Matt, a former closer, loves the idea of Mason Miller at the trade deadline because of the versatility it would allow the Pirates to have in their bullpen. He thinks a move like that makes the Buccos a top 2-3 team in the NL. Mullsy disagrees with this pretty strongly. The contract extension deadline is up, meaning that George Pickens will not get a new extension with the Cowboys and he will play the 2026 season under the franchise tag. The Astros just traded Lance McCullers, and did not get anything in return that will help them this year. The Astros are also closer to a playoff spot than the Pirates are. The Pirates have re-ordered part of their rotation for the second half of the season. Because Skenes and Ashcraft had the whole All-Star break to rest, they'll jump up in the rotation and it will be Jones-Ashcraft-Skenes to open up the 2nd half of the season. McCullers hasn't done much of anything in 5 years, but we're sure he will become a great pitcher again because that's how things work in Milwaukee. Poni had 3 names at the ready for the Pirates to target, all left-handed pitchers, heading into the trade deadline. The most attractive name was Robbie Ray, which could cost a pair of prospects, neither of which being in the MLB's Top 100. Is it worth looking into Kyle Freeland, who has been horrible for the Rockies? When was the last time the Pirates didn't have a player play in the All Star Game? Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. It took Anthony Mantha 2 weeks to sign with someone and that team was the New Jersey Devils. It was for less term and money than we expected, maybe due to his disappearing act in the playoffs. What is the Penguins' free agent strategy and how they are playing things with their young players?
