Tim Rice sits down with Daily Wire Upstream editor Madeleine Fry Schultz for a special pop-culture edition of Behind the Story. They break down the internet's biggest celebrity conversations of the moment — starting with the backlash over Ariana Grande's new "Petal" music video, where she pushes back on fans and media who've raised concerns about her weight and appearance. From there, they widen the lens to pop music's biggest names: Sabrina Carpenter's campy sex-symbol persona, Olivia Rodrigo's Lou Reed-style pivot (and her outspoken Planned Parenthood advocacy), and Hilary Duff's surprisingly wholesome comeback tour. Did Perez Hilton suffer a mental breakdown, or was he possessed by a demon? Allie dives into how the blogger and media personality was hospitalized on August 4 due to severe self-harm and his unstable mental state. Hilton claimed to be a Christian afterward, but some things don't add up. Allie discusses the question of whether or not a believer can be possessed by a demon and if what Perez Hilton is experiencing is demonic possession or the result of living in sin. Allie also looks at Ariana Grande's new music video “Petal,” examining the glorification of gore and her sickly state. Both Hilton and Grande exemplify what life without Christ looks like and show that true healing can only be found in him. Allie also talks about Jackie Oshry, co-host of the podcast “The Toast,” who made her appearance on second lady Usha Vance's podcast promoting her new children's book, despite receiving a lot of backlash. Conversely, Nara Smith disowned her "tradwife" persona that made her who she is during an appearance on “Call Her Daddy.” Allie also answers a voicemail asking about first-time obedience. Do you have a question for Allie? Leave a voicemail at 844-755-5252. Share the Arrows 2026 is on October 10 in Dallas, Texas! Send in your music story!Somebody gets “killed off” by food poisoning, Florida delivers a hit and run story before breakfast, and then we do what we always do: turn the chaos into a music debate you can't stop listening to. While Chris is out, we run Round Two of our music bracket with the kind of honesty that makes brackets dangerous, because once you say a pick out loud you have to live with it.We dig into Ariana Grande's new album Petal and argue about what happens when production goes bold and psychedelic while the vocal choices stay safe. We talk about 70s coded pop, disco textures, and why an album can feel seamless yet still leave you unable to tell one song from another. We also touch on public scrutiny, celebrity image shifts, and why stepping back from appearances can feel like boundary setting or like a dramatic “end of an era” depending on who's listening. Then we jump back into pure bracket mode: hip hop matchups like Eminem vs Kendrick Lamar, Outkast vs Jay Z, and the moral and musical tension of ranking Kanye West's influence while refusing to endorse his behavior. Modern pop brings the heat with Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, and Harry Styles, and pop icons force the big questions about legacy with Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, and more. We cap it all with a country finale powered by one undeniable truth: Friends In Low Places is basically a communal ritual.Hit play, pick a side, and then subscribe, share the episode, and leave a review so more music nerds can jump into the bracket with us.Support the showPlease give us a quick rate and review.

Ariana Grande has announced that she's planning to take a break from the public eye after her Eternal Sunshine tour ends in September. She started her performing career when she was a kid and has since become one of the biggest pop stars in the world, winning three Grammys and most recently portraying Glinda in the hit film Wicked. But over the past couple of years, a lot of the conversation online about Ariana hasn't been about her music or acting: it's been about her appearance. That's despite her asking people repeatedly not to comment on her body over the years. Her most recent music video, Petal, went viral after some fans said they were concerned about how thin she was. So, is it ever ok to talk about a celebrity's health or appearance? And where's the line between concern and scrutiny?Chelsea Coates from the What in the World team joins us to discuss it all - and we hear how Ariana's fans are reacting to her decision to take a break.Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk WhatsApp: +44 330 12 33 22 6 Presenter: Hannah Gelbart Producer: Emily Horler and Chelsea Coates Editor: Verity WildeIf you are concerned about your health, you could speak to a health professional. Without even mentioning it by name, BTS sparked a major debate about the new best Asian pop music performance category at the 2027 Grammys with their bombshell decision last week not to submit music from their latest album, ARIRANG, at next year's awards show. The 33-year-old star has announced that she is taking a break from public life due to “endless scrutiny”. In recent years her weight and health have been the subject of much speculation and concern.Grande has endured a series of traumatic events. In 2017 a suicide bomber killed 22 people at her Manchester Arena show, and in 2018 her musical collaborator and ex-boyfriend Mac Miller died of an accidental overdose. Her latest music video Petal - in which she takes a chainsaw to her critics - sparked controversy as she looks visibly underweight. But what's the balance between ghoulish voyeurism and concern? And does she have a responsibility to her young impressionable fans? The Correspondent by Virginia Evans In her letters to family and friends we come to know the life of Sybil Van Antwerp: stubborn, cantankerous, opinionated, always steadfast in her belief in the power of the written word. But as the clock begins to tick for Sybil, the need for a few post-scripts to the life she's led becomes apparent. Fixing her difficult relationship with her children. Taking a final chance at romance. Atoning for an old legal case which has come back to haunt her. And finally, reckoning with a devastating loss that she has spent the last thirty years holding close to her chest. Daughters of the Sun and Moon by Lisa See In 1870, three Chinese women arrive in the small, dusty, and violent pueblo of Los Angeles. Dove, the bound-footed daughter of an imperial scholar, is entrancing and innocent, poised to fulfill her role as a daughter with an arranged marriage to a much older merchant. Petal, the big-footed daughter of peasants, is arriving on the shores of Gold Mountain—America—after being sold into servitude by her parents. And Moon, married to a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, is educated and beautiful, yet her failed foot binding as a child has left her with a limp that lessens her value in the eyes of many. Each woman has her own desires. Dove wants to love and be loved, Petal desires freedom, and Moon seeks justice. Together they face a ruthless society, devoid of goodwill and increasingly hostile to all three women, despite their different backgrounds. Set during a period of rampant anti-Chinese sentiment in Los Angeles, Daughters of the Sun and Moon is a gripping tale of an exhilarating but tumultuous society in a fever pitch, and three women who must navigate its unique challenges. In the wake of the real-life Night of Horrors, a long-forgotten, bloody episode of American history, Dove, Petal, and Moon are brought together by hardship and heartbreak, and they must use their bravery, endurance, and ability to “eat bitterness” to discover their voices, find freedom, and connect through solace and friendship. Together they are daughters of the sun and moon. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Owner Maggie Fischer transformed the once-deteriorating historic home into one of the Lehigh Valley's most unique places to stay, gather, create, and celebrate. Inside, the house is filled with restored woodwork, leaded glass, salvaged antiques, vintage furniture, local history, and surprises in nearly every room. One of the biggest surprises came during the renovation, when crates marked “high explosives” were found in the basement. What first looked like old storage turned out to be very real, very old TNT. Maggie shares the story behind The Painted Petal's renovation, the home's history, the antiques and artifacts that found their way back, the challenges of restoring a historic property, and why preservation matters in the Lehigh Valley. Lisa See joins Carol Fitzgerald to discuss her new novel, DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. This time, Lisa explores the idea of female friendship as told by three different Chinese women — Moon, Dove and Petal — who were inspired by real people. The book is rooted in the 1871 Chinese Massacre in Los Angeles, which has been largely erased from public memory and not taught in history classes. Lisa first explored the massacre over 30 years ago while researching ON GOLD MOUNTAIN, where it appeared in a single paragraph. She was later invited by the mayor to serve on an advisory board for a memorial commemorating what became known as the "Night of Horrors." The novel grew from both deep personal family history and a sense of compulsion to recover a deliberately suppressed historical event.
