Journalist Chris Hayes says “attention capitalism” demands we pay heed to everything at once, from social media doomscrolling to the relentless pace of the 24-hour news cycle. The air raid siren in Prague that sounds the first Wednesday of every month, and it is a practice alert as part of the Czech Republic's emergency preparedness system. The siren goes off at 12:00 PM and it's not meant to signal an actual threat, but rather to test the nation's readiness in case of a real emergency. It serves as a regular reminder of the country's civil defense system, helping citizens stay aware of the procedures they should follow in the event of an emergency such as a natural disaster, military conflict, or other national crises. The air raid siren system in the Czech Republic has its roots in the Cold War era, when the country, like many others in Europe, prepared for the possibility of airstrikes or other wartime threats. Though the geopolitical climate has changed significantly since then, the sirens remain a fixture of emergency preparedness. It's important to note that the siren is a test, and there is no cause for alarm when it sounds that Wednesday. However, the government encourages people to pay attention, just in case it becomes necessary to respond to an actual warning in the future. Over time, this practice has become part of the cultural landscape, a reminder of both the country's history and its ongoing efforts to stay prepared for emergencies. In the digital age, attention is a resource — but if we can have a little slice of yours, we've got a great conversation about that very subject for you to listen to. This week, Mike is joined by journalist Chris Hayes to discuss his new book, The Siren's Call: How Attention Became the World's Most Endangered Resource, and examine just what's going on in the attention economy and where it might head in the future. I want to thank Jessica for joining me for this interview! She is such a sweet and talented actress, and I am very glad I got speak to her about her role in this movie. I hope that I get to see her come back if a sequel is made. We spoke about how she landed the role as ‘Siren Sara', what it was like on set, what it was like to wear the costume, and to work with Nicholas Cage. And we may have deviated a bit talking about true crime and serial killers. My bad… Influences on the movie – I can definitely sense a mash up of Ash vs. Evil Dead and Five Nights at Freddy's unless someone else can come up with a better description. Hopefully, there will be a sequel to this movie. I mean, they left plenty of room for one and it ended on a cliffhanger.

Hi, WITHpod listeners! It's an exciting day and we have a special treat for you. Today, we're sharing the first chapter of Chris' new book, “The Sirens' Call: How Attention How Attention Became the World's Most Endangered Resource.' From the book description:We all feel it—the distraction, the loss of focus, the addictive focus on the wrong things for too long. We bump into the zombies on their phones in the street, and sometimes they're us. We stare in pity at the four people at the table in the restaurant, all on their phones, and then we feel the buzz in our pocket. Something has changed utterly: for most of human history, the boundary between public and private has been clear, at least in theory. Now, as Chris Hayes writes, “With the help of a few tech firms, we basically tore it down in about a decade.” Hayes argues that we are in the midst of an epoch-defining transition whose only parallel is what happened to labor in the nineteenth century: attention has become a commodified resource extracted from us, and from which we are increasingly alienated. The Sirens' Call is the big-picture vision we urgently need to offer clarity and guidance.Audio excerpted courtesy of Penguin Random House Audio from The Sirens' Call by Chris Hayes, read by Chris Hayes. © 2025 Christopher Hayes, ℗ 2025 Penguin Random House, LLC. The directives putting a pause on federal grants and the firing of career DOJ prosecutors is about trying to make the entirety of the federal government the tool of the man occupying the presidency. And it's all illegal and unconstitutional. Meanwhile, Trump is exactly the kind of broken sociopath who can dominate the war for attention—the defining resource of our time. Plus, a rundown on DeepSeek, the new Chinese AI model, and why Bitcoin fans aren't more angry about the worthless, scammy Trump and Melania coins. Chris Hayes joins Katie for a thought-provoking conversation about the most valuable commodity there is: attention. As the host of MSNBC’s All In, Hayes knows how to grab it—and he's seen who else is competing for it. In his new book The Siren’s Call, he argues that attention has become the ultimate currency in a world where our brains are being rewired by the little sirens in our pockets—our smartphones. He covers it all with Katie – from how exactly we got here to the way the attention economy has radically reshaped our politics, our relationships, and the way we understand the world around us. But there’s also good news--by understanding who’s vying for our attention and how they’re doing it, we can take back control and decide where to focus our energy, rather than having it… well, captured.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
