUKE'S KINGDOM and the similarities and differences between scoring for commercials and narrative work. This month on Things That Go Boom, we're passing the mic to three veterans to share their memories in their words. In this first entry: When paratrooper Bill Glose came home from the Gulf War after leading his platoon, silence was his fortress. That all changed when a friend suggested he start writing poetry. The story is part of a new partnership with the news site The War Horse. The site publishes real stories from veterans that look war in the eye, rough edges and all. If you haven't heard of them, be sure to check them out. And tune in all month for more monologues.Additional ResourcesSilence Was My Father's Fortress. I Shared It for a Time Until Poetry Set Me Free, Bill Glose, The War Horse, 2024

Sympathize with a nazi? No thanks! The Reader left us puzzled about what the film makers wanted us to feel. The movie has powerhouse performances all around, and we enjoyed the non-linear timeline, but we couldn't necessarily get behind feeling bad for someone who became a nazi because they couldn't read? They seduced a child because they couldn't read? Like we said, no thanks. What did you think of The Reader? Let us know on Twitter and Instagram! Twenty years ago this month, U.S. Marines began fighting the largest urban battle since the Vietnam War. More than 12,000 American, British and Iraqi troops fought for Fallujah, which had become an insurgent stronghold. In collaboration with The War Horse, Nick Schifrin spent time with the Marines who still remember and feel that battle like it was yesterday. Hi Listener, Sometimes it's very hard to make things silly, so this time we're not going to. This is a show Tombo wrote many moons ago after he spoke to some people who were genuinely in the history and did the history... and it wasn't always nice. CONTENT WARNING!!! This episode features actual history where not everyone makes it to the end in an actual serious way that isn't funny. It's really important though, because perhaps if we hear what people in the past had to do we can try and avoid having to do it again... Thanks to Zapsplat for the SFX as always. Thanks to Scott Buckley for his amazing music. Thanks to Warhorse for the song that Pear Bear thought was an old folk song (he's not seen Warhorse yet) and used probably more than most copyright lawyers would be happy with. Thanks for listening. Remember what others did folks... Then maybe we and our children won't have to do it.
People looking to hit the casino in Lincoln can now play table games for the first time. The facility doubled in size Monday, with nearly 900 different slots, tables and kiosks available now.
The passing of ex-Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Di'Anno was the major topic on the hearts and minds of Metal Heads the world over. Mr. Di'Anno wasn't just a great artist, he was a frontrunner and influence on an entire generation. So it's only appropriate we dedicate our discussion segment to this legend. We go over how we first discovered The Man. Our fave tunes. And where we think he would be haunting. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we attended the Winnipeg Comic Con and helped christen a new venue. Musically, we crank Ancients, Castle, Phobia, Desultory, Tailgunner, Juggernaut and Paul Di' Anno's Warhorse and Killers. Horns Up!

Who's to blame for the Trojan War Horse? This week, The Alarmist (Rebecca Delgado Smith) welcomes Jamila Webb back to the show to discuss the very dramatic, very dense, very complicated Trojan War and the larger than life Gods whose meddling ways had rather significant influences on the events as they unfolded. They're joined by Fact Checker Chris Smith and Producer Clayton Early. They say don't meet your heroes. Well, what about The Gods? Are they just like us? Were they trying to tell the mortals something or were they just reading into signs too much? And as for The Trojan Horse? Maybe they SHOULD have looked that gift horse in the mouth a little more closely. Join the Millennial Mustard Seed host, Rod Smith, for a thought-provoking voyage into the unusual, unexplained and unexplored facets of the world we live! Armed with a seeker's humility and a Biblical lens Millennial Mustard Seed never fails to inspire, provoke and intrigue listeners to deepen their faith. Returning guest Ali Siadatan has a bombshell conversation with Rod about the great deception and biblical prophecy in a way you have likely never heard. This conversation goes deep, notepad and pen recommended. Ali is the founder of Think Again Productions in Canada, a multimedia teaching ministry shedding light on mysteries and treasures of scriptural knowledge coming from the Lord to this generation. Knowledge is making the Bible more real than ever and just when we thought it was all myth the evidence keeps stacking up in favor of the Bible's eternal tale. From Biblical cities peering through the sand, to “alien” abductions and prophetic events, mysteries are opening up to our generation in a way that would have blown the minds of past generations of Believers.
