Thomas Adès is one of the UK's foremost and most successful composers. His first opera, Powder Her Face, was premiered in 1995, when he was just 24. With its racy subject matter, based on the life of the Duchess of Argyll, it put him squarely on the musical map, winning widespread critical acclaim. His catalogue now includes almost 90 works, with commissions from the world's leading orchestras and festivals, two further operas, The Tempest and The Exterminating Angel, and an epic ballet score for Wayne McGregor, Dante, based on the Divine Comedy. To anticipate the UK premiere of his new work, Aquifer, at the 2024 BBC Proms, Thomas Adès talks to Michael Berkeley about his musical inspirations and passions, including works by Schubert, Chopin, Walton, Stravinsky, Berg and Harrison Birtwistle.Producer Graham Rogers

Our Alternate Oscars episodes, based on Danny Peary's fantastic 1992 book of the same name, have always been among our most popular. Over the course of the podcast, we've covered the 1930's, 1950's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and the 2000's. Comparing what films actually won Best Picture to what we believe should have won is always a fun challenge, and it has given us a chance over the years to open or reopen some doors for our listeners to movies that are overlooked and forgotten. When we came to the 1950's episode, in an (eerily prophetic) split decision, we chose to include only English-language works, since the sheer volume of brilliant films from around the world in that decade would overwhelm both us and you, dear listeners. As we approached the 1960's for this episode, however, we reasoned that the relative lack of great American films from the decade suggested that this time around, we should open our tent to the entire world. We could not stand idly by, for instance while "A Man for All Seasons", lovely though it is, walked away with Best Picture in the year of films like "Persona", "Masculin/Feminin" and "Blow-Up". Our worries about the length of the episode, however, turned out to be justified and then some; therefore, we needed to split the episode into two parts. So with that, we are thrilled to present our first episode(s) since our triumphant, celebratory live recording of Episode 50 in March: thus Episodes 51A (1960-1964) and 51B (1965-1969), Alternate Oscars: The 1960's Edition. There were a couple of things that really hit us as we were creating this entry in the Vintage Sand catalogue. The first is that an unexpectedly high number of our choices were, in fact, American films, suggesting that while common wisdom avers that Hollywood suffered a creative decline in the 60's, there were a lot of great things happening just below the surface that were, unwittingly perhaps, paving the way for the revolution of the American New Wave that would come in the early 1970's. And the deeper we dove into the cinema of the 60's, we came to really understand the fundamental difference between those works and film today. Simply put, it was a time when directors really seemed to trust their audience's intelligence and imagination. This is most obvious in structurally elliptical puzzle films like Resnais' "Last Year at Marienbad", Buñuel's "The Exterminating Angel", Antonioni's "L'Avventura" and "Blow-Up", Bergman's "Persona" and even Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey". But in ways big and small, and in terms both of performance and filmmaking technique, there is in 60's film a refreshing absence of rat-on-the-balcony-rail-at-the-end-of-"Departed" heavy-handedness that seems to be a common thread in the work of even our greatest directors today. So with all this in mind, strap in and join us for our odyssey through 60's cinema. It promises to be highly irregular, Dave…

Luis Buñuel was a master at creating lasting images that stay in the viewers brain long after the film is over. He had a career that spanned multiple decades and working in multiple countries, yet he consistantly took aim at political and social elites.  In his 1962 masterpiece, The Exterminating Angel, the acclaimed filmmaker crafts an allegorical comedy that confronts the socio-political realities of Franco's Spain. Infused with a surrealistic touch and a substantial dose of satire, the film allows for a multi-layered interpretation. Plus, it's just plain funny to watch the rich fall apart and destroy themselves.  Follow us at: Patreon / Twitter / Instagram / Letterboxd / Facebook

What do you think will happen? EL ESQUELETO DE LA SEÑORA MORALES/ THE SKELETON OF MRS MORALES (Rogelio A. Gonzalez. Mexico, 1960) was voted 19th in a list of the top 100 films in the history of Mexican cinema and currently on MUBI as part of the ‘Spectacle Every Day: The Many Seasons of Mexican Cinema'. Based on a short story by Arthur Machen, ‘The Islington Mystery, the film stars Arturo de Córdova, Amparo Rivelles and Elda Peralta and is written by Luis Alcoriza, who that year also wrote Buñuel's THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL'. In the podcast we discuss all of this plus the film's visuals, pacing, tone, whether it's macabre rather than Surrealist…and more. Our favourite in the series thus far. Rogelio A. González is a director we'd never heard of. This film makes us want to see more of his work.

Kathrine Barnes Co-Stars in the New BET+ Series, 'Average Joe', which premiered last night following the BET Awards. The BET Awards aired on almost every single Paramount Global owned cable station, including Nickelodeon, which was quite confusing, but what wasn't confusing is that Barnes had such an impact on the BET executives that her character was extended to 7 or the 10 episodes during the first season. Barnes has been seen on such TV shows like, 'Queer As Folk', 'Candy' and the Sundance film, 'The Glorias', as well as, 'Moonshot: Faceless After Dark and Walden.' She has also appeared on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, Christmas Special, 'Adult Swim Yule Log.' A mega Julie Andrews fan, Barnes was only slightly impressed that I knew of Andrews' film, 'SOB', which shed her Mary Poppins image in the early 1980s. However, she did talk about her architect sister and where she would throw a, "Don't you know who I am?" celebrity style tantrum once she is more readily recognized.  Barnes is also a Co-founder & Producing Partner at Vernal & Sere Theatre, she recently partnered with the Luis Buñuel Film Institute to mount the world-premiere stage adaptation of Buñuel's 1962 surrealist masterpiece, The Exterminating Angel, in which she played Silvia, the Duchess of Avila. In the series 'Average Joe',Barnes co-stars with leading man, Deon Cole, Tammy Townsend, Cynthia McWilliams, Malcolm Barrett and many others. Kathrine plays the recurring role (7-8 episodes out of 10) of 'Arina' which is nicknamed, "The Chameleon," a former KGB assassin and enforcer for the Russian mob who is dragged out of retirement and back into the world of fighting for her life in Pasha Lychnikoff's world. 'Average Joe', which premiered on BET's new streaming service BET+ last night following the BET Awards. 'Average Joe' will stream once a week for the next 10 weeks on Sunday nights. https://notesonfilm1.com/2023/02/11/thinking-aloud-about-film-el-castillo-de-la-pureza-castle-of-purity-arturo-ripstein-mexico-1972/ I've been wanting to see Arturo Ripstein films for decades and never had the opportunity. Now MUBI is showing five of his films and, on the basis of El Castillo de la pureza/ The Castle of Purity, I plan to see them all. The film is based on a real story – not unlike that of the Wests or Joseph Fritzl – of a man who keeps his family locked in the house to protect them from the perversions of the world even as he – the only one allowed outside – indulges in every perversion the outside world allows him. When he comes home – the family, who've been working all day manufacturing the poison that is their living – gets all his self-hatred projected onto them, keeping them off-balance and under his thumb. The shadow of Buñuel overhangs this film – Ripstein had been his assistant on The Exterminating Angel, which bears some resemblance to this film, and Claudio Brook (Simon of the Desert) and Rita Macedo (The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz) – the stars – also performed for Buñuel. A beautifully designed film, with a textured creepiness that envelops the family, one that is not just due to rain and shadows that seep right into the home (the outside world is always sunny and bright) but a moral murkiness, a perversion that is the result of that imperious patriarchal insistence on ‘purity'. A marvellous film. We discussed all the above and more in the podcast.

They spotlight three memorable periods of his long career: his surrealist origins in Paris, his filmmaking in Mexico, and his great late career run of films produced in France. These eras of Buñuel's career are examined through six films: UN CHIEN ANDALOU (1929), Buñuel and Salvador Dali's surrealist experimental short, VIRIDIANA (1961), the acclaimed Palme d'Or winning critique of religous charity, THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL (1962), an absurd satire of aristocratic norms, THE MILKY WAY (1969), a spiritual road film questioning the significance of religious virtues, THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE (1972), a film about an illogical dinner party that turns catastrophic, and THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY (1974), a film arranged by dream-logic that passes through episodes of history. Please consider supporting this show through our Patreon!Keep up with us on Instagram and Twitter: @filmchatterpod.Check out the films mentioned in this episode on our Letterboxd. Thanks for tuning in!Powered and distributed by Simplecast

I believe The Exterminating Angel is our fourth encounter with one in one of the man's films, and it may be one of my favorites, though they are all amazing in their own right. This week Criterion also provides us with some bonus biographical material on Buñuel that includes a story about ruining a Christmas dinner at Charlie Chaplins house and calling it "praxis". This week is also the first of a one-two punch of Buñuel's final Mexican films. While this week focuses on the aristocracy (and a little on religion), next week swings hard at organized Christianity and I can't wait to share that episode with you as well.

How do music, plot, staging, action, dance and performance combine to produce meaning for an opera audience? Taking a close look at Thomas Adès's The Tempest, Professor Edward Venn of the University of Leeds and choreographer and director Aletta Collins – who choreographed the opera's premiere in 2004 – explore the conversation between different elements in opera. They also consider the notions of confinement and restricted movement in all three of Adès's operas: The Tempest, Powder Her Face (1995), and The Exterminating Angel (2016), which take on a new significance in the COVID-era. Until July 15, 2021, you can grab free copy of Apartment by filling out this survey on enhanced ebooks to help me out with some academic research. --- In which I introduce my eerie suspense novella, Apartment, again, after a long hiatus. It's scheduled to launch in 2021, so keep an eye out for more info! Leave me your comments, thoughts, and Qs at my blog, my Twitter, my IG, or my Tumblr. TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: "...So, essentially the story started out as pure suspense. That's all I wanted with this book - a deep, suffocating, lingering feeling of suspense that never quite gets satisfied. As I worked on it more and more, I realized that I could do much more with a book like this, and I took a very literary route. I added layers upon layers to this book, with message after message and theme after theme, and sprinkled it with symbolism galore. There's a lot of peel back with this book, and if you read the book at face-value without really taking the time to mull it over and dig a little deeper, you might find it a completely absurd read - which, to be fair, it is! The story's main genres are suspense, magical realism, and psychological drama. There's some surrealism in there, but I place that in magical realism. If you don't know what magical realism is, you might be interested in checking out the works of Gabrial Garcia Marquez - I strongly recommend Chronicle of a Death Foretold, which does lend some inspiration to some parts of this book - and to those of Haruki Murakami - especially his book, After Dark, which also inspired me greatly as I wrote this book. Magical realism, to put it briefly, is when magical or extraordinary things happen in books but they're treated as normal happenings. For example, a painting could start talking to a character, and the book would never mention how strange that was, or treat it as anything out of the ordinary at all! It's a really interesting story mechanic, and I had a lot of fun working with it in Apartment. The book also pays homage to a lot of other works - including Chronicle of a Death Foretold and After Dark. For example, it gives a nod to The Exterminating Angel, a film by Luis Bunuel that makes use of a particularly surrealist form of huis clos. As for psychological drama, this is where the book can get a bit suffocating. It throws you right into the deep end with its narration, telling the story from the perspectives of each of the three main characters - and their minds are not always the best places to be! It also takes the perspectives of a few other characters throughout the story, and in some places takes on a mysterious perspective that seems to be that of the narrator, or perhaps the apartment building itself. Sometimes, the narration and internal thought processes of the characters almost bleed together, making it difficult to identify what is being shared by who, exactly...." You can read the full transcript over at my blog! It should be out soon - I've been trying my best to catch up with all the transcripts of the episodes leading up to this one. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hyba/message

This episode is a spiritual sequel to our last episode with Stephen on sequence structure. That episode explored how sequences could be broken into plot, character, and plot/character sequences. Well, Stephen’s back to talk about a different type of sequence: the thematic sequence. Eavesdropping at the Movies

A group of dancers parties the night away, but someone has spiked the sangria with LSD. There are extraordinarily long takes, sex, drugs, violence, and horror. Yes, it's a Gaspar Noé film. Climax is a singular cinematic escape into a vision of Hell. Boy, there's a lot going on. We grapple with the film's themes of sex, violence, drugs, youth, dance, sexuality, nationality, culture, and whatever else we can remember of its insane 96 minutes. We discuss what we did and didn't like about the dancing - the pros and cons of the way it's shot - and what value there is in extraordinary cinematic violence in a world in which footage of horrific real-life violence is commonplace. We discuss the detail of Climax's cinematography and editing and the effects they have on our experiences, particularly shooting upside-down and inserting almost subconsciously brief flashes of black frames in otherwise normal cuts. We're reminded of Do the Right Thing, The Exterminating Angel, and Salò, and indeed Climax wears its influences on its sleeve. José reads it allegorically, finding reference to Europe, cultural power, and race, though so far adding it all up remains beyond us. It fired Mike up enough to have a go at a guy who'd had his phone on during the cinema, but it enveloped José so completely that he didn't even notice the distraction. And Mike made a film like this once! As he puts it, "Not as good as this, probably, but a lot shorter." You can see that here if you like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjsQl7T7qMo In short, Climax is certainly worth your time. There's so much going on and we'll be seeing it again when the mac screens it in November. Recorded on 30th September 2018.

Som en fysiker der opdager huller i tidligere teorier og åbner døre indtil det umulige, finder Avemo de uhyrligt høje toner frem i sig. I Næstved bor Annette. As part of the BBC's opera season, designer Hildegard Bechtler talks to Michael Berkeley about her favourite music and some of the twenty-seven operas she has worked on all over the world. Hildegard is one of our most prolific and successful theatre and opera designers. Born in Germany, she moved to Britain aged eighteen, and very quickly established herself first in film, then in theatre and opera. Her style combines wit and invention to deliver minimalist style with maximum impact. She has designed for every major theatre and opera company including the Royal Opera, ENO, Glyndebourne, and the Royal National Theatre. And the international nature of her work is typified by one of her most recent productions - Thomas Adès's new opera The Exterminating Angel - staged in Salzburg, Copenhagen, Covent Garden, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Hildegard chooses music from two operas she has worked on, The Ring Cycle and The Damnation of Faust; a Burns song which reminds her of her love of Scotland and her husband, the actor Bill Paterson; and a piece by her namesake, Hildegard of Bingen. Cloudland Canyon quickly set about releasing a number of other releases and touring that same year, most notably a single track collaboration 12”/LP entitled Exterminating Angel with Chicago musician Lichens in 2007 on Holy Mountain. In 2007, the band was signed to Kranky and released their first proper album Silver Tongued Sisyphus. In 2008, the band released another collaborative 12” with Mythical Beast on Not Not Fun, as well as their second full length, Lie in Light on Kranky. The latter was chosen as one of top 25 albums of the year 2008 by the Magnet magazine. Cloudland Canyon subsequently moved to Holy Mountain, where the band began their own imprint of Holy Mountain (Intercoastal Artists) for 2010’s album Fin Eaves, which has become their best-received work to date, landing on numerous year-end lists. They went on tour with the Flaming Lips (whom Uhlhorn has collaborated extensively with) as well as with Interpol and Bear in Heaven. Members of the Arcade Fire even name checked the band.Uhlhorn has also played in several other successful groups and bands during this time, including King Khan & the Shrines, Panthers (Dim Mak, Vice), Pharaohs (100% Silk, Stone's Throw, Intercoastal Artists), Eden Express (Holy Mountain), and Tav Falco's Panther Burns He has also played guitar live and on albums by Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, including Chatham's Crimson Grail, which was staged at Lincoln Center. Cloudland Canyon’s ranks have included close friend Jerry Fuchs (also drummer for !!!, LCD Soundsystem, Maserati, Turing Machine, Moby) who died in 2009. Most recently, memphis drummer Ross Johnson (Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Alex Chilton) has joined the band.

After returning from exile to his native Spain, director Luis Buñuel made one his greatest and most controversial films--Viridiana. After its release, he found himself back on the slow boat to Churubusco, Mexico, where he made this very surreal and angry film, no doubt venting his cinematic spleen towards his Spanish foes.

The last time we spoke about Luis Buñuel, he was making fun of rich hypocrites in The Exterminating Angel. In this earlier film, a far angrier diatribe on the destructive lives of Mexico City’s street children, Buñuel makes one of his most powerful social statements--and still manages to fit in a few surreal elements!!

Thomas Ades, hailed as Britain's greatest composer since Benjamin Britten, on the premiere of The Exterminating Angel, his opera which is based on Louis Bunuel's 1962 surrealist film and features live sheep on the Royal Opera House stage. What if a deer did porn? Is it legal to marry a stuffed owl exhibit? Why is it so difficult to find a baby called Gary? American poet Patricia Lockwood ponders all of these in Motherland Fatherland Homelandsexuals, her new collection which also features the autobiographical poem Rape Joke, a viral hit on the internet. The poetry collection is published to coincide with her memoir Priestdaddy, which details growing up in a religious household with an ordained Catholic Priest as a father. The quirky superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy was the surprise hit of 2014. Cinema-goers loved the rag-tag group of lesser-known Marvel Comics characters, their bickering humour and the awesome mix tape that provided the soundtrack. Editor's Note: Due to a technical issue, this is our first episode back. We recorded this episode as the second entry in the Anti-Trash Marathon, the first was to drop last week but the file messed up and we were unable to get that episode posted. It'll forever join a handful of other films as one of the few lost GoodTrash episodes. Welcome back dear listener! The Anti-Trash marathon continues this week on your favorite film analysis podcast, the GoodTrash GenreCast. This week, we take on Luis Bunuel's surrealist dinner party classic, The Exterminating Angel (1962). Dustin presents a quick rundown of Bunuel's career and what shaped this influential classic. Is it worth the wait time? Or should you cut out early? Find out as we apply our style of film criticism to The Exterminating Angel. This week's game provides a lot of laughs as we talk about 3 Movie Characters We Wouldn't Want to be Stuck with at a Dinner Party. We then move into the film analysis section to breakdown The Extermintating Angel. Dalton kicks things off by talking about Sartes' idea that "hell is other people". He examines the sociological factors of being stuck with other people and how those underlying tensions are cranked to 11 by Bunuel.  Caleb presents his film analysis next by talking about the facade of appearances and the bourgeoisie. He talks about the economic history of the country. He argues that the context of putting it in Spain meant highlighting a country that didn't feel much of the same impact of World War II as other countries. Dustin piggybacks off the conversation before him and looks at the film's critique of fascism. He gives some more historical context of what was happening in Spain. Dustin argues that the bourgeoisie hold up the facade of capitalism.  That's it for this week. Now, we've got to get ready for our upcoming dinner. The table is set, will you hang around?
