Hello and welcome to the 119th episode of Film Freakz, the podcast about movies! In this episode we talk about the movie Inside Out from 2015. This podcast features YemmytheFerret (Yemmy), RaeofPositivity (Rae), Taymation Studios (Tay), and GreedyWaffle (Nick). This movie was recommended by Rae who had an odd imaginary friend. Riley's emotions led by Joy try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the stress of the move brings Sadness to the forefront. When Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley's mind, the only emotions left in Headquarters are Anger, Fear and Disgust. Directed by Pete Doctor. This week, we focus on love because of Valentine's Day. It's a little different than you might expect, though. We focus on a love for music, family, and life. I just wanted to broaden the scope of Valentine's Day week a little bit. I love all of these movies, but I think if you had to watch them in a certain order, I would watch Lovers Rock, Hair Love, and then Soul. It's a great triple feature. Big shout out to these directors bringing us this amazing art: Pete Doctor, Kemp Powers (Soul) Steve McQueen (Lovers Rock) Matthew A. Cherry, Everett Downing Jr., and Bruce W. Smith (Hair Love).

Mike Jones speaks to Write On host Phil Galasso about the unique process of writing for Pixar, and how he, Pete Doctor and Kemp Powers collaborated on Soul. “It was a great, kind of fantastic partnership because it's hard to force partnerships, and Kemp [Powers] was so open and willing and also so honest and so forthright with what he believed the script should be or what he believed, in particular, the character of Joe needed to be. That was just great to have his… confident voice alongside us.” Mike discusses his journey to becoming a screenwriter and how it wasn’t straightforward. “I did not grow up wanting to be a storyteller. I grew up loving story; I grew up with a dad who loved movies… and I grew up with a love of that kind of visual storytelling. But I grew up in south Texas, and that wasn't an option - being a screenwriter or working in the movies. It wasn't an option; it was like another world to me.” Soul is available to stream on Disney+. What I want is the ocean."” This week on Recently Logged we are discussing the 2020 Pixar release Soul as well as briefly reviewing the films we logged on our Letterboxd dairies in the past week. Both Pixar’s new feature SOUL and Powell and Pressburger’s 1946 fantasy-romance A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH center on a soul gone missing from heaven’s ledger because he’s anxious to get back to his life on earth, but the journeys each of them takes to get there end up drawing different conclusions about the meaning of life. This week we’re joined again by critic and 812FilmReviews founder Robert Daniels to dig into SOUL and debate whether it manages to strike the delicate tonal balance it’s reaching for, how it carries its status as the first Pixar film with a Black protagonist, and how it fits into director Pete Doctor’s filmography, before bringing MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH into the discussion to compare the two films’ depictions of afterlife bureaucracy. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH, SOUL, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Paul Greengrass 0:31:45 - SOUL, Dir. Pete Doctor and Kemp Powers 0:59:30 - WONDER WOMAN 1984, Dir. Patty Jenkins NEWS OF THE WORLD Tom Hanks is the captain again for a sec…thir…fourth time as Captain Kidd - A Civil War veteran who fought for the south who now travels around reading the news of the world to people in different towns if they have a dime and an evening to spend. Hi co star, Helena Zengel is terrific as Johanna- an orphaned girl with nowhere to go. They travel hundreds of miles on a pretty breathtakingly beautiful journey across the south to find what is left of her family only to realize the cliched and inevitable conclusion. One of the best middle of the road films of the year. (6/10) SOUL Disney Pixar films need no introduction, and this one is no exception. Jaimee Foxx and Tina Fey head up this emotional and colorful ride as we follow Joe (Foxx) has lost his passion for music and, through spoiler heavy moments, is separated from his body and must find his way back, while also helping a soul with potential to learn who she is and her passions. Some WONDERFUL moments await you as well as a great score. One of the better Pixar resume items. (8/10) WONDER WOMAN 1984 Patty Jenkins, WHAT HAPPENED? That’s certainly an appropriate question. Wonder Woman (2017) was, in many ways, a huge success. Box office and critically success found Wonder Woman in droves. Well paced, well acted and very well directed- certainly the best of DC as far as the DCEU is concerned. Yet WW1984 is almost the opposite of the qualities listed above. Gal Gadot, Chris Pine both reprise their roles and are joined by Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig. We now fast forward to the 80’s where Diana must face two new enemies: Max Lord and the Cheetah. If you’re a fan or have fond memories of the 80’s then this movie is absolutely for you, because it isn’t for anyone else. Hosted, produced and mixed by Grayson Maxwell and Roger Stillion. Guest appearance by Christopher Boughan. Music by Chad Wall. Quality Assurance by Anthony Emmett. BLOODY EPISODE 74 ‘TRAILER PARK’ ‘Soul’ - Just what the (Pete) Doctor ordered!! It’s a new Disney Pixar film and oh boy does it look like one worth dying for!! Ha. Ha. In this film we see Jaime Fox playing a Jazz musician who hits and big AND THEN DIES. The story tells of his soul trying to make it back to earth before he is taken to heaven? Or something like that, either way, it looks solid! Coming June 2020! ‘Arkansas’ - With a wonderful cast list and charming touch we get Mitchell’s Double Wide for the week, ‘Arkansas’! Kyle and Swin work blindly for a drug dealer named ‘Frog’ whom they’ve never met. It seems as if they think they can try and double cross Frog and branch out for themselves but when a deal seemingly goes wrong, who could they turn to?! Find out in a limited release in the U.S. on May 1, coming to ‘the internet’ shortly after! ‘Bad Trip’ - Well… that was weird. I thought the world had moved on from ‘hidden camera’ type films but here we have ‘Bad Trip’! Starring Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery on a journey across America telling a fictional story about trying to hook up with some chick but along the way they prank people and scare people with hidden camera pranks… yeah nah, you ain’t no Borat… coming to America in April. ‘The Postcard Killings’ - Jeffery Dean Morgan and Femke Jennson team up for this glorified CSI episode about a detective whose daughter gets murdered on her honeymoon. What follows is a trail of lovers bodies as couples begin turning up murdered in artistic ways! And there’s postcards as clues or something… *coughZodiacKillercough*. Coming this week in the US! ‘Seven Stages To Achieve Eternal Bliss by Passing Through the Gateway Chosen by the Holy Storsh’ - Oh. My. Storsh! I’m the name of all that is twisted and religious, here we find this wonderfully dark and funny take on religion and cults! We see the story of Claire and Paul as they move into a new apartment only to find that hey, no biggie, but members from a suicidal bath tub cult may come into your house from time to time to kill them selves! Like I said, no biggie! Looks incredibly intriguing and with TCTP favourite Tikki Wikki playing the leader ‘Storsh’, count me in! ‘YASSS OR PASSS’ - March 20th Edition. ‘The Current War’ - The dramatic story of the cutthroat race between electricity titans Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse to determine whose electrical system would power the modern world. Soul is directed by Pete Doctor (Up, Monster’s Inc., Inside Out) and Kemp Powers (Star Trek: Discovery) and written by Pete Doctor, Kemp Powers, and Mike Jones (Incredibles 2, Coco). Soul is the first Pixar film with a black lead character and is about the untimely death of music teacher and aspiring musician, played by Jamie Foxx (Ray, Baby Driver). However, this is only the beginning of the film as his soul makes his journey through the afterlife. There he meets another soul, voiced by Tina Fey (30 Rock, Mean Girls), and spends the rest of the movie trying to not only get back to his body but also to show Tina Fey’s character that life is worth living. Believe it or not, there was once a time where theme parks were rather humorless. Then artist and Imagineer Marc Davis came along and changed the game. If you like the dog holding the prison cell key in Pirates of the Caribbean or any of the gags on the Jungle Cruise, that's all Davis and it's safe to say that the whimsical tone of Disney theme parks owes him a great debt. Author and Imagineer Christopher Merritt hopes to repay some of that debt with a massive and beautiful book he recently co-authored with Pete Doctor entitled “Marc Davis: In His Own Words.” Chris sat down with Nathan to chat about his pathway into Disney Imagineering and how a decades long mentorship from Davis changed him on both an artistic and personal level. You can pick up "Marc Davis In His Own Words" on Amazon or your local book seller. This week, we watch the Pixar movie that leads us on a journey through the world behind the closet doors of children. We dive deep into the potential history of the monster culture, and whether Waternoose created the notion that children are dangerous to keep the scary monsters in power. Monsters, Inc. (2001), directed by Pete Doctor.
Pete Docter was just 21 when he joined Pixar and since then he’s been the creative force behind some of the most influential animated films of all time like Inside Out, Up, Wall-E, Monsters Inc., and Toy Story. His films are modern animated classics, with characters and stories that break new ground, thrilling generations of cartoon fans, and that is exactly what we celebrate on the Nickelodeon Animation Podcast. Pete shares with Hector what it was like to be one of the first animators at Pixar, how constraints can elevate storytelling, and he even drops a few hints at what's next for him and the animation wizards of Pixar.
Director Pete Doctor of Pixar's touching comedy "Up" continues to explore into the matters of the mind. His successful attempt to unravel the emotional activities of an 11-year-old girl has appealed to the sympathy of almost every viewer and critic. In China, the title of the film "Inside Out" is an almost shameful cliche. "Tou Nao Te Gong Dui," the awful translation constitutes a deplorable misrepresentation of the story's startling originality. In 2009 inspired by the changes in his daughter's personality as she grew older, Pete Doctor developed the idea of an animation film featuring human emotions. Since adventure stories are his strongest suit, he would have personified emotions explore the most exquisite and least understood item of nature's invention - the human brain. After consulting numerous psychologists, the filmmakers eventually decided on two parallel narratives, happening both inside a girl's mind and out in her real life.To kickstart the story, a girl named Riley moves with her parents from Minnesota to San Francisco. The change in environment and a series of unfortunate happenings cause emotional upheavals inside the 11-year-old. Her core emotions, Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger, are at a loss to help the girl get back on her feet. While trying to stop Sadness from infecting Riley's core memories, Joy is sucked out of the emotional headquarter with Sadness and end up in the storage area of Riley's long-term memories. In their absence, Disgust, Fear and Anger take charge of Riley's emotions, which leads to the change of the girl's personality. As Joy and Sadness try to get back to the headquarter, they meet Riley's imaginary friend, witness the collapse of Riley's personality islands, take the train of thought and visit the Imagination Land, the Subconscious and the Memory Dump. Many well-known Psychological concepts and terms are vividly represented, and above all, they make sense, according to the established theories on human psychology. After a moderately funny and most touching fashion, "Inside Out" is able to convey the importance of everyday happenings and human contact in the shaping of our personalities. A mishandled case may very well have far-reaching repercussion in the development of a child's character, this could came as a shocking revelation for moviegoers in China, where knowledge about the matters of the mind has not been widely cherished outside the academic circle. However informative this comedy adventure is, most viewers would probably find it easier to relate to it on the emotional basis. Interestingly, it is the things we can't remember that hit us the hardest. From the episode about Riley's imaginary friend to the demonstration of things being cleared from her memory bank, these scenes remind us about every tiny moment in our past that has made us who we are today. But the older we are, the fewer we can recall, and that's the saddest thing about life.
