If you've been listening to Transmissions for a while, you've noticed how often host Jason P. Woodbury brings up “time” when talking about music. And while he's certainly apt to talk about music in spiritual or "out there" terms, songs are in some ways literal time machines: they can take you back to your own past or in the case of traditional music, preserve some essential “nowness” of the human experience. Songsmith Jake Xerxes Fussell grew up understanding this intimately. As the son of folklorist, photographer, and artist Fred C. Fussell, he spent time on the road with his father, documenting the sound and feel of blues singers, indigenous fiddlers, and performers whose songbooks reached back generations. The younger Fussell carries on curatorial work through his records, applying his alternately smooth and grainy voice to traditional vernacular ballads. His latest collection is called When I'm Called. Produced by James Elkington, it finds the Durham-based songwriter joined by a cast of collaborators including Blake Mills, Joan Shelley, and Joe Westerlund of Bon Iver. Though it's comprised of traditional blues and folk, as is Fussell's trademark, it isn't a work of historicity so much as a document of how songs live; how they can be preserved, and how they can find new life. In this conversation, Fussell explains, and touches on The Beastie Boys and his time with one of our documentary heroes, Les Blank. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. This week on the program we continue with our occasional record review feature. We'll talk about the recording, and listen to three selections. Surrounding her work will be some some of today's finest songwriters who just happen to be women. We'll hear Joan Shelley, Aiofe O'Donovan, Eliza Gilkyson, Ani Di Franco and many more. Janis Ian and the Women this week … on The Sing Out! On this week's Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, catches up with an old friend who was in Louisville nearly a year ago facilitating a listening session at the Community Boathouse about developing an Ohio River Restoration Plan. Jordan Lubetkin is the Director of Ohio River Restoration for the National Wildlife Federation (https://www.nwf.org/ohioriver) and the Communications Director for the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition (https://www.healthylakes.org/). Over the past year, Jordan has been criss-crossing the region conducting community listening sessions throughout the Ohio River watershed to discuss clean water priorities for a new plan to protect and restore the waters in the 14-state Ohio River region. The Ohio River Basin Alliance and National Wildlife Federation, cohosted these listening sessions to take advantage of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to craft a regional plan to restore and protect the waters of the Ohio River basin. The plan, once complete, will be delivered to Congress and the Biden Administration. The goal is for the federal government to implement the plan with new annual investments to address long-standing problems, such as sewage contamination, toxic pollution, inadequate water infrastructure, mine waste, run-off, flooding, and habitat loss. Every year the federal government invests in programs to protect and restore our nation's great waters – including the Chesapeake Bay, Puget Sound, Gulf Coast, and Great Lakes. We want to add the waters of the Ohio River basin to that list and to make sure that local clean water concerns are addressed and local solutions are prioritized in the clean water plan. In August, the report will finally be released and in late summer/early fall, there'll be opportunities for community engagement around the draft plan. A one-day river restoration tour with a Kentucky Legislative Delegation (Guthrie, McGarvey & Massie) is also being planned for August. One of the key local partners in this process has been the Kentucky Waterways Alliance, which will be hosting a 30th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, August 18th, starting at 6pm at Waterfront Botanical Gardens. Everyone is encouraged to join us in celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Kentucky Waterways Alliance with an unforgettable evening of music, film, food, and art! The celebration will include: • A special performance by Louisville's own Joan Shelley. Joan, longtime friend of KWA, has assembled a honkytonk band to back her, as well as a series of guest vocalists. • Following Joan's performance, we will transport you into the captivating world of environmental storytelling through our 15th annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival. This renowned festival showcases an array of short films that highlight the beauty of our planet's wild and scenic places, as well as the urgent need to protect them. • In between - or during! - these aspects of the evening, you will be able to visit with Al Gorman, renowned artist who creates art from objects found in the Ohio River. • Enjoy food from our sponsor Wiltshire Pantry, and West Sixth Brewing will be selling beer. Get your tickets now and come together with fellow supporters of the KWA as we honor three decades of conservation and advocacy. Let's raise our voices and toast to a brighter future for our precious waterways! Kentucky is water. Water is commonwealth. More info and tickets at http://kwalliance.org As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! Sustainability Now! is hosted by Dr. Justin Mog and airs on Forward Radio, 106.5fm, WFMP-LP Louisville, every Monday at 6pm and repeats Tuesdays at 12am and 10am. In the spring of 2021, singer-songwriter Joan Shelley would visit Earthwave Studio, a recording facility situated in the pastoral landscapes of Shelbyville, Kentucky. In this ideal environment, Shelley and her collaborators would record the collection of songs that would make up her next record. In Episode 45, the native Kentuckian tells the story of her 2022 album The Spur, discussing the lyrical themes and inspirations within the tracks as well as her experience recording them while 7 months pregnant.

On Joan Shelley's fantastic new album The Spur, the singer/songwriter reaches out from a place of solitude, seeking connection. Rooted in Britfolk aesthetics, it's an album that feels intimate but spacious too, all finger picked acoustic guitars, Richard Thompson inspired electrics, and sparse percussion. Alongside her collaborators, who include producer James Elkington, Bill Callahan, with whom she sings a duet, and Shelley's husband, archivist and guitarist Nathan Salsburg, she explores deeply human territory with an almost supernatural calm in her voice. We've interviewed Joan for Aquarium Drunkard a few times, but this is her first appearance on Transmissions. She spoke with host Jason P. Woodbury from Kentucky, and this talk offers a respite from the intensity of the news cycle. Rate, review, subscribe, and spread the word if you dig Transmissions, and if you want to take things further, we're on Patreon. We are a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This week on the program we continue with our occasional record review feature. Janis Ian has announced that “The Light at the End of the Line” will likely be her final studio recording - it's been 15 years in the making and it is just lovely. We'll talk about the CD and listen to three selections. Surrounding Janis' recording are some of the finest songwriters who just happen to be women, which works out well for March – Women's History Month! We'll hear Joan Shelley, Aiofe O'Donovan, Eliza Gilkyson, Ani Di Franco and many more. Janis Ian and the Women … on the next episode of The Sing Out! In this week's episode – the last of 2019 – Mark, Barney & "Jazzbo" see out the year by celebrating the sheer majesty of Aretha Franklin and the posthumously-released Amazing Grace documentary.Featured writer Tom Cox provides the perfect segue: a 1999 piece about the Queen Of Soul and her Atlantic Records producer/mentor Jerry Wexler. Your hosts also enjoy a chuckle as they revisit Tom's 2004 piece on Apple's new GarageBand "workstation".Attention then turns to a 2007 audio interview with uptown funkateer and retromaniac producer Mark Ronson. We hear a clip from Maureen Paton's back-of-a-cab conversation with Ronson, after which RBP's three amigos discuss his subsequent career and his work with Amy Winehouse.Marks talks us through new additions to the RBP library, including Keith Altham in the studio in 1968 with the Rolling Stones (and Jean-Luc Godard!); a 1971 Roy Carr rendezvous with the skinhead edition of Slade; and Joe "Mr. C" McEwen profiling the splendidly eccentric Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams in 1975. Jasper rounds matters off with quotes from David Toop's 2001 Wire interview with the brilliant Björk … and a brief chat about Boris Johnson's new nemesis Stormzy.Oh, and to prove we're not just about yesteryear, we've compiled a playlist of our favourite tracks of 2019: beautiful & thrilling music by the likes of Lizzo, Foals, Brittany Howard, Bon Iver, Nilüfer Yanya, Rustin Man, Billie Eilish, Vampire Weekend, Joan Shelley... and of course Amyl & the Sniffers! Pieces discussed: Aretha Franklin: Amazing Grace film, Amazing Grace album, Rev. James Cleveland, Jerry Wexler, Garageband, Sloan, Mark Ronson audio, Stones set studio on fire, Lionel Hampton, Sly & the Family Stone, Slade, Carl Palmer, Swamp Dogg, Culture Club, Pavement, De La Soul, Björk, Jamie Cullum and Stormzy. The RBP podcast is part of the Pantheon Podcasts network.
Marc doesn't consider himself a “folk music guy” but he cannot deny how strongly he responds to singer-songwriter Joan Shelley's work. Joan talks with Marc about her Kentucky upbringing and how she's careful to respect the roots of folk music while also infusing her work with a vulnerability and texture that is her own. She also discusses her collaborative relationship with Nathan Salsburg, working with Jeff Tweedy as her producer, and her reasons for recording her latest album in Iceland. Plus, Joan gives some songwriting tips to Marc to help him overcome his own insecurity so he can finally write some songs. NICK MOSS BAND featuring DENNIS GRUENLING have been on a winning streak since 2016 when the blues guitar virtuoso and and harmonica wizard joined forces. Their self-made lucky streak continued into early 2019, when down-and-dirty guitarist Moss – a 30-year veteran of Chicago's take-no-prisoners rough and tumble West and South Side blues clubs – won the Blues Music Award (BMA) for Traditional Blues Male Artist Of The Year. Gruenling, one on the hottest players on the scene today, took the BMA for Best Instrumentalist – Harmonica. And now, with the odds heavily in their favor, they unleash their dynamic new album, ‘Lucky Guy!' on Alligator Records. JOAN SHELLEY is a songwriter and singer who lives near Louisville, KY, not far from where she grew up. She draws inspiration from traditional and traditionally-minded performers from her native Kentucky, as well as those from Ireland, Scotland, and England, but she's not a folksinger. Her disposition aligns more closely with that of, say, Roger Miller, Dolly Parton, or her fellow Kentuckian Tom T. Hall. Joan's last record placed on year-end lists at NPR Music, Aquarium Drunkard and Uncut Magazine, among others, and led to an appearance on Later… with Jools Holland, cover stories with Acoustic Guitar Magazine and Fretboard Journal, and more.
