In Melbourne you might have picked up a book or a comic from a Jesus Christian outside Flinders Street Station, or you could have seen their religious graffiti messages along Sydney's railway lines. But while they portray themselves as an altruistic Christian community living life by faith and rejecting the money motivation of work, former members have been shunned and demonised, and parents tell heartbreaking stories of losing their relationship with their child after they have joined the Jesus Christians.Full research sources listed here. As we continue exploring the theme of hope in the face of exile this Advent, colleagues in ministry Sarah, Erica, Natalie, and Steve zoom out to creation itself, and to God's promise to make all creation new and to dwell with us. Rather than just wishing for freedom from one empire or another--like Babylon in the history of Judah, or Rome in the time of Jesus--Christian hope is ultimately for all of creation to be renewed. And in a sense, because of the ways human sin alienates us from one another, the world, and from God, all of life in the present world feels out-of-sorts and in "exile." So what we are most deeply hoping for is a renewal of creation as a whole, including us, and for God to be at home with us once and for all. And that, it turns out, is connected to the promise of the Messiah who is the center of our Advent waiting. So listen in to this week's conversation here on Crazy Faith Talk!

Christianity has not always been about politics and anti-abortion and anti-gay extremism. This was a long planned grooming of Christians to get to this point. Now here we are - what do we do about it? Join Paul and Ashley to discuss live how a political operative name Paul Weyrich has done more to shape American Christianity than any pastor ever dreamed. The Christian life is full of storms. Failing to understand this causes some Christians to question God's love for them. Luckily for us, the disciples faced a literal storm to help us understand and face the storms in our lives. In Mark 4:35-41, we learn about the power and presence of Jesus through a great storm, a great calm, and great fear.
Even when life is crazy, we can still trust in God who is our Rock and our Redeemer. This is easy to say and you might just think “Oh, this is one of those almost cliche Jesus Christian things,” but in the middle of everything, God is there.

On this payday, Amber and Erika discuss America's hijacking of Jesus and the church's complicity with inequity, exploitative capitalism, and anti-blackness. We are joined by Stephanie M. House-Niamke, a sociologist whose work centers on power, access, and choice, across the areas of race, gender, and religion. Stephanie helps us see how problematic theological frameworks like the prosperity gospel and manifest destiny have resulted in the church being an extension of many of the same exclusionary, unjust practices propagated in our broader society. We also explore whether and under what conditions the Black church can return to itself, extricating the White Supremacy that has crept into its midst. Press play to hear what we have to say!
