Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, warum bestimmte Titel trotz Interesse nicht auf den Tisch kamen und was sich nach den ersten Partien daran bestätigt oder verändert hat. Als gemeinsamer Rahmen dient ein spielerisches Vorgehen: Zu Beginn wählt jede Person eine Kategorie, die das mitgebrachte Spiel besonders beschreibt, und die anderen versuchen im Gespräch zu erraten, um welchen Titel es geht.Sven eröffnet die Runde mit „Dungeon Up“, einem Print-and-Play-Kartenspiel, das er vor mehr als zwei Jahren über Kickstarter unterstützt hat. Thema ist dabei auch der praktische Teil: Karten müssen zunächst selbst produziert werden, bevor es überhaupt losgehen kann. Inhaltlich dreht sich das Spiel um einen Helden, der sich durch einen Dungeon arbeitet, gegen Monster antritt und versucht, den Ausgang zu erreichen. Aufbau und Mechanismen werden Schritt für Schritt skizziert, sodass nachvollziehbar wird, wie das Kartenspiel seine Spannung aus dem Kampf gegen Gegner und dem Fortschritt im Dungeon bezieht.Steffen bringt „Hamlet“ mit, das bei ihm ebenfalls länger ungespielt blieb. Im Gespräch geht es darum, wie das Dorf im Spielverlauf organisch wächst und warum dabei Logistik und Planung eine zentrale Rolle einnehmen. Neben dem System aus Wegen, Gebäuden und Versorgungsketten werden auch die Produktion und das visuelle Detailniveau angesprochen – ebenso wie die Frage, wie stark sich Mitspielende gegenseitig beeinflussen, wenn das Dorf größer wird und Abläufe ineinandergreifen.Torben ergänzt die Auswahl mit „Forgotten Waters“, einem semi-kooperativen Abenteuerspiel mit Piraten-Thema. Hier steht der Spagat zwischen gemeinsamer Reise und individuellen Zielen im Fokus: Alle arbeiten am Fortschritt der Geschichte, verfolgen aber zugleich persönliche Vorgaben. Thematisiert werden außerdem die App-Unterstützung und die Art, wie Interaktion am Tisch entsteht – gerade dann, wenn Entscheidungen nicht nur den eigenen Charakter, sondern die gesamte Crew betreffen.Im weiteren Verlauf streift die Folge auch Wettspiele und die Dynamik, die dadurch in großen Runden entstehen kann. „Ready, Set, Bet“ kommt als Beispiel dafür auf den Tisch: Live-Wetten, schnelle Entscheidungen und der ständige Blick auf den Rennverlauf sorgen dafür, dass sich Partien stark über die Gruppe definieren. Die Runde ordnet ein, warum solche Spiele besonders dann funktionieren, wenn viele Personen am Tisch sitzen und die Entscheidungen im Takt des Spiels fallen müssen.So entsteht eine Folge, die nicht nur Titel vorstellt, sondern vor allem den Austausch darüber in den Vordergrund rückt, weshalb Spiele liegen bleiben – und was passiert, wenn sie dann doch endlich gespielt werden.

US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Magid joins us from the Doha Forum, an annual gathering bringing together government officials, policymakers, civil society representatives and business leaders from around the world to discuss major global challenges. Qatar’s Prime Minister said yesterday that Doha does not consider the current situation in Gaza to be a ceasefire, arguing that this would require an Israeli withdrawal from the entirety of the enclave. At the same time, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called for deploying the International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gaza “as soon as possible,” claiming that Israel is using the absence of international monitors on the ground in Gaza to violate the ceasefire on a daily basis. We hear additional statements critical of Israel and discuss their significance, even as the Trump administration appears to announce that Phase 2 of the Gaza ceasefire will commence in the coming weeks. Also yesterday at the Doha Forum, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa accused Israel of “exporting crises” to other countries around the region to distract from its “horrifying massacres” in Gaza. We learn how those at the forum consider that the Syrian president, once denounced as a terrorist, is a legitimate actor in the region, whereas Israel is not. Piling on to the criticism against Israel at the forum, also yesterday, a senior Saudi diplomat said that while there is much focus in the international community on the need for the Palestinian Authority to engage in a comprehensive reform process, a reform of the Israeli government is what is most needed for peace in the region. Magid puts this new Saudi statement in the context of what we also learned yesterday: that the US and Saudi Arabia had reached understandings on the eve of Hamas’s October 7 attack regarding the concessions Israel would have to make vis-à-vis the Palestinians for Riyadh to normalize relations with Jerusalem.
