Nice story about a candy shop owner in Calgary that's going viral because the owner of the shop did the right thing & is getting praised for being kind. The Stanley Cup recently made a special visit in Florida, and did you see the video of the world's angriest cat getting a bath? She is the author of Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2020), National Geographic's Pirates: Shipwrecks, Conquests, and their Lasting Legacy (Washington, D.C.: National Geographic, 2021), Pirates and Privateers from Long Island Sound to Delaware Bay (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2022), and The Daring Exploits of Black Sam Bellamy: From Cape Cod to the Caribbean (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2023).Rebecca Simon is a historian of early modern piracy, Colonial America, the Atlantic World, and maritime history. She earned her PhD from King's College London in 2017. My dissertation, entitled: “The Crimes of Piracy and its Punishment: The Performance of Maritime Supremacy in the British Atlantic World, 1670 – 1830,” examines British maritime and legal supremacy in its early American colonies in regards to maritime piracy. She uses the public executions of pirates in London and the Americas as my narrative to see how the colonists reacted to increased legal restrictions by British authorities, which ultimately led to new ideas of autonomy.

Welcome to September 19th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate sweet treats and scurvy sea dogs. If you're a fan of sweet desserts then you'll appreciate today's celebration of butterscotch pudding. An 1848 newspaper offers the scoop on this dessert. According to “Housewife's Corner” and Masluk Cream Co., the real recipe for “making Doncaster butterscotch is one pound of butter, one pound of sugar and a quarter of a pound of treacle, boiled together.” Treacle is a thick, molasses-like syrup that gives this pudding its caramel flavor. And if you're in a grownup mood you can spike your pudding with bourbon or rum. On National Butterscotch Pudding Day, butter up your sweet tooth with this creamy satisfying dessert. Before Captain Jack Sparrow captured our imagination for a buccaneer life, legendary pirates owned the high seas. Many of the sources for these stories are highly unreliable and based many on fearsome legends. Today we celebrate scurvy sea dogs and cutting a rug. Ahoy, me hearties!  Batten down the hatches for one of the best days of the year.  It's Talk Like A Pirate Day, when you can unleash your inner buccaneer and pretend you're a wiley old sea dog.  Why say, “okay” when you can say “Aye Aye” instead?  And why let Johnny Depp have all the fun?  Some places offer discounts when you dress like a pirate and order like one too.  But steer clear of any landlubbers who can't take a joke, because clearly you've been waiting all year for this day. Square dancing evolved from traditional European social dances, with most of the terms it uses coming from French.  Why French?  Because after the Revolutionary War, Americans embraced anything that wasn't British. Social dances in Europe followed memorized steps, but American dances were less formal.  Because no one wanted to learn a whole dance routine, one of square dancing's most distinguishing features was born.  A caller leads everyone through the dance steps so that dancers only need to be good listeners in order to have a good time.  During National Square Dance Month it's a great time to Do-Si Do and Promenade into a whole new hobby.
