The Pittsburgh Pirates are firmly in the National League Wild Card race, and their improved depth might be the biggest reason why. Jim and Ryan discuss how players like Billy Cook, Tyler Callihan, Endy Rodriguez, Jacob Gonzalez, Jake Mangum and Esmerlyn Valdez have stepped up throughout the season. Even with Oneil Cruz, Konnor Griffin, Spencer Horwitz and Brandon Lowe missing time, the Pirates continue to find different ways to win. They also discuss the Pirates' plans at the trade deadline, concerns about ownership limiting payroll, potential bullpen targets and the upcoming series against the New York Yankees. "I expect them to be aggressive" at the trade deadline. Ben Cherington said deals aren't getting done now. Jason doesn't think the Pirates have to shed payroll in order to add players. It's time to move on from Dennis Santana and he cannot pitch in later innings. Oneil Cruz's timeline has been pushed back. The Pirates need Endy Rodriguez back.
This injury report is brought to you by Shenderovich, Shenderovich and Fishman.
Oneil Cruz is still working his way back from injury and as we get closer to the trade deadline, there are more people suggesting that Cruz should be on the table. Injured players that are on the IL are eligible to be traded – something that changed a few years ago. How much of a downgrade is it to roll with Jake Mangum full-time in CF? PM Team Guess Who? Former Pirates closer Matt Capps joined the show. Matt, a former closer, loves the idea of Mason Miller at the trade deadline because of the versatility it would allow the Pirates to have in their bullpen. He thinks a move like that makes the Buccos a top 2-3 team in the NL. Matt talked about the confidence issue that can be had by guys in the bullpen and why things may not be working for Dennis Santana right now. What else can the Pirates do to fix up their ‘pen before we hit the last stretch of the season?
Bob Nightengale said recently that the Pirates won't add deadline help if they are adding to the payroll. This made big waves throughout Pittsburgh as many are hoping that the Pirates add bullpen arms. Poni thinks that Cherington, like other GMs throughout the league, is afraid to make a trade unless he knows he is fleecing the other guy. MLB writer Travis Sawchik joined the show. Travis says that he absolutely thinks the Pirates should be buyers at the deadline, and he thinks that bullpen help should be the first priority. He also says that there is no excuse for the Pirates not to help the bullpen, as bullpen arms are always on the move around deadline time. Travis says that the market will loosen up near the deadline because there will terms will be more sure that they cannot make the playoffs. He also thinks that it would cost a ridiculous package to acquire Mason miller, similar to the one that the A's got for him last year. Sawchik does not think that the idea of trading Oneil Cruz is a good one. Donny Football Debrief – Tom Brady made waves this weekend, as he was starting to form a feud with Logan Paul. It feels like we are setting up for Tom Brady vs Logan Paul at WrestleMania in Saudi Arabia.

The Pirates haven't played in four days, and Pittsburgh has apparently lost its mind. Jim and Tyler react to the ridiculous ideas of trading Oneil Cruz or Spencer Horwitz for bullpen help before discussing what Ben Cherington should actually do at the deadline. Could the Pirates make a massive offer for Mason Miller? Is Luke Weaver the best realistic target? They also discuss Brooks Raley, Adrian Morejon, the need for another starting pitcher and the Robert Hassell III acquisition. The Pirates are three games over .500 and firmly in the playoff race. Now it is time to find out whether the front office is ready to improve the roster for the second half. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Will the Pirates be buyers or sellers? We think they will be buyers. Donny thinks Mason Miller is unrealistic. Donny is not trading Seth Hernandez. Yahoo Sports thinks it would take a top 100 prospect to acquire Luke Weaver, plus two relievers who could backfill Weaver next season. Can Paul Skenes return to his elite status? Can the offense keep this up? What will Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz look like they they're back? What happens with the young pitchers?
Jeff had a great call yesterday from someone suggesting transitioning Oneil Cruz from an outfielder to a pitcher. The guys are very happy that the All-Star Break is over and the nightmare of no sports will end. If the Pirates win 86 games and miss the playoffs would fans be satisfied? Dorin says he wouldn't be. He says that would irritate Pirates fans because they didn't address the issues early enough and put themselves in completely avoidable situations. I say I would be satisfied. Crowley agrees with Dorin. I am wrong. Not making the playoffs is the be-all and end-all.
With the Steelers playing on Black Friday this year, the amount of leftover food will be a sight to see. Crowley continues to try and fix sports. ESPN sent out a list of potential trade targets for all teams. ESPN says that the Pirates need to add a couple of arms(duh), to become more of a contender. Crowley does not see the Marlins as a good team just a hot team. Crowley has some questions about what it will take for the Pirates to make the playoffs.
Will the Pirates add another arm to the bullpen? Dorin says they will, whether it is the right arm or not. Crowley and Dorin are not fans of the Brandon Eisert part of the trade. Will Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz continue their success when they return from the injured list?
Greg Brown joins the show! Will the Pirates play tonight? The smoke in the air in Cleveland is casting doubt over whether tonight's game will be played. Do the Pirates need another starter? Greg says every team could use another arm and the Pirates would be one of those teams open to it. He says the Keller mystery is still one that needs to be solved.

Crowley agrees with Dorin. I am wrong. Not making the playoffs is the be-all and end-all. We're onto the second half of the Pirates season. If the Pirates don't make the playoffs but have a better record, Ben Cherington will definitely say "We made strides," which will anger Crowley. Crowley is also not up to date on pop culture and a recent New York Post headline has him very confused. Crowley has a bone to pick with the NHL and MLB. Both sports released their schedules on the same day. What were they thinking? Crowley gets more info on the Jelly Roll and his divorce. I give them some scouting reports on Mets pitchers available after last night's report that said the Mets firesale is upon us. Huscar Brazoban, Luke Weaver, and Clay Holmes should be the targets for the Pirates. We are a couple of weeks away from the trade deadline. I asked Dorin what is the best leftover food. I think it is Chinese food, Dorin says it is Japanese, and Crowley says anything rice based is good leftover food. Mall food court Chinese food is a dying art
Endy Rodriguez and Jake Mangum have made impacts on the team, but are not dependable starting players. Rodriguez has a chance to. Fans continue to tell us they would trade Oneil Cruz for Mason Miller and Tomcat wants Michael King. Austin doesn't want to trade from the Major League roster.
Hour 2 with Jeff Hathhorn: MLB insider John Perrotto joined the show. The Guardians pitch well, especially in their bullpen. Their offense doesn't have much power. Mitch Keller has a 5.13 ERA in his career in the second half. John suggests the Pirates put Mitch Keller in the bullpen to try to get right and find what he needs to get on track. Oneil Cruz was hustling better and more engaged when he was healthy. John thinks Cruz could take off and doesn't want to trade him. How much blame should Bill Murphy get for the Pirates' poor pitching?

Pirates insider Jason Mackey joined the show. Jason does not think the Pirates would part with Seth Hernandez in a deal even if it involved Mason Miller. He doesn't think the Padres will move Miller. Which prospects would be on the table if the Pirates are buying at the deadline? Jason does not see a trade involving Oneil Cruz happening. Jason said he would trade Cruz for Miller straight up, but made it clear that it won't happen. Jason likes the idea of trading for multiple relievers instead of a big dog like Miller, which also wouldn't require the movement of their own stars. Jason thinks pretty much every prospect outside of Hernandez should be on the table. What would a potential extension for Esmerlyn Valdez look like? We reacted to a trade that was made during the call, which was the Pirates acquiring a former 1st round pick. Jason doesn't think the Pirates trade for a starting pitcher. A few other quick questions regarding the trade deadline.
Why is the idea of trading Oneil Cruz gaining steam? Is it fan driven or is it Fan driven? Is it all about one particular trade idea that could net them Mason Miller? People are loving Jake Mangum and think he can easily fill the void full-time. We don't get it. The Yankees reportedly ‘love' the idea of trading for Mason Miller. Isn't it fair to say every team would want him? Do the Pirates only need a guy that can get 3 outs? Pirates insider Jason Mackey joined the show. The Brewers are trading for Lance McCullers. Should the Pirates trade for Josh Hader? He is signed through 2028. Steve Yzerman is stepping down as Red Wings GM. What's your Pirates lineup with Oneil Cruz, Spencer Horwitz, and Endy Rodriguez back? Nick on the Parkway wants to trade Paul Skenes. We do not want to trade Skenes. We don't think the Pirates should trade some of their best players to acquire bullpen pieces, but to trade prospects. The Pirates selected Derek Curiel 5th overall out of LSU.
Hour 1 with Donny Football: The Pirates swept the Brewers and are three games over at the All-Star Break. The best offense in baseball has no All-Star reps in the National League. The Pirates are the second team in baseball history to enter the All-Star Break with the worst scoring offense one year and have the best scoring offense the next. The Pirates selected LSU's putfielder Derek Curiel 5th overall.
7-13 Fan Morning Show 7am Hour: Ben Cherington made a trade over the weekend. Was there a better trade on the table? According to some reports, better relievers were available for what the Pirates gave up—the 34th overall pick. The White Sox also selected Jim Thome's son with the pick. This could potentially be an all-time Pirates trade. There was a potential deal with the Mets for Brooks Raley, a very good left handed reliever. The Pirates took the deal for Brandon Eisert instead. There was a Poni prediction this weekend that the Pirates would sweep the Brewers. He got one right! Was Connor McGregor hurt before his fight against Max Holloway over the weekend? How mad would you be if you bought a ticket to that fight? Also, a lot of people bought tickets to see Paul Skenes vs Joe Misiorowski but did not see the Miz because he was fatigued. Would you entertain trading Oneil Cruz this deadline? Crowley says that trading him is a non-starter and when Cruz, Spencer Horwitz, and Konnor Griffin come back it could be the best lineup in baseball. Crowley is chewing gum as he tries to quit nicotine. We wish him luck as he quits nicotine. How do the guys feel about Paul Skenes? They say they feel a little better now that his last two starts were more like Skenes. Seth Hernandez had some interesting quotes while playing in the futures game. Could we maybe see Hernandez in the bullpen in September? Producer Charlie got a phone call from someone during the rain delay Friday night from Allegheny County Jail. He asked for the name again, but no one responded. What if The Fan was their one phone call to get bailed out? Did Producer Charlie condemn someone for a lifetime in prison? The Pirates pulling Jared Jones could have angered the caller so much they wanted to vent from prison.
Hour 1: Are fans back on the Pirates bandwagon after this weekend's sweep of the Brewers? Aaron Rodgers took a Yellowstone retreat this weekend. And who really built the pyramids? Hour 2: Could the Pirates call Seth Hernandez up before the end of this season? Could Esmerlyn Valdez get a contract extension already? And the guys play another round of Bucco Auction House. Hour 3: Who is the greatest NFL coach of all time? Ron Cook followed Dom on Twitter this weekend. And is BYU about to join the Big Ten? Hour 4: Could the guys complete the 9-9-9 challenge at a baseball game? Dan Zangrilli joins the show to break down the latest news with the Pirates. The guys play another round of PM Team Guess Who?. And how famous is Carrie Underwood right now?
The Pittsburgh Pirates closed out the weekend with a 14-5 win to complete a three-game sweep of the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. DiNardo and Doug break down Paul Skenes' encouraging start, a ridiculous 10-run fourth inning and huge production from Henry Davis, Jared Triolo and Marcell Ozuna. The Pirates now head into the All-Star break three games over .500 with an offense that continues to produce despite injuries to Konnor Griffin, Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz. Ryan O'Hearn delivered one of the best single-game performances in Pittsburgh Pirates history, driving in a franchise-record 10 runs with three home runs in a massive win over the Braves. Alex Stumpf breaks down why O'Hearn's historic night mattered even more after the Pirates learned Konnor Griffin is headed to the injured list with a left ring finger injury. With Griffin out, Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz still working back, and the Pirates trying to survive a brutal stretch before the All-Star break, this was exactly the kind of win they needed. Brandon Lowe was not named to the National League All-Star team, but his season with the Pittsburgh Pirates is becoming impossible to ignore. On today's OffBeat, Alex Stumpf breaks down Lowe's 21 home runs, his chase of Neil Walker's Pirates second base home run record, and why this could go down as one of the greatest seasons ever by a Pirates second baseman. Alex also looks at Bryan Reynolds' All-Star case, the Pirates' big series win over the Nationals, the wild card race, Oneil Cruz's absence, Spencer Horowitz's impact, and why Pittsburgh's path to October still feels real if the bullpen gets help. The Pirates survived Washington, but now the real test begins. On this episode of Bucco Brew, we look ahead at a brutal stretch against the Braves, Brewers, Guardians, Yankees, Cubs, and Diamondbacks while the Pirates are likely still without Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz for at least part of it. What does surviving the next three weeks actually look like? Is .500 baseball enough? We also dive into the weird All-Star conversation. Paul Skenes was named the Pirates' lone All-Star, but Brandon Lowe, Bryan Reynolds, and Braxton Ashcraft all have strong cases. How does a team with one of the best offenses in baseball end up with zero offensive All-Stars? Plus, Endy Rodriguez and Henry Davis have quietly turned the catching situation into a strength. Is this less of a controversy now and more of a functional setup? @eddiep_photos @timelessimagery.mtl Download our app! : https://apps.apple.com/us/app/north-shore-nine/id6771171000 : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.northshorenine.app Use Promo Code NS930 for 30% off your first order at https://www.defer.coffee Use Promo Code NORTHSHORENINE for $20 off your first order at https://www.seatgeek.com LIKE and SUBSCRIBE with NOTIFICATIONS ON if you enjoyed the show! ►Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/NorthShoreNine ►Website: https://www.northshorenine.com ►Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/northshorenine ►TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@northshorenine ►Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/northshorenine ►Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/northshorenine ►Discord: https://discord.gg/3HVYPg544m #pittsburghpirates Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
