It's Popzara's Movie Time! Podcast, where our in-house movie nerds Ethan Brehm and Nate Evans take you on an unscripted journey yakking and chatting about some of their favorite movie moments and cinematic scenes, from past and present, presented without snark and snobbery for your listening pleasure. On deck are two blockbusters directed by Steven Spielberg that are as much science-fiction spectacle as they are family dramas, and whose success and innovative film-making would help reshape the movie industry forever. First is 1977's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Spielberg's follow-up to 1975's Jaws that proved the shark's success was no fluke. By not making the aliens malevolent but benevolent, it was a revelation at the box-office, bested only by George Lucas' Star Wars. Next is 1982's E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, the heartfelt story of an alien lost on Earth who befriends a young boy that quickly became the most successful movie in history (a title is kept for 11 years until it was dethroned by Spielberg's own Jurassic Park). Our hosts examine the relatable inspirations for both films, realizing their continued success owes as much to nostalgia as groundbreaking cinematic storytelling. Listen as they discuss the surprising connections between Spielberg's films and George Lucas' Star Wars (did you know E.T.'s species has an official name?), how E.T. inspired a hit Neil Diamond song, and speculate if Spielberg's 2022 autobiographical The Fablemans can be considered a thematic followup to both films. All this and more when you listen today!

During FuMPFest 2024 members of The FuMP were invited to Escape from the Secret Lab by Dr. Milo T. Pinkerton of the Consortium of Genius. This was a command performance that Devo Spice, Luke Ski, Insane Ian, and Chris Mezzolesta took part in. If they did well they'd be spared. If not, they would be crushed under a 16 ton weight. One of the challenges was an Instant Song, where the performers were required to come up with a song "on the spot." So Chris provided a funky riff on the guitar while Devo, Ian, and Luke each did short verses about their experiences being kidnapped by the COG. This is a recording of that performance. We are proud to report that The FuMP was spared. This recorded is just one of many you can hear on the new FuMPFest 2024 - Live! 2-CD compilation! The album features two hours of music recorded at FuMPFest 2024 and features performances by Pastor Hastur, Holy Bongwater, 2d6, Ross Childs, Steve Goodie, Carla Ulbruch, and our guest of honor The Consortium of Genius! Plus bits from the Live Podcasts panel, the Dumb Parody Ideas contest, Movie Time, the QandA, and more! Pick up your copy now in the store.

After a long hiatus we are back with another Movie Time episode covering another excellent piece of Labor Cinema. This week we discuss the 2023 Indian film, Zwigato, about the crushing burden faced by workers in the modern gig economy. Though this is a rare one film episode of Movie Time, this film covers so many aspects of what it means to be working class in the 21st century that we couldn't possibly have covered a second film in the same time. Zwigato is one of the best pieces of working class film to come out in years, and it was a great discussion breaking down its insights into working class struggle and the oppressive systems crushing our lives. In the final installment of Mad Love Month, Hollywood gives Steven J. Russell, the man they call King Con, the big screen treatment and the results are...mixed. In the second half of this true crime pairing, Christopher and Eric compare reported facts with cinematic depictions to find out how much of this Jim Carrey vehicle I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS is fiction. And would this exploration of a devoted gay romance defined by rampant criminal activity be told in quite the same way if Hollywood were to make it today? Christopher and Eric weigh in on these and other important questions — like whether or not Ewan McGregor is really cute. (Spoiler Alert: he is.)
