Karen Read faces a jury once again in what some are calling “the retrial of the century.” Prosecutors allege Read hit her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe, with her SUV, leaving him to die in the snow, while she claims that she is not only innocent, but that someone close to O'Keefe is framing her for murder. This week's Court TV Podcast features key testimony from the Commonwealth's case: Christina Hanley, a trace analyst with the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab. Plastic Found on Deep In O'Keefe's Clothing Matches Karen Read's Taillight - Forensic Bombshell In this critical segment of the Karen Read trial, Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab forensic scientist Christina Hanley delivered testimony that bolsters the prosecution's narrative: that John O'Keefe was struck and left to die—while key trace evidence ties back to Read's SUV. Hanley's testimony focused on three main forensic categories: glass fragments, plastic from the taillight, and debris found in John O'Keefe's clothing. Her analysis confirmed that six out of nine pieces of broken glass recovered from the road (Item 7-12) physically matched a drinking glass (Item 3-2) found shattered at the scene. These were “jigsaw-style” physical matches—clear, visible break lines that could not be coincidental. Crucially, no glass from the bumper of Karen Read's vehicle (Item 3-3) matched the cup. That undercuts any attempt to suggest the bumper glass proves an alternate chain of events. But the prosecution's win didn't end there. Hanley's testimony also tied red and clear plastic found on John O'Keefe's shirt directly back to the passenger-side taillight of Karen Read's SUV. The plastic wasn't just “similar” in color—it was microscopically and instrumentally consistent, meaning it shared the same optical, structural, and chemical characteristics under forensic analysis (including FTIR and microspectrophotometry). Although forensic scientists stop short of declaring a definitive source, “consistency” across multiple scientific instruments is the gold standard in trace evidence—and the jury heard that loud and clear. This detailed forensic testimony is a massive problem for the defense. The physical match confirms O'Keefe was in proximity to the cup and the scene. The trace plastic suggests direct contact with Read's vehicle. And no glass evidence ties back to any other suspect. #KarenRead #JohnOKeefe #ForensicMatch #CrimeLabEvidence #ProsecutionEvidence #TaillightMatch #MassStatePolice #TrueCrime #GlassAnalysis #JusticeForOKeefe Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Day 20 Recap: Skull Fractures & Lexus Shards: How Prosecutors Are Proving She Hit John

Day 20 Recap: Skull Fractures & Lexus Shards: How Prosecutors Are Proving She Hit John In today's Hidden Killers, we're breaking down what may be one of the most scientifically significant days yet in the trial of Karen Read. Day 20 delivered not just one, but two critical expert witnesses—each bringing their own piece of the puzzle that could influence how the jury understands the final hours of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe's life. First, we heard from neurosurgeon Dr. Aizik Wolf, who laid out a blunt and clinical explanation of how O'Keefe died—and why the injuries don't line up with a violent beating. According to Wolf, the fracture at the base of O'Keefe's skull and the deep brain contusions point to one thing: a backward fall onto a hard surface. Not a bat. Not a hammer. A fall. He testified that the so-called “raccoon eyes” bruising around O'Keefe's eyes—which develops 1 to 3 hours after injury—suggest a delayed death, and possibly a delayed discovery. His testimony didn't just challenge assumptions—it dismantled them. And when the defense questioned his credentials, his answer cut through the courtroom like a scalpel: “I'm not a forensic pathologist. I'm a brain surgeon.” But the day didn't stop there. In the second half, we heard from forensic trace expert Christina Hanley, who took jurors into the microscopic world of crime scene fragments. Hanley testified that red and clear plastic found on O'Keefe's clothing was consistent with the material used in Lexus SUV tail lights—the same type of vehicle driven by Karen Read. She emphasized that while the fragments couldn't be definitively sourced, they were indistinguishable from Read's broken tail light. She also reconstructed part of a shattered cocktail glass found near the scene and noted that some glass recovered from Read's SUV did not match—while others were too damaged to analyze. Today wasn't about one big revelation. It was about accumulating evidence. A fall that may have caused death. Plastic that may have transferred in that moment. Glass that may have shattered at the scene. And expert witnesses who didn't deal in absolutes, but in probabilities and patterns that could be enough to sway a jury. This is Day 20. And we're just getting to the forensic backbone of the case. Karen Read Trial Day 19 Breakdown - Forensic Showdown As Timeline Survives Resume Attack In today's explosive session of the Karen Read murder trial, the defense launched a full-on assault—not against the timeline, not against the data, but against the man who delivered it: digital forensics expert Shanon Burgess. Defense attorney Alan Jackson hammered Burgess over old versions of his résumé, which falsely listed a bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Under oath, Burgess admitted he never earned the degree—fueling the defense's claim that his testimony shouldn't be trusted. But did the argument land? Not according to the Commonwealth. Prosecutor Hank Brennan struck back hard in redirect, pointing out that Burgess had updated his CV in 2024 to say he was “currently pursuing” the degree, and that the flawed version in question was submitted by a staffer in a completely unrelated case. More importantly, Brennan reminded the court: Burgess's credentials were not the reason he was called to testify—his evidence was. And that evidence still stands: forensic data that places Karen Read's Lexus reversing at the exact moment John O'Keefe's iPhone stopped moving. That timeline didn't change, even when the résumé drama played out. The jury also heard from Christina Hanley, a forensic scientist with the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab. Hanley walked them through physical evidence collected from the scene and Read's SUV—glass shards, taillight fragments, and a clear drinking cup. The defense tried to poke holes by highlighting a date misstatement, but the impact was minimal. The evidence, like the timeline, was intact. This episode unpacks the resume attack, the prosecution's defense, and why, at the end of the day, you can question a man's degree—but not the truth in the data. #KarenRead #JohnOKeefe #KarenReadTrial #ShanonBurgess #ForensicEvidence #TrueCrimeCourtroom #ProsecutionStrategy #FakeDegree #CrimeSceneAnalysis #ChristinaHanley Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?  Check out our YouTube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/@hiddenkillerspod Instagram https://www.instagram.com/hiddenkillerspod/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/hiddenkillerspod/ Tik-Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@hiddenkillerspod X Twitter https://x.com/tonybpod Listen Ad-Free On Apple Podcasts Here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/true-crime-today-premium-plus-ad-free-advance-episode/id1705422872

As BCBAs, each day we walk a fine line between keeping children safe while ensuring our interventions are compassionate, ethical, and effective. Prioritizing safety in behavior management is a non-negotiable and it doesn't have to come at the expense of empathy. Here, we discuss the best ways to balance safety and compassion in our interventions and how to ensure that the individuals we serve are not only protected but also respected and empowered. When developing interventions, it's important to use the least intrusive, most effective strategies. We discuss how to build a foundation of trust and antecedent-based intervention as proactive strategies. We also cover the importance of regulation for both ourselves and our learners, how to determine whether corrective behavior is essential, and how to hold appropriate boundaries.Dr. Hanley's Universal Protocol is a great guideline to have when balancing safety and compassion. This is not a show about teaching eye contact. We'll get to that in a bit. First though, I should note that the 22nd installment of the Inside JABA Series is coming out comically late. I apologize for getting us off schedule. The good news is that we already have a great paper to discuss for the 23rd Inside JABA episode that I think you're going to love, so I hope to have that one out later on in the spring. Back to this episode. Drs. Danny Conine and Jenn Fritz join me to discuss a paper Danny wrote with his colleagues called, "Evaluating a screening-to-intervention model with caregiver training for response to name among children with autism." There are so many great things about this paper, and listeners will be able to tell this from my enthusiasm in discussing it with Danny and Jenn. As I noted above, this is not about teaching eye contact, but rather, a more generalized repertoire of responding to one's name (RTN). We get into why these two things are different, and, as Danny tells it, RTN repertoires have many benefits that directly impact learning and safety. In this paper, he describes an elegant assessment and intervention that his research team implemented to develop RTN in the study's participants. In carrying out this study, they also employed a simple and effective assent withdrawal component, which we get into. Then, they took what the skills they developed in a clinic setting, and taught the participant's caregivers to implement RTN procedures at home. As such, this paper provides a great example of how to generalize skills across settings. Very cool! Along the way, Danny provides practical tips clinicians can consider for their own practice. All of this to say, I'm hoping you'll agree that the wait for this episode will be worth it! Resources discussed in this podcast: Conine, et al. (2025). I love when people don't accept the status quo from the medical field. One disease where there is no known cure, and not much is known about its cause or treatments for it, is Parkinson's an uncurable neurological disease. So Scott Hanley of Belfast, Northern Ireland chose a different path to dealing with getting diagnosed with it, and as a result believes he has reduced his symptoms by 95%! Repeat, 95%! That's simply unheard of. He didn't do anything magic, take any banned substances, or sell his soul to the Devil. Parkinson's patients are usually instructed to engage their minds more. Scott added to this advice with some very commonsense approaches, including tweaking his nutrition and moving his body. But Scott reasoned that just doing cardio would actually be more mind-numbing, so this former Royal Army soldier engaged in short-burst exercises, which he could easily do during the lockdown of the pandemic. This eventually led him to a CrossFit gym in Belfast, where he found a community to engage with and where he has become an inspirational participant.  Scott has found the CrossFit workouts have continued to keep his mind and body strong and moving, so much so that for a couple of years, many in the gym weren't even aware of his Parkinson's. Scott's experiences have given him a unique perspective into resilience, and he shares his story, which might motivate anyone to also find their own solutions when facing a tough medical diagnosis.Scott HanleyInstagram @thrive_happensBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

When things don't go as planned or we experience sudden schedule changes, we become disappointed or frustrated. For children with autism, unexpected disruptions in routine or a person's actions often lead to them demonstrating challenging behaviors. In order to help our learners become more flexible, we can use these moments to teach tolerance. Here, we discuss how to help our learners tolerate the stress that comes with things not going their way. Many become stuck and have trouble moving on from one thing to another when they're faced with unplanned changes in routine. We talk about how to uncover the root cause of their rigidity and reasons behind behaviors. We also discuss how to choose the right examples to work with, how to utilize priming (or pre-teaching), and how to remain supportive through the process. On February 20th at 12pm EST, we're hosting a CEU event called Teaching Tolerance: A Flexible Approach to Behavior Management. Fighting for her rightful inheritance of the English crown, Empress Matilda (1110–1125) proved to be a grandmaster in the Anarchy's bloody chess game. The war of dynastic succession in 12th century England and Normandy is known as the Anarchy. (1135-1154). Barons and nobles of all ranks joined in the family quarrel over the succession to Henry I. Matilda, Henry's only surviving legitimate child and widow of Holy Roman Emperor Henry V, challenged her cousin and rival Stephen of Blois, who managed to seize the crown. This was a game of chess or chequers, in which seizing castles and fortified towns was what mattered, as well as bringing nobles with their retainers over to one's side. Matilda played astutely but only won when she ceased to pursue the crown for herself and demanded it for her son. She continued as the power behind Henry II's throne from Normandy. This episode's guest, Dr Catherine Hanley, is the author of the latest scholarly biography of Empress Matilda, Matilda: Empress, Queen, Warrior (Yale University Press, 2019). Holding a PhD in Medieval Studies from the University of Sheffield, she is the author of several history books.

SCOTT HANLEY is a remarkable advocate for resilience, mindset, and physical health, having reversed the symtoms of Parkinson's Disease. His story is a powerful testament of    - a personal growth, mindset and change.    Diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2017, Scott faced debilitating symptoms that impacted his daily life, including muscle rigidity, tremors, and intense sleep disturbances. Rather than resigning to a progressive decline, he took an unconventional route, combining high-intensity physical and cognitive exercises to effectively “train his brain” and regain control. Through CrossFit, Scott found a program that paired physical intensity with cognitive challenge, dramatically reversing his symptoms and leaving him 95% symptom-free—an outcome that has amazed his neurologists.  Scott delves into his transformative journey from his initial Parkinson's diagnosis to becoming 95% symptom-free, challenging traditional medical expectations along the way. He shares the pivotal moments that reshaped his mindset, the unconventional methods he adopted—like combining CrossFit and cognitive exercises—and the impact of these practices on his life. This conversation covers Scott's belief in the power of mindset, the importance of self-advocacy in health, and his hope to inspire others facing chronic illness to redefine their potential.   Check out the documentary on YouTube: https://youtu.be/btCAoAjSAc8?si=jq464PgOLHkiDkjL

The 2017 film The Man Who Invented Christmas, starring human treasure Dan Stevens as Charles Dickens, is a lovely bit of an anachronistic historical revisionism (though, to be fair, it gets a number of things right both in fact and in, pardon the pun, spirit). But it also perpetuates an increasingly popular myth - that Charles Dickens...well...invented Christmas. At least, that is, Christmas as we think of it today. There are a lot of reasons why this seems true, and, yes, Dicken's A Christmas Carol played an enormous role in a Victorian revival and redefining of Christmas - but that revival was happening with him or without him. So we decided to take a closer look at Victorian society in the 1940s and exam how religious - or not - Dickens and A Christmas Carol actually were. Kelly and John invited Victorianist Kristen Hanley Cardozo to share some of her expertise and talk about spirits, Scrooges, and the real reasons for the season.

“Here And Now” Letters To Cleo may seemed to have suddenly shown up on the pop culture landscape in 1994, but the fact is, the Boston outfit had been grinding it out on the club since 1990. Their single “Here and Now” was an instant classic—a melodic dose of perfect pop stomp that showcased singer Hanley's powerful vocal delivery. The band tore through the ‘90s, releasing three perfect albums (Aurora Gory Alice, Wholesale Meats And Fishes and Go), appeared as the house band in 10 Things I Hate About You, played SXSW, and playing with everyone from Cheap Trick to Neds Atomic Dustbin. Oh, and I almost forgot: In 1996, playing Mary Magladene, Hanley co-starred with Extreme's Gary Cherone in the Boston Rock Opera's performance of Jesus Christ Superstar. In the early 2000's, Hanley was the singing voice for Rachel Leigh Cook in Josie and the Pussycats and though the band called it a day that same year, they did record 15 new and original songs for the Kids' WB cartoon Generation O! That will become important in a second, but just to round out the corners here, Hanley toured as a back-up singer for Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana venture, put out a handful of great solo releases, sang the National Anthem at Gillette stadium for the Patriots and got to work on her new career, composing all-original songs for animated TV shows like Doc McStufins, DC Super Hero Girls, and Harvey Girls Forever, to name a few. How's that career going? Well, in 2022 Hanley won an Emmy for songwriting on We The People. So I'd say, not too shabby. On that front, she and her writing partners Michelle Lewis, Dan Petty and Charlton Pettus created Disney Jr.'s Kindergarten: The Musical and Hanley is also co-executive director of Songwriters of North America (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songwriters_of_North_America), an LA-based non-profit which advocates for fair pay and other rights for songwriters. As for Letters to Cleo? Well, the band may no longer be a full-time concern, but they pop up here and there to play gigs. They just completed a mini-November tour and they have a show on Jan 9th in Madison at the Majestic. Get your tickets now. Well, listen to the show, THEN get your tickets. Or multi-task. Is Democracy Failing to Deliver?

A common argument to explain the ongoing global democratic crisis is that democracy has failed to deliver safe and prosperous lives for its citizens and people are getting disenchanted with it. Thomas Carothers and Brendan Hartnett talk with host Licia Cianetti about why this is in fact not the case. Democracies the world over, they argue, are not being undone by disenchanted citizens but by leaders with predatory political ambitions that use all opportunities to defy constraints to their power. Thomas Carothers is the Harvey V. Fineberg Chair and director of the Democracy, Conflict, and Governance Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. His co-authored piece with Brendan Hartnett on “Misunderstanding Democratic Backsliding” was published in the July 2024 issue of the Journal of Democracy. Brendan Hartnett was Junior Fellow at the Carnegie's Democracy, Conflict, and Governance Program and is now a Research Associate at Longwell Partners. Licia Cianetti is Lecturer in Political Science and International Studies at the University of Birmingham and Deputy Co-Director of CEDAR. Her piece on “The End of the Backsliding Paradigm” (with Seán Hanley) was also published in the Journal of Democracy. The People, Power, Politics podcast brings you the latest insights into the factors that are shaping and re-shaping our political world. It is brought to you by the Centre for Elections, Democracy, Accountability and Representation (CEDAR) based at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. Dr. Anthony Cammilleri - better known as Tony to friends and colleagues - joins me in Session 276. In this episode, we talked about his early experiences in Behavior Analyst, his experiences working in Greg Hanley's lab as a grad student, of course his work collaborating with Greg and other colleagues in the founding and development of the FTF consultancy, the recent news of his migration over to Action Behavior Centers, and what opportunities lie ahead in this partnership. We then talk more generally about what's new in the world of the IISCA or Practical Functional Assessment, along with Skills-Based Treatment, and how those processes have evolved over the years, common mistakes people make when implementing these procedures, and more. We also talked about my semi-misgivings about terms like Compassionate-ABA, Trauma-Informed-ABA, Trauma-Assumed-ABA, and the like, as well as Tony's upcoming talk at the 2024 Stone Soup Conference.
