We went back into the archives to see how we actually reacted when Sam Darnold signed with Seattle, and it turns out we barely reacted at all. Instead of breaking down Darnold, we immediately pivoted to what it meant for everyone else. Now that Darnold is in the Super Bowl, we revisit that moment and ask what we missed. Plus, a surprising on-air moment involving Jerry Recco and an open Tampa Bay Buccaneers radio job. Why didn't Jerry bring it up directly, what the role really entails, and why this might be a bigger opportunity than it sounds. A mix of hindsight, media honesty, and a classic WFAN sidebar that turns into something much more interesting.

This week on Second Act Stories, we're featuring a series called "Rewriting the Playbook." This group of episodes features guests whose journeys share a common connection to sports, sometimes front and center, sometimes quietly shaping the path forward. In these conversations, the influence of competition, teamwork, and discipline shows up in different ways, informing career pivots and personal reinvention. Together, these stories explore how the lessons learned on the field can echo long after the final whistle, guiding second acts that are anything but predictable. Arrelious Benn was a star football player at Dunbar Senior High School (Washington, DC) and the University of Illinois. He entered the NFL draft after his junior year in college and was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His NFL career with Tampa Bay, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars spanned seven years, twice the league average. But it is also included two ACL tears, a fractured lumbar and a shattered collarbone. After his final season with the Jaguars, he and his family put down roots and decided to open Social House Coffee in the Avondale section of Jacksonville. Replacing a former gun store, his neighborhood shop is all about great coffee and building community. As Benn shares in the podcast, "Football consumed my life for so many years. But I know I only have one body. And I want to see my kids grow up and there are other things I want to do. It's a breath of fresh air to do something new and be creative." Benn is now working in what he calls "my first real job." He spends his days taking customers' orders, serving coffee/pastries and managing a staff of six. And he couldn't be happier. ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. We may read your review on a future episode! Subscribe to the Second Act stories Substack. Bobby Bones and Matt Cassel exchange some car stories before diving into the Broncos advancing without an injured Bo Nix. Matt explains how the team moves forward this week and has the opportunity to rally around Jarrett Stidham. Looking at the head coaching openings, who would be the ideal candidate for the Bills? Matt thinks it's a tough spot because of the immediate Super Bowl expectations. It's Conference Championship Playoff Weekend and the Patriots should feel confident against the Broncos. The Rams visit the Seahawks and Bobby explains why Matthew Stafford is the best QB left playing. Boston Globe Sr. NFL Writer Ben Volin will be in Denver to cover the Patriots. Ben notes the turnaround from New England after Mike Vrabel joined the team. How has Drake Maye established himself as the leader of this locker room? Ben was surprised by the Bills moving on from Sean McDermott because coaching wasn't their issue this season. What is the best candidate for Buffalo? Ben feels like the Seahawks have the advantage of rest against the Rams, but LA has been playing tough. Ben reveals his favorites for MVP this season, before Matt asks for Ben's favorite Tim Tebow story. With 4 QB's left, which one has the best 'story' if they won the Super Bowl? Sean McDermott fired! Can the timing be worse? John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski just signed with the Giants and Falcons. Oops? And while everyone is sad today for Josh Allen no one has shed a tear for CJ Stroud. Is it because he tried to big bro Caleb Williams? Maybe. Meanwhile, there's tough and then there's Bo Nix making a throw after his bone snapped. The hashtag #winitforbo has become a rallying cry for the Broncos. Speaking of cry, the Chicago fans had the highest of highs and then a quick fall back to earth. They're still sobbing a day later. We don't blame them either. Then our good friend and former NFL lineman Geoff Schwartz jumps in and gets deep into religion. Yes, religion. He says it's the key to prep yourself for the violence of a football game. Alleluia!
