Send us a textWhen organisations face a need for transformation, Boards must become catalysts for change. This requires specific behaviours so that Boards can successfully go beyond oversight to provide strategic leadership when it is needed most.In this podcast, Dr Sabine Dembkowski, Founder and Managing Partner, is joined by Lan O'Connor, a global transformation leader with deep experience in enterprise change. Lan helped lead Capgemini from a European to an international footprint. Today, she serves on a number of high-profile Boards. “Change is part of life, part of business life. But transformation, thinking about transformation with a capital T, it's not a change.”For Lan, transformation goes beyond routine change. It is a fundamental rewiring of a company's centre of gravity while retaining the cultural core. It requires four things:  agreement that the current state is not viable, an articulated future state, a watertight business case, and a scale so immense that the transformation is the singular agenda for the executive team and Board for the duration of the transformation.“For a board, often a transformation with a capital T is perceived as a risk with a capital R.”The role of the Board when it comes to a proposed transformation is one of active strategic engagement. To Lan, in the first Board meeting about a transformation, the role of the Board is to vet the necessity of acting. The second step is to approve the business case. The third step is to scrutinise the approach and execution plans, as Lan believes the execution plan is where failure often hides, and Boards can make a significant difference. “It's the Board's role to make sure that it has a good beginning, a powerful middle, and that the end point allows the company to breathe at the new level.”Lan sees the Boards as the Executive Producers of a blockbuster movie. Boards must thus address rational, political, and emotional elements in play. The rational element is the business case. The political element ensures the Board and management team can act, make tough decisions, and escalate issues. Emotional elements reflect the level of buy-in needed for the transformation.“One critical element to have at a board level is an ally versed in the psychology of transformation.”Many Board members have experience with transformations, but not necessarily as the leader accountable for the change. They need supporting perspectives. A transformation guide can provide support in tough moments, fight process fatigue, and give insights into the pace of change. “I always say to Board members or even Executive Board members … to adopt a kind of an interview mindset.”Lan believes that Board members benefit when they can explain what is happening and why in terms that an outsider could understand. This minimises jargon and boosts transparency. The top three (plus bonus) takeaways from our conversation for effective boards are:1.      Understand the rational, political, and emotional elements.2.     Transformation is not a one-and-done exercise. He previously spent seven years as a high school choir director in North Carolina where his students were consistently chosen for honor choirs on the local, state, and regional level, while being immersed in a program that stressed collaborative music-making and artistic excellence.Dr. Haley's research interests include pedagogy for neurodivergent learners in the choral rehearsal, and Arvo Pärt's sacred choral music. He has been invited to present at state and regional ACDA and MEA conferences and served as a clinician or adjudicator in Alabama, North Carolina, Ohio, and South Carolina. He has served as a pastoral musician for Baptist, Presbyterian, Reformed Jewish, and United Methodist congregations and held leadership roles on the Executive Board of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and the Southern Region Conference of the American Choral Directors Association.Dr. Haley holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from the University of South Carolina, as well as a B.A. in Music from Wingate University and an M.M. in Church Music from Samford University. Dionne Koller is Professor of Law and the Director of the Center for Sport and the Law at the University of Baltimore. Professor Koller's scholarly focus is sports law, particularly in the areas of youth, Olympic and Paralympic, and education-based sports, and she is a frequent media commentator and consultant to state and federal legislatures on issues related to sports and the law. In 2021, Professor Koller was appointed by Sen. Maria Cantwell to co-chair the Commission on the State of U.S. Olympic and Paralympics, which delivered its final report to Congress in 2024. Professor Koller also has served as chair and as a member of the Executive Board for the Sports Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools, is a member of the United States Anti-Doping Agency's Administrative Review Panel, and is on the editorial board for the INTERNATIONAL SPORTS LAW JOURNAL. Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Volker Then, an independent Senior Impact Analyst who is launching a start-up company on Comprehensive Impact Measurement together with a coalition of impact partners. From 2022 to 2024, Volker was Founding Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Executive Board of Fondazione AIS (Advancing Impact and Sustainability) in Bologna. Earlier in his career, Volker was Executive Director of the Centre for Social Investment at Heidelberg University for 15 years and also served as Director Philanthropy and Foundations at the Bertelsmann Foundation. He is a former member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the OECD's Global Action “Social and Solidarity Economy” and served on the National Advisory Board of the G7-Social Impact Investment Task Force. Impact is a big word nowadays – maybe even a buzzword – and people in our space are using it broadly and frequently. But it's not clear that everyone has a clear shared definition of the term. Volker provides his definition of “impact”, especially as it relates to enterprise families and the objectives they set for themselves with regard to fulfilling the purpose of their wealth and their family capital. In this episode of The Art Career, Emily travels to Galerie Lelong & Co in Chelsea to sit down with gallerist Mary Sabbatino. Mary Sabbatino is Vice President and Partner of Galerie Lelong & Co., New York. She was appointed director of the New York location of Galerie Lelong & Co. in 1991 and became a gallery partner in 2007. In 2021, she was awarded the prestigious Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) from the Government of France. Championing a diverse roster of contemporary artists from throughout the world, the gallery has pioneered the community both in presenting a balanced roster of male and female artists, and artists from the Global South. Contributing to the overarching contemporary art scene, she served on the boards of ArtTable and the Executive Board of the Art Dealers' Association of America, during which she initiated and co-authored the ADAA's first code of ethics. Sabbatino served on the Selection Committee for Art Basel Miami Beach (2013-2020), the Art Basel Joint Selection Committee, and is a founding member of the Council for the Elizabeth Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum, New York. In 2020, along with colleagues from international galleries, she initiated the platforms Galleries Curate and SOUTH SOUTH. In addition to fostering the careers and legacies of the gallery's artists, Sabbatino co-curated Art from Brazil in New York (1995) which presented the first solo exhibitions of the region's most vital figures—Waltercio Caldas, Cildo Meireles, Hélio Oiticica, Mira Schendel, and Tunga—and curated Juan Downey: Video Installations and Drawings (1995), at the Museo Bellas Artes, Santiago, Chile.
