What are the different ways a filmmaker can ask something of the audience? Chas and Stu are joined by recurring guest Mel in this prelude episode to upcoming episodes on Voice Over and Breaking the Fourth Wall. In this episode, we attempt to taxonomise the different ways filmmakers can ask something directly of their audience. To this end, we identify 4 levers that can be pulled: Diagetic to non-diagetic (in story world to outside story world) Who is talking? From story-teller to a character Whom are they talking to? Themselves or directly to the audience? From when in time is the communication coming? They then take these levers and ask a series of questions, including: What does the communication want from the audience? Does the audience know who's talking? How reliable is the information? How aware is who is communicating of the audience? They then apply these questions and levers to… deep breath… STAR WARS, ROBOCOP, STARSHIP TROOPERS, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, MINORITY REPORT, CHILDREN OF MEN, NEVER HAVE I EVER, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, STRANGER THAN FICTION, DUNE, OPPENHEIMER, YELLOWJACKETS, HUSTLERS, THE OFFICE, MASTERCHEF, ZOMBIELAND, FLEABAG, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, SPONTANEOUS, BLACKKKLANSMAN, AMERICAN FICTION, AMERICAN SPLENDOR, THE KILLER, VERONICA MARS, FIGHT CLUB, SHUTTER ISLAND, SIXTH SENSE, HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR. Episode SummaryErin and Rachel try not to throw off the emperor's groove with their critique of the cultural appropriation and homophobia in this cult classic from 2000. Ultimately, the memeable humor and nuanced portrayal of masculinity make The Emperor's New Groove a palatable offering from a studio that was floundering post-Renaissance. Hello, welcome to the twenty-first episode of Reel Time Animation, where best friends of 13 years Colton and Elizabeth discuss an animated movie in real time as you watch along! The pandemic and a 4 hour drive has kept us apart and watching movies together on the phone has made life more bearable. So, we're inviting you to watch with us and laugh with us as we snark our way through classic animated movies of our childhood. The premise is simple: sync up your movie with ours as we count down in the beginning and then all three of us can watch at the same time. We will say our time stamps a couple times as we sync up so you should have no problem syncing up! -Elizabeth

This week Craig and Alex review Emperor's New Groove, run through obscure pop culture knowledge, and decipher new analogies! Next week we are watching Argo!
This week, Daniel and Leliana are reviewing a movie that no one asked for, no one expected, and no one knows how to quite explain: the Emperor's New Groove! This Disney cult classic has it all: cultural misappropriation, Eartha Kitt, llamas in drag, and homoerotic subtexts galore. They dig deep into the film's portrayal of masculinity through himbo legend Kronk, and ponder if Emperor Kuzco is in fact one of the gays (of course he is). Please be sure to leave us a review on apple podcasts. If you have any good movie or tv show recommendations, please let us know in the review and we will DEFINITELY reexamine it on the pod! Join us this week as we beware the groove, squeak squeaker squeakerson, and “Booyah!” our way down a waterfall, all while discussing the now 20 year old Disney cult-classic ‘The Emperor's New Groove' at the demand of a patron of the show. The Emperor's New Groove is a 2000 American animated buddy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The 40th animated film produced by the studio, it was directed by Mark Dindal, from a screenplay by David Reynolds and a story by Chris Williams and Dindal. The voice cast features David Spade, John Goodman, Eartha Kitt, Patrick Warburton, and Wendie Malick. The Emperor's New Groove follows a young and self-centered Incan emperor, Kuzco, who is transformed into a llama by his ex-advisor, Yzma. For the emperor to change back into a human, he trusts a village leader, Pacha, who escorts him back to the palace. We Watched A Thing is supported by Dendy Cinemas Canberra. This week we're heading to ancient Incan times and trying not throw off a moonwalk in mid-process. Join your favourite Disney Podcasters – Ellie, Ethan, Georgia, and Ian as we see a film much different from the originally planned "Kingdom of the Sun" Questions we asked this week include: Is Kuzco unforgiveable? Is the film doing something wrong by being so explicitly ageist? Is there a story worth having in this film or is it just a series of sitcom tropes? When was the first Academy Award for Animated films given out? How many other media properties is Ethan going to compare this to? and why doesn't Ian know more than 3 Sting songs? So, catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our Facebook page (@talkingthemickey). If you comment, you may end up among our 'shoutouts of the week.’
