Recent events have brought mass surveillance back into the spotlight. And though whistleblowers have sacrificed dearly to broaden public awareness the struggle for freedom endures as powerful interests leverage technology and clever propaganda on behalf of enhancing control. Whether it’s Communist Party Leaders in China or bureaucrats from the United States Department of Justice. They all present arguments in support of increasing their authority to collect data. This growing appetite for information has created an entire industry which subverts individual privacy for profit. Even worse, those who seek to escape the panopticon often fall prey to quick fixes that ultimately betray them. Caveat emptor: there are no simple answers, only hard questions as the existing world order crumbles and a new one emerges. Bill Blunden is a security analyst whose current areas of inquiry touch on clandestine operations, technology, and power. He’s best known for writing the software industry’s most detailed manual on anti-forensics, the "Rootkit Arsenal." Over the past two decades Bill has toiled in R&D departments, developed tools for network security appliances, and taken various detours through academia. Bill has written a number of other books including "Behold a Pale Farce," "Software Exorcism," "Cube Farm," and "Offshoring IT: The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly." In the domain of the social sciences, he has co-authored articles related to 9/11 that have appeared in academic publications like Peace Psychology and Aggressive Behavior. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/iantrottier/support

The cubicle. The three-walled cliche, surface to which so many Hang In There kitty cat posters are affixed, was invented in Ann Arbor. That’s right - the yoke around the neck of white collar workers everywhere was conceived and birthed in Ann Arbor. On State Street, no less. Here's the story of its invention and proliferation and how it came to be in Ann Arbor. Music by Stepdad. In this belated Talk-Like-A-Pirate-Day tribute show, Mark and Jeff (AKA Capt Stinky Tom and Keelhaul Col) do a session report on a game we briefly discussed in show 15: Cheapass Games' Cube Farm! We briefly expand on some rules that we didn't take the time to cover in show 15, and then go over our impressions and general strategies. This is a quick, easy game with one or two layers of strategy that you don't necessarily see on the first pass. It's finally here! Our long awaited Podcast of Hate! In this show, Mark and Jeff field listener comments about the things they hate, dislike, or otherwise do not savor in the gaming world. Before we dive into the cauldron of embitterment, our Dusty Old Box segment features an unusual --a VERY unusual game that is "kinda-sorta" like some other games but is really unique in many ways. In actuality, today's Dusty Old Box is not a box, but...a Dusty Old Thing. Once Mark and Jeff dive into the hate, they cover discussion topics ranging from poor sportsmanship to game company publishing practices, to game group dynamics. Before signing off, Jeff does a quick segment to describe the game Cube Fame, published by Cheapass Games. This is a very high-level description of the game, and gives us something to "Point-Five" next time, and so we'll dig into Cube Farm a bit more deeply the next time we plug-in our headset mics! Lastly, Mark surprises everyone --including Jeff-- by spontaneously introducing a new show segment: Mark's Personal Game Trivia, which is certain to inspire many a wrinkled brow. If you have any comments that you would like to share, please feel free to write in via email or blog entry.
