Steve is joined by Felicity and Josh from Leisure Networks, who are both involved in the Power2Pedal program. Power2Pedal was created as a direct response to a survey circulated by Cycling Victoria - in which families expressed a desire for their children to have more opportunities to learn how to ride, get out into the community, socialise with people and be physically active. Leisure Networks listened to that feedback and co-designed a brilliant program to help overcome the specific barriers of children and teens living with autism. Monique Hanley is a former bike racer who does a ton of work promoting cycling, especially women's cycling, and especially through her roles on the Executive Board of Cycling Victoria, and as chair of Cycling Australia's Women's Commission, and she's one of my very favourite people in cycling. She joined me on the podcast to tell me all about the Aussie Summer of Cycling, and why we should all be meeting up in Melbourne and Adelaide for January 2017. January is an amazing month for Australian road cycling, and it's fantastic to see the strong UCI mini-season for the women back Down Under. We talked about how cycling has changed for the country - and given Monique's roles in Cycling Federations, we also talked about the recent Genèvieve Jeanson podcast and story on Cyclingnews, and what cycling bodies can learn from her experience, and prevent anything similar happening in the future. May 1, 2014 These three amazing women are treats to listen to by themselves but together they are absolutely stunning. This is a podcast you don't want to miss! This week the two titans of women cycling reporting, Clara Beard and Sarah Connolly (Cohost of The Unofficial Unsanctioned Women's UCI Cycling Podcast), talk with the amazing Monique Hanley. Monique is an Executive Board Member of Cycling Victoria and Chair of Cycling Australia's Women's Cycling Commission. She has also ridden across Canada and the United States, as well as won a bronze at Australia's Track National Championships. Monique was also a member of Team Type 1's race team until a traumatic crash and recently gave birth to a beautiful baby. Clara, Sarah, and Monique discuss how Monique got into cycling, got Cycling Victoria to where they are now, and how she developed templates for other federations to use as tools to enhance women's cycling. The ladies discuss how Monique broke through the Old School mentality related to equal prize money. Listen in to find out how Monique established a mandate that required any sanctioned race in Victoria to have equal prize money, what "equal is equal" means, and how silly it is for any race organizer to fight against equal prize money. Clara then talks to Monique about the importance of setting up junior/u23 races transition races, the growing popularity of cyclocross in Australia, and Clara suggests she teaches the Aussie's the importance of "the rubber chicken hand up." The trio then discusses the controversial topic of "podium girls" and how Monique banned podium models in Victoria. They finish the show with the topics of sports elitist culture and the impact it has on women's participation and how Cycling Victoria strives to retain new race license holders.
