(Note: If you tried to listen to this episode and it cut out suddenly around the 50 minute mark, it seems like something went wrong with the upload to the server. Sorry about that. Anyway, please try again now. Seems to be working properly following a reload) Once again, it's time to share a few highlights from the past year of Something Who as we bring you a compilation from our episodes in 2023. And there's a lot to choose from. In addition to our regular presenting team of Richard, Paul, Giles and Simon, we had a lot of guests this year, including Tim Burrows from The Missing Episodes podcast on our 10th anniversary discussion of the Omnirumour. We chatted to an actual Doctor Who writer in Matthew Jacobs, along with Vanessa Yuille, who together made the wonderful fan film Doctor Who Am I? Both Matthew and Vanessa were almost upstaged by a pneumatic drill, but saw the funny side. We spoke with Steve Manfred about his friendship and collaboration with writer Neil Gaiman. Elizabeth Morton spoke with us about her family connections to Doctor Who, as well as her writing career. And Benjamin Cook, Rich Tipple and Timothy K Brown discussed their work on colourising the first Dalek story for the 60th anniversary. Simon Guerrier joined us to chat about The Rescue and The Eleventh Hour, while providing lots of insight from his research into writer and story editor David Whitaker. We hope you enjoy these clips and, if you do, please peruse our back catalogue for the full versions of all of these items and perhaps you'd like to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or similar platform. The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end. Doctor Who Am I? is widely available in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Am-I-Blu-ray/dp/B0BGPYV3SD/, also on Amazon Prime: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Am-Daphne-Ashbrook/dp/B0B8Q734H3/, and ITVX https://www.itv.com/. Tim's podcast Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast is essential listening for anyone interested in this topic and can be found here: https://missingepisodes.podbean.com/ Elizabeth Morton's latest novel, written as Eliza Morton, is The Orphans from Liverpool Lane, a Pan paperback described as "A warm yet gritty saga set in Liverpool in the 1940s from the acclaimed author of Angel of Liverpool." You can get it from your bookseller of choice, or this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Orphans-Liverpool-Lane-heartwarming-emotional-ebook/dp/B0BM9VN5CT  Simon Guerrier has written a fantastic book about Doctor Who's first Story Editor entitled "David Whitaker in an Exciting Adventure with Television" which you'll want to order here: https://tenacrefilms.bigcartel.com/product/david-whitaker-in-an-exciting-adventure-with-television In the UK you can find The Daleks in Colour on the BBC iPlayer here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001snnz/doctor-who-19631996-season-1-the-daleks-in-colour The pneumatic drill can be found doing a variety of construction related work in the state of California, while dreaming of an ongoing role in podcasting, Our cover art was designed for us by Bea Garrido. Here's another of our special episodes. Over a year ago our podcast Twitter account was followed by Matthew Jacobs, the writer of the TV Movie. This was both exciting and terrifying in equal measure, as we'd just made an episode that featured the TV Movie, that had not been entirely complimentary. We became aware that Matthew was promoting an independent film called Doctor Who Am I? And recently Richard took the chance to watch it on DVD, though it's now widely available in the UK on a variety of platforms. So, excitingly, in this episode, Richard talks with Matthew and Vanessa Yuille who created the film together. This is funny and sometimes deep conversation about the nature of being a fan, with the added excitement of someone with a pneumatic drill attacking the outside of Matthew's apartment. We talk about Vanessa and Matthew's journey with the film, US fans and conventions, and we touch on Matthew's childhood connection with the with Doctor Who, when his father played Doc Holliday in The Gunfighters. Thanks to Vanessa and Matthew for sharing your stories and for the generous donation of your time. But whilst the Spice Girls were preparing to change the world, a plucky band of creatives were striding to change the Whoniverse! Doctor Who Am I is described by IMDb as a documentary where, "an infamous Doctor Who screenwriter is reluctantly dragged back into the American Whoniverse, in this funny and moving documentary about finding family in the unlikeliest of places." It launched in the UK in late October and will be available on home media in some territories later this very month. But did you know that, on the podcast which gave birth to the Doctor Who Show - Who Wars - we actually interviewed that screenwriter (Matthew Jacobs)? And that he spoke at length about the Doctor Who Am I project? Yes, on August 9, 2015 we ran a 40m interview with Matthew, touching on Doctor Who Am I, The Emperor's New Groove, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Star Wars, and more. All conducted by Kate - @kamiduu. What we have made here is an edit of that interview, basically cutting more than 50% out (so if you want to hear him talk Disney, Young Indy, George Lucas, etc, you will need to seek out the original episode), and we're left with a very Doctor Who and Doctor Who Am I oriented chat. Seven years have gone by since this interview was conducted, but we think you'll find the chat relevant and a great preamble to seeing the doco!

During this casual and compelling conversation, he discusses the importance of creating three dimensional characters, his incredible collaboration with George Lucas and Debbie Fine at Skywalker Ranch, and how he got the chance to write an unproduced episode titled Stockholm, 1909. Opening music excerpt was composed by Laurence Rosenthal and is titled "Discovery of the Oryx / Sacrifice"

IT'S ANOTHER first for Pieces of Eighth - normally we don't do review episodes, but on this occasion we've broken our rule. Today, we feature Kenny's roadtrip to Edinburgh with his Power of 3 co-host David Steel, as they travelled to watch Doctor Who Am I on the big screen, the documentary charting Matthew Jacobs' journey with fandom, from being (as he perceived it) an unwanted embarrassment after the TV Movie, to fully embracing the fact that people like - and indeed love - his work. It's a moving film, directed by Vanessa Yuille, and Kenny and Dave give their thoughts en route to the cinema in the car, in the cinema beforehand, and give their instant reaction on the streets of the Scottish capital. Becca's gutted not to have seen the film - yet - but we're also joined by seven listeners who share their thoughts on the film too.

DOCTOR Who TV Movie screenwriter Matthew Jacobs has a new Time Lord-related project on the way - and he's spoken to Pieces of Eighth all about it. Matthew and his friend, documentary filmmaker Vanessa Yuille, follows him in Doctor Who Am I, as he is reluctantly pulled back into the fandom that universally panned his writing and narrative twists in 1996. In a film that is funny and moving, the American ‘Whoniverse' is explored during the biggest conventions dedicated to the cult of the Doctor. Jacobs's journey is often hilarious and emotionally perilous, but it also sparks a provocative and touching showdown between American Doctor Who fans and the writer himself. Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook, Eric Roberts, and many others, offer Jacobs words of wisdom and help him realize just how personal and ambivalently entangled the show has been in his life. Matthew unexpectedly finds himself a kindred part of this close-knit, yet vast, family of fans. Yuille's directorial debut documentary addresses the desire to belong to a community, and how people can become nourished and enriched by the experience.

Hello! Welcome to the very first edition of Rogue Commentary, a brand new bi-weekly podcast featuring exclusive audio commentaries for cult and classic movies from the people who made them (and other interesting people). We kick off with a classic British horror movie "Paperhouse" (1988) and we're delighted to be joined in this inaugural episode by director Bernard Rose – who also directed "Candyman" and many other fine films – and writer Matthew Jacobs, who also wrote the Doctor Who TV movie and quite a few of the 'Young Indiana Jones' episodes and made-for-TV movies. You can listen to the commentary just as a podcast or cue it up to the film, starting not on the logos, but on the first frame of the film itself. (There's a cue in the episode itself.) We cued the commentary to the version of the film available on Prime Video UK – and it won't necessarily sync up with versions of the film available on other formats. And if you know of a way to solve that problem, we'd love to hear from you. Speaking of which... Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? In this episode I visit with Matthew Jacobs, a partner at Vinson & Elkins in San Francisco who represented the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors of Juniper Networks in the company’s recently concluded FCPA enforcement action.  In addition to his discussion his work on the matter we discussed some interesting questions about representation during the pendency of a FCPA investigation. Some of the highlights include: Initial retention by the Audit Committee and the scope of the assignment? Why the settlement was so favorable to the company? How the company is in a stronger position now to stay in compliance with the FCPA and other international anticorruption laws today. When should there be separate counsel for company and audit committee? Why do cases take so long and how does that help or hurt the company? What is the role of management changes in the resolution of a FCPA enforcement action? How has the interest of the government in compliance changed?Where does the disgorgement issue fit in settlement discussions? What is the effect of the government deferring to internal investigations?Resources Matthew Jacobs, V&E website. NEW TO WHO and THE TV MOVIE“We’re back - and it’s about time!”Late July, 2019: the brink of a new episode of New To Who. An anachronistic Australian podcast materialises in San Francisco (or is that Vancouver?) amid a hail of laughter which finds its intentional targets - three strange men who walk out of the pod.But Col, Dan, and Steven are not the only podcasters in Vancouver. Doctor Who royalty, Jeremy Radick - who appears as Gareth in the 1996 TV Movie - is there as well, joining New To Who for a very special episode.Seven years after disappearing from television screens everywhere, Doctor Who came back - but for one night only. The script for The TV Movie (also unofficially known as “The Enemy Within”) was written by Matthew Jacobs - whose father appeared in the William Hartnell story, The Gunfighters - while Philip Segal was finally able to bring his vision for Doctor Who to a US mainstream audience for the first time in his role as Executive Producer of this American co-production with Fox. Geoffrey Sax, another Englishman in Hollywood, directs this big budget movie intended as a pilot for a Doctor Who series on network television.Taking the mantle of the Doctor, this time in his eighth incarnation, was the dreamy Paul McGann. Daphne Ashbrook played his companion-in-waiting, Dr Grace Holloway, alongside Jee Yee Tso as Chang Lee, who falls under the spell of the Master - this time played fabulously by Eric Roberts. You can listen to and see the film clip for The Safety Dance by Canadian new wave outfit Men Without Hats here.Theme by Our Colin (2019). As The Year With No Doctor Who drags on, new cracks in spacetime emerge, amongst them a back-and-forth war between the BBC and its enemies in government and without, and the surprising news that Chris Chibnall might adopt the (predominantly) American model of a writer's room for his tenure as showrunner for Doctor Who. Intriguing! And while thinking about the future, why not reflect on the past? Specifically, ponder upon the legacy of the twentieth anniversary of the TV Movie, with a panel recorded at LI Who featuring Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook, Matthew Jacobs, and Gary Russell!
