In this podcast, Aaron Interviews Dr. Susannah Heschel, Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College. Susannah is the author of a fascinating new book entitled, The Aryan Jesus, a book that investigates Christian complicity in the Nazi genocide of Jews.
With one week before the election, Colin talks to Dr. Susannah Heschel, professor of Jewish Studies and daughter of the great Abraham Joshua Heschel, about the troubling intersection of religion and politics in modern day America, and how this relates to the role religion played in Hitler's Germany. Dr. Heschel is Chair of the Jewish Studies Program and the Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College. Her scholarship focuses on Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of biblical scholarship, and the history of anti-Semitism. She is the author of the bookThe Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany. Susannah's father is the internationally recognized scholar and theologian, Abraham Joshua Heschel, author of such seminal works as The Sabbath and The Prophets.
In this week’s show we are honored to have as our guest Dr. Susannah Heschel, the Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College. Her scholarship focuses on Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of biblical scholarship, and the history of anti-Semitism. Her numerous publications include On Being a Jewish Feminist (Schocken), Abraham Geiger and the Jewish Jesus (University of Chicago Press), The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany (Princeton University Press) and numerous articles. She is also the daughter of civil rights activist and modern Jewish Philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel.Today’s topic is the current social and political trends in the U. S. and the normalizing of bigotry, racial hatred and anti-Semitism; the intensity of these incidents can be seen from the political provocateurs who mesmerize large audiences to irresponsible political leaders and celebrities who act as mouthpieces to radical groups. In the last year there has been a resurfacing of Anti-Semitism in the U.S. such as cemetery desecrations, Jewish Community Centers being evacuated often and a 45 percent spike in anti-Jewish incidents across college campuses; as well as other incidents in England, France and Sweden. Dr. Heschel discusses how racism, ethnic hatred and religious persecution affect modern day politics.

ABOUT THIS LECTURE: Professor Heschel speaks about the remarkable life of her father, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. Rabbi Heschel was born in 1907 in Warsaw into a distinguished family of Hasidic rebbes. After his studies in Berlin, Rabbi Heschel escaped Europe and immigrated to the United States, becoming one of American Judaism’s most important interpreters and teachers of the twentieth century. Professor Heschel’s lecture will describe the Hasidic roots of her father’s theological writings and also of his political engagement in the Civil Rights Movement and in Christian-Jewish relations.
