In Cyborg Fever, acclaimed writer Laurie Sheck brings us a probing and lyrical philosophical fiction in the spirit of Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, and Donna Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto that enacts an incisive and moving exploration into what it means to be human in the age of AI and increasing transhumanism.Throughout Cyborg Fever, many strange, surprising facts appear: an artist clones a flower from his DNA and the DNA of a petunia, an astronaut is playing golf on the moon, a mathematician on a rest cure rethinks the life of Shakespeare, and particles and antiparticles collide at lightning speed beneath the green hills of Switzerland and France. Threaded throughout, one question lingers: in this age of AI and genetic engineering, how can we come to know more fully what it means to love and be human among the wonders and destructions we have wrought on Earth?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

A Nash Holos Feature Interview with Nick Buderatsky, a patriotic Ukrainian volunteer who was mentored by legendary combat medic Taira and went on to become a civilian paramedic working on Ukraine's front lines, including Avdiivka and Irpin. Despite being injured himself, he helped save countless lives — including in Bucha and Irpin, where he set up a mobile field hospital modeled after a M.A.S.H. unit (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) following the 2022 massacre. He also is an IT specialist and helped Ukrainian soldiers innovate and improvise when western support lagged. I met Nick back in 2015 when he took me to visit a Donetsk airport Cyborg in a military hospital in Kyiv. It may be the one thing The SBU English Club categorically is not—writing advice. Top 10 Easy Ways to Plot a Scene! Top 3 Things to NEVER put in Dialogue! As much as we joke, there's no such thing as writing points. The answer to any writing question is always “it depends”.So when you're an authortuber, say iWriterly, and you build a brand of laws about writing and a fanbase who knows your maxims by heart, it can be hard to write a book of your own. Sometimes, you break writing rules on purpose, and at other times you do it by accident. The end result is the same. The Cyborg Tinkerer is not a good book, in our opinion. But COULD it have been? Was the outplaced hate for this book the result of a mismatch between Meg LaTorre's YouTube audience and the kind of people that would like a book of this… caliber???Andrew (he/him) and Jay (they/them) travel to a magical place untouched by booktok, and unravel the steamy steampunk snarky whatever the heck else secrets within!
Until recently, no one could access the detailed contents of your mind directly the way only you can. This level of protection of our mental data was guaranteed by the way we are built biologically – and it can no longer be taken for granted. In Cyborg Rights: Extending Cognition, Ethics, and the Law (Routledge, 2025) S. Orestis Palermos considers the ethical and legal implications of the extended mind thesis – the idea that information-processing technologies are not merely tools but literal parts of our minds. While this thesis remains controversial, there is little doubt that technological devices can push information that coheres in an integrated way with your thoughts – for example, when your phone presents photographs of last year's holiday on today's anniversary. Such mind extensions create new vulnerabilities to invasions of mental privacy, freedom of thought, and protection from personal assault. Palermos, who is assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Ioannina, articulates these new problems and explores what levels of protection we should adopt in the face of them, up to the point of making it technologically impossible to access or manipulate your extended mental contents. S. Orestis Palermos is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at University of Ioannina, in Greece. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to the fifth season of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's September, so that means it's time for our “Mechtember” series, where we cover movies involving all things robotic!! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Bill Mueller discuss one of the strangest Terminator mockbusters, 1990's Class of 1999!1 million Megabytes! Robo-spanking! Impressive run-down locations and production design! Amazing costumes, including a coat that would make Prince jealous! Violent teenage gang members in a lawless land still choosing to go to school for some reason! A school principal endangering his own daughter! Fun pyrotechnics and stunts! Weapons hidden in stubby arms! Green robot fuel! An early Nine Inch Nails needle drop! A kitchen cabinet full of WD-40! Great (but silly) robot FX from Short Circuit's Eric Allard! A script that feels like two different movies squished together! A mostly unknown cast with the exceptions of Malcolm McDowell, Pam Grier, and Stacy Keach rocking one of the craziest rat tails you've ever seen! Grade A schlock with a fantastic third act, from the director of Commando and accomplished cinematographer Mark Irwin, this tale of technology and education gone wrong plays like George Jetson's worst nightmare! In addition, everyone briefly chats about their mutual enjoyment of James Gunn's Superman, while Bill talks about Brad Pitt's F1, and Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Weapons, Liam Neeson's The Naked Gun, Nobody 2, The Conjuring: Last Rites, Caught Stealing, and the French thriller, Night Call! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. On today's episode of The Right Time, Bomani Jones is joined by Spencer Hall, host of the Shutdown Fullcast podcast, to discuss "futuristic" athletes. The show begins with Bo telling the story about the first time he heard about Usain Bolt (4:59) and why a gold medal wasn't an option when running against Bolt during his prime (9:39). They move on to reminiscing about Randy Moss, where Spencer talks about the first time he saw Moss play at Marshall vs Army (13:38) and why he may be the most perfect football player who has ever lived (17:50). After the break, Bo and Spencer converse about Cam Newton being a one-man team at Auburn (25:48) and why Newton still would've gone #1 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft despite the future Hall of Famers in it (28:42). They round out the show by saying why LeBron James is the best open court basketball player ever (33:00) and why we'll never see dominance quite like Tiger Woods ever again (45:57) and why the ceiling does not exist for Victor Wembanyama.
