If the Steelers decide to roll with Mason Rudolph instead of Will Howard, could they get anything for Howard in a trade? Why is ESPN oddly optimistic about the Pirates? The Pirates will get Oneil Cruz and Konnor Griffin back before the end of the season, and ESPN thinks it could ‘save' their season. John criticized how Skenes has looked in his last 3 starts with the Pirates needing their ace to answer the call. John joked as a man of heavy stature that Skenes does look like he's put on some weight between seasons and it may be affecting his performance. The guys asked John how the Pirates may twirl things this offseason if they finish in last place once again? Oneil Cruz is eligible to return from the 60-day injured list, but the Pittsburgh Pirates still do not have a firm timeline for his comeback. Alex Stumpf explains why the continued uncertainty surrounding Cruz's hand injury is becoming increasingly concerning. Even when Cruz begins a rehab assignment, questions will remain about his timing, power and ability to immediately resemble the hitter who carried Pittsburgh's offense earlier this season. The Pirates also chose not to add another hitter at the trade deadline, partly because they expected Cruz and Ryan O'Hearn to eventually return. With Bryan Reynolds, Jake Mangum and Esmerlyn Valdez struggling lately, that decision is beginning to look much riskier. Presented by FanDuel. We first welcomed DiNardo back on Episode 44 in December 2024, and with Pittsburgh sitting right in the middle of the National League Wild Card race as the trade deadline approaches, there was no better time to catch up. For nearly a decade, Anthony has helped grow North Shore Nine from a fan blog into one of the premier destinations for Pirates coverage, featuring podcasts, postgame shows, prospect analysis, videos and in-depth reporting. We begin by looking back on North Shore Nine's recent 10-year anniversary before turning our attention to one of baseball's biggest surprise teams. We discuss how the Pirates have transformed last year's lowest-scoring offense into one of the best in baseball, leading the majors in hits while ranking among the National League leaders in runs scored, RBI, batting average and home runs. We also examine whether seven blown late leads are the only thing standing between Pittsburgh and a playoff spot, or if they expose larger roster issues that still need to be addressed. From there, we dive into the biggest storylines surrounding the club, including Ben Cherington's deadline strategy, reports surrounding payroll, the possibility of listening to offers for Oneil Cruz, and why the bullpen remains the organization's biggest priority as the stretch run begins. Bubba Chandler put together the best start of his career last night, but the Pirates were shutout by the Yankees in the second game of their doubleheader. The offense scoring 0 is a story, but not the big one. With Chandler cruising into the 7th inning, Don Kelly pulled him from Brandon Eisert. Predictably, the Yankees immediately scored twice to take a 2-0 lead (where the score would stay). Was it preplanned? Why can't the Pirates push aside the script if someone gives them reason to? The guys brought up times this year when a pitcher is pulled well ahead of when the team would like, so why not have the same energy now? The lack of feel has grown in the wrong direction. A tough call for the final out last night. The guys wanted to hear more heat from Don Kelly on the umpires, even in a game that was a shutout loss. Pirates insider Jason Mackey joined the show. Did the front office push for Don Kelly to pull Bubba Chandler last night? The guys wanted to know the predetermined nature of decisions like the one made last night. Should we be concerned about Brandon Lowe and Ryan O'Hearn, who are both in the midst of a rough drought? Jason projects Spencer Horwitz to return ‘this weekend' and Oneil Cruz possibly in the next 2 weeks. Jason said the report of the Pirates not spending extra cash at the deadline is ‘baloney.' Jason doesn't think there will be a half measure taken this time around.

Bob Nightengale says the Pirates could be willing to listen on Oneil Cruz as they search for bullpen and rotation help. Alex Stumpf explains why trading Cruz now would solve nothing, why his ceiling still matters, and why Pittsburgh should use prospect capital to acquire multiple relievers instead. Before landing on the injured list, Cruz had 14 home runs, 44 RBI, 21 stolen bases and a 123 wRC+ through 64 games. The offense may have survived without him, but that does not mean the Pirates would be better without him. PG columnist Noah Hiles joined the show. Noah said the Pirates are probably taking calls on Oneil Cruz just like they took calls on him last year. Noah thinks any move made would be to acquire pitching help. Noah thinks the Pirates have actually accomplished some of the goals set from last season. Noah believes the team would look to move prospects before they look into moving Major League players. Is a Mason Miller trade as simple as it sounds? Noah, like Colin Beazley yesterday, said a Miller trade would likely require a salary dump from the Padres too – making it very difficult for the Pirates to do. Noah said we will find out in 2 weeks if the front office really believes in this team. Will a move be made before the deadline? The guys asked Noah to put a percentage on Pirates/prospects being traded by the deadline in 2 weeks. Noah labeled Wyatt Sanford as the ‘perfect trade chip' in their system. Bob Nightengale said recently that the Pirates won't add deadline help if they are adding to the payroll. This made big waves throughout Pittsburgh as many are hoping that the Pirates add bullpen arms. Poni thinks that Cherington, like other GMs throughout the league, is afraid to make a trade unless he knows he is fleecing the other guy. MLB writer Travis Sawchik joined the show. Travis says that he absolutely thinks the Pirates should be buyers at the deadline, and he thinks that bullpen help should be the first priority. He also says that there is no excuse for the Pirates not to help the bullpen, as bullpen arms are always on the move around deadline time. Travis says that the market will loosen up near the deadline because there will terms will be more sure that they cannot make the playoffs. He also thinks that it would cost a ridiculous package to acquire Mason miller, similar to the one that the A's got for him last year. Sawchik does not think that the idea of trading Oneil Cruz is a good one. Donny Football Debrief – Tom Brady made waves this weekend, as he was starting to form a feud with Logan Paul.
