Chris Mueller does NOT like this hire in any way, shape, or form. Chris goes after Art Rooney and Omar Kahn for hiring an older version of Mike Tomlin and the worst option on the table. They picked the one option nobody wanted. The phone calls come fast and furious and not one call we took is a fan of this hire.Â
Jeff Hatthorn joins the show! What are his thoughts on the Steelers hiring Mike McCarthy to be the next head coach. Jeff says that the timing of it was weird and thought the Steelers would have waited to talk to the Rams candidates. Adam Crowley also joins to give his instant reaction to Mike McCarthy becoming the next Steelers Head Coach. It is a FIVE year deal for McCarthy, according to Gerry Dulac, and Mullsy is not happy.
Donny Football hops on. He was not as fired up starting the call as he was towards the end of the call. Donny says it is a sad state of affairs if Nate Scheelhaase and Chris Shula did not want the Steelers job. However, if they chose McCarthy over the other options it was a bad move.
"What is this guy doing?" - Joe Starkey on Art Rooney II hiring Mike McCarthy. Joe says Rooney was comfortable running it back with Mike Tomlin and he is, just the last names changed. The man that predicted the hire, Mark Kaboly, hops on with Mullsy. Nostraboly says that he got about a 10 minute heads up that this was happening. He says that if the Steelers get a good quarterback for the future but struggle doing so, it is still a win in Kaboom's eyes.
Andrew Fillipponi joins Chris live from NYC to talk about Mike McCarthy. Poni says that this could be all about Will Howard and McCarthy may work with Howard to be the guy. Could McCarthy bring Aaron Rodgers back?
The new music beds are making their presence known. Chris asks if they're AI. I don't believe they are. How should the Steelers change their defense? Should they bring back a majority of their defensive players or completely overhaul the unit?

Mark Kaboly joins the show! Mark says that if the Steelers don't hire a head coach until next week and the Rams win, we know the next Steelers coach is going to be a Rams guy. Kaboly says "not yet" if the Steelers are interested in Sean McDermott as a dark horse. Mark and Chris talk about local establishments representing their youth sports clubs. One of my baseball teams growing up was sponsored by a tavern that went out of business half way through the year, so we represented a defunct business. Mark answers how much Art Rooney II will be leaning on other people to help him make the decision. The Joe Hendry theme song will always irritate Mullsy and we love that. A discussion of old school WWF action figures takes place that unlocks memories I forgot I had. Who will still be on the roster next year for the Steelers?
The Donny Football Debrief: Eight Head Coaches have been traded, four of them have won Super Bowls with their new teams, can Mullsy name the four?
The Sean McDermott comment from Nick peaked Mullsy's interest. He dives a little bit more into the McDermott possibility of getting an interview. Where would McDermott rank in possible Steelers head coaching candidates?
Fair Game with Nick Farabaugh. Is it fair to say that the Steelers will hire one of the Rams coaches as their next head coach? Nick answers the question if the Steelers will have a new head coach this time next week. He says that a dark horse candidate to get an interview that hasn't is Sean McDermott.
A solo Mullsy show today. He starts off with a very simple question: Do fans trust Art Rooney II to make the right call and hire the next Steelers head coach? If Rooney II was willing to keep Mike Tomlin around after another embarrassing playoff performance, should that scare Steelers fans?
Jesse Marshall of the Athletic joins the show to answer if the Penguins could actually win a shootout. He says Stuart Skinner will need to be the guy to start in a shootout. He talks about the state of the team, being more competitive than a lot of people expected them to be, and looking at Mike Sullivan in a bad situation in New York. He does not expect them to stray away from the course of staying competitive and trying to get younger. Parker Wotherspoon has become the biggest X-Factor for the team this year. We play a game of "Stay or Go".Â
Sean McDermott was fired in Buffalo after the Bills fell to the Denver Broncos over the weekend. With Buffalo having a coaching opening, how far down is Pittsburgh on the "best possible opening" list? Buffalo and Baltimore are ahead of them right now. An argument can be made for others, especially with the Raiders having the number one pick. Who are the candidates that the Steelers have on their interview list that intrigue Donny the most?

Judge Donny – Should the Steelers be interested in a coach that already has head coaching experience?
Former Steelers Super Bowl champion Trai Essex joined the show. Trai says that Alex Highsmith is the player that the Steelers need to have a great game to have a chance against the Texans. He points out that Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell need to be the x-factors for the Steelers. The Texans defense is going up against a very young offensive line.
KDKA TV's Richie Walsh joined the show.
Steelers film junkie Derrick Bell from Pittsburgh Sports Now joined the show.
Who has to have a great game for the Steelers to win their first playoff game in almost 9 years? The guys said the Texans don't have a ton of ‘big' names, but they have a lot of really solid players. Poni shared a superstition he has picked up for Steelers games.
In this hour, Adam Crowley acknowledges the respectable states that the three major Pittsburgh pro sports teams seem to be in right now. Also, 93.7 The Fan's Jeff Hathhorn comes on The Fan Hotline. And "Who wants to be smarter than a plumber?" January 6, 2026, 7:00 Hour
The Other Side. Jeremy Conn joins to talk about the Ravens side of the ball ahead of the AFC North Championship Game.
Possibly the final Fair Game with Nick Farabaugh of the year!
Poni's birthday, phone calls, and Fair Game with Farabaugh
Will we hear "Fire Tomlin" chants on Sunday? Is it fair for those chants to even happen? If those chants were to happen before kickoff, is that fair?
'Fire Tomlin' chants, phone calls, Donny Football Debrief
TJ Watt will play against the Ravens on Sunday. Mark Kaboly joins to talk about how Watt will play, how much he will play, and more. More with Mark Kaboly. What needs to happen for the Steelers to win against the Ravens? Who will be the next quarterback next season if the Steelers bring back Mike Tomlin? Mark says that even if the Steelers lose, the Steelers should 'welcome' Aaron Rodgers back. Mark makes his prediction for the game on Sunday.
The Ravens have been running wild over the Steelers in recent memory. What do the Steelers need to do to beat the Ravens on Sunday?
Super Bowl Champion and former Pittsburgh Steeler Bryant McFadden joins the show! He gives his thoughts on the Steelers potential game plan before the AFC North Championship game this Sunday. He also gives some advice to Poni about life after 40.
What the Steelers need to do to win, Bryant McFadden, and The Other Side
Poni does not care if the Steelers win or lose on Sunday. Does he have the right mentality? He says he cannot get excited for one of the biggest games in the Steelers recent history because of their lack of success lately and the absence of DK Metcalf and James Washington. Also, Happy Birthday, Poni!

12-31-25 Pomp and Joe Full Show
What are the New Year's resolutions for each of the teams in Pittsburgh? What are Joe's and myself resolutions going into 2026?
Sean Gentille joins the show to talk about the best and worst Pittsburgh sports moment in 2025. He says that it is the lead up to the Pitt-Notre Dame game, not the game itself. It was the hype and fun that surrounded the Pitt program prior to the game. The Skenes Cy Young just reminds him how bad the Pirates are surrounding him.
Listeners chime in to talk about their lowest parts of the 2025 season from the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins. Jeff Patton from the Baseball Card Castle calls in to reveal his card of the day.
The biggest thing that happened in Pittsburgh sports in the year 2025 according to Mr. Starkey, was the loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the 2025 playoffs. He called it the low point of the Tomlin era until the game against the Browns this past Sunday. The Penguins needed a change and Mike Sullivan was fired. The Pirates moved on from Derek Shelton and brought in Don Kelly. Where has the change been for the Steelers as they have been at the head of average for over a decade?
