Alien: Earth director/DP Dana Gonzales reimagines a classic

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 324: Producer, Director, DP Dana Gonzales, ASC Dana Gonzales, ASC is a producer, director, and cinematographer known for his collaborations with visionary showrunner Noah Hawley on projects like Fargo and Legion. Dana has once again partnered with Hawley to bring the iconic sci-fi horror franchise to television with FX's Alien: Earth. Dana shares insights on his creative process, the challenges of honoring a cinematic legacy, his career path and the future of the industry. For Dana and Hawley, tackling the Alien universe was a formidable task. “You're taking on some strong material,” Dana explains. “The reason we're reimagining it is because it is so popular and loved and people want to see more.” The goal wasn't just to produce a new chapter, but to recreate the visceral feeling of the original. The team deliberately leaned into the aesthetic of the first two films, going so far as to create near-exact replicas of the original Alien spaceship Nostromo's sets for the new Maginot spacecraft. While the Xenomorph has become a familiar alien over nine films, Alien: Earth adds five new and dangerous creatures. The Xenomorph has its own story arc and development throughout the show. The new, eight-hour narrative format allows for a deeper exploration of the story and characters. “Not everyone has seen Alien that's seeing Alien: Earth,” Dana notes. The goal is to to tell a story that works for both new and existing fans. "As we go down the road, things will be different, we'll make different choices,” he adds. “But the key is to try to honor the original work. I feel like the audience depends on it. Episode 1 should feel like episode 8.” Dana and Hawley's deep respect for the source material extends to their technical approach. They wanted to capture the original film's sense of existential dread, a feeling heightened by the decision to have the ship crash on Earth. This plot point dictated Dana's plan for the camera work, with little coverage and long takes. They frequently stayed in a two-shot to maintain intimacy and tension. To further evoke the feel of the original, Alien: Earth was shot in 2.3:5 anamorphic, a first for the FX network. Hawley directed episodes one and five, with Dana serving as cinematographer to establish the look of the show. Dana stepped into the director's chair for episodes two, three, seven, and eight. “We can have honest conversations about what we want to do with these episodes,” Dana says. "We have a similar aesthetic.” Dana is also an executive producer on their joint projects, acting as a “creative executive producer” on set. In this role, he preps each episode, serves as the on-set decision-maker and manages second unit photography, ensuring the overall creative vision is maintained. The trust between Dana and Hawley is a fundamental part of their collaboration. They begin by building the world, finding images and discussing the story arc. This partnership, which began on Fargo, has evolved into a creative shorthand. “Noah is the creator, he knows what he wants to do,” Dana shares. “Our shorthand, we get to what the shows will look like and feel like in a very organic way in a few conversations.” Hawley's support allows Dana to push creative boundaries. “One of the most attractive things about this collaboration is that he's got my back and I could push things creatively,” he says. “I try things, I throw it out there, I do whatever. And I think he comes to expect that and likes that.” Dana first moved from cinematographer to director on the show Pretty Little Liars. As a cinematographer, he had strong ideas about camera placement and perspective, which he felt were central to storytelling. On directing, he advises, “You have to do the first one and you have to make mistakes.” Dana believes that a background as an episodic DP provides a unique advantage for directing. “As an episodic DP, you already understand working with different people,

Chris Paul and Burning Bright take on M. Night Shyamalan's Split, unpacking its psychological horror and deeper symbolic layers. They highlight James McAvoy's performance as Kevin Wendell Crumb and his 23 personalities, drawing parallels to narrative warfare and how media offers different “alters” of the same central message. The hosts dive into the good twin/evil twin dynamic, centralization versus decentralization, and how propaganda thrives on consensus while truth does not. Their discussion branches into Trump's communication style, trauma as both a weapon and a source of resilience, and how cultural manipulation echoes MK Ultra–style conditioning. They also examine connections to modern gender debates, linking the “they/them” identity to collectivism versus sovereignty, and the biblical concept of Legion as hive-minded evil. Closing thoughts tie Casey's survival, rooted in her scars and trauma, to humanity's antifragility and the danger of weaponized victimhood. This episode blends film critique, philosophy, and cultural analysis, showing how Split serves as a metaphor for narrative control, sovereignty, and the battle between good and evil.

Strap in as Tara Erickson, Coy Jandreau, & Aaron Alexander unpack Alien: Earth Season 1, Episode 6 — titled “The Fly” — from FX and Apple TV+. Created by Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this sci-fi horror reboot plunges deeper into its grotesque and enthralling mythology. This episode layers bone-chilling body horror on top of corporate sabotage and existential dread. The crew of the USCSS Maginot faces off against deadly parasites, including facehuggers and blood-draining ticks, culminating in the debut of the most unsettling threat yet: the Eye—a parasite that invades eyeballs, takes over its host's body, and twists horror into art. As sabotage compounds the carnage and survival becomes secondary, cyborg security chief Morrow (Babou Ceesay) is pushed to his breaking point. The episode leans hard into its grim tone, with dark humor lurking in every quietly horrifying moment. We dive into the standout visuals, what the Eye means for the Hybrid characters, and how “The Fly” raises the stakes both narratively and emotionally. Whether you're here for the grotesque thrills, mythology-heavy revelations, or merciless suspense, this breakdown has something for every Alien fan. On this episode of Bingeworthy, host Mike DeAngelo is joined by writer, director, and showrunner Noah Hawley ("Fargo," "Legion") to discuss his new FX series, "Alien: Earth." The highly anticipated prequel series debuted August 12th and runs through September 23rd, delivering a bold new chapter in the iconic sci-fi horror franchise. Set in a future Earth, the story follows a young woman and a band of tactical hybrid misfits who uncover a terrifying secret after a mysterious spacecraft crash-lands in their corporate territory, forcing them into direct conflict with everyone's favorite killer, acid-blooded alien species and much more. The series stars Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, and Timothy Olyphant.READ MORE: ‘Alien: Earth' Review: Noah Hawley Matches Ridley Scott's Classic In A Terrifically Smart, Engaging & Terrifying Sci-Fi Horror SeriesThe show takes place only two years prior to the events of "Alien," and Hawley made doubly sure his series felt instantly familiar to fans of the original. “People have to watch it in the first five minutes and go, this is Alien,” Hawley said. That meant using the actual Nostromo blueprints to design the Maginot ship and opening the series just like Scott's 1979 film—with the crew waking up, smoking, eating, and overlapping their conversations. “It has to feel authentic,” Hawley stressed.

Speaking of pride, here one: "We got the most powerful military in the world," sounds familiar, hmm, remember God can humble anybody or any nation! Let's not get hung up in our pride God can allow the smallest military to defeat us, anytime any day. "When Jesus Christ came to the country of the Gadarenes, and when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs, a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, And the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broke in pieces: neither could any man tame him.And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshiped him, and cried with a loud voice, and said, what have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou tormented me not. For he said unto him, come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, what is your name? And he answered, saying, my name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountain a great herd of swine feeding.Contact: heavensprayerlink.com, we love to pray with you, God bless you.

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon5 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. 7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. 14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?' ” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” 35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. If an episode has ever gone completely off the rails of intended subject matter, this is the one.  The Guys had a topic, but before they even got to Geeks of the Week, the subject had changed and the original topic forgotten.   Those sorts of things happen when a body consumes all the flavors of Bartles and Jaymes wine coolers at once, or puts away a six pack of Zimas.  Or in this case, when The Guys start conversing.  Bartles and Jaymes coolers don't seem to be available in their zip code, and even Japan quit selling Zima a few years ago.  But somehow, the hosts jumped on the nostalgia bus for drinks (or the advertisements for such) that they were likely too young to consume when they could actually be found at the county line.   Geeks of the Week include yet another upcoming movie updating an 80's TV show, a Happy Tarzan Day greeting to aaaa-ahahah-aaa-lll who celebrate, and a podcast record set by none other than the future Mrs. Travis Kelce.  Jay closes out the League of Regrettable Superheroes segment, but not to worry - the Legion of Regrettable Supervillains is coming!  We thank you for your support.

Monday, 1 September 2025   Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.” Matthew 12:45   “Then it traverses, and it takes with itself seven other spirits, itself eviler, and having entered, it dwells there. And the last of that man, it becomes worse than the first. Thus it will be also – this evil generation” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus spoke of the unclean spirit returning to the house it departed and finding it holidaying, swept and arranged. He continues now with, “Then it traverses, and it takes with itself seven other spirits.”   The spirit, realizing it had a good thing going, and seeing that there is plenty of new room available for even more uncleanness, goes out seeking friends to join in with possessing the man once again.   The number seven, hepta, is introduced here.    The number seven is the number of spiritual perfection. In this case, even though the spirits are unclean, there is a fullness implied in using the number. It stresses the potency and the immensely malignant nature of the event. This is stressed by the words, “itself eviler.”   There is an amalgamation of evil that will exude from this newly infested person. This is certain because even one unclean spirit will manifest itself in evil. With seven more, Jesus says, “and having entered, it dwells there.”   The verb translated as “it dwells” is singular. Despite being many, they align as one in purpose. It is similar to the account of the demon Legion in Mark 5 and Luke 8:30, where the verbs are singular when referring to many demons. With such a force now inhabiting this restored home, Jesus says, “And the last of that man, it becomes worse than the first.”   This is the certain result of the matter. The man had an evil situation in his life. He had it supposedly taken care of, and yet, he wound up being worse off than at the first because he failed to obtain a complete correction to his state. Jesus next clearly states the subject to which He is referring, saying, “Thus it will be also – this evil generation.”   In verse 12:39, the scribes and Pharisees asked for a sign. Jesus next called them “evil and adulteress,” explaining that it would not be given a sign except that of the prophet Jonah. Had He given them a sign, they would have exclaimed like the people did concerning Simon the Sorcerer in Acts 8 –   “But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, 10 to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, ‘This man is the great power of God.'” Acts 8:9, 10   The people didn't actually care about Simon. They just wanted to be amused by his tricks. If someone came along, like David Copperfield, they would have left Simon and gone after David. They were looking for a quick cure to their insatiable desire to be delighted with surprise.   Jesus knew this was their heart attitude, and so He refused to give them a sign, telling them instead that their sign would come from Scripture itself. He told them why in John –   “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” John 5:46, 47   The sign would be wowed over until someone came and did something new and exciting. Without accepting the word, which was the basis of life and conduct for Israel, they would never truly accept and believe Jesus.   Life application: This set of verses contains a truth that extends beyond just the immediate context of the parable. What Jesus says will prove true in a great number of situations. Take an alcoholic, for example.   A person who has an alcohol addiction can be equated to a person with an unclean spirit, and indeed it is so. He knows he has a problem and strives to overcome it. Eventually, he prevails. The demon of addiction departs. Relieved, the man sweeps out his house, arranges it nicely, and says, “Self, you done well.”   However, he never takes the time to fill this empty house with Jesus. Eventually, when some trial, temptation, or situation arises where he finds himself in a weakened state, he succumbs to drinking again.   However, it is normally the case that the reacquired addiction will manifest itself in worse ways than before. He may take up drugs, get lost in pornography, etc. Eventually, he is bound to lose his home, job, and family. In the end, he is in a much worse state than he ever imagined because He failed to heed his wife's advice to come to church and seek the Lord.   This parable is an excellent one to use when talking to someone about the addiction he is facing. Cheer him on! Tell him to persevere! Offer to be there and assist in any way you can. But be sure to tell him that his void needs to be filled with his Creator's love found in Christ. Without that, things will not go well.   Personal note: I have spent a lot of time dealing with people whose lives were fraught with addiction. Having told many of them what to do when they get clean, far too many of them failed to do so. Most eventually went back to their old addiction, with more problems heaped on their lives. Several have died, leaving loved ones behind. Be careful to ensure you and those you minister to are filled with Jesus.   Heavenly Father, help us to have our priorities right in life. There are many things we can do that may distract us from healthy living. We can get addicted to the internet as quickly as we get addicted to drugs. Help us to instead focus on Jesus and have a proper balance in all other things. Yes, help us in this, O God. Amen.

In this special crossover episode of Men of Steel, we kick off a two-part team-up with the Long Live the Legion podcast! We're diving into “Foundations,” the early 2000s arc from The Legion—with special guests Jim and Jay from LLtL and the artist of the arc himself, Chris Batista! Together, we explore Superman's legacy in the 31st century, the evolving identity of the Legion, and what it was like illustrating this future-forward storyline. Part 2 continues on Long Live the Legion—don't miss it! Overview Case Aiken introduces crossover episode, featuring Jmike Folson, Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and Chris Batista discussing the Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, celebrating its 45th anniversary. The plot centers on Darkseid snatching people from time to harness dark matter, with the Legion uncovering Superboy during the investigation. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the core writing team; their earlier success with Marvel's cosmic stories enhances credibility. Chris Batista expresses concern over technology portrayal, advocating for a more advanced depiction of the Legion compared to Justice League. The Legion World headquarters is praised for its futuristic elements like replicated home worlds and teleportation gates. Despite rising sales and positive fan response, the series faced cancellation, causing frustration as issue 25 became the second-best selling of the series with a 25% readership increase. Character designs for the Servants of Darkness were mostly created by Chris Batista, with a conscious effort to maintain Kirby's aesthetic. Superboy's dual role as both Legion member and connection to Titans was anticipated, reflecting long-time fan expectations for character involvement. Kid Quantum is recognized as the first female leader of color in the Legion, showcasing character dynamics and development alongside Cosmic Boy. The evolution of Superboy's design aimed to match Teen Titans appearances, highlighting editorial influence on character aesthetics.   Notes ️ Podcast Introduction and Setup (00:00 - 02:09) Case Aiken introduces the Men of Steel podcast crossover episode with Long Live the Legion podcast, featuring co-host Jmike Folson and guests Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and artist Chris Batista. Discussion focuses on Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, specifically issue 25 which serves as both story continuation and 45th anniversary celebration. Chris Batista reveals behind-the-scenes details about working as lead artist on the arc, noting DC doesn't produce this Legion continuity anymore so he can speak freely. Story Overview and Context (02:09 - 09:54) Jmike Folson summarizes the Foundations plot: people being snatched from time by Darkseid to steal dark matter for restarting Apokolips, with Legion discovering Superboy during investigation of warp phantoms. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the writing team, with connections drawn to their later successful Marvel cosmic work including Guardians of the Galaxy. Legion Lost miniseries and Legion Worlds established crucial backstory, with 25 issues of world-building leading to this commemorative arc. ️ Technology and World-Building Discussion (09:54 - 16:05) Chris Batista expresses frustration with Paul Levitz rejecting advanced technology concepts for Legion, arguing they should appear far more advanced than Justice League. Legion World headquarters praised as major advancement - a planet with replicated home worlds and teleportation gates, making Legion feel appropriately futuristic. Discussion of how DNA run embraced technological advancement while previous runs kept Legion at similar tech level to 20th century heroes. Character Design and Development (01:01:03 - 01:24:10) Chris reveals Servants of Darkness designs were largely his creation except for Orion, with specific mentions of including Firestorm, White Martian, Lobo, Green Lantern, and Big Barda. Orion design intentionally modeled after Destroyer from Thor, maintaining Kirby aesthetic while creating intimidating servant appearance. Invisible Kid and Brainiac 5 romantic moment revealed as editor Steve Wacker's spontaneous addition 'just to mess with fans' - became lasting fan discussion point. Publishing History and Cancellation (01:24:16 - 01:59:06) Series cancellation explained as sudden higher-up decision despite rising sales and positive fan response to Superboy addition. Issue 25 was second-best selling of entire series with 25% increase in readership, making cancellation timing particularly frustrating. Original plans included Superboy remaining in both Legion and Titans simultaneously, with extensive story arcs planned for Element Lad return and Lightning Lad separation. Artist Collaboration and Creative Process (20:40 - 01:19:06) Chris describes working relationship with DNA as collaborative, with writers trusting him to design new characters like Legion cadets and including Easter eggs like Kent Shakespeare and Polar Boy. Multiple pencillers used for issue 25 to handle commemorative scope, with each artist assigned specific character groups to avoid overlap. Coloring technology evolution discussed, with modern computer coloring providing more tools but potentially reducing creative necessity of older 64-color process limitations. ⏳ Superman Connection and Time Travel Elements (34:02 - 01:54:06) Clark Kent and 90s Superboy both featured as characters pulled from time, with Clark becoming servant of darkness while Superboy joins Legion. Superboy wears classic costume with Legion belt buckle addition, fulfilling long-time fan expectations while serving story purposes. Time dilation plot involves universe getting smaller and past being erased, though hosts acknowledge the temporal mechanics don't fully make sense. Character Relationships and Dynamics (46:03 - 01:30:24) Mech (Lightning Lord) rehabilitation storyline discussed as more complex than typical villain treatment, showing struggle between evil nature and love for siblings. Kid Quantum established as Legion's first female leader of color, with organic romantic relationship with Cosmic Boy developing throughout arc. Livewire/Element Lad fusion creates extremely powerful character combining lightning abilities with matter transmutation in crystalline body. Technical and Production Details (01:36:23 - 01:51:38) Secret Files issue placement in continuity questioned due to timeline inconsistencies with main story events. Chris notes Superboy's physical design evolution throughout arc as editorial mandated size increases to match Teen Titans appearance. Force field technology and advanced Legion equipment discussed as properly futuristic elements that should distinguish team from contemporary heroes.

Dive into the dystopian depths of Alien: Earth, the audacious FX/Hulu sci-fi horror series from Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), set in 2120—two years before the events of the original Alien film. This world-blending prequel explores a fragmented society ruled by ruthless corporations through the lens of hybrid beings with human consciousness and synthetic bodies.
