Editor's Note: Due to a technical issue, this is our first episode back. We recorded this episode as the second entry in the Anti-Trash Marathon, the first was to drop last week but the file messed up and we were unable to get that episode posted. It'll forever join a handful of other films as one of the few lost GoodTrash episodes. Welcome back dear listener! The Anti-Trash marathon continues this week on your favorite film analysis podcast, the GoodTrash GenreCast. This week, we take on Luis Bunuel's surrealist dinner party classic, The Exterminating Angel (1962). Dustin presents a quick rundown of Bunuel's career and what shaped this influential classic. Is it worth the wait time? Or should you cut out early? Find out as we apply our style of film criticism to The Exterminating Angel. This week's game provides a lot of laughs as we talk about 3 Movie Characters We Wouldn't Want to be Stuck with at a Dinner Party. We then move into the film analysis section to breakdown The Extermintating Angel. Dalton kicks things off by talking about Sartes' idea that "hell is other people". He examines the sociological factors of being stuck with other people and how those underlying tensions are cranked to 11 by Bunuel. Caleb presents his film analysis next by talking about the facade of appearances and the bourgeoisie. He talks about the economic history of the country. He argues that the context of putting it in Spain meant highlighting a country that didn't feel much of the same impact of World War II as other countries. Dustin piggybacks off the conversation before him and looks at the film's critique of fascism. He gives some more historical context of what was happening in Spain. Dustin argues that the bourgeoisie hold up the facade of capitalism. That's it for this week. Now, we've got to get ready for our upcoming dinner. The table is set, will you hang around? A new issue of Comics Talk Comics is ready...kind of? This week we are coming back to Marvel's 1970's Star Wars comics. Also, it's worth mentioning that we've been sitting on this one for a while because the last half of the podcast went missing. We're sorry. Also, this was one of the first on the new rig, which is now almost a year ago, so we were still working on learning the new mics. Again, sorry. Also, we really didn't get our names or the podcast in the intro because we ended up bullshitting for about an hour before doing the podcast (during the longest sound-check ever), so our names appear over an hour later. So...sorry? Host Daniel Brown, Co-host Norm de Plume, Special Guest* Matt Moseley, and other guest Jason Switzer meet up to discuss Star Wars #8, which is basically The Seven Star Warsai. Only, since the last half is missing, we end up doing a lot of banter about Star Wars vs. Star Trek after the "bowwww....babowbowbowbowbooowwwww..." part of the podcast. *Editor's Note: Due to this taking place long before Issue #50 Matt Moseley, in this particular episode, is still Special Guest. twitter - comstalkcomics reddit - comicstalkcomics email - comicstalkcomics@gmail.com Facebook - Comics Talk Comics Facebook Page
Editor's Note: Due to multiple recording errors, this afternoon's podcast is an optimized recording from an iPhone. Because of this, it is difficult to hear clearly. My very sincere apologies. If anyone can improve the quality further, I would love to publish a better version. Please email Lizzy at podcasts@sbinstitute.com if you are interested. Also, Alan requests that transcriptions of the afternoon sessions from the past two weeks be created. If you are interested in transcribing one or more afternoon sessions, please email ksnow@sbinstitute.com with the name of the podcast you want to transcribe. This will be of great benefit to many people. This afternoon, Alan first guides a beautiful meditation that integrates shamatha, equanimity, compassion, and loving-kindness. He then summarizes the pith points of the last two days of discussion on the development of science and its relationship to the science of the mind of Buddhism. After that, [55:00] Alan gives us tips for integrating back into the "outside world," and we finish the afternoon with a comment from a participant.
Alan Wallace guides a 24-minute meditation on awareness of awareness, teaching us to invert the awareness deeply, attending closely to the evidence of someone - an agent - in one's mind that stands apart from and somehow controls the body and mind. Guided meditation begins at 5:20 in the recording. Editor's Note: Due to a recording error, this session may be difficult to for some to hear clearly. Our sincere apologies.
