This episode is titled "Penultimate Patrol". I had to look up the meaning of that word. Now that I know the definition, the title is very fitting. Penultimate just means next to last. As this is the next to last episode... I get the joke. Just when we thought we were rid of Cyborg, they bring him back in. Why must DC punish us? We get a little bit of the impetus behind why Eric Morden became Mr. Nobody...unless that is just something he made up to help bait his trap for Doom Patrol. Cyborg re-installs GRID and is able to locate the Beard Hunter using the tracking device Rita planted on him. They find that he is now a resident of Danny the Street. Jane was about to torture some answers out of the Beard Hunter when Danny the Street confessed he knew where Chief was being held. Mr. Nobody had him in the white space on the comic book pages. The place where there is no content. Flex Mentallo is able to open a portal into the white space (after a brief mistake of flexing the wrong muscle and causing a little inadvertent pleasure). Once inside the white space the Doom Patrol confronts Mr. Nobody. They believe they have defeated him only to find out it was part of his plan. Mr. Nobody convinces Chief the only way to escape is to "Let the truth set you free". Chief agonizes over this decision, but ultimately comes clean with the group. The accidents that gave them powers and changed their lives forever.... weren't accidents! The Chief orchestrated each event. Will the group support Chief? Will they leave him with Mr. Nobody? Will they rage and destroy the Chief in front of Mr. Nobody (which is probably what he wants anyway? Let us know in the comments. Doom Patrol has no problems bringing on some of the more obscure characters from DC Universe. Episode 10 - Hair Patrol is no exception. In this episode we are introduced to the Beard Hunter. This guy can track anyone down through space and time by ingesting their essence.... through their beard hair. Just imagine that clump of gook you use Drano to clear out in your bathroom sink. This guy eats that stuff and is able to know everything about you. The Bureau of Normalcy recruits the Beard Hunter to find the Chief. There are several cut scenes that give us some more background on the Chief. We find out he spends a few years in the frozen wilderness with an ancient tribeswoman. This woman seems to be immortal and has the ability to summon a huge "owlbear" looking creature. This episode is not one of our favorites, but it is still pretty interesting. It seems like the Doom Patrol is not getting any closer to finding and saving the Chief. It doesn't seem like they are really focusing very hard on the task either. The episodes seem to be just enough to keep us interested until the next week. There better be a big payoff in the season finale or we might not watch season 2. You can string us along for a while, but you eventually need to give us the goods. Do you agree with us that Doom Patrol seems to be wandering aimlessly? Let us know in the comments. We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332. Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters

We're back! This time instead of diving into your favorite, well-known characters, we're tackling a group that's a little less known: The Doom Patrol. This episode is bit different from other Character Corners we've done since there's not a whole lot of material to pull from for the Doom Patrol. This is a group that ended their first run in the late 70's with the entire team being killed off. We start off our discussion by talking about the comic landscape in the 60's and the claim from one of the Doom Patrol creators (Arnold Drake) that Stan Lee stole the idea of the X-Men from Doom Patrol. While we don't think Stan Lee stole the concept, it does lead to an interesting question: Why did creations like the X-Men & Fantastic Four take off while Doom Patrol failed to really connect? After the Doom Patrol was killed off in the 70's, other creators tried to resurrect them and get them to catch on but not with a lot of success. A lot of writers that have tried to tackle the Doom Patrol even fully admit that at the time, they weren't doing the team justice because they weren't nailing what made these characters so unique and special over at DC. And then Grant Morrison took over.  Grant Morrison's run on Doom Patrol can be best described as a Clusterfuck of Weirdness and while that might seem like we're speaking negatively about it, it's just the opposite. Morrison's run is probably the definitive run one what the Doom Patrol is and what makes them so unique. Morrison leaned into his own unique viewpoint of the world and created a run that was full of unique and strange villains (Red Jack, The Brotherhood of Dada, the Scissor Men, the Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E.) and parodies like his Punisher parody, The Beard Hunter. Honestly, if you understand Morrison's Doom Patrol run on your first reading, you should get yourself checked out. That said, it's compelling, interesting and is the most significant when it comes to the Doom Patrol. Give the episode a listen and let us know what you think. In their last CASTING FROM THE WRECKAGE episode of 2017, Elise and Dave move from the ridiculous Adventure of the Beard Hunter to Liza Radley's sublime emergence in an impossibly real place. Like issues #29/#30, these two issues show Morrison expanding the scope of his run on the title, veering off into Dave Sim-style industry-and-superhero subculture satire in #45 (without the 1991 Sim's viewpoint, thankfully) and then reconnecting with the core Doom Patrolers in #46 at a more affecting level than ever before. We get some more of that candleguy, another clock-faced motherfucker, Dave's favourite Simon Bisley cover, and some ominous quasi-revelations about the chief.     Theme song: The Revelators - "Don't Look at me When I'm Looking at You"   You can always write us at anotherkindofdistance@gmail.com, or contact us through our Facebook Page or our Twitter accounts @milescoverdale and @rhodaAF709  We're on all of the podcast delivery services, including iTunes, TuneIn radio and Stitcher, so please rate/review us there, if you can! Finally, as suggested by listener Jay, here's an Amazon link to Dave's time travel novel, Hypocritic Days (published by Insomniac Press), which is set in the pulp magazine and film worlds of the early 1930s. Please do let us know if you check it out.   Original Another Kind of Distance artwork by Lee McClure
