The pandemic has isolated young people, and the vaping industry focuses on this group, with advertising, including using social media like Tiktok. Additionally, vaping devices are often shaped as everyday items like highlighters or hoodie toggles. Dr. Demaio explains how these devices should be restricted, and that we already know that they can cause infections in the lungs, which can lead to chronic problems, including cancer. The chemicals can also damage the heart and brain.Dr Demaio shares how he is also pushing for a national agency for independent health advice, or an ‘Australian CDC'. Salt: as a natural resource it's found everywhere from our tears, perspiration to the ocean Would you believe the earliest evidence of humans producing salt dates back to 6000 BC in northern China? So, it's been part of our lives for thousands of years. Much like sugar, however, salt is also hidden in so many of our everyday foods. Without knowing it, three-quarters of the salt we eat is already in everyday foods such as bread, breakfast cereal, and ready meals, so for this reason, it's very easy for us to exceed our daily intake without knowing it For better health, we all need to limit our daily salt intake to the recommended amount, because as we know, the side effects of too much salt are detrimental to adults, but we also need to take into consideration the impacts it has on children and babies To help talk to us about some tasty and healthy salt alternatives we welcome back our special guest Siobhan Boyle, CEO of Jamie The Good Foundation We ask Siobhan questions including: How important is it for parents to reduce salt content in their household diets and home-cooked meals to the recommended amount? How much salt is the right amount? Is it true that some foods with a high salt content won't taste very salty at all? Why is too much salt bad for both an adult and a child's diet? What are some easy alternatives to ensure meals still taste delicious? What are your go-to herbs that every parent should have in their kitchen to flavour up meals? Simon Tulett explores the reasons for this relationship's long history and hears about the damage it could be doing to young, impressionable fans. If this sponsorship is a problem, whose job is it to end it, and can it be done without leaving event organisers, athletes and grassroots sport facing a financial black hole? On The Down Lola is breaking down the topic of Diversity & Inclusion in a series of episodes. In this episode of OTDL, Lola is joined by a good Pride Judy, Tiffany Hanson. They broke down the often over looked topic of barriers to inclusion due to language.  Tiffany works for LUNA Language Services, and Indy Pride here in the greater Indianapolis area. She is also a member of the Diversity Round Table of Central Indiana. We looked at a few barriers to inclusion due to language and some starter solutions to bridging the gap.  Some of LUNA's services: On-site Interpreting: Ensure that larger meetings, community forums, and education and outreach events are accessible to all community members Phone Interpreting: Use for quick interactions to facilitate assessment conversations and discussions containing sensitive information On-site ASL Interpreting: Manage ongoing communication and engage new Deaf or hard of hearing constituents Video Remote Interpreting (VRI): Use for brief discussions with your Deaf or Hard of Hearing constituents such as question answering and appointment scheduling Document and Website Translation: Expand the exposure of your outreach by translating your written materials into common languages found in your area (via website, outreach and education materials, social media posts, and surveys) Training for Bilingual Staff: An introduction to industry best-practices for your multilingual staff to act as informal interpreters when appropriate Cultural Training: Create a more welcoming and inclusive workplace Some Possible Solutions To reach the deaf and hard of hearing groups, ensure all video announcements are accessible with a trained ASL interpreter. Provide a transcript of all video messaging with each announcement to support Deaf and hard of hearing employees. If a transcript is provided, you might also consider translating that into other major languages in your workforce. Announcements shared via social media can be quickly and easily translated or made into a quick ASL video to ensure accessibility and reach. Facebook is heavily utilized by the Deaf and multilingual communities in Indiana. Having a live event, Know who your multi-lingual workers are and have ASL interpreters in key areas: Front Gate Information Booth Bar STAGE! Ask performers prior to show for lyric sheets for interpreters Give copy of hosting notes. Benefits of Multi-Lingual societies Marc Ettlinger, Ph.D. in linguistics, “…language may influence implicit cultural attitudes toward a gender, race, or other named entity. Language can also affect how stories are reported and may even influence the art of a society.” “…a broader vocabulary can allow you to think faster, which there is ample evidence for.” A Forbes study found that a diverse and inclusive workplace is a major driver of innovation and growth. A study from VicHealth provides evidence that cultural diversity can enhance business performance and productivity, increase creative thinking, save time and money, reduce risk and promote staff health and wellbeing

Diversity has become a catchcry, a battle cry and an umbrella term for opportunity and access—but is it holding us back? Does the framing of diversity in conversations about our cities and institutions continue to keep minorities and the underprivileged at the margins? How can we move beyond a focus on otherness, and to where do we move? As political and economic forces create rapidly changing populations, engaging design to respond to these changes is not only essential but also urgent. The reason that people come to your community impacts how you manage that community. It is one of the factors that guides the choices you make and the strategies and processes that you deploy. If people come to your community because they have cancer, your approach is going to be different than if they were coming because a product broke or because they enjoy a particular hobby. That’s exactly the type of community that Cosette Paneque of Breast Cancer Network Australia is responsible for. On this episode, we discuss the unique circumstances around managing a community that connects around breast cancer, including: The first thing Cosette wants new members, who may have just received the worst news of their life, to see Creating processes around death in our communities How cancer survivors continue to contribute to the community Big Quotes “The first thing I want [new members, who may have just been diagnosed with cancer] to see is that they’re not alone. … If they live in a rural place, they may be the only person with breast cancer. They may have never met someone with metastatic cancer. When they go on the [BCNA] online network, that’s the first thing I want them to know, is that they’re not alone, and they don’t have to go through this alone.” -@CosettePaneque “What we do, [when a member passes away, is] close the account, but we change the role from member to dragonfly, which is a very special symbol for us at BCNA. We also put a little image of a dragonfly next to their photo. So, people will often go to their profile or start a thread and talk about how wonderful this person was and how they helped them and how they knew them. [Before doing this, we asked our members.] They thought it was just lovely and very respectful. They loved the image of the dragonfly, because they know that it’s got special significance to our organization.” -@CosettePaneque “[Members who have faced breast cancer can] become community liaisons. … We help them learn how to share their story, how to speak to the media, how to speak at special events. We also use them in our campaigns and our commercials, because we only use real people in anything that we do. We always use our people. We never hire actors or anything like that. That would just not be appropriate at all when we have this amazing network of incredible, brave, courageous people who are more than happy to share their story. Some of them go on to become consumer representatives, which is a specialized training. They sit at the table with decision-makers and help shape the future of how breast cancer might be treated and supported in Australia.” -@CosettePaneque About Cosette Paneque After years of dying of dysentery on The Oregon Trail and playing Jeopardy! on a Commodore 64, Cosette Paneque took to the internet like a duck takes to water. Being a community member led to working in community. In 2010, she moved into the community management space with the US-based moderation company ModSquad and got to work with cool companies such as Warner Bros., Animal Jam, Kabam, Second Life, U.S. Army, Konami, The Playforge, ReachOut and Pathevo. Cosette moved to Australia in 2012. In 2014, she joined Quiip, Australia’s leading social media and online community management and moderation company. While there, she worked with ReachOut, SANE, The Line, AMP Capital, VicHealth and NSW Health. Currently, Cosette is the online community manager for Breast Cancer Network Australia. "One of the symptoms of being a well balanced man is to have a fully functioning brain; one that is capable of engaging in excellent criticical thinking, reproduction of of that same process over and over again, animation and controlling yearning flow.  From this thought comes the title of this blog."  "So important is salt to humans that our taste buds are specifically designed to detect its presence in our food...Unlike sodium, however, the importance of chloride to the human is far less well documented.  In fact, at the time of typing this note, 12 July 2015, there has NEVER been a medical study undertaken to establish the optimum levels of chloride intake for maximising human health...The covenant between man and The Creator, according to the Old Testament, is sealed with salt.  That same text tells us that The Creator specifically requested that offerings to The Almighty be well seasoned with salt...Despite our total dependence upon adequate levels of salt in our bodies to maintain our life function, we are told by the various public health authorities that salt is bad for us and that we should restrict our salt intake to as low 5gms per day (WHO and VicHealth for example)."  "The readers are given notice that I have had no medical training, and nothing written here shall be construed as medical advice." ~Frank McManus    FRANK MCMANUS, AN OUNCE OF SALT PER DAY http://www.big-lies.org/salt/ HE SELLS SALT, BUY SOME SALT FROM HIM!!!!!!!!!
