Episode 13: 28 Lessons in 28 Years Listen and Subscribe to the podcast here: Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify and Stitcher Today's episode is a little different. In honor of her 28th birthday, Alli shares with us 28 lessons she's learned in the past 28 years. Things get deep, things get silly, you know, the usual. Enjoy!  To follow Alli on Instagram: www.instagram.com/alignwithalli  28 things I've learned in 28 years. You have a perfect body the day you look in the mirror and decide it's perfect Your parents might not know what's best for you. It's time to decide that on your own. You have full agency over your body. You don't need to eat that cake you don't like just because everyone in the office is. You don't need to 'act polite’ when someone crosses a.physical boundary. You definitely don't need to have mediocre sex with dudes out of obligation. Your real friends will love you even when you fuck up. Your circle will be smaller, but the roots deeper. People will pretend they are your friend to elevate their own social status. You will know this by how much they gossip about other people to your face. Hint: they are talking just as much shit about you behind your back. You will be asked to choose sides on really big issues. It's okay to not choose. It's okay to hold both. We need more people who can sit in the grey. The things we aren't sure if we can do - those are the things we need to do. There is never a perfect time. Now is always better than later. Respect yourself enough to wait for a  man who treats you as an equal partner. A man worthy of your love will ask you on a date -- like a real date. He won't just want to make out with you drunk. Forgive easily and quickly - but only to the chosen few. Guard your heart. Perspective is everything. What you consider stressful and hard now will look like a walk in the park in a few years. Unfollow everything and everyone that triggers you into negative thinking People who don't know you will judge you. Don't let their opinions stop you Most people spend their whole life trying to impress people they don't even like. Surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage you. Make time for play. Be silly. Embrace your goofy side. It's what makes life fun. There will always be ways to make money. Time is the truly scarce resource. As you get more successful, people will try to piggyback. Don't let them. Instead, teach them. Your voice will shake when you use it. Keep using it. Never make your appearance your  currency, youill get wrinkles on your eyes and around your forehead. You currency is your brilliance. School won't teach you everything and sometimes the answer isn't more school but just more bravery. More action. You don't need much money to be brilliantly happy. Above a certain threshold, more money doesnt improve your life. Everyone is just doing the best they can with the tools they've been given. Trust others freely but trust yourself the most. There is no shame in going to therapy. Call in the troops when you need em. Other people's expectations can no longer define your life. Live according to your own values. Time in nature, sex, and chocolate can cure most pain. If you're on the fence about it, it's a no. [comment-form] Social Do you want to hear more from Alli? Subscribe below! This was a definition of feminism I offered in Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center more than 10 years ago. It was my hope at the time that it would become a common definition everyone would use. I liked this definition because it did not imply that men were the enemy. By naming sexism as the problem it went directly to the heart of the matter. Practically, it is a definition which implies that all sexist thinking and action is the problem, whether those who perpetuate it are female or male, child or adult. It is also broad enough to include an understanding of systemic institutionalized sexism. As a definition it is open-ended. To understand feminism it implies one has to necessarily understand sexism.” Transwomen of color is the highest minority murder rate in this country [bctt tweet="The issue is not just equal pay and the #metoo movement, it’s life or death for a lot of people"] When those people feel safe in this world, everyone will feel safe in the world #METOO or #AMINEXT? Why self-care is so important- especially in times of “burning down your life” phases We have to be firing on all cylinders in order to bounce back from trauma Self-care is identifying your base needs and then prioritizing them.
