Boom, baby! Emperor Kuzco lives his best life at the expense of others. Being turned into a llama by his advisor somehow complicates things a bit. Good thing he has one friend that can help get his life back... Unless they kill each other first. On this episode the boys are finally rewinding an animated movie which we all grew up with. Emperor Kuzco is turned into a llama by his ex-administrator Yzma, and must now regain his throne with the help of Pacha, the gentle llama herder. (00:00 - The Emperor's New Groove Review)
This week, Daniel and Leliana are reviewing a movie that no one asked for, no one expected, and no one knows how to quite explain: the Emperor's New Groove! This Disney cult classic has it all: cultural misappropriation, Eartha Kitt, llamas in drag, and homoerotic subtexts galore. They dig deep into the film's portrayal of masculinity through himbo legend Kronk, and ponder if Emperor Kuzco is in fact one of the gays (of course he is). This movie is... long... and hasn't aged amazingly well. For all its faults, mostly involving Marcus, this movie did pave the way for massive epic Hollywood blockbusters and has an interesting place in cinema landscape. What really distinguishes the sword and sandal and its various waves? Is it an inherently conservative genre? Is the act of creating this movie the most Roman thing ever? What is the Roman equivalent of the Turducken? Is Nero the spiritual precursor to Emperor Kuzco? Most importantly, we all need a tiny vase to collect our tears. Hosted on Acast. But after years of enduring abuse about her age and appearance Yzma is unceremoniously fired. No longer able to avert disaster from behind the scenes and unwilling to let Kuzco lead the empire to ruin she sets out to poison the evil emperor and restore order to the land. One of the wackiest Disney animated films of all time, 'The Emperor's New Groove' embodies many tropes. It is a buddy comedy, an unlikely friendship story and a tale of comeuppance. This 2000 film contains some of the most cynical and downright screwball humor of any film in the Disney canon. David Spade stars at Emperor Kuzco, ruler of a pseudo-Incan land who finds himself turned into a llama and expelled from his palace by the conniving spell-caster, Yzma. Llama Kuzco hooks up with a shepherd named Pacha and together they try restore the Emperor to his rightful place. Calvin, a new guest, joins Andrew and Phil for this episode, and the three discuss the troubled history behind the making of this film, as well as the joyous finished product.
