During this month dedicated to Mental Health Awareness, we want to take a deep dive into the healing power of writing for those of us in the MBC community. I have admired the writing of so many greats in our community: the poet Anya Silver, memoirist and poet Nina Riggs, and the great blog writing found on Nancy’s Point, or the spunky writing of my friends Rebecca Timlin-Scalera or Emily Garnett. Do you find writing intimidating or something that other people do? In this episode, we speak about the writing process with the founder and editor of the Wildfire Magazine writing community, April Stearns, a writing workshop participant & psychotherapist Erin Weiss, and poet and writer Ilene Kaminsky. Like all good writing - we laugh, we cry, and we get inspired. Next week, we will host a special episode with readings from the writers of Wildfire Magazine. An episode not to be missed! Universe, what's good?! For tonight's episode, I'll be airing my appearance on episode 24 of The Intersection of Cancer and Life, which was a roundtable episode with Emily Garnett, Kelsey Bucci, Tina Conrad, Leanna House, Mimi Hall, Lindsay DeLong, and myself! --- For the Season 2 finale, we wanted to switch the conversation up a little bit, so I'm welcoming six other breast cancer podcasters onto the show for a round table conversation. It's not often that you get a group together like this, a half-dozen total strangers, bonded only by our need to talk about our illness in this way, but I can't even fully capture what an amazing group this is. We had so much fun, and I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording. The show will be taking a brief break over the summer, and be back in a couple of months with a deep dive into breast cancer. We'll be talking to researchers, doctors, advocates, and unpacking the challenges of all aspects of life with breast cancer in anticipation of October's breast cancer awareness month. I've been so honored to continue to share these conversations with you, and am so excited to keep going. Have a wonderful summer! --- You can find The Intersection of Cancer and Life over at https://www.mouthoffnetwork.com/the-int… and subscribe on Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, and Apple Podcasts.

#089 — Mom Life, With Cancer: You’re Not Dead! There are two contrasting narratives around cancer: We hear stories of survivors who beat the disease. And then we hear stories of people who are on their deathbeds. In reality, there is a much greater spectrum of experience. Emily Garnett is 32 years old. She recently celebrated her fifth wedding anniversary and her son’s second birthday. She was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer that same week. But Emily’s life didn’t stop. She is still here. She is still making dinner and taking care of her son and going to the grocery store. And she wants the world to know what it looks like to live life with cancer. Today, Emily shares her career evolution, explaining how she became an elder care lawyer and her decision to step away when her son was born. She shares the devastating experience of being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer as a young mom and her extremely limited options for having more children. I ask Emily how she navigates the fear and the unfairness of it all, and she describes how she talks to her son about her cancer diagnosis. Listen in for insight around the opportunity Emily has found in her illness and learn more about her advocacy organization, Beyond the Pink Ribbon. Emily Garnett is an attorney and mother of a 3-year-old who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in November of 2017. We had an inspiring, moving, and educational conversation with her about illness, uncertainty, logistics in the face of a true challenge, and resilience. Laura and Sarah also talk about Thanksgiving and gratitude, and in the Q&A, a listener asks about how a planner might contribute to the "invisible workload" of women (and how to avoid it!).
In this episode of the Our Bodies Series, Havilah talks with Emily Garnett - mother, wife, lawyer, writer, and someone who lives with cancer. Emily brings joy and humor to a difficult topic, and offers words of wisdom for us all. We discussed being diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer at the age of 32, right after her son turned two and she celebrated her 5th wedding anniversary. She was also trying to get pregnant which she learned would never be an option. As a matter of fact, she had a complete hysterectomy 2 1/2 weeks prior to our interview. In her words: I'm Emily, a lawyer, wife, mother, and cat lady, living outside of New York City. I was a collegiate swimmer and completed the 2011 New York City Marathon. Professionally, I am an elder law and special needs attorney, whose practice focused primarily on adult guardianships, capacity issues, care management, and public benefits. When my son was born, I left law practice to stay home with him. In the same week that I celebrated my fifth wedding anniversary and my son turned two, I was diagnosed with metastatic (stage IV) breast cancer at age 32. I am documenting this new life from my diagnosis to treatment, through all of the emotions and logistics of life with a young child and a metastatic cancer diagnosis, because I believe in education, empowerment, and the creation of community so that no one feels alone even in the darkest corners of this diagnosis and cancer life. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-naked-podcaster/message Support this podcast
