Mitch Keller had the Nats on lockdown—five scoreless through 5 on just 62 pitches—before he was lifted and the bullpen let it slip, turning a 3–0 lead into a 6–5 loss. Doug and DiNardo break down the decision to pull Keller, the ensuing relief carousel (and why “just get outs” wasn't the plan), and a bizarre base-running gaffe at the plate that erased the tying run. We hit the late push too: Nick Yorke's pinch-hit AB, Joey Bart's RBI knock for Henry Davis, and how a passed ball + non-competitive pitch compounded the damage. Offensively, there were real positives—Jared Triolo (2 hits), Spencer Horowitz (2 hits with a homer), Nick Gonzales (2-for-4), Bryan Reynolds RBI—while Andrew McCutchen's 0-for-4 and apparent back issue are something to monitor. Plus: what this says about Don Kelly's in-game leash, the bullpen's volatility (Sisk/Nicolas, etc.), and the bigger roster-building conversation. Poni isn't letting himself get sucked up by the hoopla of the preseason, because that has certainly never happened before. He thinks people are fools because they still have Mike Tomlin as the head coach. Poni made sure to let people know he will not be a sucker this season because Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers won't get the Steelers over the hump. Do you have any hope of the Steelers being a contender as long as Mike Tomlin is the head coach? Bucco Minute – Could MLB be due for a realignment in the not-too-distant future? One mock of the divisions would have the Pirates in the NL East with the Phillies, Mets and Nationals.
Former Steeler Bryant McFadden joined the show. BMac talked about his trip to Saint Vincent a couple weeks ago to watch his former team practice. We got into the hold-ins of Cam Heyward and Chris Boswell, and Bryant said Boswell is just as valuable. What will it take for the Steelers to get back to the winning formula they had while winning championships? BMac told a good training camp story with Ryan Clark. How would BMac align the defensive backfield? Bucco Minute – The Pirates beat the Cubs thanks to a Jack Suwinski HR. What is the future for Andrew McCutchen? Open Phone Friday.

Bucco Minute – We reacted to Greg Brown predicting the Pirates to make a move ‘beyond our wildest dreams' in free agency.
With the guys stuck in traffic heading to Studio B, Donny had to start the show. He reacted to the words from Mike Tomlin on his philosophy of playing guys, or not doing so, in the preseason. Donny made the argument that Tomlin should play most of the starters, if healthy. Several big-name QBs play around the league and multiple teams in better spots than the Steelers play their starters at least a little bit. The guys have arrived. They gave thoughts on Mike Tomlin not playing most starters in the second preseason game. Is it the right play? Bucco Minute – We reacted to Greg Brown predicting the Pirates to make a move ‘beyond our wildest dreams' in free agency.
ESPN has taken an interesting route to the Cam Heyward discussion. Why didn't Heyward take a ‘prove it' deal last year? Poni doesn't think anything is solved soon and thinks the crowd reaction on Saturday night will be interesting. We also had a gripe with the Steelers countdown, sighting Artie Burns as a ‘fan favorite.' Is Kraig at fault? Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. We reacted to the Pirates-Brewers series, which resulted in a sweep. How do the Brewers keep doing it? Matt talked about the culture created in Milwaukee as the Brewers are about to make the playoffs for the 7th time in 8 seasons. Matt said it all starts with a star and building great, in-house talent. He also lauded the signings and trades made to make the team in Milwaukee what it is. Matt talked about the wear and tear of the mind that could happen as a starting pitcher. The guys asked Matt about Oneil Cruz going downhill since the All Star Break. Bucco Minute – The Pirates were swept by the Brewers in Milwaukee.
We started with more fallout about the Cam Heyward contract ‘dispute' that spurred up yesterday with the All-Pro wanting a pay raise. Fans have gone from loving Heyward and his legacy in Pittsburgh to calling him a ‘diva' and ‘distraction' at training camp. We took some calls on the topic. Chris Boswell is getting out of this scot-free because Cam Heyward is taking up the headlines. How will this work out? More calls. Bucco Minute – 6 shutout innings from Paul Skenes, who is reportedly ‘optimistic' about where the team is going. There was also a man that pooped in a pizza box in Butler County.

Bucco Minute. Mullsy says that he is showing that he likes the Hayes trade, just in a weird manner. Every caller agrees that the Hayes trade was a success. One caller called the Hayes trade “absolutely amazing”. Poni makes the point that both Quinn Priester and Clay Holmes have been good since the Pirates traded them, and says that he doesn't want Ben Cherington making trades. Mullsy asks why Cherington is still employed. A caller says that the Hayes trade was just a salary dump. Mullsy says that Ke'Bryan would be a massive bargain if he could hit at all.
Ke'Bryan Hayes traded to the Reds for reliever Taylor Rogers and prospect Sammy Stafura. Stafura is a top ten prospect in the Reds organization. The guys like the trade. Mullsy is afraid that Hayes will go to Cincinnati and start hitting. Poni thinks that Ke'bryan hated Pittsburgh. Mullsy says that Ke'Bryan needs to take accountability for playing terribly in Pittsburgh. Mullsy says that a change of scenery could work out for Ke'Bryan. Poni says that Paul Skenes should drive Hayes to the ballpark so that he can be in the lineup that faces him. People on twitter are saying that not even a hitter's park can make Ke'Bryan a good hitter. Poni really thinks that Hayes is just a terrible hitter, Mullsy thinks that the Pirates player development could be the problem. Poni mentions Hayes' constant terrible body language. Bucco Minute. The Steelers had their padded practice in Latrobe canceled for fans due to thunderstorms today. Instead, they held a walkthrough in the gym. The guys think Zach Frazier and Keeanu Benton would be good MMA fighters. Do more MMA fights end in knockout or submission? Payton Wilson says that the Steelers are determined to stop the run this year. The Steelers gave up 200 yards on the ground 1 time in 12 years, and then proceeded to let it happen 2 times in the last 4 games last season. Poni defends the Derrick Harmon pick, saying that their pass defense was not the issue down the stretch. The Steelers going over 8.5 wins is the most bet on win total at ESPN Bet, and the line has not moved. Bucco Auction House – Round 12. The guys forgot that Alexander Canario was still on the team. Donny gets Andrew McCutchen at 14+ homers. Poni gets 5+ Pirates trades before the deadline. Poni gets 1+ Bubba Chandler starts for the Pirates this year.
