Ed and Jazzer chat during a break in shearing. Jazzer admits to feeling it this year. Ed teases him about getting old. But Jazzer wants to hang up his clippers. Once he starts at Berrow Farm he’ll need his days off – maybe he’s settling down a bit. Ed admits he’ll miss him. Jazzer suggests George might want to give shearing a go as his replacement. Ed sees this might work, but is cautious – George is very much a teenager with his own ideas. Meanwhile Jazzer challenges Ed to a shearing race tomorrow; we’ll see who’s getting old! Lee’s finding Jack and Henry exhausting; he’d forgotten what’s it’s like to entertain a five year old. He does love playing with them though, and Helen assures him it’s mutual. They might just need to set a time limit on the drum playing! Lee looks forward to the boys’ bedtime and getting Helen to himself, but Helen informs him Joy’s dropping in for nibbles later. When she arrives they apologise for the drum noise, but Joy thinks it’s fine – she loves to hear children playing. She lets slip there’s a residents’ WhatsApp group. Helen’s lukewarm, but Lee’s eager to join. As Joy and Lee gossip happily, he can’t wait to get involved. Joy’s a little reticent but promises to add Lee to the group soon. Helen observes wryly that as the two of them are getting on famously, she’ll go and read Henry’s bedtime story. She leaves them to it.

With the transitions taking place and a rapidly changing landscape of options, how is a utility able to do both short-term decision-making and deal with mitigation of operations previously dependent on legacy services, while still maintaining the highest level of availability and cyber protection? How does the telecom service roadmap, driven by consumer demand for higher bandwidth services and more streaming services, impact the plans that utilities must rely on for day-to-day operations? In addition, Joy shares the actions UTC is taking to raise the industry concerns regarding the Federal Communications Commission’s plans to change the rules for a critical spectrum band utilities and other critical-infrastructure industries use for mission-critical communications. As Joy describes, this plan, if approved as proposed, will negatively impact critical operations for electric, gas and water utilities. The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from EnerNex, which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.

Nicole Walker’s Interview Commentary I really enjoyed this interview with Joy and I hope you did as well! I agree with Joy’s viewpoint on the importance of self-care to be more effective and productive.  As Joy mentioned, our eating, sleeping, and exercise habits play a direct role in how we show up. Taking time to care for ourselves puts us in a better place mentally and physically, which leads to increased focus and the ability to get more done with the time we have.  As Joy mentioned, we need to add more quality to our time, and self-care is a great way to achieve this. A quote by Katie Reed reads, “Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what’s left of you”. I admire Joy’s acknowledgement of originally not being a good follower, which as Joy stated is also a part of being a good leader. Being able to support another leader in their weak areas without judging and ridiculing definitely takes maturity. Understanding and respecting the bigger picture helps to make this aspect of leadership easier. I love how Joy went back to her previous leader and apologized for her shortcomings. As Joy illustrated, successful leaders acknowledge their mistakes and learn from their past behaviors. I can relate to Joy’s struggles with her face showing her thoughts and emotions as I battle in this area as well. Initially I did not realize I had this issue, and I would often wonder why people responded to me in certain ways. Once I realized that my facial expressions can be off putting, as Joy stated, then many things started to make more sense. Learning to be mindful of my facial expressions is a constant battle that I will continue to engage in until I have mastered this craft. Nicole Walker’s Takeaway of the Week Joy mentioned the benefits of expanding ourselves as we grow. I really enjoyed the analogy Joy gave about how trees grow in height, while their roots increase in depth and expand in width. Successful leaders understand the need for personal and professional expansion, and actively seek ways to expand themselves. I will make it my business to continue to expand myself personally and professional as I am to be a deeply rooted leader. One of my goals is to stand strong under pressure, so expanding myself is essential. A quote by Nikki Rowe reads, “The chaos doesn’t end, you kinda’ just become the calm.” Nicole Walker’s Leadership Challenge My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life.  I know it’s hard to absorb too much information at one time and it’s even harder to try and implement too many changes at once.  When I attend a training or listen to podcasts I aim to walk away with a least one thing that stuck out to me and one way that I can change as a result.  I challenge you to do the same!  If you decide to take me up on my challenge I would love to know about your key take way.  If you care to share please go to the She Leads Podcast Discussion Group on FB and leave your comment under the Takeaway Thursday post for Season 4 Episode 8. Director Pete Doctor of Pixar's touching comedy "Up" continues to explore into the matters of the mind. His successful attempt to unravel the emotional activities of an 11-year-old girl has appealed to the sympathy of almost every viewer and critic. In China, the title of the film "Inside Out" is an almost shameful cliche. "Tou Nao Te Gong Dui," the awful translation constitutes a deplorable misrepresentation of the story's startling originality. In 2009 inspired by the changes in his daughter's personality as she grew older, Pete Doctor developed the idea of an animation film featuring human emotions. Since adventure stories are his strongest suit, he would have personified emotions explore the most exquisite and least understood item of nature's invention - the human brain. After consulting numerous psychologists, the filmmakers eventually decided on two parallel narratives, happening both inside a girl's mind and out in her real life.To kickstart the story, a girl named Riley moves with her parents from Minnesota to San Francisco. The change in environment and a series of unfortunate happenings cause emotional upheavals inside the 11-year-old. Her core emotions, Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger, are at a loss to help the girl get back on her feet. While trying to stop Sadness from infecting Riley's core memories, Joy is sucked out of the emotional headquarter with Sadness and end up in the storage area of Riley's long-term memories. In their absence, Disgust, Fear and Anger take charge of Riley's emotions, which leads to the change of the girl's personality. As Joy and Sadness try to get back to the headquarter, they meet Riley's imaginary friend, witness the collapse of Riley's personality islands, take the train of thought and visit the Imagination Land, the Subconscious and the Memory Dump. Many well-known Psychological concepts and terms are vividly represented, and above all, they make sense, according to the established theories on human psychology. After a moderately funny and most touching fashion, "Inside Out" is able to convey the importance of everyday happenings and human contact in the shaping of our personalities. A mishandled case may very well have far-reaching repercussion in the development of a child's character, this could came as a shocking revelation for moviegoers in China, where knowledge about the matters of the mind has not been widely cherished outside the academic circle. However informative this comedy adventure is, most viewers would probably find it easier to relate to it on the emotional basis. Interestingly, it is the things we can't remember that hit us the hardest. From the episode about Riley's imaginary friend to the demonstration of things being cleared from her memory bank, these scenes remind us about every tiny moment in our past that has made us who we are today. But the older we are, the fewer we can recall, and that's the saddest thing about life.
