We're hopping aboard a nuclear submarine and bringing High School Slumber Party's Brian Rodriguez with us as we talk about The Fate of the Furious! After Joe talks about a possible ghost hotel (spoiler: it's not) and Joey whines about AMC Theaters, we race down Alligator Alley in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (20:40) before tackling the Cuban Mile in the Fate of the Furious (40:20). We discuss whether Cipher and Jakob's lives intersect before F9 before diving deep into where the entities "Vin Diesel" and "Dom Toretto" and "Mark Sinclair" begin and end. Also: was Brian O'Conner not the first "Buster"? Are there more Toretto siblings we haven't yet met? Can we bring the beloved character of Girl back into the fold? If it's the end of the world, or the end of a way of life, or even just the end of a really bad day, mightn't a person turn toward God? But that option doesn't present itself in most modern stories. Hosts Timothy Deal and Nick Hayden examine the unconscious naturalism in many of today's most popular plots and examine how the absence of a supernatural worldview affects such stories. Then, in the second half, they present their annual Summer Movie Review, including Jungle Cruise, Free Guy, F9, Luca, Black Widow, and, of course, Shang-Chi. So, if you've ever felt we didn't need midichlorians to explain the Force, or wondered why post-apocalyptic worlds don't discuss an increase in (non-cultic) belief in God, you've come to the right podcast. Listen in to episode 122 of Derailed Trains of Thought, your premiere podcast on storytelling for the creator and the consumer.
Before the rise of the Delta Variant, we had the chance to see a few movies in theaters, A Quiet Place part 2, F9, Black Widow, The Suicide Squad, and Candyman to name a few. We hope to have episodes on all of those out soon. A Quiet Place Part 2, directed by John Krasinski, as well as starring him briefly along with Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, and Millicent Simmonds A Quiet Place II, John Krasinski, World Premiere was 3/8/2020, covid delayed release theatrically to 5/28/2021 This is a continuation of the first film with a few more hints at more of the overall backstory about what led to the post-apocalyptic world the movie takes place in. A worthwhile sequel, but some aspects I feel could have used a little more attention. The opening sequence depicting the arrival was done very well. I have always been a fan of the slow transition from normal to invasion, for lack of a better term. You know a secret that the characters don't but there's nothing you can do but watch and wait. War of the Worlds, both the original and Spielberg's remake, and M. Night's “Signs” are perfect examples of this as well. It sets up great tension in otherwise mundane and routine tasks, as seen in this film, going to the store and watching a little league baseball game. The fireball in the sky was ominous, but not over the top and I liked how people didn't “freak out” but more hastily moved on with a hint of urgency instead of all out chaos. This did a good job of filling in some missing details the audience wanted after watching the first film. It also very naturally and subtly added a moment that would payoff later between Millicent Simmonds and Cillian Murphy later in the film using the ASL gesture for “Dive.” The reintroduction of Cillian Murphy's character and the violent group at the marina did a great job of building out the world we got a glimpse of in the first film. Most of the encounters are with people who have lost hope and are just trying to survive, by any means necessary, even if it is at the expense of someone else. The sequences with the creatures were more frightening and visceral that we've seen and had a lot of good jump scares to go along with that. At the beginning, it seemed at times that John Krasinki's character was more aware of the creatures' sensitivity to sound that he should have been during the first wave of the attack. The son character seemed out of place as if the filmmakers were not sure what to do with his character. Also, what was up with the jump scare revealing that Cillian Murphy's character kept his wife's body at the compound? It was a beat that was not explained, nor did it go anywhere. The film's abrupt end is in line with the first film, but one half of the Brothers Brotastic felt there should be a little more breathing room. Clearly seeing the first film is a prerequisite, but it may have helped to recap some things at the beginning. I did not have a chance to rewatch the first film, so any themes or carryovers from Part 1 may not be immediately obvious, and connections may be missed. Overall, this was a worthwhile sequel. It was nuanced while maintaining the same look and feel as the original film. It did not stray too far from what people loved about its predecessor and breathed in some new life that looks to take this film into a much anticipated Part 3. I overall felt my experience seeing this film physically was a little lackluster, and I'm not sure if that is because of the movie, or if it was being back in the theater for the first time in months and maybe being kind of scared, but I'm glad I saw this in theaters, and would be willing to watch this again. 2 tickets.

We're getting closer and closer to "catching up" to F9, and our latest stop is Deckard Shaw's roaring rampage of revenge in Furious 7! After catching up in extracurricular activites, we meet Fonzie and Fabio in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (17:45) before squaring off with Shaw once again. Joining us to talk about Furious 7 is Drea Clark (Maximum Film!), who -- unlike many of our recent, less sophisticated guests -- goes to bat for and defends Paul Walker and Brian O'Conner. We talk about the many "dares" behind making these movies, what Ludacris is like when he's just "Chris," and what Han would be like as a roommate. We also wonder if Shaw was the one who blew up 1327 and discuss how to fix the villain problem in Furious 7. Today's show is a discussion and review of the 2021 independent film Werewolves Within. Based on the 2016 Ubisoft virtual reality game released on PS4 and Occulus, Werewolves Within was released to virtually no fanfare. In fact, the film received only a limited film release and then was released globally on VOD. To make matters worse, the film had the dubious honor of being released the same weekend as F9. F9's opening weekend box office debut casted a shadow over every other film obscuring any attention Werewolves Within would have had. Kenny listed Werewolves Within on our June 25th Friday Picks article. Kenny felt the quirky horror comedy whodunnit featuring a charming Sam Richardson would be a perfect distraction film for the weekend. Once Kenny watched it, he was hooked and couldn't stop talking about it. Of course, once Del watched it, they immediately worked on a script and the result is this podcast. Join Kenny and Del for a full discussion and breakdown. The Brothers will dive into pre-production, film performance, writing, direction, acting, scenes, and more. We hope our discussion will not only entertain you, but will also spark your interest in this film. Shang-Chi earned a total of $34.7 million domestically according to Box Office Mojo in its second box office weekend falling only 54% from it's premiere weekend. Shang-Chi has now earned $144.5M domestically and $259M worldwide. In comparison Black Widow fell 68% in its second box office weekend but benefited from a healthy $60M from Disney+ premiere sales in its premiere weekend. Other Disney second-weekend drops have been varied, with “Jungle Cruise” shedding 55%, “Cruella” 49% and “Free Guy” 35%. Universal's “F9,” another pandemic box office success, opened to $70 million in June and dropped 57% to $30.1 million in its second frame. Pre-pandemic Marvel releases have traditionally held well in their second weekends: “Avengers: Endgame” declined by 59%, “Captain Marvel” by 56%, “Thor: Ragnarok” by 54%, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" by 56%, “Doctor Strange” by 50% and “Ant-Man” by 57%. “Black Panther” enjoyed the most slight second-weekend drop in 2018, with just 45% after opening to a massive $202 million over Presidents Day weekend. The strength of Shang-Chi's Labor Day weekend opening seems to have inspired Disney to commit to debuting its remaining theatrical releases exclusively in theaters for the rest of the year, including Marvel Studios' Eternals. Disney announced that the rest of its domestic release slate for the year will honor a theatrical window ranging from a minimum of 30-45 days per film although the 30 day window only applies to Encanto according to the exclusive reported by Variety. The term “minimum” seems to point to the fact that Disney could extend that 30-45 day window should they prove to be hits and there is an audience to attend in person. Marvel Announces Four Unknown Films Scheduled for 2024 https://collider.com/new-marvel-movies-coming-in-2024/ Walt Disney Studios has updated its upcoming release schedule, which now includes four untitled Marvel films dated for 2024. These include newly announced films scheduled for February 16th, May 3rd, July 26th, and November 8th. Marvel has previously announced all of its movies on the way through Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, scheduled for May 5, 2023. After Guardians, there are still three other untitled Marvel films planned for the year, however, the addition of four more unknown Marvel films in 2024 and their release dates is entirely new. Possible films to fill those slots that are currently in development and without a known release schedule include Fantastic Four Deadpool 3 Blade Avengers-Level Team up to end the phase (not confirmed in development) Could be linked to Russo Brothers story from last week Captain America Sequel Possible X-Men MCU – Non-Marvel Studios Sony Won't Send Any Major Blockbusters Directly to Streaming Platforms https://www.cbr.com/sony-no-major-films-to-streaming/ Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra is insisting Spider-Man: Far From Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and other blockbusters will retain their theater exclusivity window and not go straight-to-streaming. "There is a higher bar theatrically to get films into theaters so you will probably not see as many films going directly to theaters," Vinciquerra said during a media conference. He conceded that some of Sony's smaller films might not be viable for theatrical release in the current climate but promised, "We have about 12 to 15 major films a year distributed to theaters and will do the same going forward." Vinciquerra pointed out the rise in piracy rates since other studios decided to implement day-and-date streaming releases, labeling it "a big concern" moving forward. The executive noted that Sony is in a unique position as it does not have a streaming service of its own, instead acting as an "arms dealer" in the ongoing streaming wars, able to put its content up for auction. He was quick to clarify, "But you won't see our major films go that way." Sony recently changed the name of its Spider-Man franchise from the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters to Sony's Spider-Man Universe, suggesting it has larger plans for the web-slinger moving forward. With rumors hinting at a live-action Spider-Verse crossover, the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home could potentially bridge the gap between Sony's animated and live-action Spider-Man franchises by incorporating Miles Morales. Writer Regrets One Thing About Doctor Strange Episode https://screenrant.com/what-if-doctor-strange-episode-4-writer-regret/ "When you're writing animation, you're writing so far into the future that you can't think four years down the line. That Doctor Strange episode, I wrote in February of 2019. I think I should've called it a Nexus Point instead of an Absolute Point. The Loki scripts weren't even written yet, so that animatic locked before Loki even finished their scripts because you're always writing about two years ahead of animation. It's kind of intense and insane." Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D./Agent Carter Hayley Atwell to Voice Lara Croft in Netflix's ‘Tomb Raider' Anime Series https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/hayley-atwell-anime-tomb-raider-lara-croft-casting-netflix-1235062859/ Hayley Atwell has been cast in Netflix and Legendary Television's upcoming “Tomb Raider” anime series. Atwell will voice the franchise hero, Lara Croft, in the new series based on Square Enix's iconic game. This upcoming series marks the character's anime debut. The story will pick up after the events of the “Tomb Raider” video-game reboot trilogy, charting a new adventure (in new territory) for the globetrotting Lara Croft 25 years after her first game launched. Atwell is best known for portraying Peggy Carter across the Marvel universe, in such films as “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Ant-Man” And “Avengers: Endgame,” as well as in her own TV series “Marvel's Agent Carter.” Her other live-action credits include “Conviction,” “Criminal U.K.” and “Howards End” for TV and “Brideshead Revisited,” “The Duchess,” “Christopher Robin” and “Blinded by the Light” in film. Up next she can be seen in the highly-anticipated “Mission: Impossible 7” opposite Tom Cruise. Netflix Defenders Rosario Dawson Books A Room In Disney's ‘Haunted Mansion' Movie https://deadline.com/2021/09/rosario-dawson-haunted-mansion-movie-casting-1234828943/ Rosario Dawson has been set to join LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish in Haunted Mansion, Disney's latest live-action film based on one of its theme park attractions. Justin Simien is directing a script from Katie Dippold, and the pic, which also recently added Owen Wilson to the cast, is now gearing up to begin shooting next month. We welcome back Fast & Furious superfan Heather Antos to talk about F9 -- and this time, we're watching the Director's Cut! Before Heather joins us, though, we catch up on the past week and imagine a viable alternative to the Han and Gisele trilogy we are going to continue to attempt to will into existence. Then, we do a deep dive into the F9 Director's Cut (22:15): what's new, what's (maybe) new, and what's extended. We pick our favorites, discuss why things hit the cutting room floor, and wonder whether or not this is a "better" version of the movie than the theatrical cut. Then, we roll out with Monica Fuentes in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (50:50) before welcoming in Heather to talk about F9 (1:04:05). After establishing how much of a fan she's become with a truly ambitious way to watch the final films in the series, we run through her favorite moments, least favorite parts, and what she believes could have been done better -- including a much smarter way of implementing the running Star Wars jokes. Extra special shout-out to Ben Milliman, Jake Freer, Alex Elonen, Nick Burris, Brian Rodriguez (High School Slumber Party), Hayley Gerbes, Christian Larson, Justin Kleinman, and Michael McGahon for joining at the “Interpol's Most Wanted” level or above! The Save Room is back with our BIG Summer Movie Bash. That's right, we're tossing the video games aside and talking all the movies we saw this summer. From big marquee titles like F9, A Quiet Place Part 2, Green Knight, Luca and Black Widow to streamable movies like Nobody, Phantasm, and Fear Street. If we saw it with our eyes, you're gonna hear about it with your ears! This episode is full of debauchery and is our longest episode to date, so grab a beer put your feet up, and join in on the fun with us because movies are back, baby! ———————————————- Intro track “Phantasm Theme (Nightcrawler Remix)” courtesy of NewRetro Wave
WE'RE BACK AND THIS TIME WE REALLY MEAN IT! This is our first episode recording together in over a year! Thank goodness it was over a great movie. But how great? Does Shang-Chi beat out the other good films we've seen this year? Why is F9 so bad? All this and more on this week's episode, what are you waiting for?
We're headed back to the streets of Tokyo -- this time with Aaron Neuwirth (Out Now with Aaron and Abe, We Live Entertainment) -- to figure out where Elle, Jakob, and Mr. Nobody were during The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift! We talk about the Dreamcast, Back to the Future, and Possession (1981), preview the F9 director's cut (and rumored F10 title), and watch Monica Fuentes roll up in a delivery truck in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (27:35). Then, we fly across the Pacific with Aaron riding (flying, I guess, I just said fly, why would it be riding) shotgun (is this a thing in planes) for Tokyo Drift (41:45). After reworking a couple of the "lightning round" questions and getting the biggest endorsement for Roman's character that we've ever heard, we dive into Tokyo Drift and hear Aaron compare it to a movie we'd never considered before, but makes perfect sense. We also come up with a new movie to write (that hopefully Brian Rodriguez *of* High School Slumber Party would cover) before spending a lot of time to figure out how The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift fits into the F9 timeline. Another busy fortnight has come and gone and with it comes another packed episode of News & Reviews. We talk about recent streamer releases 'Cruella' and 'Cinderella'. The latest high octane installment in the increasingly ridiculous 'Fast and the Furious' franchise, GI Joe origins story 'Snake Eyes', sci fi horror 'Demonic' and the brilliant British horror 'Censor'.
Our LAST episode...until October. Join us as we gush over "F9", talk about our hopes and dreams for future installments in the Fast series, and announce what the future of the show looks like! STOP! For the love of everything that is wonderful in this world! Just STOP making these movies. We have now come to a point of no return. Once your characters are in space for no reason what so ever, you have lost your franchise. This series has been dead since the first movie 20 years ago (Damn we are old) Do not waste a second of your life watching this disaster. However do download this episode to hear what we think of F9. Trust us....our review is better than the movie.
We're heading Down Under -- and then out to the Bonneville Salt Flats -- to talk about The World's Fastest Indian! Before we get to the movie that Hayley Gerbes picked for us on Patreon, we talk about the characters or actors who could join the franchise in F10 and watch a deleted scene from F9 before heading to Miami and getting answers to our geography questions in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (26:25). Then, we hop aboard our 1920 motorcycles and blaze our way through The World's Fastest Indian (36:15). We talk about similarities between this and another one of Hayley's picks, how Anthony Hopkins has always been an old man, and the movie's repeated attempts at creating conflict... before immediately making everything totally okay. Here they go again. Mike and Anthony are almost at the finish line with the Fast & Furious Saga. Today they take on F9, where we have a new wrestler-turned-actor, and another cameo from a rapper. The formula continues. We also find out that Dom has more family than we knew about, and Cipher is still trying to control the whole flipping world. And, of course, the guys have to discuss...the Fiero...in space. Yes, it happened. Taking a break from our regular programming, this week we're discussing what we've all been watching in between our coverages. Trending movies and series, throwbacks, and more, find out what's been on our radar lately. On this episode, we take a look at Snake Eyes, Nine Perfect Strangers, Hacks, CODA, and much, much more. PLUS, a live reaction to the new trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home which debuted in the middle of recording this episode.
We're returning to orbit once again to talk about F9 (for the fourth time) with Kevo Risse and Nico Vasilo of Husbands Talking More or Less! Before they join us, we talk about new dishwashers and new movies, the release date for F10, and the special features coming to the F9 Blu-ray disc (plus more details in the back half!) before spending our (thankfully) final minute in the demolition derby parking lot in the 2F2F Minute (29:40). Then, the HTML guy drops by (38:55) to talk about F9 (and, as you may suspect, a whole lot of X-Men and Daredevil). We discuss whether rewriting Dom's backstory to be more fragile is good or bad, what #JusticeForHan really means, and if F9 satisfied or just felt like filler. After taking some time off we're back! And what better way to come back than a movie about FAMILY. That's right we're joining Dominic Toretto and crew in the latest installment of the fast and furious franchise “F9” so buckle up and join us on Are You For Reel?
The Nerds are back this week with another episode to rant, rave, talk about and discuss: The Abyss, Ed Asner, character actors, dieting, tv shows they are looking forward to returning, What If episode 1 and finally Fast 9, F9, Fast and Furious 9, whatever. Enjoy! Contact us for topic discussions or questions at: Disagreeablenerd@gmail.com Follow us at: https://www.instagram.com/disagreeablenerd/ https://mobile.twitter.com/disagreeablenr
We're taking a brief break between episodes about F9 to talk about Fast & Furious 6 with Dan Scully (I Like to Movie Movie)! Before Dan joins us, we share extracurricular activities as Joey's audio is peppered with a thunderstorm, talk about Michael Rooker's character, and watch Brian and Roman scrap in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (20:00). Then, Dan swings by to talk about (spoiler!) his favorite movie in the franchise, Fast & Furious 6 (29:40). We share some new theories about Kurt Russell (and Fastiverse dads and father figures in general) before discussing what it'd take to get Gal Gadot back in the franchise. We also wonder if Mia was sowing future seeds of reconciliation and (possibly) the most iconic image in any of these movies. Then, in a very pleasant surprise, Dan gets a new character (!) in the quiz, which shouldn't come as a surprise; he had a life before you knew him, you know. With F9 now available to rent on VOD, we're covering the movie yet again, this time with Cara Gael O'Regan! Before she joins, though, we debate whether Brian and Bilkins fly to California to get Roman from his demolition derby, talk about the merits of modern movies converted to black and white, and the upcoming 4K release of F9 (and what we hope to get from the “director's cut”). Then, we count tires in what we're calling “the calm before the storm” in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (29:30) before welcoming in Cara to talk about all things F9 (38:10). We find out what she loves (and how that ties into what she fears), as well as her dream future for the franchise. We talk about Stasiak's improbable career acceleration, which haircut best suits Cipher, and the questionable life lessons being imparted upon baby Brian. Also, Cara shares an update on how The Race to Beat POTS turned out. (Want to donate? Go to dysautonomiainternational.org.) Should you drive off your quarantine cliff and go to the movie theatre to see “F9”? Paula and Adam review not "Fate of the Furious", "Furious 7", or "Fast & Furious 6".... but Fast 5” to let you know if "F9" is worth the risk. In the words of Dom,"Let's get to work." Will we see Boba Fett? Will there be a Stormtrooper vs Clone Trooper civil war? What are the crafty Kaminoans really trying to do? Inspired by listener voicemail, we speculate how THE BAD BATCH season might conclude along with our wish lists. We learn all about the ICCC convention coming to Nashville next year as promoter Michael Havens joins us In The Cantina. Michael gives us all the deets about the con and shares some stories, including a great one about William Shatner. Plus, Mark Hamill makes some of his first interview comments about his cameo in THE MANDALORIAN and we have the highlights. Plus, F9 actor Sung Kang will be in the upcoming OBI-WAN KENOBI series and he describes the vibe on set, we review the new Jaxxon Hasbro Black Series action figure and more. Chut Chut!
On today's ship is sailed by the one and only Tony Digs. Tone and the boys jump right back into the F9 talk as the group is divided on if/when they will ever go to theaters and see it.
