There is more optimism around the Pirates than there has been in roughly a decade. We have seen them make some moves between now and then, but going into the season, the team has the reigning Cy Young winner, the top prospect in all of baseball and added nearly 70 home runs this offseason. Chris thinks even the most pessimistic of fans have to acknowledge that the Pirates are better, at least on paper, than they have been in the last several seasons. Chris wants to see a massive jump after the team won just 71 games in 2025. It got better under Don Kelly, but they still weren't a .500 team under his watch. Would it be a disappointment if they don't make the playoffs? The potential work stoppage in 2027 should be scary. Chris won't be satisfied with a .500 season – he wants a playoff berth. What is an acceptable season for the 2026 Pirates? More calls on the Buccos. Is optimism high?

Paul Skenes spoke at Pirates City today as we quickly approach the 2026 season. The feeling from fans seems to be ‘cautious optimism.' We revisited a poll question from yesterday and over 50% think the Pirates will win 90 games instead of losing 90. We shared our current gut feel for the 2026 Buccos.

Bucco Minute – The geeks love the Pirates in 2026. Fangraphs has their win projection at 82.8 – second in the NL Central. Their projection also has them as the 6th best team in the National League.
The Pirates have signed Mike Clevinger, who pitched in the World Series back in 2016 as a rookie. He was a good starter before COVID, but since then, not so much. The guys don't think he will factor into their future plans after signing a minor league deal. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Pirates have their eyes on Framber Valdez, who is the biggest pitcher still on the market. Do they really have a shot at him though? Poni doesn't think the Pirates will be sellers at the deadline this season. Is there a better park for left-handed pitchers than PNC? The guys think the Buccos need another lefty even though the staff already carries a lot of promise.

ALL ACCESS w/ Aditi – Aditi said Brian Angelichio is ‘all ball' and raved about the abundance of experience he has working with different offenses. Aditi isn't sold Aaron Rodgers will be back next season, not only in Pittsburgh, but in the league. Donny Football Debrief – The NFL Draft renderings are out. Is Pittsburgh ready for one of the biggest events in the city's history? Is the draft exciting or boring?
Oneil Cruz is heading into 2026 needing to finally have that breakout season. He was ranked a top 10 CF in MLB, already. Where do we stand on that? Is he ready to take the next step? Working with a Platinum Glove winner this offseason to improve defense? We'll also talk a little Buccos in the WBC in this one. https://linktr.ee/bridgetobuctoberSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/bridge-to-buctober/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Intro, Sipping, VS, Buccos, Steelers, Penguins, Tennis, Romp
Jason Mackey joins the show to talk about which Pittsburgh team is closest to a title, what the Pirates will do at third base, what the Buccos will do with Andrew McCutchen, if Jake Mangum will get a significant role in Pittsburgh, who the starting shortstop will be, the youth movement on the Penguins, and more!
PG writer Jason Mackey joined the show. After the Pirates missed on big hitters the MLB Winter Meetings, Jason thinks they are truly in on conversations with the Rays for power-hitting infielder Brandon Lowe. He doesn't expect it to take a ton in return. Jason isn't sure if the Buccos will pull in a big-time guy, but thinks names like Jorge Polanco or Eugenio Suarez are possible. What else could be headed in the Pirates' direction?
A scary situation out of Steelers practice as TJ Watt was sent to a local hospital after a lung concern that took place while getting treatment at the facility. The Steelers have a 1-11 record, including the playoffs, without Watt on the field. Are they better backfilled than they were in the past? This is a big opportunity for Nick Herbig and possibly Jack Sawyer on Monday night. We compared it to the Tyrod Taylor situation with the Chargers back in 2020 that led to Justin Herbert getting his first start. An ESPN update on TJ Watt doesn't tell us much new. We revisited the 1 win the Steelers have without TJ Watt on the field. PG writer Jason Mackey joined the show. PG writer Noah Hiles joined the show. Noah said the offer to Kyle Schwarber from the Pirates was legitimate and actually higher than what he signed for, in AAV, with the Phillies. Noah said it's not worth celebrating because they didn't land the player, but this should mean the Pirates are willing to spend that money elsewhere. Noah didn't think it was a coincidence that the Pirates' offers were the ones that were openly put out there. Noah thinks it could tell other players that the Pirates are willing to spend, but it was probably leverage being played on both sides. How will the Pirates handle some of the other notable names on the market? Noah said Jorge Polanco is the top, realistic player on his list, but that shouldn't stop the Buccos from going after Ketel Marte. He said there are ways to get around a player's no-trade clause list, but it means they have to sweeten the deal. Noah believes the Pirates cannot show up ‘empty-handed' to Pirate Fest this year after the words that have been thrown around this off-season. Noah pointed to a particular agency that could be a way for us to follow the tea leaves.

Arthur Smith said they are trying to get Roman Wilson to not leave his feet. Alex Highsmith was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Arturs Silovs will start against the Capitals. Should the Pirates sign JT Realmuto? Joe and Austin think he could be a Russell Martin type.
Pirates insider Jason Mackey from the PG joined the show. Jason is not confident the Pirates will hand out a multi-year free agent deal, which they haven't done in nearly a decade. He expects the Pirates moves to be in trade form, like a Mitch Keller deal or something else with their young pitchers. Jason said the Pirates still probably have some shame in the Tyler Glasnow trade, even though it was under the last regime. Jason doesn't expect Tommy Pham or Isaiah Kiner-Falefa will be in Pittsburgh next season. Jason wouldn't be surprised if the Pirates ‘just run it back with a lot of what they had this past year.'
Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. The guys wanted Matt's reaction to the pitching matchup tonight in Milwaukee, which features 2 former Pirates – Jameson Taillon and Quinn Priester. Matt said you can compare those guys to other former Buccos that have found greener pastures elsewhere on the mound. The guys asked Matt about different philosophies in small markets that help those franchises make the playoffs. Matt doesn't see why the Pirates would part with Andrew McCutchen even though he's not the same player he once was.
10 years (and a day) since the Pirates were last in a playoff game – the 2015 Wild Card loss to the Cubs. Those teams from the three year stretch between 2013 and 2015 are remembered fondly – as they should be by some fans of a younger age. Should we subscribe more to the Paul Skenes mindset though? He wants to bring more than just a Wild Card win and a Divisional Series loss in 5 games to this city. The guys mentioned the double standard we have with the Steelers, who lose in the Wild Card round almost annually. There is no blaming of the fans because we should remember those teams well, but not THIS well, due to the ineptitude of the front office since then. Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. Mike talked about the Joe Flacco trade, sending the QB from Cleveland to Cincinnati and in line to start this weekend. Mike was surprised the Bengals didn't call the Giants about either of their veteran backups when things were going south with Jake Browning. Can Flacco succeed in Cincy with the talent they have at receiver? Mike said the Browns getting something back for Flacco was the reason they made the move. The Ravens also made a trade yesterday, moving one of their few healthy defenders to the Chargers. Mike is a bit surprised that Baltimore is still the favorite in the AFC North. Mike speculated that Lamar Jackson could miss more time than we originally thought.
-Donny and Mullsy keep the baseball talk going with the Tigers-Guardians game getting underway. The two talk about Cleveland being consistently good. And Pittsburgh being consistently bad. It's been that way for a long time. It's pretty depressing. -Bob Pompeani jumped on the show. He detailed his time in Ireland. And gave his thoughts on the state of the Steelers at 3-1. -PM Team Power Rankings. Top 5 scary movies with it being spooky season.

Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. Greg reflected on the season from Paul Skenes as he enters his final home start of the season. Greg said it's already hard to tell if there is another pitcher in Pirates history more dominant than Skenes. Greg said the division crown is still a goal, but it only takes the team being a little better than average to be in a playoff spot. Greg said it takes a legitimate starting SS and/or 3B to feel serious about next season. Greg talked about the decision by Don Kelly to sit Oneil Cruz and how frustrating the second half of the season has been for Cruz. The guys asked Greg about the idea of Cruz changing his position yet again in the offseason. Poni had Greg answer questions all around the diamond for the 2026 Buccos. Black & Gold Auction House – Round 6. Donny Football Debrief – The Steelers have a new WR – Isaiah Hodgins. And baby, did this thing go off the rails…
