Guy Junker says all his attention for tonight's preseason game will be focused on Drew Allar and Will Howard. Plus he laments the recent Buccos demise.
The Sports Porch is LIVE tonight, and Hockey Jesus has handed down the agenda:
Bob is getting honored tomorrow at Valley Brook. And he's going to golf. Limits is looking good at his wiffleball tournament. Callers into Zangrilli were very confused. Callers are downtrodden about the Buccos and the next CBA.
Pomp and Joe are live from Pitt football camp. Joe reminisces about his old days when he was regularly at the field. Joe was nearly killed by a bug before the show started. The Pirates collapse is the biggest story now. The starting pitching has been bad. Can we believe in Valdez next year? It feels like goodbye Pirates and hello Steelers. The Pirates have injury excuses but that might not be enough to save Cherington. 10:45 Bob is getting honored tomorrow at Valley Brook. And he's going to golf. PG columnist Noah Hiles joined the show. Noah has no idea what will happen at the end of this season if the Pirates yet again finish in last place. Noah suggested changes should be coming if we listen to what the front office said going into 2026. Noah thinks drafting and development has been a little bit better in the last few years, but it shouldn't be enough to save Ben Cherington his job. How much of the blame with pitching goes on Bill Murphy versus the players themselves? How much blame does Paul Skenes deserve for how this season has gone? Noah told us that Bob Nutting thinks ‘incredibly highly' of Don Kelly, but didn't have a real reason why.
MLB dot com is making excuses for the Pirates as their season dies on the vine. They have played 17 games in 17 days before today's day off. Folks are saying they are tired and it's too much baseball. It's baseball… the guys aren't going for that excuse. 93.7 The Fan MLB analyst Matt Clement joined the show. Can the Pirates go on a run like the Red Sox to get back into the playoff race? Matt said they have to start by just getting back to .500 first. What has happened since the All Star break? Matt stood up for Bill Murphy to a degree, but acknowledged the issues that have popped up with him in charge this season. How much of this season falls on Paul Skenes? PM Team Guess Who?
It's always a treat to make the yearly trip to PNC Park and Pat McCarthy made sure to sit down with Pirates Broadcaster Joe Block to discuss the breathtaking views along with his thoughts and expectations at the Buccos make their stretch run.
It was huge for perception sake that the Pirates won last night. It took too long, but Cherington got his man. Most of the other competitors did more. Joe will grade the Buccos from here on out with a clean slate. The return of Cruz should be massive. There's still concerns about the rotation. Skenes is still the key to the rest of the season. Cherington gets a B.

Cherington gets a B. We listen to the drive-thru call with Dan Zan and then we hear from that caller. There's still some criticism that Cherington didn't have more money with which to work. Don Kelly had a good night last night. The fans went from ready to throw in the towel after Sunday to excitement after last night.

Nick Farabaugh is live from camp to discuss IMAX and if he will start this season, Asante Samuel Jr, how the QB reps have been split, Drew Allar's ups and downs, who is in the lead for backup QB, a positive development with Kaleb Johnson, Roman Wilson vs Bernard, his perspective on the fans fight over an autograph. Dan Zangrilli was at his best last night. We hear his greatest hits from 2026. John Perotto joins to give his impression of the Pirates trade deadline, what's going on with Paul Skenes, how he'd deploy the bullpen, how this trade deadline felt different than past years, and if the Pirates will make the playoffs. Callers weigh in and give their Pirates' deadline grades. Fort McKenry jumps on to discuss the bullpen additions, Bubba Chandler, Skenes' velocity and changing his arsenal, how catchers acclimate to new pitchers, what strategy he'd use in extra innings, is Jared Jones will start going deeper, if the PIrates should've done more by adding a SP or a bat. Joe's mailbag - the Steelers cap outlook, Joe's dream job. Austin finally calls in at the last second and talks about trying to meet Drew Allar.
Did we get our first look at the new Buccos bullpen last night? Well, not totally, but we saw a glimpse of how they could work some of the guys in the late innings. In the 4-3 win over Milwaukee, the Pirates were able to use Gregory Soto in the 6th followed by Camilo Doval and Mason Montgomery. What will it look like once the reinforcements show up? Some of the writers around the league didn't care for the Pirates deadline haul. Why? The guys couldn't really find a good reason to say they didn't.

Some of the writers around the league didn't care for the Pirates deadline haul. Why? The guys couldn't really find a good reason to say they didn't. A funny postgame answer from Mason Montgomery. Where are the Pirates ranked in baseball's power rankings? A funny call from Dan's postgame last night. Marlins TV pre-post game host Craig Mish joined the show. Craig was able to give the skinny on Lake Bachar, who the Pirates acquired from Miami yesterday for a few lower-tier prospects. Craig said Lake can be ‘a little out there' like other relievers in baseball. Craig thinks the Marlins got the most out of Bachar, which explains the trade even with Miami in the playoff race. Craig told the guys what to expect from Bachar when he's on the hill. Craig doesn't foresee Bachar as the Pirates future closer, but thinks the 6th or 7th inning could be his home. What's the future like for Lake in Pittsburgh?
Not only did the Pirates land Luke Weaver today, but the Mets are also making it a lot easier financially for the Buccos. Weaver will basically get the league-minimum from the Pirates the rest of this year and the Mets will pay roughly half of Weaver's salary for 2027. How did the Mets make this so easy? Will the Pirates make another move in the next hour-plus? It feels like the Cubs have added 10 players today. Henry Davis was roasted by a baseball insider. Evan Roberts from WFAN in New York City joined the show. Evan said Luke Weaver is a great late-inning option and can absolutely pitch the 9th for the Pirates. Evan doesn't believe the pressure gets to Weaver. Evan said Weaver is ‘kind of weird, but in a good way' and has a good personality. Evan said Weaver does interviews like a guy cutting an old-school wrestling promo. What kind of mix does Weaver work with? Former Pirates closer Matt Capps joined the show. Matt thinks the move for Luke Weaver is ‘incredible' and cites that the Pirates basically moved Ke'Bryan Hayes to get Weaver one year later. Matt said there is an aura about the 9th inning and how difficult it can be to close out games. The guys asked Matt how this shifts the Pirates bullpen late in the game. How many sausages will Matt put down during the 4-game set in Milwaukee? Hodgepodge of Nothingness.

Pirates pre-post game host Dan Zangrilli joined the show. Dan described the scene of Esmerlyn Valdez letting us know he would be good to go, as early as tonight. Spencer Horwitz reportedly has a concussion even though we saw him paling around in the dugout last night. Dan doesn't think Horwitz will have too much more time added to his IL stint. Why was Horwitz playing A ball in his rehab to begin with? Dan thinks Mason Montgomery took a step forward as the team's future closer in the last 2 games. What affords Marcell Ozuna back-to-back starts? Tonight is his first start against a righty in 3 weeks. What will the trade deadline look like for the Buccos?

Oneil Cruz is still working his way back from injury and as we get closer to the trade deadline, there are more people suggesting that Cruz should be on the table. Injured players that are on the IL are eligible to be traded – something that changed a few years ago. How much of a downgrade is it to roll with Jake Mangum full-time in CF? PM Team Guess Who? Former Pirates closer Matt Capps joined the show. Matt, a former closer, loves the idea of Mason Miller at the trade deadline because of the versatility it would allow the Pirates to have in their bullpen. He thinks a move like that makes the Buccos a top 2-3 team in the NL. Matt talked about the confidence issue that can be had by guys in the bullpen and why things may not be working for Dennis Santana right now. What else can the Pirates do to fix up their ‘pen before we hit the last stretch of the season?
The Pirates took 2 of 3 over the weekend in Cleveland. Saturday night left a sour taste after the Pirates blew another game, but the response on Sunday may have fixed all of that for people. The Buccos are tied for a playoff spot entering play today. What were the highlights from this series? Poni bragged about his harness race victory on Saturday. Yesterday will be remembered as the Billy Cook game. Which team from the National League is the biggest threat to the Pirates in the wild card race? Pirates reporter Colin Beazley from the PG joined the show. Colin labeled Esmerlyn Valdez as ‘untouchable' ahead of the trade deadline and said he wouldn't part with really anyone on the Major League roster right now. Colin mentioned that a Mason Miller trade would likely include a big-money player from the Padres that they are looking to move in order to free up money. How can the Pirates add to the roster without adding much in terms of payroll? Colin's guess is that Luke Weaver will be the Pirates main target at the trade deadline. Colin thinks the next 2 weeks could be the final days of Dennis Santana in a Pirates uniform.

Paul Skenes has optimism that many current Pirates will be future All-Stars. What should the Pirates do with their pitchers in the second half of the season? The guys wonder if another starter is needed by the Buccos. Could Robbie Ray be a trade candidate for Pittsburgh?
The Pirates have a very little chance to win the NL Central because the Brewers have created such a gap. But what about a wild card spot? Fan Graphs gives them the best chance of any team outside looking in to make the postseason. The site gives the Pirates just under a 42% chance to make it to October. Are they better than the Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Marlins? Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the PG joined the show. Jon Gruden continues to praise the work of Will Howard as we have yet to see him in a pro game. Ray thinks it's more of the same and added what we have heard so many times from Mike McCarthy so far. Per usual, Ray said the offense in the preseason will be vanilla, so it could come down to what we see in practice. Ray reacted to the idea that 6 Steelers, including Keeanu Benton, would fetch a 1st round pick in return if traded. Ray expects a bounce back year from TJ Watt and thinks he will have a 12-sack season. When will the Joey Porter Jr. contract buzz start to pick up again and when will that deal get done? How long will it take for Max Iheanachor to become the starter at right tackle? Poni took us on a ride through some football preview books.
The MLB All Star Game is tonight and the Pirates have just 2 representatives, neither of which swing the bat. Braxton Ashcraft was added as a replacement and Paul Skenes got in on his merit. Should we really care about the team reps in 2026 given how much is impacted by fan voting? The Pirates have the top offense in baseball, but nobody on the offense will be there. When did the All Star Game lose some of the pomp & circumstance?
Hour 2: Who deserves more blame for the Pirates' problems. Don Kelly or Ben Cherington? Crowley thinks the Pirates could make a trade today. And Jennifer Coolidge said she had sex with 200 men after her role in American Pie.
Steelers correspondent Mark Kaboly from The Pat McAfee Show joined the show. Mark now just tweets “Buccos” any time something goes wrong for the Pirates. Poni thinks that this is to get under the skin of Pirate fans. Mark says that he has never been reprimanded by the Tomlin regime for anything journalism related, all though it happened a couple of times with the Cowher regime. More w/ Mark – Harry Callas is on a trip to Ireland right now, and he is currently bowling. Mark was shocked to see this, as bowling is something that you can do in Pittsburgh. Mark thinks that he was a better little league baseball player than JJ Wetherholt, citing that Wetherholt played in an era with bigger barrel bats and such. More w/ Mark – Ray Fittipaldo said that the backup QB job is Will Howard's to lose. Mark vehemently disagrees with this, saying that it is Aaron Rodgers 1 and Mason Rudolph 2 unless Will Howard forces the Steelers hand.
